5 Major Senses

1. Sense of Sight
It is the capability of our eyes to focus and detect images of visible
light on photoreceptors in the retina of each eye that generates
electrical nerve impulses for varying colors, hues, and brightness
(Wikipedia, 2014)
2. Sense of Hearing
Is the sense by which we distinguish sounds or sound perception
3. Sense of Taste
It refers to the capability to detect the taste of substances such as
food, certain minerals, and poisons, etc. (Wikipedia, 2014)
4. Sense of Smell
Sense by which we distinguish odors, the various kinds of which
convey different impressions to the mind.
5. Sense of Touch
Sense by which we distinguish the different qualities of bodies:such
as heat and cold, hardness and softness, roughness and smoothness,
figure, solidity, motion, and extension.

Possible Defects in each Senses
1. Sense of Sight Disorders
Myopia- eyeball is too long causing difficulty seeing distant objects
than near objects.
Hyperopia- eyeball is too short causing difficulty seeing near objects
than distant objects
Presbyopia- the eye exhibits a progressively diminished ability to
focus on near objects
Astigmatism- causes blurred vision because of the irregular shape of
the cornea or curvature of the lens.
Diplopia- a condition in which the patient complains of being able to
see two images of a single object.
Color Blindness- the inability to differentiate between certain shades
of color.
Amblyopia- a condition in which there is reduced vision in one of the
eyes because of incomplete development of the optic nerve pathway
from that eye to the brain and as a result the brain receives blurred
images from one eye.
Strabismus- condition in which the eyes do not align in the same
direction. It is also called crossed eyes or squint.


2. Sense of Hearing Disorders
Microtia meaning small ear is a congenital deformity of the outer
ear.
Hearing Impairment- a general term for an abnormal condition in which
a person experiences a deterioration or loss of hearing.
3. Sense of Taste Disorders
Ageusia- inability to detect sweetness, sourness, bitterness, saltiness,
and umami
Hypogeusia- reduced ability to taste things (to taste sweet, sour,
bitter, or salty substances).
Dysgeusia- is a distortion of the sense of taste.
Parageusia- medical term for a bad taste in the mouth.
Hypergeusia- a taste disorder where the sense is abnormally
heightened.
4. Sense of Smell Disorders
Anosmia is the inability to smell
Dysosmia when things smell different from memory or expectation
Hyperosmia an abnormally acute sense of smell.
Hyposmia decreased ability to smell
Olfactory Reference Syndrome psychological disorder which
causes the patient to imagine he or she has strong body odor
Parosmia when things smell worse than they should
Phantosmia "hallucinated smell," often unpleasant in nature



5. Sense of Touch Disorders
Chicken Pox- a highly contagious disease caused by primary infection
with varicella zoster virus (VZV).
Sunburn- a form of radiation burn that affects living tissue, such as
skin, that results from an overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation,
commonly from the sun.
Psoriasis- chronic skin condition that is marked by red and sometimes
scaly patches of skin.
Warts- is a small, rough growth resembling a cauliflower or a solid
blister.
Keloids- is the formation of a type of scar which, depending on its
maturity, is composed mainly of either type III (early) or type I (late)
collagen.
