Example
Six Sigma
Is a management methodology
Customer focused
Data driven decisions
Breakthrough performance gains
Validated bottom line results
Six Sigma Was Developed at Motorola in the 1980s as a Method to
Improve Process Quality.
It Was First Used to Improve Manufacturing Process Capability and then
Migrated to Business Processes Capability
Companies That Have Deployed Six Sigma: Bank of America, Motorola,
GE, IBM, Kodak and Many More
The Basic Premise Is, All Processes Have Variation. Variation Is the
Enemy

Example
Companies are embracing Six Sigma not only to reduce defects but also as a
catalyst to change the culture of their company and impact how employees
engage in their everyday work
Six Sigma seeks to improve the quality of process outputs by identifying and
removing the causes of defects (errors) and minimizing variability in
manufacturing and business processes
A six-sigma process is one in which 99.99966% of the products
manufactured are free of defects

Six Sigma Projects Methodologies
DMAIC for improving an existing business process
MADV for creating new product or process designs
DMAIC
Phase of DMAIC

Key Roles in Six Sigma Implementation
Executive Leadership (CEO, COO, other members of top
management)
Champions (implementation across the organization in an integrated
manner)
Master Black Belts (devote 100% of their time to Six Sigma). They
assist champions and guide Black Belts and Green Belts
Black Belts apply Six Sigma methodology to specific projects.
Green Belts, take up Six Sigma implementation along with their other
job responsibilities.
Yellow Belts, trained in the basic application of Six Sigma

ISO
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
Based in Geneva, Switzerland
Established in 1947 to promote standards in international trade,
communications, and manufacturing
Nongovernmental organization without authority to impose its standards
National Standards Bodies
American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
British Standards Institution (BSI)
Deutsches Institut fr Normung (DIN)
Japanese Industrial Standards Committee (JISC)
Standards Council of Canada (SCC)
Saudi Arabian Standards Organization (SASO)
A national standards body is likely the sole member from that economy in ISO.

Example
ISO 9000
A family of standards for quality management systems. ISO 9000 is maintained
by ISO and administered by accreditation and certification bodies.
ISO 9000:1994
9001: firms designing and producing products
9002: firms producing products
9003: testing, distribution facilities
ISO 9000: 2000
A fundamental change in approach
Standard now is closely aligned with Total Quality Management
philosophy
Incorporates eight quality principles
Significantly reduces documentation requirements
Allows more flexibility in choice of documentation system

Example
ISO 9000: 2008
ISO 9001:2008 contains no new requirements compared to the 2000 edition. It
provides clarifications based on eight years experience of implementing the
previous standard worldwide.
The Eight Quality Management Principles Applied to ISO 9000: 2008
1. Customer focus
2. Leadership
3. Involvement of people
4. Process approach
5. System approach to management
6. Continual improvement
7. Factual approach to decision making
8. Mutually beneficial supplier relationships

Step 2: Establish implementation team
Step 3. Start ISO 9000 awareness programs
Step 4: Provide Training
Step 5. Conduct initial status survey
Step 6: Create a documented implementation plan
Step 7. Develop quality management system documentation
Step 8: Document control
Step 9. Implementation

Document Control
A cornerstone of the quality management system (QMS) is the control of
documents
Document Control Requirement
A documented procedure shall be established to define the controls needed
1. to approve documents for adequacy prior to issue,
2. to review and update as necessary and re-approve documents,
3. to ensure that changes and the current revision status of documents
are identified,
4. to ensure that relevant versions of applicable documents are
available at points of use,
5. to ensure that documents remain legible and readily identifiable,
6. to ensure that documents of external origin determined by the
organization to be necessary for the planning and operation of the
quality management system are identified and their distribution
controlled
7. to prevent the unintended use of obsolete documents, and to apply
suitable identification to them if they are retained for any purpose.
