Introduction
In the current health care environment, physicians often find themselves in the role of a
manager, hether it !e in his"her on practice, in hospitals, in academic departments, either
in private organi#ations or in government institutions. Physician$managers or% at every
level of health care organi#ations, across the continuum of care, ithin large and comple&
ur!an systems or small rural settings.
' physician(s management role may conflict ith his other responsi!ilities in clinical care,
teaching and research. )ut !eing in management provides a great opportunity for physicians
to influence the health care system and improve the *uality of health care. Physicians are also
a!le to use important s%ills and values learned during their years of medical training, such as
o!servation, pro!lem$solving, analysis and ethical +udgment, hich are all important in their
role as managers.
This SGD involves the discussion on the e&periences of physicians as managers. Students ill
intervie at least to physicians ho have managerial e&perience. The reading assignment on
the role of physicians as managers ill serve as additional input during the discussion.
