CRITICAL REFLECTION
For this semester, we have been assigned to produce mind maps follow
by preparing teaching and learning materials, task 3 was on producing a
checklist and lastly critical reflection for the subject TSL 3113 DEVELOPING
AND USING RESOURCES FOR THE PRIMARY ESL CLASSROOM. Before
proceed to the next part, I would like to thank my goup members Nareshkumar
A/L Jeeva, Aiman B Rosli and Fakhruddin B. Mohamad for helping, designing
and discussing strategy and all of the things related to the assignment. I also
want to thank Mrs. Suhartina Bt. Md Yusop for giving us the opportunity,
cooperation and also guidance in finishing the assignment.
Teaching materials as we all know is the weapon for the teacher during
the lesson. In fact, childrens mind is mostly based on games and fun thing.
Without the teaching materials, the class will be dull and the students may lost
their interest since the teacher only uses textbook for the students activity. At
the same time, the teacher should also consider that their teaching material is
not only for students fun and interest but also help the students to assess the
knowledge easier. In relation, not all of the teaching materials are suitable for
students use. Some of them may not suitable for the lesson in term of content
or the format. Most of trained teacher will definitely alter, adapt and also
elaborate the material in order to make it useable in the classroom.
Throughout the assignment, I have to go up and down to find the
information and I have learn so many things whether it is stated on the paper
or not. For our teaching material, I and my group have agreed to choose video
as our teaching material. In choosing the material, I have learned on how to
measure if it is suitable for the students or not. We make a criteria list consist
of learners level, interest, culture and so on. It is really hard to choose a
material which can fulfill our entire material criteria list since some of them
maybe does not suit our students level and the culture might confused the

students during the lesson and so on. At last we managed to choose a
childrens song entitled If youre Happy and You Know It which we think the
best song for the students. Besides, I also have better understanding on
principles of material selection and adaptation. I first think this assignment was
really easy. I am false and I had lots of reading on articles, discussion with my
group members and experiments during this second pract icum on the teaching
materials in order to produce the mind maps based on the articles that we have
chose. In addition, I also learn on how to produce a checklist for the teaching
material that is going to be used during the lesson. Basically, the checklist is
like the evaluation on the result of the teaching material that is used in the
classroom. Producing the checklist is not a simple work. We must put suitable
fields of criteria that are going to be look into before we can use it. Later, the
checklist will be used by the teacher for them to make improvement for their
teaching material.
Apart from that, there are also few weaknesses during completing the
assignment. I think most of my friends face the same problem on time
management since we are having our 2
nd
practicum besides of other work, task
and other personal stuff. Besides, finding the right articles to the assignment is
one of the other obstacles in finishing the assignment. I did also try to find it in
the books at the library. Still, I cannot f ind the right article to be used for the
assignment. I relation, not have extra articles since the right articles was really
hard to find the right articles besides since I need to prepare for my practicum
observation.
On the other hands, there are few suggestion that I can make in order to
overcome my problems. I should manage my time more systematically so that I
can work more on finding the articles and finish the assignment. Furthermore, I
should refer to more resource like the journal and language magazine in order
to find the articles for the assignment. Lastly, working management with my
group members should be check in order to prevent working mess.

In conclusion, practicum is the best time to implement what we as a
teacher trainee learn in class. Besides, we can make the experiment and see
the result that reflects our lesson and materials. This is because, material that
we produce sometimes cannot be used for the students even when we think it
is really simple to them. Besides, I also learn on how to produce a good
teaching material considering few factors for the students before producing
materials and the checklist that I can refer after the class. Above all of that, the
experiences have also taught me on how to manage my time more effi cient as
we are still in our practicum.
