Do you ever wonder why it is getting hot all of a sudden?

Or where the smoke from your car

goes to? I can tell you one thing the cars smoke goes into the air we breathe as pollution.
The rest of the smoke that we dont breathe goes into the atmosphere. That is why I believe
global warming is harmful to our environment because it is decimating our plant and animal
population, melting our icecaps, which provokes a rise in sea level, and causing other
widespread damages; however there are solutions to this world wide problem.
The main cause of global warming is the human population.
There are many scientific reasons for global warming but first Im going to give you an
overview of it.
When the human population became urbanized and started to build factories and when the
owners needed a place to put them so they cut trees and other natural plant life. They build
the factories and once the factory is up and running they started to give off a lot of carbon
dioxide, CO2.
Now for the scientific version of the story.
Plants produce oxygen by absorbing CO2. This process is called photosynthesis. Humans do
a similar process but its called cellular respiration. Instead of producing oxygen we produce
CO2 and absorb oxygen. These two cycles are never ending, humans need plants to survive
and plants need humans to survive.
When the human population started to ruin this cycle by destroying plant life CO2
concentration went up. The greenhouse effect causes gases to stay in the troposphere and
heat up the Earth.
This is why the global warming is happening.

The harm is that icecaps and icebergs are melting. Icebergs have a very big concentration
of fresh water and when they melt and mix with the salt water the fresh water is no good.
This is bad for us because one of the necessary materials we need to survive is water.

Another harmful effect of global warming is that because of the CO2 the ozone layer is
depleting. When the ozone started reducing UV rays started coming in and causing a lot of
skin cancer and other UV radiation diseases.

Global warming also causes animal death. Some animals, like owls, live in trees other
animals, insects mostly, live on plants, on the roots, on leaves or other parts of a plant. It
also affects bigger animals, like panthers, that eat deer, which eat plants. This is called a
food chain and when the producer, plants, is not there to give nutrients to other animals
everything dies.

There is solution to all of these worldwide problems. One way to fix it is by recycling empty
bottles, glass containers, plastic, or paper. This will cause factories to produce less which
will make them pollute less or not at all. Another way we can stop pollution is by using
hybrid cars. They are energy efficient and the way they are energy efficient is by them
running on gasoline and hydrogen fuel. It conserves energy and pollutes less because most
of the time it runs on hydrogen with some gasoline.

Do you see the overwhelming effects of global warming? It has a very long cause and effect
sequence. When humans started to make factories plant life depleted which in cause caused
many years of misfortune. Animals and humans started to decimate because of malnutrition
and UV radiation. This was cause by a high concentration of CO2 making a hole in the
ozone.
As you can see global warming is still a very big problem that needs to be fixed.

Causes
Global Warming is caused by many things. The causes are split up into two groups, man-made or
anthropogenic causes, and natural causes.

Natural Causes
Natural causes are causes created by nature. One natural cause is a release of methane gas from arctic
tundra and wetlands. Methane is a greenhouse gas. A greenhouse gas is a gas that traps heat in the
earth's atmosphere. Another natural cause is that the earth goes through a cycle of climate change. This
climate change usually lasts about 40,000 years.

Man-made Causes
Man-made causes probably do the most damage. There are many man-made causes. Pollution is one of
the biggest man-made problems. Pollution comes in many shapes and sizes. Burning fossil fuels is one
thing that causes pollution. Fossil fuels are fuels made of organic matter such as coal, or oil. When fossil
fuels are burned they give off a green house gas called CO2. Also mining coal and oil allows methane to
escape. How does it escape? Methane is naturally in the ground. When coal or oil is mined you have to
dig up the earth a little. When you dig up the fossil fuels you dig up the methane as well.

Another major man-made cause of Global Warming is population. More people means more food, and
more methods of transportation, right? That means more methane because there will be more burning of
fossil fuels, and more agriculture. Now your probably thinking, "Wait a minute, you said agriculture is
going to be damaged by Global Warming, but now you're saying agriculture is going to help cause Global
Warming?" Well, have you ever been in a barn filled with animals and you smell something terrible?
You're smelling methane. Another source of methane is manure. Because more food is needed we have
to raise food. Animals like cows are a source of food which means more manure and methane. Another
problem with the increasing population is transportation. More people means more cars, and more cars
means more pollution. Also, many people have more than one car.

