Small Wind Turbines One of the main benefits of wind energy is economic gain, both for individuals and for communities. Individuals can save money on their energy bills, and even make money, by generating wind power. Communities can diversify their economies and enjoy greater reliance on local resources when their members invest in wind. Vaigunth specializes in providing the most economical power solution be it, using free energy from wind, passive solar, solar panels, or any combination theyre of. We have personally tested all of our components to ensure our systems are assembled with the most compatible, quality, robust, commercially available components on the market, our wind turbines are designed for low rated velocity (Less than 9.5 m/s). In a response to a world need we have developed our own designed wind turbine, which is designed to produces a usable amount of power at its annual average wind speed of 4 m/s. A World Bank study stated that on 80% of the world land mass there is an average wind speed of 4 m/s. This product was developed as one option in helping to bring dependable electricity to remote locations all over the developing world. WIND TURBINE DESIGN
Page 3 of 22
Chennai Rotor The portion of the wind turbine that collects energy from the wind is called the rotor. The rotor usually consists of two or more wooden, fiberglass or metal blades, which rotate about an axis (horizontal or vertical) at a rate determined by the wind speed and the shape of the blades. The blades are attached to the hub, which in turn is attached to the main shaft.
Drag Design Blade designs operate on either the principle of drag or lift. For the drag design, the wind literally pushes the blades out of the way. Drag powered wind turbines are characterized by slower rotational speeds and high torque capabilities. They are useful for the pumping, sawing or grinding work that Dutch, farm and similar "work-horse" windmills perform. For example, a farm-type windmill must develop high torque at start-up in order to pump, or lift, water from a deep well. Lift Design The lift blade design employs the same principle that enables airplanes, kites and birds to fly. The blade is essentially an airfoil, or wing. When airflows past the blade, a wind speed and pressure differential is created between the upper and lower blade surfaces. The pressure at the lower surface is greater and thus acts to "lift" the blade. When blades are attached to a central axis, like a wind turbine rotor, the lift is translated into rotational motion. Lift-powered wind turbines have much higher rotational speeds than drag types and therefore well suited for electricity generation. Tip Speed Ratio The tip-speed is the ratio of the rotational speed of the blade to the wind speed, the larger this ratio, the faster the rotation of the wind turbine rotor at a given wind speed. Electricity generation requires high rotational speeds. Lift-type wind turbines have maximum tip-speed ratios of around 10, while drag-type ratios are approximately 1. Given the high rotational speed requirements of electrical generators, it is clear that the lift-type wind turbine is most practical for this application. The number of blades that make up a rotor and the total area they cover affect wind turbine performance. For a lift-type rotor to function effectively, the wind must flow smoothly over the blades. To avoid turbulence, spacing between blades should be great enough so that one blade will not encounter the disturbed, weaker air flow caused by the blade which passed before it. It is because of this requirement that most wind turbines have only two or three blades on their rotors. Ener Tek Rotor Design Page 4 of 22
Chennai The rotor system consists of three fiberglass blades. The blades convert the energy of the wind into rotational forces that can drive the generator through shaft. The airfoil on the Ener Tek Turbine is the modified NACA 23015 developed for the Ener Tek Turbine by Vaigunth Ener Tek (P) Ltd. The fiberglass blades are exceptionally strong because they are densely packed with glass reinforcing fibers that run the full length of the blade. The rotor has three blades because three blades will run much smoother than rotors with two blades. Detailed Specification of Rotor Blades are given in Details in Appendices 1.1 Generators The generator is what converts the turning motion of a wind turbine's blades into electricity. Inside this component, coils of wire are rotated in a magnetic field to produce electricity. Different generator designs produce either alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC), and they are available in a large range of output power ratings. The generator's rating, or size, is dependent on the length of the wind turbine's blades because longer blades capture more energy. Ener Tek generators are Brush less Permanent Magnet Alternator, normally used in battery charging applications and Grid Connecting Application. The battery Charging system use of an inverter, which converts DC to AC. Storage systems using batteries store DC and usually are configured at voltages of between 12, 24 and 120 volts, The Grid Tied system use of Grid Tied inverter, which converts DC to AC to feed current to Normal Grid Line, the configured DC voltages of between 140 Volt DC to 500 Volt DC. Details are in Appendices 1.1 Transmission: The numbers of revolutions per minute (rpm) of the Ener Tek wind turbine rotor are 500, 310, 240, 210, 167, 150 and 90 of AR-200W, AR-500W, AR-1000W, AR-2000W, AR-5000W, AR-7500W and AR-50000W respectively. As a result the Ener Tek wind turbines require a gearbox transmission to increase the rotation of the generator to the speeds necessary for efficient electricity production Except the AR-200W, AR-500W Model. The technical details of Gear box is given in details Appendices 1.1 Nacelle
The Ener Tek nacelle is the Aero Dynamic fiberglass housing around the main body of the machine. It contains the main structural of the turbine, slip-ring assembly, the yaw bearings, and the tower mount. The yaw bearings allow the wind turbine to freely pivot around the top of the tower so that the rotor will face into the wind. The slip-ring assembly is the electrical connection between the moving (as it orients with the wind direction) wind turbine and the fixed tower wiring. The slip rings and yaw bearings are located just above the tower mount.
