One of the hottest debates for a
number of years in Medford
Township has revolved around
bringing businesses into the
township.
Many residents disagree about
what type of businesses the town-
ship should attract and how
much of Medford's character
should be sacrificed to attract
new businesses.
During the summer, the plan-
ning board approved a series of
recommendations to change zon-
ing regulations in specific dis-
tricts, such as along Route 70, to
make them more business friend-
ly. Many of the zoning regula-
tions involved changes to buffers
and increasing the size of com-
mercial buildings.
The recommendations now go
to council, which can implement
any of the changes through ordi-
nances. Council is expected to dis-
cuss the recommendations this
fall.
Some residents are unsure if
any major businesses are needed
in Medford.
Ann Marie Demko has been a
Medford resident for 11 years. She
enjoys the serenity and peaceful-
ness of the township and is wor-
ried additional commercial devel-
opment may negatively impact
the area.
I work in Marlton, Demko
said. So I don't see the need for it.
I wouldn't want to have it turn
into another Marlton.
Demko said her commute to
Marlton allows her to travel to
many stores in between. She said
most major chains are just a
short distance away, and Medford
doesn't need to host another loca-
tion.
Jeanette Flamini sees both
sides of the argument. She under-
stands the township needs to in-
crease its tax ratables and be-
lieves development is possible if

The following information was
provided by the Medford Town-
ship Police Department.
On Sept. 21 at 1 p.m., Medford
Township Police responded to 665
Stokes Road at Medford Lanes for
a caller reporting that his vehicle
was just vandalized.
Upon arrival, contact
was made with three
males reporting dam-
age to their vehicles,
including a damaged
hood scoop and rims. While the
victims were explaining the inci-
dent, they stated that the suspects
were in a black Ford pickup truck
with a loud exhaust that just
passed northbound on Stokes
Road. The vehicle was stopped on
Dixontown Road near Timber
Green Court and the driver was
identified as a 24-year-old man
from Medford. Further investiga-
tion revealed that he and another
suspect, a 22-year-old man from
Southampton, had damaged the
vehicles at Medford Lanes. The
Southampton man was not with
the Medford man at the time of
the stop, but was subsequently lo-
cated. The Medford man was ar-
rested at the scene for driving
while intoxicated. As a result of
the investigation, both men were
charged with criminal mischief.
Both were released pending a
court date.
On Sept. 24 at 10:23 a.m., patrol
units responded to Bank Street
for a female reporting stolen jew-
elry. Upon arrival, contact was
made with the home-
owner who explained
that approximately 10
days ago, she noticed
one of her rings was
missing, and when she
checked her jewelry, she noticed
other items to be missing. The
owner stated that the house is left
secured and there were no signs
of forced entry. Further investiga-
tion revealed that her maid, a 37-
year-old woman from Riverside,
had taken the missing items to
Golden Jewelers in Cinnaminson.
At the completion of the police in-
vestigation, the maid was arrest-
ed and charged with theft for un-
lawfully taking six gold rings, a
gold bracelet, a gold chain and a
firefly necklace. She was later re-
leased pending a court appear-
ance.

Medford Township Council-
man Randy Pace has announced
he will resign from his seat on
Oct. 10.
However, he said he really does-
nt want to leave.
Its breaking my heart, Pace
said.
Pace is resigning his seat to
move with his family to Ten-
nessee after his wife was offered a
new job there.
Pace has left a huge mark on
Medford since he was elected to
council in 2011. He came into of-
fice with the township facing a $6
million budget deficit.
In 2012, residents approved a
referendum for a 25 percent in-
crease in municipal taxes to help
reduce the deficit.
Looking back on his tenure,
Pace credits
the communi-
ty for its deci-
sion to raise
taxes and help
begin Med-
fords finan-
cial turn-
around.
It wasnt
as much as
what I did as it
was what the community wanted
to do, he said. The community
made the most significant change
in electing new faces.
Prior to running for council,
Pace was a frequent attendee at
council meetings along with cur-
rent Mayor Chris Buoni and
Councilman Frank Czekay. Pace
frequently spoke during the pub-
lic comment portions of the meet-
ing throughout 2011. The trio was
elected to council after running
under a Medford First ticket.
The backing from residents is
what encouraged Pace to run for
council.
I had plenty of help and plen-
ty of support from the communi-
ty, he said. Not so much from
the political interest, but from the
community interest. Thats why I
got involved.
Buoni said Paces love for the
township was evident when he
spoke during meetings. Pace was
not afraid to speak out during
public comment prior to taking
office and gave his opinion on
many different topics when serv-
ing on council.
He had the dedication and the
steadfast commitment to finding
out what were the actual facts,
Buoni said.
Pace said he has observed a lot

