Lesson Objective

Do Now

By the end of the lesson, we will be able to ____________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________

(AZ-7.RP.A.1) Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or

different units.

Proportions Review

Write a corresponding proportion for each of the word problems.

1. A farmer is selling his fresh produce at a local market. He sells five pumpkins for every seven

tomatoes. Which proportion below would determine how many tomatoes he could sell if he sold

8 pumpkins? Show your work/labels.

2. A bag of M & Ms is packaged according to color. There are three red candies for every two

green ones. If a giant bag has 4 candies, which proportion below would solve for how many

green candies there are? Show your work/labels.

Fractions and Equations Review

Remember, to solve for equations with fractions we multiply by the reciprocal.

Essential Vocabulary

Teacher Model

Lets look at the four examples. Read the problems and notice that the answer can be found by

writing a proportion. There are other ways as well. Be sure to label your answer as a rate.

A _________ expressed with a quantity of ________

The process of describing how one ____________

changes in relation to ____________ quantity

Jane is planting a mixture of flowers. For

every ounce of marigold seeds she uses one-

seventh of an ounce of lupine seeds. How

many ounces of marigold seeds does Jane need

if she used one ounce of lupine seeds?

George has a writing assignment. He can write

one-third of a page every 1/5 of a minute. At

that rate, how long will it take for him to write

one whole page?

George has a writing assignment. He can write

four pages every twenty minutes. At that rate,

how long will it take for him to write his

fifteen-page assignment?

Jane is planting a mixture of flowers. For

every two ounces of marigold seeds she uses

three ounces of lupine seeds. How many

ounces of marigold seeds does Jane need if

she used nine ounce of lupine seeds?

Guided Practice

.

Practice A. A recipe calls for

3

2

cups of sugar for every two cups of flour. If the recipe

is adjusted for a larger serving and calls for 6 cups of sugar, how much flour will need

to be used in order to keep the proportion of flour to sugar the same?

Practice B. Tim runs

1

3

of a mile in the same time that it takes Joe to run 1 mile. If Tim

runs a total distance of 4 miles, how far was Joe able to run?

Practice C. Jane is planting a mixture of flowers. For every ounce of marigold seeds

she uses three-sevenths of an ounce of lupine seeds. How many ounces of marigold

seeds does Jane need if she used one ounce of lupine seeds?

Steps: Solving Proportions with Fractions

1. Write a proportion with the given values

2. Cross multiply and set up a one-step equations

3. Multiply by the reciprocal in order to solve for x

Partner Practice

Set up a proportion and solve for the missing value. Follow your steps. Be prepared to

respond to questions.

1. A recipe calls for

1

4

cups of sugar for every one cup of flour. If the recipe is adjusted

for a larger serving and calls for 2 cups of sugar, how much flour will need to be used in

order to keep the proportion of flour to sugar the same?

2. Tim runs

4

of a mile in the same time that it takes Joe to run 1 mile. If Tim runs a

total distance of 3 miles, how far was Joe able to run?

3. Jane is planting a mixture of flowers. For every ounce of marigold seeds she uses

two-fifths of an ounce of lupine seeds. How many ounces of marigold seeds does Jane

need if she used one ounce of lupine seeds?
