Sparks 2 Teachers Resource Book offers
information and tips to help you get the most from
all the teachers materials. It also contains additional
photocopiable resources to help widen and support
the childrens learning.
Flashcards
Flashcards are an excellent classroom tool to help
introduce, reinforce and review vocabulary. Sparks
comes with a pack of 85 full colour flashcards
illustrating key vocabulary. Instructions for using the
flashcards are given in the teaching notes for each
lesson.
Each picture flashcard has a corresponding word
card which can be used to help develop childrens
reading skills, to assist in writing activities and to use
in matching activities. All the flashcards are colour
coded by unit for easy identification.
The Sparks flashcards can also be used in a variety
of games which are explained on the Options pages
of the Teachers Book. Children learn best when
they enjoy what they are doing and games provide
a way to engage childrens interest and enthusiasm.
Games offer valuable opportunities to use the
language for real purposes and provide enjoyable
occasions for repeating and reinforcing the
language, supporting retention and recall. Games
which incorporate active methods using physical
response are ideal for assimilating language.
The children also have their own key vocabulary
pop-outs which can be used in class or at home.
There are games and activity ideas on the Options
pages of the Teachers Book. The children can make
envelopes or use food bags to store their pop-outs.
Posters with pop-outs
Each unit of Sparks is accompanied by two posters
with pop-outs. Side A is used to introduce and
practise the vocabulary and content of the unit.
Side B is used to introduce the story which allows
you and the students to recreate the story as you
listen, providing a fun, visual understanding of what
happens. The Teachers Book gives full instructions
of when and how to use the posters and pop-outs.
The pop-outs can also be used as flashcards.
Tips
Keep the pop-outs for each unit in an envelope
or sandwich bag to avoid them getting lost or
mixed up.
Put two nails or drawing pins on the wall or in
the wood of the blackboard and hang up the
poster using two bulldog clips to avoid damage
and the mess of Blu-Tack or adhesive tape. The
poster is easily displayed and reversed.
Hang the posters at the height of the children
so that they can easily see them and participate
with the activities.
Puppet and Stick puppets
Puppets are excellent teaching aids which are
regularly used in many primary and language
learning classrooms.
Sparks 1 and 2 provide a friendly soft puppet with
accessories and four stick puppets of the Twiggles,
the main characters of the course.
The puppets can be used on a regular basis
to introduce and practise class work or less
frequently in more specific activities, depending
on the teachers confidence and how the children
respond. A puppet can create a more fun, playful
environment where children feel more relaxed and
willing to participate.
A puppet in the language classroom provides an
additional fluent English speaker for the teacher
to talk to. Having two English speakers in the
classroom helps learning as children can observe
and imitate the conversations. Teachers can use the
puppet to model the target language and dialogues.
Puppets can also work as a psychological aid to shy
or less confident children who may be unsure of a
word or pronunciation.

Tips
Treat the puppets as real people, if you talk to
them make sure you look at them. If a puppet is
talking, make sure it looks at the children.
Give the soft puppet a voice and a personality
to make it more realistic and interesting for the
children.
As a group, choose a name for the soft puppet,
preferably an English name that no other child
in the class has.
Make sure the puppets only speak in English and
explain that they only understand English too.
Practise using the puppet in front of a mirror
until you become more confident using it and
making it come alive.
Take photos of the puppets with different
objects, doing activities or in different places to
coincide with the topics of the units.
Let the children have the opportunity of
handling the puppets. Ask them a question
while they are operating one and if they answer
incorrectly then the puppet can be to blame.
The stick puppets can be used to re-enact the
stories and songs in the book.
Use the puppets to model appropriate
behaviour in the classroom or the answers to
exercises.
Story cards
Storytelling is very much part of the primary
curriculum and Sparks provides an entertaining
story in each unit. Apart from a poster and pop-outs
to aid with the storytelling, there is also a pack of 64
full colour story cards 8 per story. The story cards
have an enlarged version of the illustrations for each
story in the students book on one side and the text
for that part of the story on the reverse.
Use the cards to:
tell the story before, during or after listening.
ask children to predict what might happen
in the story.
practise questions and answers.
introduce and practise vocabulary.
practise temporal sequencing of a story.
describe a scene.
develop reading and literacy skills.
E-solutions
All the Sparks digital components run on Windows,
Linux or MAC operating systems and are compatible
with all interactive whiteboard (IWB) software.
Insert the Multi-ROM or the CD-ROM into the
computer connected to the IWB. If it fails to run
automatically, click on exeWin.exe to run.
The Sparks E-solutions pack includes three
CD-ROMs:
1) Students Multi-ROM
Sparks 2 Multi-ROM is a fantastic interactive
resource for both children and teachers which
provides thorough practice of the Students Book
contents. It contains eight units with interactive
activities covering all the main language taught in
the Students Book.
Sparks 2 Multi-ROM can be used in class with
an IWB to exploit the course contents while also
helping children understand the concept of working
together as a team to achieve a common objective.
Alternatively, it can be used on an individual level
by children working alone either in the Multimedia
Lab or at home, reinforcing their language learning
outside the classroom.
How to use Sparks 2 Multi-ROM on an interactive
whiteboard (IWB)
Main menu: Access to units
Click on the unit. 1
Click on the relevant activity to open it. 2
Click on 3 MENU to go back to the main menu.
Click on 4 EXIT to exit the Multi-ROM.
Let's remember! is a section which includes four
activities and a song to both revise the contents
from Sparks 1 and to prepare for Sparks 2.
Unit menu
Each unit contains four Activities which provide
further practice of the Students Book contents. A
virtual teacher explains how each activity works
before the activity starts. Click on the HELP icon to
show the animation again.

