Five things we learnt from United 2-1 Everton
October 5, 2014 47 Comments
Manchester United made it back-to-back wins in the Premier League for the first time this season to catapult
themselves into the top four for the first time in 14 months with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Everton at Old Trafford
on Sunday. Following the medias overreaction to an admittedly under par first five games, United and their plethora of
impressive summer acquisitions have begun to show the potential this new look side has in abundance.
The Toffees may have started the season poorly themselves, sitting in a lowly 17
th
position in the Premier League and
coming off the back of a lengthy trip to Russia to face Kuban Krasnodar in the Europa League on Thursday night, but
the match was most definitely Louis Van Gaals biggest test as United boss to date. The Dutchman passed it with
flying colours, making two enforced changes to the line-up against West Ham last week, with Antonio Valencia and
Juan Mata replacing the injured Ander Herrera and the suspended Wayne Rooney respectively.
The Spaniards inclusion in particular paid dividends as he set up record signing Angel Di Maria for a superb curling
opener. After Steven Naismiths header drew Everton level, the former Real Madrid midfielder then turned provider as
his miss-hit shot found Radamel Falcao in the area, who poked home his first for United to move the Red Devils into
the Champions League places.
Here are five things we learnt from Sundays victory.
1. David De Gea has world class potential

Last seasons player of the year was the star of the show as he made several unbelievable saves to preserve Uniteds
lead, including brilliantly denying Leighton Baines from the penalty spot just before the break. Incidentally, he is now
the only goalkeeper in to stop a Baines penalty in the Premier League. De Gea has received some unjust criticism from
some quarters at the beginning of the season for his lack of saves in the first six games but the Spaniard showed that he
has incredible, world class potential here.
Not many keepers in the world can match the 23-year-olds fantastic reaction time when a shot flies in his direction.
His reflex saves from Leon Osman and Bryan Oviedo shots late on proved that United have a reliable keeper who is
capable of winning them points in crucial games such as this one. The two points which he saved for the Red Devils
could be so valuable come the end of the season.
2. Falcao is a predator and a match-winner
Falcaos celebration following his match-winning strike said it all. He is so happy to be at United and is determined to
make his stint at the club a success. You could see the sheer relief as he poked home Di Marias off target shot to
restore Uniteds lead. Now the Colombian has got that all important first goal for the club, you get the feeling that the
goals will now start flowing and Falcao will play with more freedom, letting his instinct take over.
Van Gaal said it himself; Falcao was trying too hard to get that first goal. He is a predator in front of goal whose
instinct for a goal cannot be matched. Since moving to Europe, he averages more than a goal a game. He is one of, if
not the most rounded striker on the planet and United will surely reap the rewards for securing his signature in the
coming months.

3. United still need key defenders to return
Although it was a pleasing victory for United, the defensive frailties and inability to keep the opposition at bay for 90
minutes reared their ugly head once more. Paddy McNair has had a stellar first couple of games for the club but it is
vital that key and more experienced defenders such as Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling return from injury
during the international break.
United were unable to keep a clean sheet once again as Naismith instinctively nodded in Evertons equaliser. There
was far too much space for the Scot to sneak into the six yard box and head past De Gea, further proving that Unteds
defence is in desperate need of a leader. A pairing of Jones and the passionate Marcos Rojo looks like it could be the
way forward once the Englishmans hamstring recovers. Either way, Van Gaal needs to settle on a regular pairing when
his injuries return.
4. Three wins in a row at home, the return of fortress Old Trafford?
The victory means it is now three wins in a row at Old Trafford for United. Just like old times. This never happened
under Van Gaals predecessor David Moyes and it is a statistic which will please the 63-year-old as he made it one of
his primary aims when he took the job to restore the fear factor that has gone missing at the Theatre of Dreams.
Following a patched up United side opened the campaign with a defeat to Swansea, the new look United have beaten
QPR, West Ham and now Everton. Next up at Old Trafford is league leaders Chelsea and if United could pick up a
result against Jose Mourinhos side, that would send out a massive statement. Fortress Old Trafford would be well and
truly back.
5. United impressive without captain Rooney
Rooneys moment of madness against West Ham last week may have been a blessing in disguise for Van Gaal. The
Dutchman was able to see his side in action without Rooney without needing an excuse to drop him. He saw his re-
built United team play impressively without their new captain with Mata taking Rooneys place behind Robin Van
Persie and Falcao. I have seen the term un-droppable being used to describe Rooney at the start of the season but
there is not a chance that this should be the case.
The captain is an important player for United but the sheer volume of attacking talent at the club means that his place in
the team should by no means be a guarantee. Mata is arguably a better no.10 than Rooney whilst Van Persie and Falcao
are more prolific strikers. It is likely he will return to the side following his suspension but the performance in the
Everton win means Rooney must up his game when he returns as it showed there are alternative options for Van Gaal
to mull over.

> correct: David De Gea IS world class, top three goalkeepers in the world actually.

