M. 87108 May 5, 1986 Dear Christian Friends, About a week ago Beverly died. We turned off the life-support apparatus on Tuesday, the 29th. The next day was the funeral. She was buried in El Paso, beside Norma Maxey, Tibbs*s wife. Obviously it is not God's main priority to heal His people. I can understand how such an arrangement would destroy His plan to save us all. The whole world would rush into the church to avoid sickness. Then where would the Christians hide? We have seen God work in wonderful ways. In March last year Joanne returned home and spent the last year with Beverly. In September Beverly attended her mother's 80th birthday with her whole family. She seemed well in January, and attended our annual conference. The last week of January I got to attend a conference at which unity and fellowship were solidified. Beverly didn't suffer during her sickness. The treatment in El Paso prolonged her life six weeks. We thought it was beginning to make her well. I took her to our apartment Saturday afternoon. An hour and a half later she suffered a sie- zure and lost consciousness. I believe she died the next day. Joanne and John have not been taught to travel great distances to attend funerals. John is finishing his school year. They plan to come to the U.S. on June 7. Joanne is accepted at Abilene Chris tian University. John and I plan to return to Brazil August 3. God has given us strength beyond what we had experienced before. We plan to visit most of you this summer. Please continue to pray for God's strengthening and guidance. We don't have to understand any "why's"; what we have to do is serve Him. He is still Lord, and we are still the servants. One of Beverly's brothers suggested a memorial fund. Beverly was greatly concerned that the churches have a way to acquire ade quate buildings without waiting years and years. So the Beverly Bayless Memorial Fund is for this purpose. Several have already sent to it. The address is the same given above. Youm in Christ, for HORIZONS MAY 30 mQ BEVERLY BAYLESS Beverly Bayless, wife of David Bayless, missionary to Belem, Brazil, died April 29 of cancer, in El Paso, Texas. She had been sick for three months. Beverly's work in Brazil, since 1959, was in training teachers in the churches, and teaching evangelism by personal demonstration, to ladies in the churches. She was active in teaching and planning VBS and other activities. = David and their son, John, plan to return to Brazil August 3, and Joanne, their daughter, will enter Abilene Christian University in the fall. A memorial fund has been established in Beverly's memory, for a great concern of hers, helping new churches to be able to have adequate buildings sooner than would be possible without outside assistance. The address is Beverly Bayless Memorial Fund, 5300 Eastern Avenue, SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108. / s CHRIST FDR THE AMAZON VALLEY, Inc. DAVIDM. M. 87108 May 27, 1986 Christian Friends, Probably it would be impossible to count all the notes, cards, and expressions of sympathy and solidarity in a sad time, since Beverly*s death last month. It really is a comfort to know that so many people care and are praying for God*s strength for the children and me. We have received so much strength from God, and thank Him for it. And I want to thank you who have written, sent notes, and called. Joanne and John are doing fine. They should be flying Friday night, June 6, and arriving in Albuquerque the afternoon or evening of June 7. We plan to be in camp together at the beautiful El Porvenir Camp the first week, then travel together until John and I return to Brazil August 3. It has been a personal satisfaction to see how many of our friends have wanted to participate in a memorial to Beverly, and a cause she was so much concerned about-- the buildings for new churches in Brazil. Nearly $2000 has been received so far. Some of it has been sent to one of the churches, and already delivered. It shouldn't be long before most of it is employed in construction. The past two weekends I have visited churches in Texas and New Mexico. The children and I plan to visit others in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Also we plan to attend the North American Christian Convention, where I am to participate in a workshop. The last days of July we will take Joanne to meet my cousins near Abilene, Texas, where she will be staying until classes begin September 1 in Abilene Christian University. Then John and I will go to Dallas to fly to Brazil at 11:55 p.m., Sunday, August 3. We should arrive back home about 4:30 p.m. on Monday, the 4th. Please pray for us as we return, and Joanne in college. There is so much work to be done. What we all must do is just keep on. I thank God that Beverly didn't suffer, that she was able to be with her whole family last summer for her mother's 80th birthday, and that Joanne spent the last year with her. And she had a great happiness