Since CO2 contributes to global warming, the increase in population makes the problem worse because
we breathe out CO2. Also, the trees that convert our CO2 to oxygen are being demolished because we're
using the land that we cut the trees down from as property for our homes and buildings. We are not
replacing the trees (an important part of our eco system), so we are constantly taking advantage of our
natural resources and giving nothing back in return.
1. Polar ice caps melting
The ice caps melting is a four-pronged danger.
First, it will raise sea levels. There are 5,773,000 cubic miles of water in ice caps, glaciers, and permanent
snow. According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, if all glaciers melted today the seas would
rise about 230 feet.
Second, melting ice caps will throw the global ecosystem out of balance. The ice caps are fresh water,
and when they melt they will desalinate the ocean, or in plain English - make it less salty. The
desalinization of the gulf current will screw up ocean currents, which regulate temperatures. The stream
shutdown or irregularity would cool the area around north-east America and Western Europe.
Third, temperature rises and changing landscapes in the artic circle will endanger several species of
animals. Only the most adaptable will survive.

Fourth, global warming could snowball with the ice caps gone. Ice caps are white, and reflect sunlight,
much of which is relected back into space, further cooling Earth. If the ice caps melt, the only reflector is
the ocean. Darker colors absorb sunlight, further warming the Earth.

2. Economic consequences
Most of the effects of anthropogenic global warming wont be good. And these effects spell one thing for
the countries of the world: economic consequences. Hurricanes cause do billions of dollars in damage,
diseases cost money to treat and control and conflicts exacerbate all of these.

3. Increased probability and intensity of droughts and heat waves

4. Warmer waters and more hurricanes
As the temperature of oceans rises, so will the probability of more frequent and stronger hurricanes. We
saw in this in 2004 and 2005.
5. Spread of disease
As northern countries warm, disease carrying insects migrate north, bringing plague and disease with
them. Indeed some scientists believe that in some countries thanks to global warming, malaria has not
been fully eradicated.
Source(s):
In Indian context, the impact of global warming is a matter of grave concern. As is well known, India
is mainly an agricultural country and agriculture here is gamble of the monsoon, e.g. largely
depending on rainfall. Though it is to affect the whole country, the worst likely impact would be on
central and northern India which is high-yielding parts of the country. These are the regions which
produce the largest agricultural yield. The rise in atmospheric temperature and fall in rain would
naturally result in decline in crop production. Moreover, it would have great effect on biodiversity as
well.
The growing concerns over global temperatures have led to the nations, states, corporations and
individuals to draw out a plan of action to avert the situation. As a result the worlds primary
international agreement on combating global warming was reached in Kyoto in 1997 which came to
be known as Kyoto Protocol. However, ten years have passed; the situation does not appear to be
very changed. It seems that the member countries are not very serious about its devastating effects.
In addition, forestation can be of great help in this regard. Planting more trees and reducing timber
cuts worldwide will help restore the imbalance. Secondly, we must follow on environmental policy of
reduce, reuse, recycle, i.e. promoting the reuse of anything. Thirdly, the use of fuel-efficient
vehicles should be promoted as these vehicles have lower emissions of harmful gases. Fourthly,
every individual should be aware of the importance of the protecting environment. Besides, eco-
friendly technologies must be promoted, and must be substituted with the technologies which cause
great emission of global warming gases. Public awareness campaign can be of great help in this
regard because unless each and every individual is aware only governments effect cannot bring
desired difference.
Global warming; what effect does it have on the environment? Well global warming can
have many effects, and the effects are definitely not good! Global warming can cause many
things like mess with the sea level, affect the weather and so on. Global warming effects the
environment in bad ways, and if it is not at least attempted to be stopped, it is only going to
get worse.

One effect global warming has on the environment is it affects sea level. Global warming
raises the overall temperature and cause glaciers and ice caps to melt, which makes the
water expand. When this happens, sea levels tend to rise more rapidly than normal.
According to the Third Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change, the sea level is expected to rise as much as 88 centimeters in the next century.

Ocean acidification is also affected by global warming. Carbon dioxide is one of the
greenhouse gases that cause global warming. So due to the rise in sea levels and
precipitation, the carbon dioxide is mixed more with sea water. According to a report in the
Open Democracy, this is a major concern for ocean life, especially coral.

Most importantly, global warming effects weather. Global warming can affected the weather
by making the climate hot or cold, or making it switch back and forth. Global warming is
also believe to be the reason for so many bad hurricanes and earthquakes.

Although global warming is bad, there are ways to try and prevent it. Just by driving less
and taking a bike or walking can help prevent global warming. Cutting down on your
garbage can also help, just by buying fewer packaged materials can help prevent global
warming. Most importantly, recycling can help. Buying recycled paper products and
recycling as much as possible, is a great way to prevent global warming.

So many things can be effected just by global warming, but it can also be prevented. Global
warming is considered to be the main problem with our environment. So whether global
warming is real or not, lets try to prevent it, because the environment is important!
To blame humans or not to blame humans for global warming, that is the question. Global
warming is an increase in temperature world wide. Report has noted, 11 out of the last 12
years have ranked among the warmest on record. CNN has stated that temperature
changes have been notice over the last 50 years, due to human activities. 90-99% of daily
human activities cause global warming. With this factor scientists have predicted the
temperature will increase 3.2 to 7.1 degrees Fahrenheit. Yes humans are to blame for global
warming because of population growth, deforestation, and the use of non-environmentally
safe products. This world wide issue must be addressed to everyone!