Hugo Hemingway says:
1) Totally agree, De Gea IS world class using potential is un-necessary.
2)In the press Falcao has had some unfair comments about not scoring yet, even though he already has some
assists (and some delightful chances like hitting the crossbar in the last game). really hope he progresses from
here (which he should of course) and goes on a run.
3)Yes Utd need a leader at the back, but imo the best option is actually to try and get a consistant back four and
unfortunately with Smalling /Jones / Evans that just doesnt look like thats ever going to happen with all of them
being consistently injured after being back for a few weeks. Utd are desperate for a strong /fit centre half that can
lead the defence.

4)WAYYYYYYYY too soon to even think about Fortress OT, nice thought but not even close yet (despite
winning three back to back there). Chelsea are going to tear our defence a new one (who ever we field) and my
call would be to keep Rojo and McNair at the back for consistency but pair Blind with Jones as DMs (and
sacrifice RvP or Mata)
5) Mata was actually quite invisible today despite the lovely assist for the first goal. Especially when Utd needed
to keep hold of the ball in the last 10-15 minutes this is where Utd REALLY miss Rooney. Yes WR was at fault
for his defensive header a week or two ago, but in general he is a much better player all over the pitch compared
to Mata.

Unfortunately for me, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans are no longer in the class of experienced..They have
learnt nothing..and to be honest our defence has looked much more stable with them out of the team.Lets see
things as they are..People kept saying we should have kept Rio for one more year because of experience..his
experience without the pace and fitness is meaningless.McNair has looked much more assured in the defence
than those two rolled in one.Smalling always panics with the ball even when not under pressure.See how McNair
handled Lukakku..see how composed Blackett is..Those two have learnt more in a short while than Smalling has
in two seasons..Smallings defending is always described as woeful and shocking and for anyone to think that
will change soon because of experience is wrong.Anytime he is in the squad our defence looks so shaky
because they are so shocking that even the youth team players can do a better job than they are..same goes with
Cleverley..who yet again offered nothing to the Aston Villa team yesterday..All the midfielders except him were
involved in the attack trying to make something happen, while he was content with his usual sideways
passes..hardly looked to give one through pass..I hope VanGall will select his defenders based on performance
and not so called experienced because to be be honest Smalling and Evans have learnt nothing and will bring our
defence back to woeful should they be selected..RVP is currently playing on the experienced card and this will
hurt the team one day..He should be dropped if he doesnt performThe squad is still finding its feet and LVG
should keep his word that no one is guaranteed a starting spot except his captain..
Fellaini..another woeful player who has shown once again that he cannot and will never be a holding
midfielder..Did anyone notice how he messed up our organization when he came on?..Its like he didnt know his
role.Just getting into his own players spaces..We could have easily lost this game because players like Fellaini
cannot help us see out games. As soon as he came on we lost control of the midfieldHope he is sold soon..Lets
not kid ourselves and hope and he will get better because of LVG..He is not a United type of player ..like
Cleverley,Young, and the rest..If we need players who will do a job maye we should dig deeper into the
academy..more players like Pearson and Harrop need debuts..players like Fellaini just waste space on the
bench..If this was his performance as a sub then imagine what we will have to endure when he starts..wait..we
did endure it last season under Moyes..He was at fault for alot of goals last season for failing to track his man..He
just is not cut it to be a defensive midfielder.

also in one way it was quite lucky Rooney was not allowed to play today, imo he rarely plays his best against his
former team.
Utd will miss him massively against Chelsea undoubtedly and its a question as to which West Brom turn up at
home two weeks on Monday (and to a lesser extent whos fit for Utd) as to whether we miss our new captain in
that game.

@BenjieTee Ben Pearson will definitely get his chance, you can be sure of that. Josh Harrop isnt far behind, just
needs to add a little physicality to his game and hell be right there too.
While I know there are a lot of United fans who will be glad to see the back of the likes of
Fellaini/Young/Anderson we also have to excercise a certain degree of patience. Some of these players arent a

lost cause indeed Ashley Young was arguably our best player in preseason predominantly playing wing-back.
Fellaini could still silence all his critics if hes able to adapt to LVGs philosophy. Physically, he cuts an
imposing figure so if technically and mentally he can string all the pieces together theres still a chance he could
do a job for us. And not just as a last-10-minutes beanpole target man.
I dont think even by the end of this season, what with all the injuries, well know what our best 11 is. I think
what is clear however, is that the transformation isnt yet complete. Whether it is players from the U21s or more
huge signings which fill the gaps, time will tell. Either way, exciting times innit.

Redfrog says:
@Mike Fibes. Fellaini will never do it at United. Van Gaal loves mobility in midfield, something Fellaini cannot
provide as do Di Maria, Herrera or Valencia. He does not have the brain to play in Blinds position either. Where
do you want to play him ? Number 10 ? Well even if we were not packed in that position with Rooney, Mata,
Januzaj, Fellaini cannot play 10 at United, or maybe only if we get in sundays league football.
Ive nothing against the guy, he is just not good enough, even on the bench. He doesnt suit our style, as simple
as that !

I dont know why? But every article on this site is literally anti Rooney, despite of the fact that he has score
assisted and defended as well.I am so glad that LVG is of sane mind and keeps playing him..I guess admin
has an agenda against him.