Tail Assembly
The Ener Tek tail assembly, composed of a tail boom and the tail fin, keeps the power head (Rotor) at perpendicular of the wind direction. The Tail Fin is made up of Fiberglass material.
RPM Controller / Braking System
The Ener Tek system working basic principles of Electromagnetic action of brake it is controllers the rotor RPM through rpm sensor. The rotor can be stopped under most wind conditions using the Manual Barking (Electromagnetic) for the AR-1000W & AR-2000W, AR- 5000W and AR-7500W systems. You might use this function, for example, before lowering or Page 5 of 22
Chennai Page 6 of 22 climbing the tower. We do not recommend frequent use of the braking function because of the heat stress it puts on the alternator, particularly when the winds are strong. Electrical Storage Batteries are the most common form of electrical storage. Where heat, rather than electricity, is the desired end product of a wind turbine application, hot water is the usual storage medium. However, the advantageous economics of other heating systems make wind- powered heating a less attractive option. Batteries can store and deliver only DC power. Unless an inverter is used to convert DC to AC, only DC appliances can be operated from the stored power. The battery voltage must be the same as the voltage needed to run the appliance. Standard battery voltage is 12 or 24 volts. For Ener Tek system appliance requiring 24 volts Battery for AR-200W & AR-500W, 48 Volt or 120 Volt Battery require for AR-1000W, AR-2000W, AR-5000W and AR-7500W. Battery conversion efficiency is approximately 60% to 80%. A battery's capacity is rated in amp- hours, a measure of its ability to deliver certain amperage for a certain number of hours. For example, for a rating of 60 amp-hours, 3 amps can be delivered for 20 hours. Batteries should be routinely inspected for fluid level and corrosion. The storage room should be well ventilated. If allowed to accumulate, the hydrogen gas produced by some batteries can explode. Charge Controller with Inverter: The Charge controller (DC to DC Converter) will control charging current of the Ener Tek Turbines. And it controllers Bypass on and off to maximize energy capture and prevent battery overcharge. The charge controller is microprocessor based smart controls determines these switching functions based on the battery bank voltage. At battery voltages below the regulation voltage the wind and solar are connected and allowed to charge the batteries. At wind speeds below approximately 6 m/s the turbine LED (green) will blink slowly to indicate that the controller is boosting the voltage from the turbine up to battery voltage. This low end boost function ensures that the maximum possible power is extracted from the turbine at low wind speeds, and allows the turbine to produce power down to as low as 3 m/s under ideal conditions. In higher winds the turbine produces enough voltage to charge the batteries directly and the controller function is turned off. If the battery voltage rises above regulation voltage the Extra Load (dump load) circuit is ramped up to control the battery.
The inverter output is 230-Volt AC with 50HZ frequencies; the inverter can be supply even 60 Hz also.
Chennai Dumb Load / Heat Storage When the Batteries get fully charged the power is get divert to dumb load. The Dumb load is be either Water pump or Heating coils. The Dumb Load of Ener Tek System are 250 Watts heating coils for the AR-200W Model & 600 Watts heating coils for AR-500W systems. The 1-HP Water pump or 1200 Watts heating coils will be provide for the AR-1000W System, 2000 Watts heating coils will be provide for the AR-2000W System & 5-HP Water pump Or 6000 Watts Heating coils will be provide for AR-5000W system.10 KW heating coils will be provide for the AR-7500 System Grid Tied Turbine:
The grid tied Enertek Turbine Model has 4-Types of AR-1000W, AR-2000W, AR- 5000W, AR-7500W and AR-50000W. The system out put from the DC TO DC Converter or Bridge Rectifiers is 140 Volt DC to 500 Volt DC.
