Write the Title and Author of our novel on page 1 of the composition book/spiral notebook.
Pages 2 and 3 are for notes on Setting and a map, which we will add after watching an introductory powerpoint. The state of Mississippi should be highlighted, with the towns of Vicksburg and Strawberry marked. Also highlight and label Chicago, IL, the Mississippi River, and our state.
Pages 4 17 are to be used for 14 Main Characters in this novel. Label the margin at the top of each page with the character names as given in the chart below.
Then use a ruler to make a line 3 inches to the left of the red margin line from the top blue line to the bottom of each page.
On the left side you will make a scale drawing of each character, and color it in to match the novel description, do these after you have read the chapters as listed below.
The type of clothes the characters are wearing and anything they are carrying should match the time period, and be reflective of their social standing or job.

On the column on the right side of each character page you will add important notes for that character,
Include as much of the following as you can: -age -race -characters point-of-view on the topic of racial equality -relationship to Cassie, if any -occupation (or grade in school) -full name -social/economic standing (ex. lower class/poor or upper class/rich) - 2 or 3 adjectives that can be used to describe the character, some examples are given on the next page

Journal Questions
Directions: Write one question at the top of a journal page. Answer using complete sentences, and always cite an example from the book to support your answer. Use quotation marks and give the page number when you cite examples from the novel.
Journal questions will be distributed by the teacher weekly for Ch. 1 9. A Socratic seminar will take the place of written questions and answers during the last week of the novel unit, so there will not be any written questions for chapters 10 12.