Im not good at analyzing technical aspects of the game. All I can say is that Im going to sleep a lot better this
week. We hate Nottingham Forest
9. October 5, 2014 at 22:35
BenjieTee says:
@Mike Fibes..I agree with you on the patience issues..but how long did we have to endure with Cleverley..you
cant really transform inconsistent players as it has been with them. Fellaini, Anderson, Young, Hernandez,
Welbeck all classed as inconsistent and that is why most fans wanted them out or were not worried with them
leaving. all players who have left the club are players we could do without..Fellaini is one of themBefore you
give paitence to a player you have to ask what he really brings to the table..What did Cleverley actually
bring..sideways,backward passes..no assist..no attempt to give a through pass..so..with Fellaini as a holding
midfielder what does he bring to the team.lack of technical ability, slow pace, lack of urgency, fouling
opponents..we saw it all last seasonMcNairs first game already showed promise, Blacketts first game showed
promise.Blinds first game showed promise,so did Herrera and Di Maria..but compare that to Fellainis and you
realise he just cant play in that holding roleIt was clear after the Sunderland defeat as to those who would
adapt to LVGs philosophy..and Fellaini is one of those who dont fit, just like Cleverley.Young will come back
to the team and still not take on a man, pass the ball back and waste possession..EPL is having players who can
play under pressure.Young was seen for the player he is in our first gameour players were given far too much
space in preseason..Our defence looked solid in preseason but suddenly shocking in the EPL..We then woke up
to the truth that the preseason counted for nothing and everything counted for nothingthe usual suspects were
back..Young, a hero in preseason suddenly turned crap in EPL first game.Wasnt that the Young we knew for the
past two seasons?..Same issue with Nani..we all wished and hoped he had something to offer..but his
inconsistencies we just too much that eventually we got rid of him..and guess what?..for all his creativity we
dont even miss him because he was more of a problem than a solutionHow much patience had we given to
Nani..even now some hope he would find his form, but we cant carry anymore passengers..Your ability
determines how fast you adapt to the philosophy..Thats why those who couldnt even though promising were
shipped off.

RedOne says:
Amazing Dave saves the day! If he had reflex glitches at Leicester, I think he was just the opposite today. Those
two saves were just out of this world. It`s rare ability that he has and he still has eons ahead of him. And to deny
Baines from a spotFantastic!!! Without doubt MoM. I just hope he has more days like this and less days like at
king power ground.
Generaly I think we did very well to supress Everton`s general play but we run out of breath too early, in like 70
min. Then we had some problems at midfield and the back. Blind`s yellow hadn`t helped either. RVP, Di Maria,
Paddy, Mata, Blind all looked exhausted towards the end. Only Rafa and Rojo fit enough. I again question these
triple sessions but am sure LVG is not forcing prehistoric methods on them like Moyesy did.
Mata improved his defensive play a little but still far from what`s required. He also needs to build his fitness. As
the things stands he can do his best for 50 min then he becomes more of liability than blessing. Certainly don`t
agree with statement that Mata is best choice for #10 in this tactical layout. He is better option when a team is
playing with 1 striker and 2 wingers but no way in a diamond 4-4-2 or 4-3-1-2 where he needs to track back
more.
Also pleased to finally see Falcao score. His moral and ability will be cruical in the upcoming weeks. Di Maria
was also great today until he lost his breath towards the end. 3 goals and 3 assist in 5 games is not bad at all. And
his performance on the pitch shows just why we broke the transfer record.
If we win a game at hawthorns after the internationals, we`ll be in a great position to meet rent boys the week
after. Really tough fixtures ahead so it`s now or never to make an attempt for top spot. Good to see youngsters
having minutes on the pitch which makes me sad that we got out of the league cup so early.
Overall, I see a bright future aheadwe just need to keep grinding results. With a man down, with top class
keeper performance, possible blitzkrieg like against QPR.just keep picking up the shattered pieces off the
ground left by the other, not so amazing Dave.

Mike Fibes says:
I just think everybody will have to give it more than this season. If LVG had done a wholesale clearout wed be
in a catastrophic mess right now. It was more important to transition carefully if thats with the likes of Young
and Fellaini as squad players, even for the time being, then so be it.
The other thing is with the calling for more U21 players to be brought in Im sure many will get a chance but
weve been pretty spoiled by the number of introductions this season already. Id expect this to slow down as
more experienced players come back to full fitness. The likes of Janko and Pearson might have to wait until the
end of the season.
I dont stand for this criticism of players purely from their performances under Moyes. Lets see what LVG can
do with them. Fellainis been injured for all of the season so far. Im sure if he was that lost a cause he wouldnt
be anywhere near that first team squad, so lets just wait and see. I dont think hes as bad as a lot of United fans
want him to be. I think a lot of United fans see Fellaini as a hangover from last season, an uncomfortable
reminder of Uniteds impotency in that period. I see a Belgian international midfielder yet to fully fulfill a
reasonable amount of initial promise.