First, the increase in population has had a major affect on Global warming. With more
population comes the use of more cars, boats, planes, etc. These powered vehicles cause
more C02to enter the air. Everyone is acknowledging that we need to make a change in our
way of living. More cars and more planes are pouring enormous amounts of C02 into the
atmosphere. Most global increases rare due to increases in carbon dioxide from fossil
fuels, says CNN. This is true; did you know that aviation causes 3.5% of global warming?
This seems like a little amount but, if you think of all the times planes depart and land per
day it really adds up. Then, when there is traffic peoples car engines could be burning fuel
for at least over an hour. They can use up to600 million gallons of gas, while just sitting in
traffic. This is very common in many cities, world wide. I found that the amount of fossil
fuels that are burned during traffic translates to 7.5 million tons of carbon dioxide. Vehicles
with poor gas mileage contribute even more than regular cars do. Imagine all the
transportation that occurs throughout the day keeps increasing as the population does.
There will be so much carbon dioxide emissions that temperatures will increase by many
degrees. We need to minimize our use of these items in order for our economy to avoid
suffering. If we dont change our actions it could change our lives forever!

Second, deforestation has had and still continues to have a tremendous affect on global
warming. Deforestation is the process in which too many trees are being cut down. An
example of this is in the Amazon Rainforest. Within twenty-six years it went from a dense
thick layer of green forest, to an empty looking area. When we are cutting down trees the
process of photosynthesis can not take place. Therefore large amounts of carbon dioxide are
left in the air, and there is less oxygen. These C02 bonds interfere with the C03 in the
ozone. Global warming is greatly affected by deforestation due to the increase in green
house gases it causes. Millions of acres are being cut down each day. In fact, these acres
happen to be the size of Italy. When these trees have fallen or have been burned carbon
dioxide enters the air. Trees 50% carbon dioxide, so when deforestation takes place the
carbon dioxide is released. This most prominent green house gas makes up 50% of every
tree, so when multiple trees are cut down, it could be released at least twenty-five times.
Because of the recent facts youve heard deforestation is the second major principle that
causes global warming. It accounts for 25% of carbon dioxide emissions. With our actions
we are losing temperate forests. Temperate forests are good forests to keep, around
because they serve a big part in reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. These
forests absorb two billion tons of carbon dioxide on their own. Who knew that, that a
productive job, which brings in many products, could be so much trouble?

Lastly, we use non-environmentally safe products. We use things such as hairsprays, which
are aerosols. Aerosols have been forming holes in the ozone layer for years. We need to
use more environmentally friendly technologies, acknowledges Bush. An example of this is
a hybrid car. A hybrid car runs mainly on sunlight, not oil. This way it is not burning tons of
fossil fuels. It was the first time Bush had discussed this matter in a State of the Union
address, so it must be getting serious. Bush had to confront this serious challenge of global
changing climate due to using products like aerosols. Aerosols that are sprayed into the air
travel upward and contribute to those broken O2 and O3 bonds. These products contain a
fluorocarbon, which are green house gases. They make up 5% of the worlds green house
gas emissions. These gases are a major cause of temperature increase. Not only do they
raise the temperature, but they also keep infrared light from leaving the earth. So while the
sea are melting we are developing skin cancer from those rays. Not only is it aerosol cans,
but refrigerators, and air conditioners contain fluorocarbons too. With a few sprays here,
and one or two there the temperatures are increasing.
On the other hand, some people argue global warming is due to solar variability. The
definition of solar variability basically how hot the sun is. People argue that this can not be
controlled, which is true, but there is more support to why it doesnt make a difference. For
example, scientists have only been tracking this for thirty years. This is not a very long time
to be studying this factor. Compared to something like plate tectonics, which have been
studied for at least fifty-seven years. Besides this many articles state that solar variability
only plays a MINOR role in global warming. The rest of the factors are due to human
activities, which have been studied so well that there is exact evidence of what it is doing,
and why it is our fault. All these facts come with more than a paragraph of support too.
During the time when scientists were studying global warming solar variability was not well
determined yet. It was almost like a theory to the scientists at first. This means that
scientists cant fully support that solar variability is a cause of global warming. Now they
may have facts, but are they as strong as the ones on human activities? Absolutely not,
human activity facts are stronger and more detailed. People may think that they are
defending a strong side in this issue, but really it is the weakest side of them all.
In conclusion humans are to blame for global warming because of population growth,
deforestation, and the use of non-environmentally safe products. We have support from
many articles and even the president that we need to do something about our actions.
Whether its changing the products we use, or reducing the amount of fossil fuels we burn,
its up to us to fix the problem we created. I encourage you to take a stand and address the
problem, to let everyone know we made our planet like this, and its our job to fix it!