Writer: Elect Tom MacArthur
as new congressman
The people of New Jersey's Third Con-
gressional District will elect a new con-
gressman. I recommend Tom MacArthur
not just because of his lifetime example of
being a successful businessman, but also
how he has chosen to live his personal and
public life.
The great upheavals in society we have
all experienced makes us yearn for more
normal times. We don't have to accept the
new normal if we don't want that to be
our future. But to get back to those better
days it will require reclaiming those things
that made us great.
Basic virtues of family, honesty, firm-
ness of purpose, faith, modesty, humility,
thrift and hard work are not the punch
lines for jokes but the basis for our past and
future successes.
Foundations rarely just collapse or sud-
denly fail. Such catastrophes are more
often the result of abandoning the tried
and true things that worked. Instead a slow
rot reaches the point where the foundation
cannot hold up the weight of the structure.
America is a grand edifice but we must
tend to its foundations.
If we are honest with ourselves, the rea-
son that things are not what they used to be
is because we have all stopped being who
we need to be. That means all of us doing
the right things at the right time. There is
no great mystery what those things are,
and deep down inside we all know what
must be done. Yes, sometimes it's hard and
difficult but as individuals and a society we
must show personal and collective disci-
pline to be impeccable.
We must resolve to awaken ourselves to
reform and reclaim our rich heritage. That
must begin with selecting good and proven
leaders to guide us, and for that reason I
ask you to elect Tom MacArthur as a first
step toward that renewal.

T
he topic of campaign funding
rears its ugly head about this
time every year. While its an
issue that is associated with bigger-
budget elections such as for Congress,
governor and president, its not some-
thing that passes by local elections.
And thats a shame a real shame.
Elections at every level should be
about whos right for the job, not who
can raise, and spend, the most money.
Campaign funding reform has been
discussed, and implemented, time and
again, but its not an easy thing to con-
trol. There are plenty of loopholes,
and it can be hard to track.
At the local level, though, it should
be easier and it should be regulated.
Last year, one local municipality
passed a pay-to-play ordinance that we
believe every town in New Jersey
should adopt.
Moorestown originally passed an or-
dinance to align its campaign contri-
bution limits to that of the state
$2,600 for professional business enti-
ties and $7,200 for political action com-
mittees. Residents complained,
though, and for good reason. Those
numbers were a substantial increase
from the towns original limits of $300
and $500, respectively.
After signatures were gathered op-
posing the change, Moorestown re-
versed the ordinance and returned its
contribution limits to the lower levels.
It was a good move, and one that we
encourage other towns to make, if
they havent already.
Were all for pay-to-play ordinances
that protect local towns from being
run by outside influences such as cor-
porations or other political entities.
Local politics, more so than any other
form of government, should be about
the residents of the town.
Local elections should be about the
candidates involved and what they
will do for the town and its residents.
Period. It shouldnt be about what
businesses want to see or political
machines want to see. Its about the
people.
We encourage all local councils,
commissions and committees in New
Jersey to pass regulations on contribu-
tion limits, if such regulations arent
already on the books.
Its election season, and as we watch
debates and read about issues from
candidates at the state level and hear
of even more trouble at the federal
level its hard not to lose confidence
in the honesty and integrity of politics
today.
But local elections and local politics
dont have to be that way, as long as we
control it.
in our opinion
Under our control
Local elections dont have to get out of hand
Your thoughts
Do you think municipalities should have
strict pay-to-play ordinances? Or do you
think local politics can govern itself?

of change over the past three
years in the township. A reduc-
tion in municipal services caused
a number of organizations to step
up and take care of recreational
facilities, festivals, parades and
other events.
I think because of where we
were at financially and because
there wasnt enough money to do
it anymore, the public picked up
that slack on their own, Pace
said.
Pace originally moved to Med-
ford in 2003 after retiring from the
Navy. He said the togetherness of
the community really spoke to
him from the beginning. He is
proud of how the community
came together to stay strong dur-
ing the hard times. He said the
township has been able to main-
tain many of its traditional
events, such as the Dickens Festi-
val and the Fourth of July fire-
works, without funding from the
municipality.
People have banded together
to get those things done, despite
the government, he said. (Ill
miss) the community involve-
ment, people coming together for
common interests.
Since Pace is resigning less
than a month before Election Day,
the council will appoint a new
councilperson to fill the remain-
der of his unexpired term. Buoni
said the Republican committee
will send three nominations to
council for consideration.
Well get through the process
in public, Buoni said. These
nominees are representatives for
the people.