Redfrog says:
@Mike, sorry but from day one I did not think Fellaini was good enough for us, purely because of his style. Im
so happy we got Herrera who was too expensive for Moyes and apparently not tested. Well, we can see the one
who is starting.
Fellaini in the team means nothing IMO, Van Gaal had not a lot of options right now with injuries. I will be
suprised if he starts a game if everyone fit. He was linked with Napoli before he gets injured.

samuel - united WE stand says:
Fellaini is not good enough.. no matter how much more time you dish to him.. he is an experienced footballer
who is pretty much at his prime and should be playing his best football with little excuse.. he is the same age
bracket as nemanja matic.. it is not about moyes buying him or any kind of hang-over.. even at everton, it was
clear he lacked the attributes for the highest level and a clear panic buy by a manager who had no idea about the
required level of players needed to maintain high standards. Fellaini is a decent footballer but he belongs at a
certain level. As for young being brilliant in pre-season, you will find that most, if not all teams work their way
back to fitness,, the real level of player is exposed when the real season starts.. i had no doubt young was going
to be found out.. another player that should have been shipped out a long time ago.. as Ive always said, these
players are taking the squad places of younger players with more potential they are not going to contribute to
the progress of manchester united.
14. October 6, 2014 at 00:16
BenjieTee says:
Youve said it all SamuelThose players are wasting space and development of potential youngsters all in the
name of lets give them time to a adapt to LVGs philosophy..These players are in their prime and they have
shown us nothing to show they can improve. The current starting lineup consists of players who are all good with
the ball on their feet..It just takes one bad player to ruin the setup of a good team. Its funny our defence is not
being talked about too much of late..To be honest much of our woeful defending came as a result of having either
Smalling or Evans playing together.LVG should have taken note of the woefulness.and keep them on the bench.
15. October 6, 2014 at 00:17
united till i die says:
Dont know about everyone else but I wasnt impressed with Mata at all today. Rooney will walk back into the
team against City based on Matas performance. Not saying he was totally horrible today just that he never stood
out at all.
16. October 6, 2014 at 00:19
Marq says:
Actually I thought Mata was largely anonymous. Many times it seems he drifted to far forward to be almost in
line with Rvp & Falcao. He needs to drop a bit deeper to link up with Blind.
Also, we need Herrera back for Chelsea. Against Everton, you could see that in the second half when they closed
in on Blind and we started to struggle to make headway. Valencia offered nothing except being a nuisance and
running cover, no forward play at all. Blind was the one running the show, especially in the first half.
At the back, its still painfully obvious we need a leader and someone strong in the challenges. When was the last
time you saw one of our central defenders rising up to head a cross away emphatically?
17. October 6, 2014 at 00:22
Mr Ree says:
De Gea proved his worth when he was named in the PFA team of the season a year after being torn to shreds in
his first year mostly not by United fans. Thats quite the achievement in this ABU world we live in.
Di Maria has trademarked the scuffed shot assist like Van Persie invented the diving lobbed header. I love
Matas enthusiasm in trying to score like the strikers lol.
Van Gaal could play Falcao alone up front and hell probably score all day long but we hunt in packs. Predators
of all shapes and sizes from all corners of the safari to scare all the hyenas, not just one jungle book tiger.
Ideally theyll all play but against Chelsea well be missing our raging bull in Rooney so we can sharpen our
claws against the likes of West Brom before. By then well have our wise old talking ape in Michael Carrick
back.

samuel - united WE stand says:
Another hard fought win.. a lot of shaky moments but the positive is united are able to get over the line.. albeit
limping those points of which you do not entirely play brilliantly is what lifts the team, it builds a winning
mentality, united are currently at the gradual first stage of it after it being shattered last season
i think theres an upward curve in uniteds attacking verve.. there is an imagination and flair to it and the
attackers seem to be in tune with each other.. the passing and intricacy has improved but theres still that clear
bad habit of gifting possession to the opposition without any real reason.. even di maria is guilty of it.. i think the
importance of possession has to be drummed into the players.. measure your passes more accurately and
minimise error. Uniteds attack though looks unpredictable, oppositions can never know who exactly to shut
down because the threat comes from various angles.. This is probably one of van gaals philosophy, the fact he
wants the team to rely on its collective strenghth than any one individual.
Falcao is gradually building up some momentum and the goal hopefully will spark the confidence.. Some
doubted his all round game but hes actually good at linking the play up.. his movement is obviously top notch,
he is strong, athletic.. technically good and the sooner he finds his ruthless touch back the better but he is
improving and blending well
Di maria was on sung again.. seem to be carrying that hybrid left central mid well.. getting lot of touches,
breaking from deep and in that sense, he makes it difficult for teams to mark him out.. he is not playing as a by-
line hugging wide man.. he is blasting forward from a position defenders cant really venture into.. his pace and
accelerating power is remarkable.. he could improve even more with his release of the ball though, sometimes he
tends to want to to do too much but the ingenuity, the class is all there.. a constant threat and has brought a
different dimension to the previously static united midfield. 3 goals and couple assists.. nice!
Van persie still doesnt look up to it for me.. the technical qualities are still there but has lost the drive and
mobility.. think his place up top is certainly up for grabs
Mata again.. flashes but lacking substance.. he is in the similar mould to david silva but yet doesnt look as
effective.. im not sure what the issue is, perhaps he lacks the dynamism to deliver consistent impact.. he was on
the fringes of the game again.. floating around and not quite hitting the right tune.. the technical qualities are
obviously there but he will need to do far more to stay in this side, i think januzaj is breathing down his neck, i
think the belgian is more dynamic and will probably end up being the player that actually affects games. To be
honest, it seems the ideal game to play januzaj rather than mata
When i saw valencia on the team sheet.. i thought here we go again.. more static runs, more poor crosses but to
be fair to him, he played fairly well.. that right central mid in the diamond seems to suit him as he clearly has lost
his way as a wide man but he is still pretty mobile and physically imposing.. he kept the ball conservatively well
today but brought some balance.. i would still put herrera above him.
Blind put in another efficient dispaly, especially in the first half.. positioning well, knitting play and put in the
defensive shift as the anchoring central midfielder but he seems to lose grip in the 2nd half, perhaps a little tired
im not sure but for him to progress.. he will need to adapt to the intensity quicker and get stronger
rafael has been gathering consistency lately.. When fit and firing, he could reach the highest of places. His
competitive drive and determination coupled with technical qualities means he could turn out to be some top
right full back.. im sure van gaal will have been trying to improving his positioning and concentration but the
brazilian brings a lot of positives into the side. Hopefully he stays fit and continues to improve. His crosses have
gone up another level too, seemingly causing mayhem when he swings them in.. he is clearly enjoying his game
with all these top players, they certainly raise a players level
Thought de gea looked fantastic today.. Has got bigger and stronger.. those couple of years of being thrown into
the deep end have touhened him up.. his ability is in no doubt.. reflexes of a cat trying to catch its own shadow..
great shot stopper, great on the ball, gathering more experience which will only help him build that authority to
organise his defence even more but the potential is sky high.. Some of the saves were astonishing.. thought the
osman was bound for the net at least but he kept them out pretty well.. hopefully that enriches his confidence

