The basic philosophy of a CAMEL based network is the introduction of a control
layer, which contains the service logic and service data at a central point, thus
allowing existing and new services to be handled more effectively. Furthermore,
communication and service identification is standardized.
The following components are required for processing CAMEL services:

The mobile service switching point M-SSP forms the transition from the basic
network to the intelligent network node. The SSP recognizes whether a service
must be processed by the CSE and, if so, requests service-specific information
accordingly. In addition to accessing the CSE, the SSP has the normal switching
function. It may be located in the home- or visited network of the IN-subscriber.
Both, GSM-MSCs and GPRS-SGSNs can provide the SSP functionality.

The CAMEL service environment CSE is the IN node that controls the various
services. The CSE is connected to the SSP by a CCS7 signaling network. The
CSE contains customer and network data, which are accessed during the
execution of a service. It is always located in the HPLMN of the IN-subscriber.
GSM and GPRS IN services may be handled by the same CSE.

The service management point SMP provides deployment and provision of the
CAMEL services. I.e. the network operator is able to create new CAMEL services
with the help of the so-called SCE (Service Creation Environment) and the
customer or service subscriber may administrate and control the customer-specific
function with help of the CSC (Customer Service Control). Only services or service
modifications that have been approved and tested in the SMP will be downloaded
to the dislocated CSEs.

An intelligent periphery IP provides resources (e.g. announcements, code receiver,
tone generators) for a user dialog. No IP is foreseen for SGSNs so far and there
are no operations yet to control SGSN-IP.

The HLR, as the central subscriber database for GSM and GPRS, may have a
MAP connection to the CSE to allow 'Any Time Operations' and to forward USSD
codes to the CSE.

Service users are the calling parties that make use of an IN service. In case of
subscribed CAMEL In services, the service users are always mobile subscribers,
either GSM or GPRS.

Service subscribers pay for a service offered by the network operator in order to
make it available to their service users (e.g. company, offering a VPN). Service
subscribers have the right to modify their subscriber data in the IN database. In the
special case of the prepaid service, the service user is also service subscriber.

GSM PLMN
The IN functionality at the GSM M-SSP is divided into the entities Call Control
Function (gsmCCF), which communicates with the Service Switching Function
(gsmSSF). At the M-SSP side the gsmSSF is also connected to the Specialized
Resource Function (gsmSRF). Both units gsmSSF and gsmSRF can communicate
with the CAMEL Service Environment (CSE).
In contrast to the SSP part, the CSE contains just two different functional entities.
The Service Control Function (gsmSCF) is connected to the gsmSSF/gsmSRF at
the M-SSP side and inside the CSE to the Service Data Function (gsmSDF).

GPRS PLMN
In addition to the functional entities mentioned above, a CAMEL capable SGSN
houses a Service Switching Function (gprsSSF) that is responsible for triggering IN
dialogs and communication with the gsmSCF.

TIP
The functional entities described here are defined in ITU Q.1214

2.1 Call Control Function (gsmCCF)
The Call Control Function represents the IN part within the call processing (set up
and release of calls). Considered as enhanced call processing, the tasks of gsmCCF
are to provide trigger mechanisms (to access the gsmSCF via gsmSSF) and to allow
the IN service logic to influence the processing of IN calls.
The gsmCCF consists of an originating gsmCCF and a terminating gsmCCF, which
are based on the Originating Basic Call State Model and on the Terminating Basic
Call State Model for IN calls.

2.2 Service Switching Function (gsmSSF)
The Service Switching Function is the interface between Call Control Function and
Service Control Function (CSE-side). Forming an interface between these entities,
the gsmSSF both manages the signaling from gsmCCF to gsmSCF and allows the
gsmSCF to direct the gsmCCF.

2.3 Specialized Resource Function (gsmSRF)
The Specialized Resource Function provides the specialized recourses required for
the execution of IN provided services (e.g. code receivers, announcements,
conference bridges, etc.).
It interacts between gsmSCF and gsmSSF.
It may contain the logic and processing capability to receive/send and convert
informations received from users.
It may contain functionality similar to the gsmCCF to manage connections to the
specialized resources.

2.4 Service Control Function (gsmSCF)
The Service Control Function cooperates with the Call Control Function in the
processing of IN service requests via the Service Switching Function.
It commands and monitors the gsmCCF in order to direct the processing of IN calls.
The gsmSCF may interact with other functional entities to access additional service
logic or to obtain information required for processing an IN call.
It contains the logic and processing capability required to handle IN provided service
attempts.

2.5 Service Data Function (gsmSDF)
The Service Data Function contains customer and network data for real time access
by the gsmSCF during the execution of an IN service.
An interaction to other gsmSDFs is possible, if necessary.
The gsmSDF is managed, updated and /or otherwise administrated by a Service
Management Function.

2.6 GPRS Service Switching Function (gprsSSF)
The gprsSSF is a functional entity that interfaces the SGSN to the gsmSCF. The
concept of the gprsSSF is derived from the gsmSSF, but it uses different triggering
mechanisms due to the nature of the mobile GPRS network.
The SGSN monitors on request the GPRS events and informs the gprsSSF of these
events during processing, enabling the gprsSSF to control the execution of the GPRS
session or individual PDP contexts in the SGSN.
The interface between gprsSSF and gsmSCF is used by the gsmSCF to control an
individual PDP context (or a GPRS session) in a certain gprsSSF. Relationships
between the gprsSSF and the gsmSCF (GPRS IN dialogues) on this interface are
opened as a result of the gprsSSF sending a request for instructions to the gsmSCF.
Please note that neither a gprsCCF nor a gprsSRF exists.
