Child Abuse
Introduction
Child abuse is the physical, sexual or emotional maltreatment or neglect of a child or
children. Child abuse is more than bruises or broken bones. While physical abuse is shocking
due to the scars it leaves, not all child abuse is as obvious. Ignoring childrens needs, putting
them in unsupervised, dangerous situations, or making a child feel worthless or stupid are
also child abuse.
Types of Child Abuse

o Physical abuse is defined as any physical injury or death inflicted other than by
accidental means

o Unexplained bruises on the face, lips, mouth, back, buttocks, and thighs
o Human bites
o Multiple hospital visits
o Seems frightened of parents and does not want to go home

Sexual Abuse
o Sexual abuse occurs when a person uses power over a child, and directly involves the
child in any sexual act, involves the child in pornography, or forces the child to
witness sexual acts
o Suddenly refuses to participate in physical activities
o Exhibits unusual sexual knowledge or behaviour
o Yeast or urinary infections
o Torn or bloody underclothes

Emotional Abuse
o Emotional abuse is a pattern of harmful interactions between the parent and child
such as criticizing, belittling, rejecting, or withholding love resulting in impaired
psychological growth and development
o Eating issues (anorexia, bulimia, etc.)
o Nervous habits (tics, washing hands, biting nails, extreme anxiety, etc.)
o Cruel behaviour using physical force or words to hurt another camper, staff
member or animal.
o Lack of emotional attachment to parent
Neglect
o Neglect is the failure of a parent or guardian to provide for a childs basic (i.e., food,
shelter, supervision, and clothing), educational or medical needs. Neglect may exist
because of the refusal to provide or because the family does not have the financial
means to provide for their child
o Begs or steals food or money
o Poor hygiene
o Unsuitable clothing
o Low height and weight average
o Excessive absences
o Chronic hunger
o Assuming adult responsibilities (caring for younger siblings, cooking all meals, etc.)
Reporting of Child Abuse
Approximately 3 million reports of possible maltreatment are made to child protective
service agencies each year. In calendar year 2010, these referrals concerned the welfare of
approximately 5 million children. The actual incidence of abuse and neglect is estimated to
the three times greater than the number reported to authorities.
Child abuse is reported on average every 10 seconds. An estimated 879,000 victims of
maltreatment were substantiated after investigation by child protective service agencies in
2010.
Ways to prevent Child Abuse
Be a nurturing parent : Being a nurturing parent involves meeting basic physical
needs as well as consistently seeking to meet your childrens emotional needs.
Get involved : Tell other people about child abuse resources in your community and
services. Share resources like this blog and dont shy away from speaking out against
child abuse and neglect.
Promote programs in school : Help the schools in your community be the source of
education about child abuse, not just math, English and science
Volunteer at a local child abuse prevention program : Another way to get involved in
the fight against child abuse is to volunteer your time. Childhelp has local
chapters and Wings programs which raise funds and awareness for Childhelp
programs.
Proposed Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS)
GOI has proposed to combine its existing different child protection schemes under one
integrated scheme It aims to provide for care and protection of all the children in conflict
with law and children in need of care and protection.
It proposes to involve steps to:
o Strengthen families and prevent them from breakup and children becoming
homeless and without care and protection.
o Provide support to children already outside the mainstream, beginning from
emergency outreach services to final rehabilitation with their families/ society

Case Study
The 11-month-old boy Hemishkumar alias Happy, is still in trauma after being allegedly
physical beat repeatedly by his care-taker for last two days. The incident had came to light,
after the parent reviewed the CCTV cameras installed in in their house via their mobile
phone