http://therepublikofmancunia.com/five-things-we-learnt-from-united-2-1-everton/ 10/22
Rojo is gradually settling into the central defence.. he is pretty strong and composed but he does let complacency
creep in sometimes with his waywward passing to team mates who end up getting cauht on the ball.. he did it at
leicester and united conceded.. he needs to stay focused and sharp. Tough test to come no doubt but potential is
there.
I worried for mcnair today. Lukaku, on the big stage.. this was a recipe for teaching a rookie a tough lesson but
he has shown calmness and composure.. refused to be intimidated and fought well.. he will have lapses in
concentration as all younger players do but playing with the likes of falcao, rooney etc can only help a player
improve.
All in all, im actually pleased about a victory like this, one that involves grit to get over the line.. i would prefer
getting the job done earlier but points like this can only united on their way. A lot of improvement still to be
made no doubt but the foundation are being layed.. now off to westbrom and that wont be easy either.

Benjitee you give players time when you know they either have the potential or have the attributes required for
the highest level. Lets not forget fellaini has played 6 seasons in the premier league.. he should be hitting the
ground running immediately.. i just think he is at the wrong club.. the standards are higher at the level united
want to reach.. central midfield is a key area, crucial to the teams tempo.. fellaini cannot dictate the tempo of a
game and he doesnt have the defensive awareness to be an anchoring deep central mid.. he lacks sufficient
mobility and is ill disciplined.. no matter how much of time given will transform him, the fellaini seen now is the
fellaini you will get. As you say, if players arent contributing to the progress then give to younger players.. at
least you know you are investing in the right avenue which portrays footballing growth on uniteds path

I love watching Blind off the ball. His movement is fantastic and hes always making himself available to receive
the ball no matter how closely hes marked. When he does receive the ball from the defenders his first instinct is
to turn and lift his head up and play the ball up the pitch. Very rarely does he take more than 2 touches before
passing. Maybe the best of all is once he makes a pass he immediately goes looking for the ball back again to
repeat the process. Theres none if this standing around admiring his own pass that I see way to much off. Others
will get the praise this season but for me Blind is the one that holds everything together.

For once, I disagree on the last point. While we did look good at times, Mata was largely anonymous yet again.
Did literally NOTHING after the simple pass to Di Maria for his goal, wasted a great chance by miscontrolling
it. Thats about it. He cannot drift out of games like that for that long if he wants to have any chance of uprooting
Rooney. As it stands, Rooney walks straight back into the team after the suspension.

That performance by De Gea might possibly have meant the difference between the champions league and
Europa. If Everton tie or win then we are back to pointing fingers and trying to figure out where oh where have
we gone wrong. This win coming on top of holding on last week a man down are the type of wins we use to
grind out a few seasons ago.
The offense wasnt quite the irresistible force weve be seeing as of late early on in games. Not sure this is down
to the Rooney over Mata debate (of which I think Rooney is top choice) but rather due to Herrera bein out. For
me hes the key for us. His movement, awareness, tenacity and creativity give us that critical link from the back
to our boys up top. I love Blind (united till I die put it perfect) but I feel Carrick or Fletcher can at a similar role
(though maybe not as effectively) where as we dont really have anyone who can play Herreras role nearly as
effectively.

