Exercise 5.

3: Offsite versus On Site

Q1. Your organization has approximately 10TB of data, and you need to decide if your
organization should have on-site or offsite tape storage.
Our organization has approximately 10TB of data, according to me our organization should have
offsite tape storage because offsite backup location is not under the disaster area, we can access
data via internet, back up data can be shared with a number of different remote locations. Any
organization should have offsite back up, it is safe as compared to onsite storage.
Q2. Your organization must be able to easily recover data no older than one month, as an
operational requirement.
The maximum permissible time for restoration is one month. Our organization able to recover
data because the offsite storage location is not so far and not so close, data can be easily
recovered as it is in the same town or city.
Q3. Your organization's further requirement is that recovery operations must resume at
minimal levels for all systems within two weeks of a total catastrophe at the data centre.
According to the requirement of our organization, data can be recovered electronically or transfer
data from disk to disk (faster transfer). As soon as the backup data is recovered, recovery
operations for other systems will be resumed.
Q4. Decide how your organization should house its backups.
As our organization store its back up at offsite storage. The location of that secondary storage is
at that place where there is less risk of disaster and to house organizations backup some
preventive measures should be taken such as: technically strong, good quality machinery,
disaster proof safes to store backup tapes like climate controlled fireproof, waterproof. For back
up use good quality magnetic tapes, disks etc.

PROJECT 5.1
Q1- Assume you have a large data center consisting of over 300 systems with multiple
operating systems.
Our data center consists over 300 systems and has multiple operating systems such as windows,
UNIX, Linux, Mac OS.
Q2- The entire data center produces approximately 10TB of data today, grows
approximately 1TB per year, and only changes about 10% per week.
Q3- Develop a complete backup system for the data center that allows the organization to
quickly recover any system to data no older than one week with tapes in the facility.
Our data center produces 1 TB data per year, it develops new software and programs and data is
backed up. There are just 10% changes per week like there are some software updates, small
changes in the programming etc.
We are developing a backup system for the data center for the data no older than one week. With
the help of this backup system data can be recovered very quickly. In the backup system we are
using tapes. The storage capacity of these tapes is 100GB. We are backing up data no older than
week so we are using a set of tapes for a week. We are using magnetic tapes of good quality. A
tape drive provides sequential access storage, unlike a disk drive, which provides random
access storage.
Our backup location site is an offsite location but not so far from the data center. It is a hot
backup site. We use magnetic tapes for backup and make the location safer. Use preventions like
keep the magnetic tapes in a safe which is disaster free, water proof, fire proof etc. Some
employees must be there at the offsite location 24/7. All the data stored in this hot site location.
In case of any disaster data can be backed up from this site quickly and easily. Speed of transfer
from tape to tape is faster.