Motorists in New Jersey and
throughout the nation are asked
to join a day-long effort on Oct. 10,
designed to increase awareness
about safe driving behaviors and
keep the roadways fatality free for
one day.
Known as Put the Brakes on
Fatalities Day, the national initia-
tive was designed to unite the
country in moving toward zero fa-
talities for one full day by encour-
aging motorists to obey all traffic
laws, including buckling up, driv-
ing the posted speed limit, avoid-
ing distractions while driving
and always being safe and sober
behind the wheel. The goal is to
experience a day when all road-
way users are extra vigilant and
there are no fatalities.
To support this effort, the Med-
ford Township Police Department
will be utilizing traffic enforce-
ment and social media to educate
the public on safe driving habits.
Last year in New Jersey, 542 indi-
viduals lost their lives in motor
vehicle-related crashes, down
from 589 in 2012. The decline con-
tinues a downward trend in
motor vehicle fatalities, and in
2013 the lowest number of motor
vehicle-related deaths in the state
was recored since the 1940s.

It has its ups and downs, she
said.
Flamini believes major chains
could successfully move into
Medford. While some residents
are able to easily access sur-
rounding towns such as Evesham
and Mt. Laurel, she believes more
stores would be a benefit to people
living east of Medford.
When you look at Southamp-
ton and Tabernacle, they don't
have anywhere in the area, she
said.
While the addition of new busi-
nesses has been part of the dis-
cussion, the planning board re-
cently approved a redevelopment
plan for the Village at Taunton
Forge, a shopping center located
at the corner of Taunton Boule-
vard and Tuckerton Road.
The plan has the shopping cen-
ter being expanded and two
smaller buildings being added to
the property. The plan also in-
cludes the clearing of some of the
surrounding trees partially hid-
ing the shopping center from
Tuckerton Road.
Some residents, such as Jerry
Gray, have spoken out against the
changes to the shopping center.
Gray feels the shopping center
should do a better job of fitting
into the surrounding residential
areas.
I shopped at the shopping cen-
ter for almost 25 years exclusive-
ly, he said. To be truthful, if
they would leave the trees and get
rid of the two pad sites, I don't
care what they do inside the shop-
ping center.
Flamini lives near the shop-
ping center and expressed con-
cern about losing some of the
trees.
I don't think it'll look nice,
she said. With proper advertis-
ing, you don't need to take the
trees down.
Demko said the area should
continue to reflect the wooded
residential areas. She wasn't
pleased when she heard about the
changes in store.
I'd like to not see them take
down the trees, she said.

fire in the circular drive of BCIT
approximately 20 feet from the
building. The juvenile driver of
the vehicle parked and exited the
vehicle prior to the vehicle ignit-
ing. Medford Fire Department ar-
rived on location and extin-
guished the fire before any dam-
age to the school building could
occur. The students and faculty
were evacuated and left the loca-
tion at normal dismissal time. No
injuries were reported from the
incident.
Cause of the fire is still under
investigation, but believed to be
accidental due to a mechanical
issue.
On Sept. 29 at 12:15 p.m., Med-
ford Township Police, Fire and
EMS were dispatched to the Med-
ford Leas Retirement Community,
near the main office, for a motor
vehicle crash with an uncon-
scious driver. Upon arriving, po-
lice discovered a silver Subaru
Forrester that had collided head-
on into a tree. The driver, a 94-
year-old Medford man, was found
to be unconscious in the vehicle.
He was removed from the vehicle
and transported by Medford EMS
ambulance to Virtua Hospital in
Mount Holly where he died from
internal injuries a short time
after arrival. A preliminary crash
investigation revealed that there
was an initial minor collision
with a white Toyota Camry, oper-
ated by an 88-year-old Medford
woman, in the parking lot. The
mans vehicle then left the road-
way, striking a light post, and ulti-
mately colliding head-on into a
tree. The crash investigation is
ongoing at this time. Witnesses to
the crash can contact Medford
Township Police at (609) 654-7511,
ext. 662.
