Its one of the subtle

moves a city council has

to consider, but one that
has a definite effect on
residents and the quality
of life in the city.
The recent rash of
heavy rain, and subse-
quent flooding, illustrates
the importance of an effi-
cient and adequate storm
water system within the
city.
Federal requirements
dictate the city to adhere
to certain storm water
regulations.
Recently, the city coun-
cil voted to table the adop-
tion of an updated version
of the current storm water
ordinance, thus giving the
body time to look further
into its specifics.
The proposed ordi-
nance meets minimum re-
quirements needed to
comply with the stan-
dards set by the Michigan
De par t me nt of
Environmental Quality.
Meeting these standards
is crucial to obtaining
Municipal Separate Storm
Sewer System discharge
permits from the MDEQ,
thus allowing storm water
to discharge into the lake.
The city first obtained
this permit more than 10
years ago, but needed to
tweak the current ordi-
nance in order to comply.
We need this, Mayor
Kip Walby said. As stan-
dards change then the or-
dinance changes, in es-
sence.
The way things stood
before the recent adop-
tion of the new ordinance,
there were vague stan-
dards and few specifics,
especially in terms of re-
quirements for storm
sewer construction.
The current ordinance
doesnt have any stan-
dards for calculating how
large storm sewers should
be, what to make them
out of, said Lyle Winn,
Senior Project Engineer
for Anderson, Eckstein
and Westrick, Inc. Its re-
ally rule-of-thumb right
now. We have no ordi-
nance to back us up.
The suggested ordi-
nance, which was crafted
by AEW, addressed these
issues, creating new stan-
dards and requirements,
Winn told the council.
Some of them are
based on the state regula-
tions for the MS4 permit,
the design standard
comes from what we use
in all of Macomb County,
Winn said. Thats in
terms of calculating how
big pipes should be, what
Hes Baaaa-ck.
After a year-long hia-
tus from St. Clair Shores,
legendary late-night hor-
ror-movie host, The
Ghoul, is returning for a
one-night ghoulish ad-
venture.
Thanks to the Nautical
Mile Yacht Club, the
iconic television host is
making a special appear-
ance beginning at 8 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 18, at
Brownies on the Lake.
Theres no cover
charge, but guests are
encouraged to make a
donation to a special
charity, Nautical Mile
Yacht Club Rear
Commodore Patty Mok
said.
People are going to be
able to make donations
at the door, Mok said.
And those donations are
going to go to the
Wounded Warri or
Project.
The club felt strongly
about adding this ele-
ment to the event, Mok
said.
Its something we
didnt do last year, she
explained. But we
thought it was important
to do something this
year. We think its such a
good cause, and we
would love to do that for
them.
Also appearing at the
show is local radio leg-
end, Doug The Doc of
Rock Podell, and the
band, Whiplash.
Were going to have
gift baskets to raffle,
Mok said. Were a little
bit bigger this year,
which we are really ex-
cited about, and were re-
ally expecting it to be a
very good time.
Patrons are not re-
quired to wear a
Halloween costume,
Mok said, but theyre
certainly not discour-
aged from doing so.
Its not required, no,
Mok said. But its OK if
you do, lets put it that
way.
Food and a cash bar
are available.
Theres no cover
charge so it isnt like any-
one has to call ahead and
get tickets or anything like
that at all, she said. You
just have to show up.
The Ghoul and his
Madhouse of Mystery
will perform, Mok said,
and the possibility of a
couple more bands is in
the works.
We had a very good
turnout last year, even
better than we expect-
ed, she said. And this
year we want even more
people to come out and
enjoy the show. Its going
to be great.