her last week. Yoars in Christ, CHRIST FDR THE AMAZON VALLEY, Inc. DAVID M.BAYLESS CAIXA POSTAL 926 66000 BELCM, PARA. M. 87108 September, 1986, Newsletter Dear Christian Friends, John and I left Joanne in Texas, and have been back over a month. Her address is ACU Station, Box 7100, Abilene, TX 79699. She's a sophomore at Abilene Christian University. She's happy, and we're glad to be back. I'm giving orientation to leaders again, on Mondays to the elders of the Cidade Nova church. They have added five men this year, with their families. And they are evangelizing several families. The memorial fund for Beverly is helping them finish their building so it can pass inspection by the education department, for their school to operate. $4100 has come for the Memorial Fhnd. My Tuesday disciples lead the Rodovia church. Their new building, to seat 150, is being helped to completion by the memorial fund. They are natural evangelists, and say they can fill the building. Two of them are beginning new churches. That makes the orientation more thrilling. My Wednesday disciple, Francisco, was so poor a year ago, he didn't have enough to eat. He has been blessed by God, and is relatively wealthy, practicing principles from Proverbs in his new business. He is maturing spiritually as well, and gives the church good leadership against opposition. God has cared for us in wonderful ways'. First, the Sloans moved into our house when Beverly and I had to leave. They .took care of everything till John and I got back. Then Ricardo, a young pilot, and Margarida, his bride of three months, moved in with us. It's been a tremendous blessing! I want you to pray with me for the opportunity to help the Outeiro Road church get leadership training started. They have nearly 200 members. They need this, but don't realize it. They are too satisfied. Our group is selling the land where the print shop used to operate. With part of the proceeds we are putting up a huge covered area on the churches' retreat area. They have done good work in developing the area. We also plan to buy a computerized type-setting machine, which the print shop needs. I continue to manage the print shop. I hope within a couple of weeks to be developing more teaching materials. We've been printing VBS material. I thank God for the 27 years with Beverly, and for her not having suffered. Also for Joanne's return to spend the last year with her, and for a beautiful letter from John which we received the last day she could understand things. I thank Him for you who helped us so much. And I thank Him for these blessings every day. He is wonderful, and so are you Christian friends. ALBUQUERQUE, NEWMEXICO87108 Forwarding Agent J FRED BAYLESS 5300 Eastern Avenue, S. E, Albuquerque, N. M. 87108 f The Bayless Family, Missionaries For a church to grow and develop, it must have leaders. Usually the kind of man who can be a leader Isn't one who just happens in to a meeting. So it is necessary to look for men-to go after them. And they must be adequately prepared. If we go after men first, we eventually get the whole family. This also makes it possible to have leaders right from the beginning. If we do not get men at first, the church will likely be composed of women and children. There will be no leadership. And there will be the problem of a jealous husband-jealous of the church or someone in the church. So in their work the Baylesses have begun with men, whom they train by showing them how to do the work that the Bible says they should do. Practical studies are used to enable them to teach and build up the churches, while they themselves are built up spiritually. David manages a print shop which produces this kind of materials. Beverly taught a number of women the principles and application of teaching. One of them teaches other women what she learned. A few of the men David teaches are reaching out to other areas, beginning new churches. The government of Brazil has made some progress in combatting inflation, with a price and wage freeze. Buying power for ordinary people has increased. Joanne is a sophomore at A.C.U., studying Home Economics Education. Her address: ACU Station, Box 7100, Abilene, TX 79699. Her strong desire is to work in Brazil. John is a junior in the Amazon Valley Academy in Beldm. He is a good soccer player, and enjoys all sports. He is active in the church youth group, and is a good leader of the church services. God has showered blessings on David and John, to help with the ordinary tasks of daily life, since Beverly's death. It has not been necessary to curtail any activities. The Memorial Fund, in favor of Beverly's strong desire to see new churches have adequate facilities, has helped several of them to speed their construction along. The Baylesses hope that the principles mentioned here will help supporters and friends understand how their work is done, and why. They are always happy to correspond with all who are interested.
