Variable Mainscan Resolution

Definitions
Lenticular printing: A printed image that shows depth or motion as the viewing
angle changes. In general, lenticular is a term for the lens effect that creates a convex
perspective of multiple images or light sources, but not necessarily a physical printed
image. This lenticular technology can be used to create a lenticular image through the
process of lenticular printing. In order to print lenticular the file has to be rendered in
away that will fit the lenticular lens and the application type 3D / flip.
Around drum =Mainscan =Y
Along drum =Subscan =X
Variable mainscan resolution: A required option to enable lenticular printing.
The Variable mainscan resolution (VMR) option adjusts the pixel resolution in the
mainscan (around-the-drum) direction to align the pixel boundaries to the frequency
of the Lenticular lens boundaries. With the VMR option, you can set the following to
ensure the pixel frequency of the image is an exact multiple of the lens frequency:
Image in the main-scan (around the drum) at resolution from 1200 up to 5080 dpi
(depends on the device resolution: 2400: 1200-4800; 2540: 1270-5080)
Note: this resolution is entered in the Render tab of the Prinergy/Prinergy Evo
template, and must be an integer no.
In addition, you can adjust the mainscan resolution by increasing or decreasing
up to 3.2% to the main scan resolution (so minimum will be 1200 3.2%;
maximum will be 5080 +3.2%)
Note: this scale factor is entering in the Device tab of the Prinergy/Prinergy Evo
tab and can be a non-integer no.
The VMR option supports all AM screens.
In staccato only with 2400x2400 dpi +/- 3.2% (because Staccato does not
support asymmetric resolution)

Requirements

Magnus 800/Lotem 800 Quantum
The VMR option is protected by a dongle in the Magnus 800/Lotem 800 Quantum
The VMR option is supported in Magnus 800 version 4.04 VMR or higher
The VMR option is supported in Lotem 800 Quantum version 3.82.12 or higher

Prinergy/Prinergy Evo/Prinergy
Prinergy version 3.1.0.3 or higher (Using Xpo version 3.1.46 or higher)
Prinergy Evo version: 3.1.6.6 or higher (Using Xpo version 3.1.46 or higher)

File formats
The VMR option supports all separations
From Prinergy/Prinergy Evo: PDF or imposition job (GDAPI workflow)
1-bit TIFF files can be send only through Evo TIFF downloader

Limitations

Platesetter
The imaging speed of the output device may be reduced by up to 50% (depending on
file resolution) when the VMR option is in use
the interlaced image strips (or lenticular lens) must run along the drum, see image:

Xpo
TIFF files can be expose only via Evo TIFF downloader, and not directly via Xpo
If changing the VMR dongle in the platesetter you must update Xpo: go to the
Production Manager >click the: Refresh Plate Settings:
If submitting 1-bit TIFF files through Prinergy Evo TIFF downloader, the Xpo File
Information displays wrong orientation icons (around along drum):
In this example:
21.653, 5079 dpi will be exposed around drum
25.591, 2540 dpi will be exposed along drum

Prinergy Evo
In Evo Process Template Render tab you technically can type a non-integer
number in the device resolution field (Render tab) but this job will fail in the
platesetter.
When sending job in illegal resolution (resolution that is out of range, for example:
5080 dpi to 2400 platesetter), the following message appears in the Prinergy Evo:
" An error occurred queuing the session to the device control software" . This
message is not clear.
Evo TIFF downloader: Create a template: Device tab >select: Enable Variable
Mainscan imaging >Image at: enter resolution no. (For example: 2621) >Save >
Open the template again >Check the option: image at rendered resolution >Save.
Template actually saves the value 2621.

Workflow
Note: When creating the process template Xpo must be up and running.
Note: in this doc the description and the screenshots are for Prinergy Evo, but working with
Prinergy (GDAPI workflow) is the same.

Prinergy Evo VMR: +/- 3.2%
Create a new process template:
Open the Process Template Editor: File >New Output from PDF Template (output from
imposition is the same, example here shows PDF)
Output to: printing-to-device
Layout tab select the required plate
Render tab select or edit the device resolution (for example 2540x2540 dpi):

Calibration and Screening select the required screen set parameters
Device tab check the option: Enable Variable Mainscan Imaging >Image at >
type a resolution number, for example: 2621 dpi
Note: This number must be in the range between 2540-3.2% to 2540+3.2%

Save the Process Template: File Save As
While submitting a PDF on this template it will be exposed in:
2540 dpi along the drum
2621 dpi around the drum

Prinergy Evo VMR: asymmetrical integer resolution
Create a new process template:
Open the Process Template Editor: File >New Output from PDF Template (output from
imposition is the same, example here shows PDF)
Output to: printing-to-device
Layout tab select the required plate
Render tab in the Device Resolution manually type the required resolution, for
example: 2540x3200.
2540 dpi will be displayed as the X resolution
3200 dpi will be displayed as the Y resolution

Calibration and Screening select the required screen set parameters
Device tab check the option: Enable Variable Mainscan Imaging >check the
option: image at rendered resolution

Save the Process Template: File Save As
While submitting a PDF on this template it will be exposed in:
2540 dpi along the drum
3200 dpi around the drum

Prinergy Evo VMR: asymmetrical integer resolution + adjustment of +\- 3.2 %
Create a new process template:
Open the Process Template Editor: File >New Output from PDF Template (output from
imposition is the same, example here shows PDF)
Output to: printing-to-device
Layout tab select the required plate
Render tab in the Device Resolution type the required resolution,
for example: 2540 x 3200.
2540 dpi will be displayed as the X resolution
3200 dpi - will be displayed as the Y resolution

Calibration and Screening select the required screen set parameters
Device tab check the option: Enable Variable Mainscan Imaging >check the option
