Fundraising Recommendations to Goodwill Baptist Church

prepared by Derwin Dubose

1. Build a campaign committee to direct your fundraising efforts.

This committee should be composed of major donors to the church who
can effectively plan the campaign, explain your plans to others and
convince them to give. Bringing a successful committee together is a
careful process, and the right people must be on board to make it a
success. In essence, all parts of the campaign and the rest of the following
steps are the responsibility of this committee.

2. Develop a comprehensive campaign plan that outlines fundraising

strategies, prospective donors, job descriptions for campaign leadership,
reporting requirements, measurable items, donor acknowledgement, and a
timeline for all campaign actions.

3. Develop a case for giving. You have to come up with articulate

language that explains why people should give and that compels them to
do so. Although people should be motivated by the fact that it is the
church, people seldom give for the simple reasons alone. This case should
be developed into a case statement, a written and professionally printed
document that can be given to donors. The case statement should
complete the following statements: “I am...., We are..., We want..., We
do...., Because...” The case statement should be accompanied by pledge
cards and other materials.

4. Secure the support (financial and otherwise) of 100% of your

church leadership. This includes your clergy, deacons, deaconesses,
trustees, committee chairs and other officers. All of those leaders should
be expected to pledge to the building fund – no matter how small the
donation may be. They key is to show solidarity to your members and the
community that the church's leadership is fully behind the building plans.

5. Solicit your membership. After securing the support of your

leadership and developing concise materials about your building plans,
you should be able to better approach your members to give to the
building fund. You should give them updates on the campaign's progress
and stress that Goodwill needs 100% member participation – no matter
how small the donation is. Also, you should not rely on church service
solicitations alone. The campaign committee and church leadership should
meet with members face-to-face, and if possible, in their homes, to update
them and get their support.

6. Identify non-members and ask for their support. You should ask
former members, family and friends of members, friends of the church,
elected officials, community groups and community leaders.
7. Identify businesses to donate. Consider asking all of the church's
vendors, members' employers, and potential in-kind donors.

8. Acknowledge and steward your donors. Find appropriate,

meaningful, and creative was to thank your donors throughout the
campaign and after. Donors can become lifetime donors and regular
tithers if they are thanked and feel actively engaged in the mission and
work of the church.

This is not a complete list of recommendations, and I would be honored to share

more thoughts with you and help Goodwill in any way possible. I can provide
coaching to your fundraising leaders on building a campaign committee and
navigating the fundraising process, training for your church leadership and
members, helping develop the materials you need, and sample documents and
training material.