Some activities contain more than one screen. Click
on the icon on the bottom menu to access the next
screen.
Most activities also include a final screen with
animations to review the key concepts presented in
each exercise.
Each unit contains a digital version of the Students
Book story and a listening comprehension activity.
The story runs automatically to facilitate its
projection. The digital story is an excellent tool to
attract the childrens attention.
Each unit also contains one of the songs from the
Students Book. The children play and collaborate
together whilst listening to a song. There are three
different types of games:
Colouring. This helps to develop the childrens 1
ICT skills while promoting their creative
expression.
Do a puzzle. Jigsaw puzzles can help young 2
children develop hand-eye coordination and
problem solving skills. They also help develop
children's visual-spatial skills.
Sparks 2 interactive puzzles are a fun as well as
an educational resource.
Find the seven differences. Use this game to 3
develop childrens observational and reasoning
skills.
The Phonics section offers an additional activity to
consolidate the childrens listening and language
skills.
In Festivals there are three games. Listen to the
Festivals songs and play one of the Multi-ROM
games with your class.
The Multi-ROM also contains a screen to listen to all
the songs of the course.
Tips for using the students audio material
Sparks Multi-ROM contains the students audio
material for PC or CD player. Insert the Multi-ROM
into a CD player or PC to listen to the students
audio material. The first eight tracks are songs
from the Students Book which can be used as
background music as the children work.
2) Teachers Interactive Resources CD-ROM for IWB
This fully interactive resource for use on interactive
whiteboards provides teachers with alternative
and innovative ways to approach the Sparks course
contents. It contains the e-flashcards, e-storycards
and e-posters along with the full audio material, all
at the click of a button.
The interactive tools for the children are placed
at a lower level on the screen to facilitate their
participation with the IWB. The interactive tools for
the teacher are located at the top of the screen to
help teachers guide and control the childrens work.
Encourage class interaction and develop the
childrens ICT skills by allowing them to use the
interactive stylus to follow your instructions.
Use the e-flashcards, e-storycards and e-posters
to present and revise key concepts throughout the
unit. Alternate or combine the use of conventional
flashcards, story cards and posters with the
interactive ones to make your teaching more varied
and maintain the childrens attention.
E-flashcards
The e-flashcards can be used to practise all four
language skills in a very user-friendly way. You can
decide which functions to use depending on your
specific needs:
simply show a picture and ask the children to
name it or ask them to use the interactive stylus
to identify one of the pictures. All the pictures
are placed at the bottom of the screen to make
them easily accessible.
click on the TEXT button to show the written
form and promote reading skills.
click on the AUDIO button to hear the word and
practise the correct pronunciation.
give the children the interactive stylus and ask
them to write or copy the word.

