PERIODIC FUNCTIONS AND RATES OF CHANGE

1. The Musgrave Pool holds 500 litres of water. On cleaning day, the water needs to be drained through
its drainage system in 20 minutes. In this case, Torricellis Law states that the volume V litres
remaining in the pool after t minutes is given by:
(

Find the average rate at which the water is drained from the tank for the first 10 minutes.

2. Bryan is curious about the rate at which water is drained at different times in Question 1 above. He
thinks that he observed the rate of drainage at 10 minutes to be more than at 2 minutes.
You are to describe/explain a method that John could use from his current knowledge, which will
allow him to make a reasonable comparison of rate of water drainage at these two times, in order to
decide if his observation, as outlined above, is correct.

Question 2
3. An empty tire with a diameter of 50cm was rolled across the ground. A piece of pink sticky tape was
attached to the tire as it rolls and it was discovered that it takes 5 seconds for the sticky tape to make
a full revolution. If the tire was rolling on a foot path 10cm above the ground, find a way to represent
a periodic relationship between the sticky tape and the ground level with respect to time.

Model the movement of the height of one of the cars above the ground with a relevant trigonometric
function. Explain each component of your equation fully, clearly stating any assumptions made.

4. Express the equation y=4cos[(5x+10)]+3 as a Sine function and a different Cosine function
Make sure all 3 functions match by using your ClassPad to draw them all on the same screen.

5 The Brisbane River is highly affected by the southern pacific oceans tides, and the Brisbane City Council has
discovered that the height of the tide with respect to any given time can be described as: ()

Where t is the time in hours after 2 am and each 1t = 1 hour after 6, not that positive height values means upstream
height, negative height values means moving downstream height.

Sketch this curve on your classpad and use the sketch to determine
a. the maximum and minimum the tides can reach in the next 12 hours.
b. What is the height at 3pm?
c. At what time/s will the tide be moving downstream at 1.17m?

6. The displacement, s metres, of a roller coaster is given by where t is the time from 0, in seconds.
Use an interval of 0.01 to estimate the gradient of the curve at these points accurate to 2 decimal places.,
at the point where t is:
a 10 seconds d 0 seconds

e Now describe the velocity of the roller-coaster over the first 20 seconds.
f Sketch the Velocity Time Graph (for the first 20 seconds) and then explore and describe the acceleration of the
roller coaster for the first 20 seconds.

7. A parabola has a turning point ( 5 , 7 ) and a y intercept at -4. What is the instantaneous rate of change at x = 8?

-5x + 6 as depicted below shows the state of Shelleys bank balance (in thousands of dollars)
where t is the time in years from the time after she bought a house.

a Find the rate of change of her bank balance after 1 year.

b If this rate of change (the rate you have just
calculated) had continued when would she have
had nothing in the bank? Mathematically justify
your answer

c Compare this with the actual time at which
she had nothing in the bank.

d If she didnt buy the house, Shellys bank
balance could be depicted using the formula y
= 0.5x

+ 6. How long will it take before Shelleys new bank balance matches what she would have had?

8. The profile of a deep ravine can be modelled using the function:
d =2x
2
- 29x, where d is the depth of the ravine at distance x across the
ravine, both in metres, as shown below.

Showing all working, determine how far across the ravine is and what
the greatest depth of the ravine is. Show all work.

10. A farmer has 4 km of fencing to enclose a rectangular paddock. There is to be a gate of length 15
metres on each of the shorter sides of the paddock. The gates require no fencing. If she uses x metres of
fencing on the longer sides, and y metres of fencing on the shorter than find a quadratic equation for the area
A in terms of x only and hence find the maximum area the farmer can enclose.
11
A stone follows a parabolic path when it is thrown off
the top of a 40 metre high cliff as shown. The stones
reaches a maximum height of 52 metres above the water
when it is exactly 6 metres out from the cliff.
Find a rule for the height of the stone (h) in terms of x
( its horizontal distance from the cliff) and use this rule to
find how far from the cliff edge it will hit the water.
