Ayurveda and mental illness
Very curious as to the ayurvedic resources one would use in curing mental illness - ie: bipolar disorder, major depression, etc. I have found
almost no information on the subject, let alone remedies that one would use.
Most curious and looking forward to some discussion.

Namaste c.smith,
First let me say I am not qualified to answer your question. I am just one more person on this earth that has been using this science for
some time. I am more comfortable with nutrition and balancing ones constitution, then that of mental-dis-orders.
We know this Ayurved has 8 limbs listed below:
Internal medicine - Kayachikitsa
Surgery - Shalya Tantra

Ears, eyes, nose and throat - Shalakya tantra
Pediatrics - Kaumarabhritya Tantra
Toxicology - Agada Tantra
Purification of the genetic organs - Bajikarana (or Vajikarana) Tantra
Health and Longevity - Rasayana Tantra
Psychiatry - Bhuta Vidya ( some also suggest spiritual healing)
The area you are suggesting is psychiatry as you have mentioned. From a dosha! or body type, various dis-eases may arise:
Vata imbalance: fear, anxiety, unrest, rapid mood shifts; insanity, schizophrenia
Pitta imbalance: blame others; anger, aggression, ambition, see enemies everywhere, on guard ready for a fight, at
war with oneself and one's past.
Kapha imblance: excess sleep, day sleep, day dream, attached to past, dull and lethargic, low drive/motivation,
dependent, childish desire to be cared for.
These imbalances can go from slight-to-severe. that is, who does not at times have some fear, or anxiety e.g. a interview, college test, a
new position. Yet when it is sustained, then the dis-ease takes hold and the causes are rooted in the dosha imbalances that have become
deeply seated in the native's constitution.
When it comes to these imbalances of the mind, seeking a good/experienced Auyurvedic practitioner is well advised.
pranams,

Namaste c.smith-ji
I too am not a specialist of Ayurveda. However, i also practice Ayurveda and if you can find out what your dosha "type" is, it would be easier
to give you some suggestions (based on things i've learned from a book i have studied by Vasant Lad, B.A.M.S., M.A.Sc.).