E-storycards
E-storycards provide an alternative way to present
the story to the whole class. You can decide whether
you want to play it automatically or to work with
individual frames to focus on specific items. Use it
manually without audio or pause it for you or the
children to retell the story in your own words.
E-posters
The e-posters include both sides of the conventional
poster along with the interactive pop-outs. This
flexible resource permits a wide range of interactive
activities.
Side A:
Present Lesson 1 of the unit using the e-poster, the
interactive pop-outs and the e-poster audio.
Play the class CD to exploit other lessons in the unit.
The interactive pop-outs can be moved anywhere
on the e-poster allowing you to give your own
instructions to reinforce basic concepts, to evaluate
or to expand the course contents. Just by clicking on
RESTART all the pop-outs return to the bottom of
the screen.
Side B
Use this side to present the story. Ask the children
to drag and drop the interactive pop-outs on the
IWB to tell the story either as they listen or as a test
to evaluate comprehension. Encourage alternative
endings or variations to the story by placing the
pop-outs on a different part of the screen.
3) The Interactive Young Learner Practice CD-ROM
(Starters level)
This CD-ROM includes three complete interactive
exams for YLE practice on an interactive
whiteboard. The interactive tools for the children
are placed at a lower level on the screen to facilitate
their participation with the IWB. The interactive
tools for the teacher are located at the top of the
screen to help teachers guide and control the
childrens work on the IWB.
Apart from IWB exploitation, the Interactive
YLE Practice CD-ROM also contains a network
installation facility which enables the children to
work at their own rythym in the Multimedia Lab.
This helps teachers cater for mixed ability settings.
Tips
Teachers can focus on practising one activity type or
have the children complete one exam at a time. The
CD-ROM contains a printable version of each exam
which includes tips for conducting the Speaking
Exams, as well as all the answers.
DVD
The Sparks 2 DVD is an entertaining teaching
resource divided into various sections for each unit.
An animated song for each unit allows the teacher
and the children to work with the song in an
alternative and fun way. A karaoke version of the
song is available with the words appearing in colour
at the bottom of the screen to help develop reading
skills.
A Picture Dictionary allows you to review the
vocabulary from the unit in three steps:
see the picture and ask the children to name it.
see the written word and ask them to read it.
hear the word to reinforce pronunciation.
The Real Kids section contains short conversations
featuring native English children in a natural setting
using vocabulary and content from the unit. It is also
possible to play the real kids section with subtitles
to encourage reading skills. There is a photocopiable
worksheet for each real kids unit.
Each unit contains a Play all facility. The main menu
also includes a Play all songs and a Play all Real
Kids option.
Tips for the Test - YLE and Trinity
The Cambridge Young Learner exams are designed
for children aged from 7 to 12 years old. They are
tested normally in their own school environment or
an exam centre, and the exams all follow the same
format. There are three levels: Starters, Movers and
Flyers. In terms of grammar and lexis, the Flyers level
is on par with the KET exams. The difference is that,
unlike the exams for older students, children cannot
fail the YLE. Every participant is given a diploma
with badges in Reading, Writing, Listening and
Speaking. The badges are coloured in depending on
the success of the candidate.

Exams follow a very set format. The children never
write on the exam papers, rather they answer on
an answer sheet, usually with one word answers.
They are tested in groups, except for the Speaking
session, where the test is given individually.

The Sparks E-solutions YLE CD-ROM includes three
complete tests. These can be printed out in colour
and used for classroom practice; one set can be
used many times. The children write their answers
on a piece of paper except for the last page of the
Listening exams, which is used for colouring and
therefore can only be used once.

Tips
When doing the practice exams it is best to
recreate similar circumstances as when the
children will do the exam themselves, allow
them the same amount of time, and have them
practice exam techniques.

information about the exams
The interactive activities on the CD-ROM are
divided into the different sections of the exams.
This way the teacher may choose to practice
the same exam question in various exams or
practice once complete exam, or pick and
choose activities from different exams.
Trinity College London, Graded Examinations in
Spoken English
The Trinity Examinations in Spoken English are
one-to-one oral examinations with a native English
speaking Trinity examiner, which test a students
speaking and listening skills. The exams provide an
official recognition of a students level of spoken
English and are accepted by universities and
employers worldwide. Candidates must be aged 7
or over.
The examinations are divided into a series of 12 oral
exams which test the students general conversation
and ability to discuss prepared topics. The exam
grades range from absolute beginner level to near
native fluency.
Apart from being a recognised meter of a students
skills in English, the examination also works as a
motivational tool encouraging students to practice
and try to communicate in English.
Tips
Each English lesson, ask general questions such
as What day is it today? Whats the weather like
today? Is it spring or summer? How old are you?
Encourage full answers whenever asking
questions. T: What day is it today? SS:Tuesday. T:
Its Tuesday.
When asking questions, if a child does not know
the answer, encourage them to say I dont
know or I cant remember or Im sorry, I dont
know the word in English, rather than remaining
silent or saying errr.
Make question practice fun. Do it in the form of a
team quiz and award points. Or ask questions at
the end of a lesson, whoever answers correctly
can line up first.
Practise for the exam in regular, short sessions
so candidates become more confident with the
style of question and can answer more rapidly
and naturally.
When choosing a grade for candidates, consider
the childs personality as well as their level of
English. A shy child with a good level of English,
may not do as well as a more outgoing child
who speaks more spontaneously.
Encourage the children to ask questions too.
From Level 2 onwards they are expected to ask
the examiner questions.

Sparks optional worksheets can be photocopied
according to the needs of individual children or the
class as a whole.

Write Toys on the board and draw

each child to draw and label their