Mike Fibes says:
@Samuel @BenjieTee
Fellainis played 6 seasons in the Premier League. All under David Moyes. I think hes got enough about him as
a footballer to deserve at least 6 more months under LVG. You cant just assume that the fella wont progress. I
dont prescribe to this idea that once a player hits 25 that some kind of ceiling emerges that theyll never get
THAT much better. It happens. Coaches fail players, fail to make the most of their natural ability.
Also, the other half of the argument that players like Young and Fellaini are blocking the development of
youth, is hogwash. We can already see that if theyre good enough, LVG is playing them. Who is Fellaini
blocking? Ben Pearson potentially? The lad will get his chance. Hes good but you cant risk throwing him on for
the last 20 of a carefully poised game against Everton with two inexperienced centre backs behind him, you just
cant. If Ferdinand and Vidic had still been here perhaps, but not right now. No way. Likewise if we go back to a
3 at the back at some point (we will), youll have Shaw/Young/Rojo/James competing for the wing back slot.
Could Young make a left back? Quite possibly. Having the competition in there for now is absolutely vital, it
will ensure zero complacency, that whoever is first choice is there on merit, and not just makeshift.
I dont really care for this modern day ship em in / ship em out mentality in football. Once the transfer
window shuts I think fans should support the team, and support the players, all of them. Whistling and jeering
your own players (as as happened recently to the aforementioned Cleverley, Nani, Fellaini, Young) to me lacks
class.
And certainly under LVG this season, I think we have to trust that hes making the best decision for the team and
for the club. If he brings a player in, its because he can justify to himself the reasons for doing so. He has the
knowledge and experience to do so. He is more qualified than any of us to make that call. He can see in training
every day what a player has/hasnt got, what they can/cant do. He cares little for what Fellaini did last season,
he is only interested in the here and now. What can they bring on the pitch now. We should do the same. We
need to give players like this a fresh go, they might just surprise us. Battering their confidence with whistles and
jeers will do fuck all to help.
Look at Welbeck. One or two United fans with twitchy arse muscles after the Galatasaray game, but LVG knows
itll be a long time, if ever, he produces that kind of performance against a top Premier League or European side.
He doesnt affect the big games, he just doesnt and all LVG is truly interested in right now is finding his big
game players, who is going to change the course of big match, the key moments in a season. Di Maria? Nailed
on. Falcao? Should happen. Rooney? Proven. Blind, Herrera, Rojo? Strong possibilities. Hes making judgement
calls on everybody else, be it Blackett or Fellaini, Januzaj or Young.

i dont understand why there always has to be a fall guy with the people on here
today its mata. who assisted 1, created 3 chances, had 90% passing, completed 3 out of 6 tackles, gave us
composure and was always available for a pass. but no .. there has to be atleast one player in a united shirt that
has to be shat on.
That performance by De Gea might possibly have meant the difference between the champions league and
Europa .. not to get ahead of myself here but how are people aiming this low?!
we are currently fourth, with southampton above us who will inevitably drop points, we have got there mostly
with our strongest defence out injured. arsenal, liverpool, everton and to a lesser extent spurs dont look a danger
atall. i will be confident facing any of those teams. city and chelsea is the mystery for me as to whether we will
be able to finish above them or not but that dosnt matter we only need top 4 this year.
imagine what this squad can do once they have played together for a year?! in this squad there are not many
players that are being carried. and whats more players that were seen as deadwood a few months ago are showing

big signs of improvement, most notably valencia today!. everyone bought this summer was 26 or below (except
falcao) meaning everyone will be in their prime soon. we have youth talent smashing down the first team door,
not only showing they are up for the challenge when given a chance but actually genuinely impressing and not
looking out of shape alongside the likes of di maria atall!
and we have a manager that seemingly dosnt give a fuck atall .. and believe me thats a compliment! throw over
40 mil at monaco for falcao when we have world class strikers already? yeah fuck it go on then. buy a 60
million argentinian and use him as a box to box midfielder .. alright then. put a 19 year old paddy mcnair up
against west ham and lukaku when he hasnt had a single second of first team action before? great idea!! he just
dosnt show any signs of worrying when he has to do a gigantic decision like that .. and thats his best asset.
someone else said bringing on blackett and wilson when we were holding onto the lead shows he trusts them and
thats exactly right. and as it goes blackett potentially made a match winning block at the end

Well I agree with u in almost everything u said and I understand what u mean in the last point about rooney..
what I think is am more greatful now that a player like rooney could be out and we still got world class players to
cover for him.. 2010 when he scored many goals and was doing almost everything right we could never wish
rooney to be out of the squad and indeed we didnt have enough quality on the bench.. I was disaponted he was
injured againts B.munich and was not 100% in the second leg and we were knocked out of the champions lg.. I
guess all of us were disapointed as with a fit rooney we might have done the unthinkeble that year without
ronaldo who had left us for madrid.
My point is rooney was very important player in those days even with or without ronaldo on the team.. he still is
now although he have not fulfilled the potential we all saw in him.. his all around game and passion drives him
and helps the team than what many thinks.. all I still see is people not forgiving him as he wanted to leave.. come
on guys put it to rest, we need to move on.. people forgave ronaldo not only for wanting to leave but for leaving
us and even doing some crazy things like the plane last week so as to bring him back.. for sure if we can do such
crazy desparate show of feelings to ronaldo.. we can also forgive rooney and jus look at him as the lost son who
went astray but still came back home..
We need rooney now.. especialy in the big games as chelsea and man.cty.. he can fight we their strong midfilders
and defence than Mata.. I bet chelsea are happy he wont be there when we meet them.. even mourinho knows
what rooney brings on the table thats why he was desprate to sign him.. now guys lets stop hating on rooney and
start supporting our captain wazza# mufc all day,#