Tower: The smooth flow of the wind over the land is interrupted by obstructions and topographical variations. These interruptions bring about two important phenomena: wind shear and turbulence. Wind shear describes the fact that close to the ground the wind is slowed down by friction and the influence of obstacles. Thus, wind speed is low close to the ground and increases with increasing height above the ground. Wind shear is more pronounced over rough terrain and less pronounced over smooth terrain. Turbulence is essentially rough air caused by the wind passing over obstructions such as trees, buildings, or terrain features. Turbulent air reduces energy output and puts greater strain on the wind turbine. The effects of both wind shear and turbulence diminish with height and can be largely overcome simply by putting the machine sufficiently high above the ground. Taller towers usually will provide better economics because the power in the wind increases as the cube of the wind velocity (P = V3; e.g., a 26% increase in wind speed doubles the energy output). A small increase in average wind speed will result in a large increase in long-term energy output. Wind speed may increase more radically with tower height in hilly or wooded areas. In flat open areas, power production will increase less significantly with tower height.
Our concerns are:
1) The forces on the turbine and mounting system are substantial and homes are not designed structurally for them. 2) The air flow around and over a home or building is complex and can cause considerable turbulence. 3) The wind turbine will cause vibrations that will be amplified through the homes structure. Ener Tek System offers a guyed-tubular and for AR-2000W, AR-5000W and AR-7500W system will have guyed tubular or self supporting tower, the self- supporting towers that do not require guy wires.
Wind Turbine Installation Procedure The following information is intended as a set of checklists to assist our customers in addressing the relevant details of an installation in logical sequences. Although most items apply to both large and small projects not every item will apply to every project. To insure thorough planning it is very important that the customer understand why a particular detail is or is not appropriate to the installation. By reviewing the entire list at various stages of the project, the customer should be able to ensure that he/she Sitting Factors.
Site Selection Page 7 of 22
Chennai Site selection may have a significant effect on annual energy production. It is typically worth the additional time and effort to locate the proper site to maximize energy production and maintain the wind turbine expected life. The following sitting factors should be considered Wind Resource Characteristics Annual average wind speed must be 4.5 m/s Makeup of average (frequency and duration of power producing winds) Prevailing wind direction (s) Turbulence Peak wind speed Height and location of obstructions Distance from utility service point Local restrictions relative to height, proximity to boundaries, etc. Tower height Proximity of wind turbines to each other Site accessibility and its effect on construction and maintenance costs. Permit and Approval
Many wind turbine locations will require some of the permits and approvals identified herein. It is important to determine which permits / approvals apply to your particular site. Issued by: o Municipality or local council o Country o State or Province o Federal (FAA, FCC, etc.) o Commission (energy, conservation, historic, etc.) o Utility Type: o Construction o Foundation Engineering o Electrical o Interconnection o Communication Interference Installation and Maintenance In order to minimize the amount of steel and concrete used in the wind turbine, a guyed tower is normally adopted. In some circumstances, the tower will not require concrete foundations at all and soil anchors or rock bolts can secure the tower guy-cables to the ground. This makes installation in remote regions easier because transportation of large amounts of concrete is not required. Soil anchors or rock bolts are always load tested after Aviation Interference. For best performance, all wind turbine installations should be thoroughly inspected by qualified personnel within 60 days after completion, at least semi-annually, and after any major windstorm, earthquake or other severe event. The inspection and service intervals identified by Vaigunth Ener Tek (P) Ltd Or its Agents must be followed for any Vaigunth warranty to remain valid.