For years, members of
Firefighters Union #1744
opened the citys central
fire station to residents of
all ages.
This year is no excep-
tion.
From noon to 4 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 4, residents
of all ages will get the
chance to tour the facility,
participate in some activi-
ties and learn about fire
safety and prevention
from some of St. Clair
Shores bravest and finest
fire fighters as the annual
Fire Prevention Week
Open House gets under-
way.
Its something thats
very important to all the
guys and girls here at the
fire department, fire de-
partment member Cathy
McCormick said. These
guys come in and volun-
teer their time to be a part
of this. The community is
so important to all of us
here.
McCormick said the
open house is one way the
firefighters can give back
to the community.
The residents in St.
Clair Shores have been so
supportive, she said.
This is a way for them to
give back to that commu-
nity in some way.
The event not only al-
lows residents into the
station, but its all loaded
with activities for chil-
dren, McCormick said.
Were going to have
fire helmets for the kids,
coloring books and
Halloween bags, she
said. And then the
smokehouse is going to
be there, too. That is really
something everyone
should experience. Its
very neat.
The departments
smokehouse is a small
mobile structure that liter-
ally fills with a fake smoke.
Residents then have to
make their way through
the smokey environment
to the exit at the opposite
end of the building.
It really gives people
an idea of what our fire-
fighters have to deal with
in terms of smoke,
McCormick said. It really
shows them how hard it is
to see.
Demonstrations and
and educational material
will also be available for
guests of the open house.
Theres going to be
something for everyone,
she said. I encourage ev-
eryone to come and check
it out. You wont regret it.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2014 ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION 3A
The corner of 11 Mile
and Harper came alive
with color, culture and
health Saturday thanks to
a partnership between
Beaumont Family Medical
Center and the Detroit
Institute of Arts.
SPLASH: Art and
Wellness Festival, fea-
tured everything from a
guided bus tour around
the city with stops at
each of the DIAs Inside-
Out program locations,
an art competition, an
art gallery, workout
classes and demonstra-
tions, performances
from the Grosse Pointe
Theater and free health
screenings.
Highlighting the event,
however, was a 5K color
run that began at the
Lakeview High School
track, moved along
Harper Avenue, through
the neighborhoods sur-
rounding the school, and
returned to the stadium.
All along the route, how-
ever, runners, and walkers
alike, were splashed with
nontoxic, biodegradable
brightly colored dyes. The
blend of colors turned
each contestant into a jog-
ging work of art.
I cant image what I
look like running down
the street here, said a
smiling David Pallentino
as he made his way along
the course. But Ill bet Im
attracting some attention.
Ive got neon green, pink,
orange and some hue of
red for sure. And thats
just what I can see. Its
good though. Very fun.
Nearly 200 runners and
walkers participated in the
the color run, exceeding
the expectations of those
who helped put the inau-
gural event together.
Our goal was actually
100 people, said event or-
ganizer, Dr. Asha
Shajahan. But I think we
exceeded our goal. Were
very close to 200 people.
Were very happy with
that.
Being a family physician
at Beaumont Family
Medical Center, which is
located at 11 Mile Road
and Harper, Shajahan rec-
ognized the connection
between art and wellness.
This connection served
as the impetus behind the
SPLASH festival.
We did this festival in
conjunction with the
DIA, she said. The
whole thing really started
with the DIAs Inside Out
Program, which is going
on in the city right now. I
looked at that and thought
something like this would
be a great way to educate
the community, and let
them know that health
care can be fun.
Shajahan also ex-
plained the importance of
art in wellness.
We want people to en-
gage in art as a form of be-
ing healthy, Shajahan ex-
plained. We thought the
run would be great by in-
corporating the colors into
it, and to show people that
exercise, that running, can
be fun and beneficial to
your health at the same
time.
The festival was far
more, however, than just
the color run.
The activities, perfor-
mances, exhibits and
demonstrations were all
part of the overall concept
of the festival, Shajahan
said.
Our hope is to generate
excitement around art and
medicine in the communi-
ty, she said. We want
people to see that connec-
tion between the two and
experience the joy and
benefits of connecting art
and wellness together in
their lives.
The success of this
years event is encourag-
ing to Shajahan in terms
of bringing the event to
the city in 2015.
I think its definitely
something we will look in-
to doing next year, too,
she said. As a family phy-
sician, I want to be in-
volved in the community,
have that community out-
reach in place here. And,
were trying to focus on
wellness initiatives, as
opposed to illness initia-
tives, and this is exactly
what this is, a wellness
initiative.