Mata was invisible doesnt mean he was a fall guy just an analysis of his performance. Hes still quality and will

Were not getting the plaudits we deserve for getting results with our backline which is full of inexperience. The
players have come in and by and large done the job well. Any other team would get praise but dont expect the
media to give us the same.
Fellaini wont cut it for me. Dont think hes got the skills for LVGs master plan.
The performances are getting better. The results at home are becoming steady and reliable again and the manager
seems to have more respect and faith from the squad. Could end up being better season than some of us imagined

10/7/2014 Five things we learnt from United 2-1 Everton
http://therepublikofmancunia.com/five-things-we-learnt-from-united-2-1-everton/ 13/22
1. DeGea when he saved the penalty, and saved all the shots in injury time it reminded me of Peter Schmeichel.
2. Falcao is a tiger he never gives up.
3. the return of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones & Johnny Evans will be key to United challenging for the title
4.Three wins in a row at OT proved Johann Cruyff was right saying United was stupid to appoint Moyes
though Cruyff doesnt see eye to eye with LVG he was spot on LVG would get United organised after the
disaster appointment with Moyes
5. Juan Mata as Louis Van Gaal Manchester Uniteds NUMBER TEN or PLAYMAKER just does not work
as a playmaker he should of provided link up play between midfield and the strikers whenever Danny Blind,
Angel Di Maria & Antonio Valencia have the ball he disappeared from the middle and was running up towards
the goal asking for a highball forcing either Falcao or Van Persie to dropped off in his place in order to
unwillingly provide the link play that was why LVG had to dropped Juan Mata & asked Wayne Rooney to
filled in as the no10 because Rooney provided a better job doing link up play between the midfielders & the
strikers against Leicester & then West Ham plus evidently LVG had said too that Wayne is a multi-functional
player than Mata who as a BETTER PLAYMAKER as claimed by some passionate United-Mata fans (I am so
sorry) seem to only score goals but he did assist for Di Maria and should be commended. IMO Wayne Rooney
is still a better no10 for LVGs United 1st XI
maybe Mata is an excellent playmaker for Roberto Di Matteo/Rafa Benitezs system but not for Jose
Mourinho/Louis Van Gaals system

dannysoya LOVES USAIN BOLT says:
For someone who costs 37 million pounds, Mata should be influencing the game MUCH MORE than he does
right now. He should grabbing games by the scruff of the neck but hes not that kind of player. He loves to drift
in and out of games. Everyone can see that he drifts in and out of games. Thats not some invented accusation to
make him look bad. Has to improve if he wants to take Rooneys place. Simple.

Spot on Danny..People just dont get..Mike Fibes still still doesnt get it..Fellaini has been in the EPL for 6 good
seasons..He should hit the ground running..When Kagawa came to United he couldnt play in his preferred role
because of Rooney and it greatly affected his form.Fellaini requested to play in defensive midfield and he has
been ATROCIOUS in that role.and there is no place as a no10 for him, so where actually can he playUnited
have been crying for a midfielder who can dictate the tempo of he game. That role is too crucial for an expensive
player to be given timeBlind and Herrera are from different leagues but they have already stamped they
authority in the midfieldThe moment Fellaini came on we lost our composure in midfield..thats the same issue
with Smalling when he came on for the Leicester game.We cannot afford to carry any passengers.we need a team
where every player will play his role effectively..Mata SHOULD hit the ground running..He sold for the same
reason we are complaining about now and that alone should be worrying.Mourinho was under LVG once so they
more or less share the same philosophy about the type of players they want in their team. What is good for
Mourinho will certainly be good for LVGWhat is not good for Mourinho will certainly not be good for LVG
and its beginning to show..He offers assist but thats not enough. When we get another good box to box midfielder
Herrera can easily be put in Matas position and he will work WONDERS. These are the qualities required of a
modern no10..ability to play anywhere..Just look at David Silva and ask yourself if you wouldnt swap Mata for
himHe just doesnt influence games that much for his price tag.

Marvin Felix says:
yes SIMPLE Mata needs to adapt to Manchester United philosophy not the other way around people carry on
& on about not replacing Paul Scholes well he is what Manchester United Midfield bossing philosophy all
about Mata if he ever dream of replacing Paul Scholes he better become the boss in the middle of the park for
United he should receive pass and then pass and repeat it over & over again, the only thing he is doing now
when they attack he disappear from his position and runaway into goal scoring position in location that was
impossible to pass what is more frustrating was his play force the strikers (Falcao or RVP) to unwillingly drop
off to his position and disrupted the flow of play Paul Scholes didnt force his strikers to dropped off for him he
created lost of goalscoring chances for them (Cantona, Andy Cole, Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney & CRon) that was
why people like Zidane & Xavi admire him but apart from creating chances for them it was the way he
ochestrated the flow of game he controlled the game he boss the middle like no other it was crazy to see even
with the stray tackles Paul did scored lots of goals but that was because Fergie told him to just to accomodate
Juan Veron it was a success but Fergie maybe did not like the way Veron controlled the flow of game he always
did not pinpoint his pass not like Paul Scholes he was sold to Chelsea anyway people have their own opinion
saying Mata is one of the best PLAYMAKER in the world but not for Manchester United they can have their
way its their opinion but for Juan Mata is not Manchester Uniteds playmaker

his lack of dynamism but you cant get away with having a passenger in the side in the premier league.. He will
have to adapt his game to united r some tough decisions will have to be made. He needs to be more effective, he
seems to float around too often and the pace of the game passing him by.. Im not sure if he will ever be all

