Objectives
Definition :
To review & discuss the technology of fiber-wireless (FiWi)
access networks
Apart from that, we aim at:
a) To show the RoF and R&F design
b) To calculate the Power Budget and RiseTime Budget
Highlights key enabling optical as well as wireless
technologies and explains their role in emerging FiWi
networks.
FiWi Network Concept
Deployment of RoF and R&F
Able to consolidate optical & wireless access networks
(usually run independent of each other)
Combining the huge amount of available bandwidth of
optical networks and ubiquity and mobility of wireless
access networks
Objectives project research:
(a) reduce the cost
(b) reduce complexity
FiWi Network Advantages
Good performance in longevity
Low maintenance due using fiber
Form powerful platform for the support and creation of
emerging
More attractive than standalone fiber
Cost saving by combining fiber with wireless
technologies devices
Could extend the coverage without imposing stringent
limits on the size of optical backhaul
Increase the wireless capacity and reduce access point
complexity through centralized management

Conclusions
By converging optical and wireless access technologies,
hybrid FiWi access networks hold great promise to
support a plethora of future and emerging broadband
services and applications on the same infrastructure.
We highlight the two recent RoF and R&F testbeds which
connect to wireless access networks
Integrates two Ethernet passive optical networks
(EPONs) and IEEE 802.11g WLAN-bas wireless mesh
network (WMN) on R&F
The video transmission sharply deteriorates for an
increasing number of wireless hops.
However, EPON and WMN networks independently
running from each other become poor network
performance.