Non-tilting Towers:
Ener Tek system has non-tilting tower, such as a fixed guyed tower or a self- supporting pole type tower, there are two general approaches that can be used: Page 8 of 22
Chennai 1) Assemble the tower and turbine together on the ground and then use a light - duty crane to set the tower in place. 2) Erect the tower and then lift the wind turbine to the top with either a light-duty crane or a gin-pole. A gin-pole, in this case, is a tower assembly tool that attaches to the tower and provides an arm with a pulley so that parts can be hoisted above the top of the tower. Professional tower erectors use gin-poles and we do not recommend their use by non- professionals. Wherever possible we strongly recommend assembling the tower and turbine on the ground. When raising the tower you must lift the tower, not the Ener Tek wind turbine. The Ener Tek cannot support the weight of the tower. For customers installing a Ener Tek on an existing fixed tower we recommend that you use a crane to lower the tower so that you can attach the turbine on the ground. Alternatively, we recommend you use a bucket-truck, like the type used by utility linemen. If neither of these approaches is possible then we recommend that you engage the services of professional wind turbine or tower erectors to install your wind turbine.
Procedure Of Ener Tek Installation
Step 1: With the tower tilted down, place the wind turbine near the top end of the tower. The tower wiring is connected to the Ener Tek wind turbine at the slip ring using two small screws and ring terminals crimped to the two conductors. Cut the outer insulation on the wire back about 60 mm. Strip the insulation off the outer 12 mm of each conductor and crimp on the appropriate ring terminals. Attach the two power conductors to the slip-ring assembly with the screws provided. The polarities of the connections are marked. If your conductors are color- coded we recommend making note of the colors connected to positive and negative leads. The slip ring assembly is not designed to support the weight of the down-tower wire. If possible put a loop in each wire to wrap around the wire ties. Use the two nylon cable ties provided to secure the tower wiring to the tower adapter casting. After completing the connections, pull on the tower wire to make sure that it is secure before mounting the wind turbine on the tower.
Step 2: Raise the tower about 1 meter off the ground to provide room to assemble for the AR- 200W, AR-500W turbines, But for AR-1000W & AR-5000W turbine raise about 2 Metter and 2.5 Meters respectively. We recommend fashioning a temporary support stand to hold the tower up during turbine assembly.
Step 3: Mount the wind turbine tower adapter to the top of the tower using the given bolts and six washers. We strongly recommend applying Loctite 270 (Thread Locking Compound) to the threads prior to installation to reduce the likelihood of loosening due to vibration. We recommend using a torque wrench to achieve the proper fastener torque on the tower mounting bolts. The recommended torque is 40 N.M for AR-200W & AR-500W and 54-N-M for AR-1000W, AR-2000W,AR-5000W, AR-7500W and AR-50000W.
Step 4: Complete the turbine wiring to the Controller before adding the blades. This is recommended so that you can test the DC polarity of the wiring by spinning the alternator by hand. It is very important that the polarity [positive (+) and negative (-)] is correct when the turbine is connected to the Controller. The best way to ensure this is to complete the wiring and then test the polarity with a Volt-Ohm-Meter. Carefully mark the positive and negative electrical leads for later reference. We recommend that you can use the Stop Mode (By Manual Brake) to keep the blades from turning during the turbine and tower raising process.
Step 5: Bolt the tail fin to the tail plate using the given bolts and washers for the 4-Ener Tek models. We recommend applying Loctite to the bolt threads prior to assembly.
Step 6: Place the tail Plate on the rear of the turbine head and given Bolt with washer. We recommend applying Loctite to the bolt threads prior to assembly.
Step 7: Attach the blades through the given Bolds & Washers; do not forget to put lock nut. We recommend bolting one blade up solidly and leaving the other two somewhat loose while Page 9 of 22
Chennai you check the tip-to-tip blade distance. We recommend checking, and adjusting as necessary, the blade tip spacing to ensure that the blade tips are equally spaced. This step will help make the wind turbine as smooth running as possible, which will maximize the operating life of the bearings and reduce vibration related noise. The blade tip-to-tip distances should not differ by more than 8 mm for smooth operation. We recommend using a torque wrench to achieve the proper fastener torque on the blade nuts. The recommended toque is 40 N.M for AR-200W & AR-500W and 54-N-M for AR-1000W, AR-2000W, AR-5000W, AR-7500W AR-5000W. Loctite is not necessary on the blade fasteners because the locking nuts provide adequate locking.
Step 8: Attach the spinner (nose cone) using the given bolts and washers provided. We recommend applying Loctite to the bolt threads prior to assembly.
Step 9: Raise the tower following the procedures outlined by the tower supplier. Please make safety your top priority.