Markfibes you talk as if the six seasons fellaini spent in the premier league will or should be disregarded.. On
what basis can any form of justification be made for his purchase as a player let alone one good enough for
united? His record and appearances/impact at his former clubs is where conclusions will be drawn from.. He
clearly would never have sniffed a chance to be at united if moyes wasnt appointed, it seemed like the scot
bringing his pals along with him rather than it being based on any footballing logic. He tried bringing baines too
which wouldve bern ridiculous. Fellaini for 6 seasons played within a system and style of play that went
together with his.. His height and physique was built for tye direct route one football and he thrived at everton
Long diagonal balls, chest or flick it to pienaar and get in the box.. He caused mayhem to nearly every team in
the box.. Not because he was brilliant and silky but due to the bullish method he plays. He played and suited
being behind the center-forward.. He never once stood out in central midfield, certainly not to the point of big
european clubs wanting him to improve their midfield. He is clumsy, slow and ill disciplined. He can do some of
the basics okay but he doesnt fit into the philosophy of manchester united, he lacks the required attributes.
At united, the tables clearly have changed. This club has high standards, the basic method in which fellaini was
never going to cut it really.. He was demanded to play deeper because he hasnt got the quality to even contest
the likes of rooney.. Issue is, he never shone as a central mid and that has resulted in him being found out at the
highest level. I understand van gaals ability to improve players but I think fellaini beyond that, hes an
established experienced player that should hit the ground running without any insecurity. His game should be
10/7/2014 Five things we learnt from United 2-1 Everton
http://therepublikofmancunia.com/five-things-we-learnt-from-united-2-1-everton/ 16/22
coming together and he indeed should be dominating games for the position he was bought for
He will never do that, he looks like a farm tractor trudging on amongst sport cars, an agriculture footballer
amongst top class. He is not good enough and his exit is inevitable even if you still hold out some hope.
My point players like him blocking the path of younger players is not neccessary based on ability as I think
quality shines through in the end but the presence of the likes of fellaini, young etc.. Experienced footballers on
high wages, theres an obligation to place them to fill the bench, to show they are useful and atractive to other
clubs.. That hinders the likes of andreas periera who could have that same valuable game time to develop, he is
more part of the furniture of the club than young ever will be..

Fellaini Van Gaal better convert him into a Central Defender because he is tall for fuck sake he is 64 but
putting him in at center back is a big risk or he could take the role of Chicarito i.e. the attacking super sub that is
the only way we can use him or else in January LVG should sell him to Napoli he does not brings anything to
United he only ever elbowed anyone thank god he didnt elbowed Rafael while chasing Bryan Oviedo I
believe Van Gaal is going to continue using Fellaini negatively just to counter opposition manager throwing their
3 trump cards of substitution just like what Van Gaal did in response against Martinez throwing in Oviedo into
the fray but still Oviedo escaped too many times Fellaini did not do his job properly instead he went up too
many times in order to score a goal LVG did explained why he replaced Falcao with Wilson and then later
Valencia with Fellaini it was to counter with Baines overlapping and Valencias fitness plus Oviedos attacking
threats respectively
proponents of Fellaini staying at United this turd of a tree trunk is reduce to being use negatively as a specialist
subs and that to counter opposing manager attacking trump card substitution and the cost is a cool 27 million
pound wooo shocker

I was as skeptical as anyone about the signing of Fellaini, yes we overpaid and yeah the likelihood is that hell be

what hes doing with him, whether hes actually good enough or not.
Fellaini has had decent periods in games nothing flashy but solid, effective if inconsistent. Im not asking
people to worship him, but his confidence isnt exactly going to flourish to a soundtrack of jeering and whistling.
Hes here now until at least January, possibly the summer, and as much as it might pain us all, I think fans like

@Mike. I see what you mean but I dont want Mata compromising his attacking duties because hes chasing
down every loose ball but his pressing could be better. Mostly token efforts.
Watching Chelsea the other day, they were stifling Arsenal in their own half making it difficult for them to into
forward positions let alone mount a decent attack. We need to to be bit better in that regard.
I think Fellaini can be a very solid player, his control and passing is good and while hardly a defence splitter he
does like to move the ball forward. His big drawback is that hes slow, he looks painfully cumbersome at times
but he is useful and can be effective used the right way.

lukemallia says:
Dont think the criticism of De Gea in the first few games was unfair at all. He went through 6 games without
having made a single save bar the save against Burnley and whilst it may be hard to point the finger at him for
any of the goals, top class keepers make saves they arent expected to like the 3 he made vs Everton.
If he has been getting criticism then he responded to it in the best possible way which shows character. The
Everton game does not make him a world class keeper just yet though he needs to do it on a more consistent
basis in order to be considered as one but hes on the right track.
Criticising a player after one game is unfair, criticising a player after 6 poor games is acceptable and should be
done as long as people dont go overboard with it.
