File extension: .

jpg
Name: Joint Photographic Experts Group
Raster/vector: Raster
Advantages: JPEG is widely supported and is standard for both digital
photography and the Internet.
Its variable compression allows you to c0hange the file size easily.
Disadvantages: JPEG is not suitable for simpler pictures that contain
few colours or broad areas of similar colour or stark differences in
brightness.
There is some loss of quality when a file is compressed.
Examples: JPEGs are used when sending email as it helps to make an
image smaller to email or digital photography.

File extension: .tif
Name: Tagged Image File Format
Raster/vector: Raster
Advantages: TIFF is widely supported and is standard on many
computers and is often used when scanning images or work pages.
Both Mac and Windows computers support it.
Disadvantages: web browsers dont support TIFF.
It also does not compress automatically so it creates a large file size.
Examples: TIFF is usually used to scan in sketches within this line of
work.

File extension: .png
Name: Portable Network Graphics
Raster/vector: Raster
Advantages: PNG is a platform-independent format. It supports high-
level lossless compression and transparency.
More recent web browsers support PNG.
Disadvantages: Older browsers and programs may not support PNG.
Offers no support for animated files.
Examples: creating logos for websites with transparent backgrounds.

File extension: .bmp
Name: Window Bitmap
Raster/vector: Raster
Advantages: Supports a wide range of colour.
The BMP format is widely compatible with existing Windows programs,
especially older programs.
Disadvantages: BMP does not support compression, which results in
very large files.
Web browsers do not support BMP files.
Only used by windows computers.
Examples: If you work in an office with windows computers then BMP is
probably used.

File extension: .gif
Name: Graphics Interchange Format
Raster/vector: Raster
Advantages: GIF is a widely supported Internet standard.
It has lossless compression and transparency.
Animated GIF.
Disadvantages: There is a maximum of 256 colours therefore detailed
pictures and photo realistic images loose colour information.
Lossless compression and transparency are limited and inferior to other
formats.
Examples: Creating a moving logo for a web page.

File extension: .psd
Name: Photoshop Document
Raster/vector: Raster
Advantages: Allows images to be stored in layers.
Can be imported into other software programs, such as after effects and
titles.
You can also create and manipulate vector graphics.
Disadvantages: Is a very large file so will need to be saved as a
smaller file if you want to share it.
Does not work with all programs.
The vector graphics function is limited and more a specialized software
may be more useful.
Examples: Creating images from scratch.

File extension: .cgm
Name: Computer Graphics Metafile
Raster/vector: Both
Advantages: Free file format which works on many systems.
International standard.
Disadvantages: In some programs it needs a filter to convert it.
Examples: If a company is in another country they can still access the
work being produced.

File extension: .pdf
Name: Portable Document Format
Raster/vector: Both
Advantages: Can be opened on any system
Small file size is easy to share.
Nobody else can edit it.
Disadvantages: Cannot manipulate images once they are saved to this
format.
Examples: Put examples of past work on the Internet where no one can
manipulate the image.

Raster Graphics

Raster graphics use pixels to store the data.
Each square is a pixel. One pixel contains one bit of data.
If you zoom into a raster file you will see lots of pixels making
up the images.
Cameras and scanners will produce work in raster files, so they
will need to stay as raster file when being edited.

Vector Graphics

Vector graphics use mathematic equations (points, lines,
curves, shapes or polygons) to store the data.
Vector graphics will stay perfect quality no matter how far you
zoom in.
Raster graphics will often be turned into vector graphics for
printing, because it is so easy to resize without changing
quality.
Not all computer programs support all types of vector graphics.
So if you want to work in many different programs you would be
better to save as a more universally compatible raster file.
