Assignment AN1: identify the feedback topology of the "a" network. Identify the amplifier type and state which transfer gain ("A f") is stabilized by the feedback. Dc bias conditions in the circuit must be determined using Thevenin's theorem.

Assignment AN1
1. In the cascode amplifier circuit in Figure 1, V 6 V and k 10 R ; k 7 , 4 R ; k 9 , 3 R ; k 22 R ; k 11 R ; k 33 R ; k 1 R CC L C E 3 B 2 B 1 B sig = = = = = = = =
The BJTs have V 7 , 0 V ; 100 BE = = ; pF. 2 C and MHz 200 f ; V ob T A = = = Take mV 25 V T = .
1.1 Neglecting base currents, determine the dc bias conditions in the circuit. Assume reactances of C 1 , C 2 , C B , C E are negligible. Draw a mid-band small-signal equivalent circuit, determine suitable models for the BJTs, hence determine the mid-band voltage gains in o V v v A and sig o sig V v v A . Figure 1
1.2 Modify the equivalent circuit and BJT models as appropriate for high-frequency analysis, and hence determine the high-frequency 3dB cutoff frequency f H .
1.3 Briefly explain why it would not be appropriate to use Thvenins theorem to simplify the base bias circuits when determining the dc bias conditions in the circuit (as in question 1.1).
2. A simple amplifier circuit with a differential input stage (Q 1 , Q 2 ), a follower output stage (Q 3 ), and negative feedback provided by R F & R 1 is shown in Figure 2. The dc bias current sources (I T
& I 3 ) may be taken to be ideal. [See note below]
2.1 Identify the feedback topology of this amplifier, clearly explaining how you made this identification, hence identify the amplifier type and state which transfer gain ("A f ") is stabilized by this feedback. Figure 2
2.2 Draw an ac small-signal equivalent circuit of the "A" network without feedback but including the loading effects of the feedback network, explaining how you determined the relevant loading effects. From this circuit determine an equation for the feedback factor in terms of the components shown.
2.3 For this amplifier, assuming the open-loop gain is large, determine an approximate expression for the voltage gain s o v V V A = with negative feedback.
Note: This amplifier circuit is the MOSFET equivalent of the circuit in Exercise 5 (Feedback Amplifiers). Ensure you have done this exercise.
