Automatic Street Light Control
Abstract
On a daily basis street lights consume large amounts of power through the night. However in many
places like residential areas the street lights are not required all through the night because of sparse
movement in such areas, late in the night. Hence in areas like these and also in general in areas
where there is limited movement in the late night, the street lights waste lot of power.
This project is aimed at design and implementation of a automatic system where in the street lights
that are not required through the night can be either turned off, or dimmed. Alternatively instead of
all the lights being turned on, a few lights can be turned on. For example on a street the alternate
lights can be turned on.
There are two sections to the project, on is a RF based device from which the lights can be controlled
from a remote location. It can be a computer based system where in the process can be automated
further. Using small software on a computer the on/off times of lights can be programmed. The
pattern in which the lights have to be turned on can also be programmer, as in alternate lights or
dimming of lights etc.
The control information is transmitted to a receiver placed close to the lights themselves. This device
is based on a microcontroller and it can receive the control instructions from the remote device and
apply the same to the lights. For this the microcontroller if connected to relay drive circuits, using
which the lights can be controlled. Additionally LDR (Light dependent resistors) can be placed near
each light to check if the lights are glowing, if a certain light is not glowing then the adjacent light can
automatically be turned on.
Also for residential localities where there is very little movement on the street in the night we can
turn on the lights only if someone is moving on the street using PIR motion detectors. Thus this
project once implemented on a large scale can bring in significant reductions in the power
consumption caused by street lights.

Existing System
1. At this point in time there is no existing system existing for power savings on street lights.
2. Only solar powered lights have been implemented in certain places but they are proving to
be useless because they are not able to meet the power requirement of conventional lights.

Proposed System
1. The proposed system depends on using LED lights which are inherently efficient.
2. Further efficiency is improved using persistence of vision.
