ABSTRACT: The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and the controversial Code

Division Multiple Access (CDMA) has already been discussed in length in global telecom
circles. Today there is another revolutionary technology- The Personal Access Sste!
(PAS)-doing the telecom rounds. Brought to India by the US based telecom equipment
manufacturer, UT Starcom, this wireless access system is capable of providing high quality
data and voice services. Having, already made its waves in hina, this technology is now
being tested by !ahanagar Telephone "igam #imited in $elhi. %&S offers the consumers
the convenience of a mobile phone with the cost advantage of a fi'ed line phone. In
contrast to highly competitive and more costly mobile mar(et, %&S has the advantage of
being light weight, long battery life, with the additional support of high speed data
transmission at low cost to the consumers.
Traditional mobile systems such as the Advanced Mo"ile Personal Service
(AMPS) and the Glo"al Sste! #or Mo"ile Co!!unication (GSM) required specific
switches such as the !obile station controllers )!S*s+, and databases )H#,, -#,+ to
support their services. %&S, in contrast uses the Advanced $ntelli%ence &et'ork (A$&)
protocol, where the general &I" switch and the S% provide a fle'ibility to implement this
application. The architecture of the system gives application of the various elements of the
system such as the AIN/ISDN switch, the AIN/ISDN inter working. The system comprises of
two interfaces the AIN interface and the ISDN interface, which establishes the
communication between the various elements of the system. The wor(ing of the system
can be divided into three categories, the Wireless Remote Terminal, the Radio System, the
Suscriers Terminals.
The %&S offers two different types of customer terminals.
PAS handsets #or cordless
PAS ter!inals #or #i(ed 'ireless
This system offers a variety of services including a complete set of !asic "oice Ser#ices,
Su$$lementary "oice Ser#ices, S%S, %oile Internet Access, and &ocation !ased
Information Ser#ices. The most stri(ing advantage of the system is that the '(S $hone
does not sto$ working when there is a $ower failure unlike con#entional cordless $hone
system. &ddition or deletion of subscribers does not affect the low operational e'penditure
of the system. The requirement of %&S in India can be viewed from the aspects of the
system*s being highly cost effective, modular, which allows operators to rapidly provide the
system in different topologies.
