T
he Estes Park Music Fes-
tival has received a grant
of $4000 from Colorado
Creative Industries (CCI),
a division of the Colorado Office
of Economic Development and
International Trade. This grant
was awarded through CCIs 2014-
15 Grant Program and will sup-
port the activities of the Estes
Park Music Festival in the
upcoming year.
State grants are awarded
through a competitive process.
This grant signifies that the Estes
Park Music Festival provides a
high-level of quality in its pro-
grams, community service and
administrative ability. Keith Ham-
mond, President of the Estes
Park Music Festival, said This is
an exciting award for us. Funding
for the kind of musical programs
our audiences enjoy and appreci-
ate is hard to come by. Ticket
prices do not cover the entire cost
of a concert, so the difference has
to come from a combination of
individual donors, our local busi-
ness partners and grants like this.

We are so grateful to be the
recipient of this award.
Now entering its 39th
year, the nonprofit Estes
Park Music Festival pro-
vides two dozen concerts
between October and April
and three major orchestral
concerts during the sum-
mer. These concerts bene-
fit the community in many
different ways. They add to
the quality of life of full-
time residents by making
cultural events available to
those who might find it dif-
ficult to travel to the Den-
ver metro area due to
mobility issues or cost con-
cerns. They provide expo-
sure to classical music for
children and students, who
are admitted free of charge.
They also provide an eco-
nomic benefit to our town
from the many tourists who
seek opportunities to
attend cultural events while
visiting this beautiful area.
The EPMF board of direc-
tors is committed to the fair
compensation of the very
talented soloists, ensem-
bles and choral groups who
perform at these concerts,
most of whom reside in
Colorado, thereby contrib-
uting to the economic well-
being of Colorados music
industry. This grant will
significantly aid in the con-
tinued effort to provide
Estes Park residents musi-
cal programs that enter-
tain, educate and delight.

are the focus

Monday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.
at the Estes Valley Library.
These small enclosures are
becoming popular around
the U.S., and they may con-
sist of one or two shelves
within an enclosure (like a
big birdhouse, perhaps
decorated and with a small
window on its front door)
where neighbors can bor-
row, return and share
books with one another.
Teens and adults alike
are encouraged to attend
and consider volunteering
for the project, with the
library helping to cover
supply costs.
During the meeting,
library staff will begin by
explaining the program,
showing examples, and
brainstorming possible
locations and design ideas.
The session will provide
design requirements and
help to connect potential
woodcrafters interested in
building the structures
with potential artists to
help decorate them.

12 SEPTEMBER 26, 2014 ESTES PARK INSIDE & OUT
C
atherine and I took
a jaunt to Granada,
down in southeast-
ern Colorado. I
filled in for a friend of mine
who was unable to do the
show.
The show took place for
the Granada Pride Commit-
tee, at a chuck wagon style
dinner at the End of the Line
Arena, Camp Amanche, near
Granada, and was hosted by
Fred and Nora Dorenkamp.
Fred and Nora Doren-
kamp were honored by the
Professional Rodeo Cowboys
Association in 2013.
While I was setting up my
equipment, I often got
stalled. The walls were lined
with photographs of some of
the most famous rodeo
hands, some in the timed
events, but mostly bronc rid-
ers and broncs, whose
names I had idolized. One
great picture, that I had nev-
er seen before, near the top
center was of Fred, gapped
about as wide as possible on
a bronc at the top of its
jump. And this was in the era
of the raggy bareback rig-
gings, so much different
than the rawhide and metal
ones of today.
I mentioned a fellow in my
hometown, Fred McAdams,
who was a bronc rider in the
Turtle Association days,
whom Fred Dorenkamp had
known. Fred M. gave me his
old bareback rigging when I
started out. That riggin was
at a whole bunch of big
name rodeos. A lot more
than I ever got to.
Down in the corner was a
picture of a Las Animas high
school football team, with
the name of Curtis Gates
written under the player
wearing # 44. Curtis Gates
was the name of Ken Curtis,
who, before he played the
part of Festus, in the televi-
sion series of Gunsmoke,
sang with the Tommy Dors-
ey band, in Frank Sinatras
place, and later on with the
Sons of The Pioneers for sev-
eral years.
While we were talking
about him, Fred mentioned
that Ruth, the mule Festus
rode in Gunsmoke, also
came from the same area.
On our way home, we
stopped at the information
center for the Camp Aman-
che Japanese Relocation
Center.
One of ten Japanese Relo-
cation Centers in the nation,
Camp Amanche was the
home of nearly 8,000 Japa-
nese, United States Citizens
during World War II. We
spent a couple of hours look-
ing at the area, reading the
information and learning
what we had barely heard of
in U.S. History class.What
an eye opener. It took only
an executive order to essen-
tially incarcerate thousands
of U.S. Citizens.
We also spent time at
Bents old Fort. It is quite a
lot smaller and nothing like
the western forts shown in
most movies. Much of the
stuff inside were things both
Catherine and I had read
about. Ive long been inter-
ested in the mountain men
era, but one of the Rangers
there mentioned the closest
mountain was about thirty
five miles away. As far as I
can remember, I never heard
of prairie men. Well,
except cowboys and home-
steaders.
It was a fun little trip to an
area we probably would not
have gone to if I hadnt been
there to entertain.

G
ail Woerner will
present on West-
ern Women Who
Dared to be Dif-
ferent at the Estes Park
Museum on Wednesday,
Oct. 1 beginning at 3: p.m.
Woerner is the author of a
book of the same title and
five others on rodeo histo-
ry. In this program she will
share how she came to
research and write the
books on the history of the
west, especially rodeo. This
is a free program and no
reservations are required.
Woerner explained I felt
I had short-changed the
amazing women I had met
during this time, and decid-
ed to tell their stories. That
is how Western Women
Who Dared to be Different
came to be. Most had some
serious hardships they
encountered, and in spite
of it, they went on to do
amazing things, in various
different ways. I hope their
stories inspire women and
men to do wonderful
things in their lives. Gail
Woerner was raised on a
ranch near Willard, in
northeastern Colorado,
homesteaded by her great-
grandparents. She grew up
working cattle and break-
ing horses with her grand-
father. She moved to Texas
in 1956, and presently
resides on Lake Travis,
outside Austin. Her first
book was on her home
community: Willard, Colo-
rado, A Special Place in
Time.
In addition to the titles
mentioned earlier, she
authored five books on
rodeo history: Fearless
Funnymen, the History of
the Rodeo Clown, Belly
Full of Bedsprings, The
History of Bronc Riding,
Cowboy Up! The History
of Bull Riding, Rope to
Win, The History of Steer,
Calf & Team Roping, and
a childrens book entitled
Charley & Amanda Meet
Rusty the Rodeo Clown.
Woerner contributed
articles for various west-
ern-related magazines as
well, including: The Ketch
Pen, American Cowboy
Magazine, and Western
Horseman. For more than
ten years, her column
Behind the Chutes &
Elsewhere on the website:

explores various rodeo
cowboys and cowgirls of
the past, and chronicles
western events she
attends.
Woerner is Chairman of
