For Magdalena Koen, this song constitutes an incredibly intense reflection on why we are here and what comes after we are dead. You can call this song religious or not. But the ending with the line Im coming, Im coming here is someone who can see the light of the Apocalypse. Hugo Wolf wrote 53 settings of poems by Eduard Mrike in a burst of frenetic creativity lasting 10 months in 1888. In some cases he composed as many as two or three songs in the course of a single day. They are works of often nervous intensity, their harmonic writing taking its cue from Wagners great model and achieving a rare degree of expressivity. In every case, the composers aim was in his own words the inward and intimate fusion of poetry and music. Magdalena Koen views them almost as personal dramas. Wolf is incredibly intense and dramatic, his sacred songs tell us less about an objectifiable God than about a persons feelings towards God. For me, it is this that results in their enormous emo- tionality. There is something highly personal here, some- thing that every performers singing must reflect. Henry Purcells almost operatic cantata The Blessed Virgins Expostulation for soprano and continuo describes the Virgin Marys concern for her son Jesus and culmi- nates in a dramatic outburst that takes the form of a magnificent musical image of her fear that the guardian angel Gabriel may have abandoned both her and her son. Two practically unknown works that date from the years around 1880 are Antonn Dvoks and Giuseppe Verdis settings of the Ave Maria. For all the simplicity of Dvoks version, his piece achieves a peculiar intensity of textual interpretation thanks to its use of melismata, while Verdi begins by adopting a declamatory style, before modulating from Bminor to the major at the words Vergine benedetta to achieve a sense of lyrical resolution and redemption. Georges Bizets Agnus Dei is based on the Inter- mezzo from his second LArlsienne suite, although Bizet himself is unlikely to have made this arrangement, which was performed at his funeral in 1875. In 1914 some Jewish friends of Maurice Ravel per- suaded him to set two Hebrew texts to music; of these, Kaddisch a piece of which Magdalena Koen says she is particularly fond uses an Aramaic text whose title means sacred or sanctification and is essentially a hymn in praise of God in the Jewish liturgy. Dating from 1977, Notre Pre is the last work that Maurice Durufl ever wrote and is consciously based on Renaissance models one of the characteristics of the French composers late, transfigured style. This wonder- ful piece also marks the chronological culmination of Magdalena Koens and Christian Schmitts traversal of three centuries of sacred songs and arias, a meditative journey that may well invite the listener to meditate in turn. Whether in the form of original compositions or arrangements, this unusual genre inspired the various composers to produce some of their most profoundly personal utterances. Oswald Beaujean Translation: Stewart Spencer Does a sacred song have to be written for a church ser- vice or can it also be used in an act of private worship? Magdalena Koen believes that it is impossible to draw a line between the religious and the personal. Everything is connected, everything is a part of our lives. Faith is something very personal. But, if we live on this planet, we must surely believe in a higher power, whatever that may be. That is something I feel when I perform this music. In the 19th century the sacred song migrated from the church to the middle-class living room and concert hall and was no longer reserved exclusively for liturgical use. But, even in the early 18th century, hymnals were specifically designed for use at public services on the organ and to encourage prayer at home, to quote from Georg Christian Schemellis Musicalisches Gesang- Buch, which was first published in Leipzig in 1736. This is the source of five of the songs by Johann Sebastian Bach that are featured in the present release and that are described on the volumes title-page as spiritual pieces. The preface attests to the Thomaskantors input: The melodies to be found in this musical song-book have been in part newly composed and in part improved in the thoroughbass by Johann Sebastian Bach. Schol- ars continue to argue over just how many of these 69 songs and arias Bach wrote and how many he improved by merely altering the melodic line and fig- ured bass of older pieces, but there is no doubt that he composed the wonderful Komm, ser Tod. And yet Magdalena Koen is quite right to describe even those songs that Bach himself may not have composed as very, very beautiful, top-ranking pieces. It is above all the songs of Franz