Its a very unique
event for St. Clair
Shores.
Now, with the second
annual In My Shoes
Womens Expo in the
books, organizers are
taking a look at how they
can improve the event
even more in 2015.
We had a lot of good
feedback from this
years expo, Debbie
Cottrell said. And we
made some improve-
ments to this year over
last year that seemed to
be really well received.
Im happy about how
things went this year.
Cottrell is the chairper-
son of the event, which is
sponsored by the
Womens Civic League of
St. Clair Shores, and she
said building this event is
not a quick process.
It takes time, Cottrell
said. We know this. You
have to try and grow each
year with it. I think weve
done that from last year
to this year, and well take
that next step next year.
Donna Silvestro, 56,
was one of hundreds who
attended the event at
Barrister Gardens last
Sunday afternoon.
I am really enjoying
myself, Silvestro said. I
especially liked talking to
the charities that are
here. I think thats a good
touch to have them at
something like this. I real-
ly do.
The civic league select-
ed A Beautiful Me and
Turning Point as its two
charitable partners for
this years event.
Each group was able to
set up an information ta-
ble and explain to patrons
just what they do and
how they help.
The admission charge
for the expo, which was
$5 per ticket, goes to the
womens civic league in
an effort to help fund the
organizations grants and
scholarship fund.

A
benefit of be-
ing a senior
is that we
have more
free time to
learn new things. One of
the fastest-growing areas
on our list of interests are
all things technological --
computers, e-readers and
smartphones.
The BDM Essential
Guide Series has a large
selection of magazine
manuals aimed at seniors
and beginners who want
to expand their knowledge
of electronic devices, or
who are considering the
purchase of electronic
gear and want to learn in
advance how theyre oper-
ated. BDMs manuals are
a combination of step-by-
step tutorial and user
guides. Here are a few of
the publications it offers:
Laptops for Seniors,
iPhones for Seniors,
Tablets for Seniors, Mac
for Seniors, Google: A
Guide for Beginners and
The Ultimate Beginners
Guide to Android.
Another good source, in
spite of its name, is the
Dummy series. Each man-
ual is loaded with graph-
ics, bold text and icons to
bring your attention to es-
pecially important infor-
mation. On Dummies.com
dont miss the Computers
for Seniors and Software
for Seniors sections.
These are basic articles
ranging from how to fix
your printer to how to use
a mouse.
If youre not a beginner,
check the whole list of
Dummy books. Youll be
surprised at the variety of
topics. Read Blogging for
Dummies if you want to
have a platform for a topic
near and dear to your
heart, or Building a Web
Site for Dummies if you
want an Internet presence.
Or how about eBay for
Seniors for Dummies as a
way to build an online
store and make a profit on
items you want to sell?
If youre part of a senior
center that gives classes
on computer use, ask if it
would consider buying
some of these materials to
have on hand. Or check
your local bookstore or at
the library.
Computer tablet
made for seniors
If youre still wary of us-
ing computer technology
because of the complica-
tions, or if you use the
computer at the library be-
cause the cost keeps you
from having your own,
AARP has good news for
you -- the RealPad tablet,
specifically designed for
seniors.
Here are a few things
that make the RealPad
good for hesitant seniors:
Theres an intuitive in-
terface to help you send
email and photos, browse
the Internet and even have
video chats. It comes al-
ready loaded with apps
(applications, or pro-
grams) and tutorial videos
on how to use the touch
screen, browse the
Internet and set up a video
call or email.

