CHALLENGE
Te 8-3/8 hole section of wells in Abu Butabul feld spans diferent
formations with high variations in lithology, including carbonates,
compacted claystone, and very abrasive Siltstone and Sandstone. With
compressive rock strength that ranges from 15,000 to 35,000 PSI, the
resulting hardness and abrasiveness typically required the customer
to use several impregnated bits on a turbine motor in order to achieve
section TD.
Halliburton Drill Bits and Services was challenged to provide a PDC
bit solution that would achieve multiple planned objectives: replace
the impregnated bits and turbine with a long-lasting PDC that would
eliminate the trip time to surface for bit changes; and both extend
drilling depth per bit and achieve higher ROP.
SOLUTION
Halliburton Drill Bits and Services worked with the customer, using
the DatCI
SM
process to develop a cost-efective and reliable solution
using a MegaForce
TM
drill bit design run on a Rotary Packed Assembly.
Te resulting eight-bladed MM84DH featured an aggressive dual-row
cutting structure incorporating advanced 13mm - SelectCutter
TM
PDC
technology. Reinforcing the nose, shoulder, and gage, the dual-row
cutting structure helps extend bit life once the primary cutters become
worn or damaged, while the SelectCutter PDC technology combine
superior abrasion- and impact-resistance with greater thermal stability
to withstand friction heat generated during the drilling process and
limit heat build-up.
Te 8-3/8 MM84DH bit successfully drilled shoe to shoe, a total of
994.5 meters (3,263 f) in 121 hours, achieving an average ROP of 8.2
m/hr (27 f/hr), and setting a new record for the longest and fastest
interval in the feld.
VALUE CREATED
In this outstanding single run performance, the MM84DH MegaForce
drill bit from Halliburton Drill Bits and Services successfully achieved
all planned objectives, as well as drilling the longest and fastest section
in Abu Butabul feld reducing well construction time by 19.5 days.