Schubert that mark the definitive shift from church music to the music of private prayer and intimate religious drama. Even so, Magdalena Koen regards these art songs, too, as reli- gious music. Der Leidende, for example, takes as its subject matter the tension between the hopelessness of our captivity in this earthly vale of tears and the hope of heavenly redemption to come, a hope that Schubert leaves musically unfulfilled. Vom Mitleiden Mari is a free German paraphrase of the Latin Stabat Mater; in it the Mother of God laments her sons sufferings. For Magda- lena Koen, this strophic song, with the unyielding tread of its piano accompaniment, is written almost like a Bach chorale, which is highly unusual for a Schubert song. In Litanei auf das Fest Allerseelen Schuberts music picks up the devotional mood of the words, while Himmelsfunken is transformed into a pianissimo jewel, half hymn and half an emotional effusion typical of the German Romantics. Totengrbers Heimweh, finally, is an To encourage prayer Sacred Songs and Ari as 5 darber, weshalb wir hier sind und was nach dem Tod kommt. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. So Now, My Jesus, You Bid Us Good Night! August Pfeiffer So now, my Jesus, you bid us good night! Are you dying, then, my dearest life? Yes, you have gone, your sufferings are over. My God is dead, he has given up the ghost. Gone is the treasure that my soul loves; the man to whom Heaven bows down now lowers his head! He who gives life to me and to all the world is cast by death into the dark grave. August Pfeiffer So gibst du nun, mein Jesu, gute Nacht! So stirbst du denn, mein allerliebstes Leben? 12 On the Virgin Marys Compassion Friedrich Schlegel When Mary stood by the Cross, her heart felt anguish upon anguish and pain upon pain; the whole suffering of Christ was imprinted upon her heart. She had to stand by and see her son pale and dead, all red with wounds, suffering on the Cross. Think how much this bitter death must have cut her to the quick. In Christs head, through bone and brain, through eyes, ears and brow many sharp thorns transfixed him; the thorns broke her sons head and brain, and they broke her mothers heart. The Sleeping Christ-Child Songs on poems by Eduard Mrike no. 25 Son of the Virgin, child of Heaven! On the ground you have fallen asleep on the wood shavings of suffering that the devout master, in meaningful play, placed beneath your sweet dreams! O flower, still hidden within the dark bud and enclosing the majesty of the father! Oh, if only one could see the images painted in gentle succession behind this brow and behind these dark lashes! O Father, advise us! Turn hither and guide us! Lord, into your hands let all things be placed, both the beginning and the end! The Golden Sun Paul Gerhardt The golden sun, full of pleasure and joy, brings to our limitations with its radiance a delightful light that regales our hearts. My head and body were cast down, but now I can stand, sprightly and glad, and see Heaven with my own countenance. Sufferings and wretchedness come to an end. After the oceans boom and the winds roar, the suns longed-for countenance shines. The fullness of joy and blissful tranquillity I may await in the garden of Heaven, whither my thoughts are directed. Hail Mary, pray for us to God, pray for us. Prayer Songs on poems by Eduard Mrike no. 28 Lord, send what you will, be it pleasure or pain; I am content that both spring from your hands. But do not overwhelm me with joy, do not overwhelm me with suffering. Midway between them lies sweet moderation. The Sufferer anon. No more can I carry the burden of this pain; take the tired pilgrim soon to be with you. Ever, ever closer it gets in my bosom, ever, ever dimmer gets the look of eyes. No more can I carry the burden of this pain. Litany on All Souls Day Johann Georg Jacobi May all souls rest in peace, those whose anxious torment is over, those whose sweet dreams have ended, weary of life, scarcely born, they have departed this world: may all their souls rest in peace! The souls of young women in love, whose tears cannot be numbered, whom a faithless lover abandoned and a blind world spurned: all who have departed hence, may all their souls rest in peace! And those who never smiled on the sun but lay awake on thorns beneath the moon in order that they might one day see God face to face in Heavens pure light: all who have departed hence, may all their souls rest in peace! Pray, then, that it also welcomes their hearts here. He whom Gods spirit inspires and whom Gods word stirs and he who bears the first fruits of His grace, let him join in our song and praise Gods faith, which is new on this feast day and every morning.
