Hip hop connection obviously has very different target
audience to Top of The Pops. HHC is aimed at older
teenagers and young adults (17-2! and it revolves around
hip hop"rap #here as T$TP is aimed at young teenagers or
even pre-teens that have a high disposable income through
poc%et money and it focuses on chart music. &minem is a
#ell established rap artist #ho is no# very popular and
#ealthy' he raps in the verses of songs by very famous
artists such as (ihanna as #ell as having his o#n albums. )n
HHC' &minem is #earing a suit symbolising he ta%es #hat
he does very seriously but the conventions #hich commonly
come along #ith the hip hop genre are still blatantly
identifiable. *or e+ample' he has a gun in his poc%et as #ell
as a lighter #ith an active flame #hich symbolises that he
is dangerous or violent, his tie is red as #ell #hich has
connotations of danger. Ho#ever' an alternative
interpretation could be that in fact the lighter represents
that he has metaphorically -set the #orld on fire. in terms
of his career and ho# fast his music has spread' mirroring
a fire. The camera angle is also interesting due to the
camera angle being a lo# shot #hich enhances his mean
facial e+pression' #hich symboli/es po#er' because he is
enforcing his po#er by loo%ing do#n on his audience. The
headline 0Changed the game1 is in honour of his place in
the music industry' underlining the fact that he changed
the music industry for the better. $n the contrary' top of
the pops conveys &minem very differently' almost as
though he is innocent as it uses t#o very different
e+tremes (disgusting and genius! to allo# the reader to
enforce their o#n opinion about the #rapper. He is sho#n
#earing more casual clothes in this maga/ine' stuff that
the target audience are more li%ely to #ear. The t#o
maga/ines portray &minem in completely different #ays as
in HHC he is sho#n as being an aggressor and someone to
be scared of #here as in T$TP he is sho#n as being more
of an innocent victim #ho is upset or even scared. )
believe this is due to the t#o maga/ines having very
different target audiences as #ell as them being #ritten
at different times in &minem.s career. T$TP resembles
the foundations of his career #here it #as open to
interpretation #hether you li%ed him or not and #hether
he #as successful #here as HHC portrays &minem as an
established artist at the height of his career.