Macomb County Office of Senior

The Macomb County
Office of Senior Services
offers a new program to
protect Macomb County
seniors from ongoing
scams.
Roughly 7.3 million se-
nior citizens, 20 percent
of Americans age 65 and
over, have been taken ad-
vantage of financially
through an inappropriate
investment, unreasonably
high fees or outright
fraud.
Following are a few
common scams:
Lottery Scam: phony
lottery representatives
telling you youve won a
lottery but need to pay tax-
es up-front before collect-
ing your winnings.
Health Care Scam:
people posing as health
care officials trying to get
personal information from
you.
You might help to pre-
vent crimes against other
senior citizens. Here is
what to do to protect your-
self:
Investment and Work-
At-Home Scam:
In person if someone
knocks on your door and
makes you uncomfort-
able, promptly shut and
lock the door and call 9-1-
1.
Beware of schemes
promising big returns
for very little work.
Do not open your
door to strangers.
De c e p t i v e
Contractors: overcharg-
ing seniors or demand-
ing payment up-front
before doing work.
By phone: tell the
caller you make it a
practice to never give
out personal informa-
tion over the phone,
hang up and call the
Macomb Count y
Prosecutors Office at
(866) 498-8503.
Never reveal your fi-
nancial information to
anyone who calls you
on the phone. Hang up.
Phishing: bogus e-
mails that appear to be
from banks, businesses
or government agencies
requesting your person-
al or account informa-
tion.
E-mail: do not re-
ply, open attachments
or click on links from
unfamiliar senders.
For war d i t t o
S e n i o r S c a m s @
MacombGov.org.
Delete e-mails from
those you dont know.
Never sign contracts
that have blank lines on
them.
ID Theft: be on the
lookout for false credit-
card purchases or cash
advances. Thieves may
have obtained your per-
sonal information.
By U.S. mail: save
the mail and call the
county prosecutors of-
fice.
Do not enter
sweepstakes or con-
tests.
When in doubt,
shred all sensitive pa-
perwork.
When you need a con-
tractor for a home im-
provement job, get at
least three estimates
from reputable local
contractors.
For seniors who need

tion, call the Macomb

The fascinating
world of seniors
Its not only here in the
United States seniors
around the globe are be-
ing studied by research-
ers. We must be fascinat-
ing.
A m s t e r d a m :
Researchers studied
whether interventions af-
ter discharge from the
hospital could keep
chronically ill patients
from being readmitted in
the short, intermediate
and long term. They
looked at studies from
1980 to 2013, so they had
plenty of information.
Results: Intermediate
and long-term readmis-
sions saw a reduction
with general transitional
care, but short-term read-
missions were reduced
only with high-intensity
interventions. Those in-
clude a home visit within
three days after dis-
charge, plus care coordi-
nation by a nurse.
Europe: Researchers
discovered that those over
age 70 who assessed
themselves as having ill
health did so more in
countries that assigned a
lower value to seniors.
Across various European
cultures, the higher the
status of the elderly, the
better the seniors claimed
they felt.
United Kingdom: It
used to be that vitamin D
was thought to help pre-
vent cardiovascular dis-
ease. Now, after five years
of study, researchers say
that it wont prevent heart
attack or stroke. They sus-
pect that low vitamin D
levels are due to a seden-
tary lifestyle. More re-
search is needed, they say.
Canada: There is no
benefit to arthroscopic
knee surgery for age-re-
lated tears. In mild osteo-
arthritis, doctors need to
weigh the costs versus
benefits of surgery, and
opt for non-operative in-
terventions first.

The Macomb County
Offi ce of Seni or
Services Chore and
Home Injury Control
program is designed to
help prevent injuries in
the homes of disabled
and frail senior citizens
who could not otherwise
afford safety devices.
A one-time service can
be provided to anyone
60 years of age or older
who does not qualify for
devices under any other
funded program.
Home Injury Control
can install any of the fol-
lowing safety devices:
grab bars, transfer
benches, handhel d
shower heads and toilet
assist rails. Services are
targeted to create a
sense of bathroom safe-
ty and prevent falls.
Upon completing and
returning a simple appli-
cation, you will be con-
tacted by a chore service
representative to sched-
ule an appointment for
installation.
Temporary modu-
lar ramps
MCCSA also installs
temporary modular alu-
minum ramps on a
short-term basis for
wheelchair-bound se-
nior citizens. There is a
nominal monthly lease
fee. When the ramps are
no longer needed, they
are removed and used
for new clients. The
number of ramps is lim-
ited; a waiting list is
maintained for this proj-
ect.
Cost sharing
Seniors requesting
Home Injury Control
Service are expected to
share in the cost of pro-
viding the service. For
each service performed,
the senior should make
an appropriate contribu-
tion.
No one will be exclud-
ed from receiving ser-
vices if their income
does not permit them to
contribute at the recom-
mended level.

