Homework 1
I.
1. The description loosely follows the structure described in the outlines. The
introduction clearly defines the intended material as a technical definition
and then continues to explain the purpose and appearance of the material. It
may not follow the outline directly but it is close enough to understand.
2. The intended audience is engineers or students learning more about pumps.
The knowledge needed beforehand is knowledge from any physics class and
maybe some fluids class.
3. A. classification: rotodynamic type
differentiation: a dynamic pressure is developed which enables the lifting
of liquids from a lower to a higher level.
The definition is adequate because it tells classifies what type it is and then
further explains the differentiation within the class type.
B. classification: shrouded, semi-open, open
differentiation: vanes are provided with metal cover plates or shrouds on
both sides.
The definition is not adequate because it describes the pieces of the
impeller rather than tell us the class and differentiation within the class.
However, it does tell us the different classes of impellers and the differences
between each class.
C. classification: open
differentiation: vanes have neither the crown plate nor the base plate.
The definition is adequate because it tells us the type of impeller and then
continues to tell us the difference between the open impeller and the other
types of impeller.
D. classification: the operation in which the suction pipe, casing of the pump
and the portion of the delivery pipe upto the delivery valve
are completely filled with the liquid
differentiation: all the air from this portion of the pump is driven out and
no air pocket is left.
The definition is adequate enough to understand what the class is and
what differentiates this operation with any other operations.
4. The author differentiates the pumps by describing the different parts of the
pump and the functions of each different pump.
5. Figure 24.1 is adequately labeled and placed under the figure itself. It is used
correctly within the text to further describe the components of the pump.
Making the figure and number bolded would make the captions a lot cleaner.
6. Making the differences stand out within the text would be a better and
cleaner way to present the advantages.
7. It would be better to present the advantages for both over the other to show
when each pump is recommended to be used. However, if the author knew
that centrifugal pumps were a lot better than reciprocating pumps, then it is
best to only write the advantages for the centrifugal pumps.
8. This section is harder to read compared to the other sections because of the
long run-on sentences. If the sentences were broken up and explained one
at a time, then it would be a lot easier. It would also be a lot easier if the
physical phenomenon were explained first then the scientific explanation
explained later. Having both explanations at the same time is difficult to
follow along.

1. Our team was assigned a task of constructing a device that uses only solar
energy to heat water. In our report, we display the final solutions to our
design. We required the device to store and heat up to 250mL of water. The
device must also be cheap enough that one can use household items and no
more than $10 to construct this device. While testing of this prototype is not
yet complete, we can confirm that our requirements were met. With further
testing and calculations, our design managed to increase in temperature over
a decent amount of time.
2. The design for the solar water heater was designed to use solar radiation.
The lens within the device concentrates the sunlight which then heats up the
water. The glass prevents major heat loss from radiation, convection, and
evaporation. The device can be constructed with no more than $10 and with
household items. Through analysis, the device can heat up 250mL of water
by 27 degrees within 2 hours. The prototype has not been completed, but the
calculations provide us with the results.
3. 1. There must be a figure number and description underneath the figure
itself. (pg. 5- reference design)
2. Graphs must be large enough to read. (pg. 6- Fig. 4)
3. All variables must be defined before the equation. (pg. 6)
4. Material must not interrupt the flow of ideas in the report body (pg. 5-6)
5. The appendix must be labeled and must have their own sections (pg. 9)