1B AUTOMOTIVE | 2-4B CLASSIFIEDS
SECTION B ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2014
G
reen is going glam.
Choices within a
single car makers
family of hybrids,
for example, may
seem to pit quirky against
luxurious. But when
quirky can be loaded with
upscale options, the lines
begin to blur.
Take, for example, a
top-of-the-line 2014 Prius
Five versus a 2014 Lexus
ES 300h. The capacious
Prius retains its distinctive
profile on the road and
boasts a combined city/
highway fuel economy av-
erage of 50 miles per gal-
lon. Our test car, with a
pricey technology pack-
age plus $1,600 larger
wheels and tires, offered
many of the amenities of a
Lexus and superior fuel
economy. Its total price
was $37,267.
The no-slouch-in-econ-
omy Lexus ES 300h, with
a base price of $39,350,
promised a combined 40
miles-per-gallon city/high-
way average. Its base price
was $39,350; added op-
tions brought the total to
$44,710.
The Lexus was, we
thought, decidedly easier
on the eye and quieter and
more comfortable. It wore
its luxury label modestly
and confidently.
Toyota offers the 2014
Prius in four model
grades: Prius Two, Three,
Four and Five. As the mod-
el numbers increase, so do
options and prices. All are
powered by the combined
efforts of a 1.8-liter
Atkinson-cycle four with
an electric motor. Together
they product a net 134
horsepower. The Prius
does 0 to 60 mph in just
under 10 seconds and has
a top speed of 112 mph.
Toyota says the Prius
can run on the gasoline
engine alone, battery
alone, or a combination of
both. The driver can select
from among driving
modes that include
Normal, Power, ECo and
EV. The EV Mode allows
driving on battery power
alone at low speeds for
about a mile, if conditions
permit.
All models include the
companys Star Safety
System with traction con-
trol, vehicle stability con-
trol and smart stop tech-
nology brake-override
system. A dynamic radar
cruise control system is an
available option as is the
Safety Connect telematics
system with automatic col-
lision notification, stolen
vehicle locator, emergency
assistance button and
roadside assistance.
Figuring drivers like to
have fun, too,Toyota has
the dealer-installed PLUS
Performance accessory
package that includes an
aerodynamic ground ef-
fects kit for a lower-profile
stance while minding the
cars coefficient of drag for
the best fuel economy.
Prius Four and Five
models feature SofTex-
trimmed heater front
seats, an eight-way power
adjustable drivers seat, an
auto-dimming rearview
mirror with HomeLink
universal transceiver and
projector-beam halogen
headlamps with auto on/
off. Prius Five adds
17-inch 10-spoke allow
wheels, LED headlamps
with auto level control and
integrated fog lamps.
Lexus ups the ante
Our Lexus ES 300h
pampered driver and pas-
sengers with leather-like
NuLuxe-clad seats
heated/cooled up front
and separate vent controls
to keep rear-seat passen-
gers comfortable. Leather
is available but not stan-
dard.
The ES hybrid sedan
joined the Lexus/Toyota
hybrid lineup a year ago as
a 2013 model. It uses a
2.5-liter four-cylinder gas
engine coupled with an
electric motor to develop a
combined 200 horsepower
output and deliver 39
miles per gallon highway
and 40 miles per gallon
city. The ES Hybrid runs
on regular gas.
The ES 300h offers the
same driving modes as the
Prius: Normal, Sport, Eco
and EV. And like its cousin,
its top speed is estimated
to be 112 mph.
Our ES 300h included
more than $4,000 in op-
tions: heated and ventilat-
ed front seats; a navigation
system with voice com-
mand plus backup cam-
era; a premium package
with memory seats, mir-
rors and steering wheel;
rain-sensing wipers with
de-icer; and wood/leather-
trimmed shift knob and
bamboo steering wheel.
There are several op-
tions packages available
for the Lexus ES Hybrid.
The latest safety fea-
tures such as lane depar-
ture warning, a pre-colli-
sion system and park as-
sist are available as extra-
cost items.
Both the Lexus ES
Hybrid and Prius are built
overseas.