RE DRAFT

Introduction:

Global warming is one of the most controversial science issues of the 21st century,
challenging the very structure of our global society. The problem is that global warming
is not just a scientific concern, but encompasses economics, sociology, geopolitics,
local politics, and individuals choice of lifestyle. Global warming is caused by the
massive increase of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, in the atmosphere,
resulting from the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. There is clear evidence that
we have already elevated concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide to their highest
level for the last half million years and maybe even longer. Scientists believe that this is
causing the Earth to warm faster than at any other time during, at the very least, the
past one thousand years .

GLOBAL WARMING is a very serious threat with very long standing effects to human
beings affecting the entire world. It is harmful to the environment because it kills our
plant and animal population, melting our icecaps, which results in a rise in sea level,
and causing other widespread damages.

The main cause of global warming is the human population.

In the name of urbanization and modernization, factories were built using forest lands,
cutting trees and other natural plant life. These factories, while running, emit a lot of
carbon dioxide. The presence of carbon dioxide also gets concentrated, with the cutting
down of trees. We all know that human beings take in oxygen and breathe out carbon
dioxide, while plants take in carbon dioxide and let out oxygen. These two cycles are
never ending. With the destruction of trees on a large scale, this cycle is ruined,
resulting in concentration of carbon dioxide. This, known as the greenhouse effect,
causes gases to stay in the troposphere and heat up the Earth. This is termed as global
warming.

The effects of global warming is very wide and far reaching.
The icecaps and icebergs melt resulting in an increase of water levels in seas.
Another harmful effect of global warming is that because of the CO2 the ozone layer is
depleting. When the ozone started reducing, UV rays started coming in causing skin
cancer and other UV radiation diseases.

Global warming also causes animal death. Some animals, like owls, live in trees other
animals, insects mostly, live on plants, on the roots, on leaves or other parts of a plant.
It also affects bigger animals, like panthers, lions, tigers, etc. These wild animals
depend on other herbivorous animals in the forests. With their food availability coming
down or getting completely destroyed, these herbivorous animals are unable to get their
food and die. As a chain reaction the wild animals also do not get any food for
themselves and are destroyed. This is called a food chain and when the producer,
plants, is not there to give nutrients to other animals, everything dies.
Natural causes are causes created by nature. One natural cause is a release of
methane gas from arctic tundra and wetlands. Methane is a greenhouse gas. A
greenhouse gas is a gas that traps heat in the earth's atmosphere. Another natural
cause is that the earth goes through a cycle of climate change. This climate change
usually lasts about 40,000 years.

3. Increased probability and intensity of droughts and heat waves

4. Warmer waters and more hurricanes
As the temperature of oceans rises, so will the probability of more frequent and stronger
hurricanes, which we experienced in 2004 and 2005.
5. Spread of disease. Another major man-made cause of Global Warming is
population. More people means more food, and more methods of transportation. That
means more methane because there will be more burning of fossil fuels, and more
agriculture. Another source of methane is manure. Because more food is needed we
have to raise food. Animals like cows are a source of food which means more manure
and methane. Another problem with the increasing population is transportation. More
people means more cars, and more cars means more pollution.

Since carbon dioxide contributes to global warming, the increase in population makes

Whether its changing the products we use, or reducing the amount of fossil fuels we
burn, its up to us to fix the problem we created. I encourage you to take a stand and
address the problem, to let everyone know we made our planet like this, and its our job
to fix it!

Global warming is one of the most controversial science issues of
the 21st century, challenging the very structure of our global society.
The problem is that global warming is not just a scientific concern,
but encompasses economics, sociology, geopolitics, local politics,
and individuals choice of lifestyle. Global warming is caused by the
massive increase of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, in
the atmosphere, resulting from the burning of fossil fuels and
deforestation. There is clear evidence that we have already elevated
concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide to their highest level
for the last half million years and maybe even longer. Scientists
believe that this is causing the Earth to warm faster than at any
other time during, at the very least, the past one thousand years.
Global warming is a slow steady rise in Earth's surface
temperature.[1] Temperatures today are 0.74 C (1.33 F) higher than
150 years ago.[2]
The basic cause seems to be a rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide,
as predicted by Svante Arrhenius a hundred years ago. When people
use fossil fuels like coal and oil, this adds carbon dioxide to the air.
When people cut down the Earth's forests (deforestation), this means
less carbon dioxide is taken out of the atmosphere by plants.
If the Earth's temperature becomes hotter the sea level will also
become higher. This is partly because water expands when it gets
warmer. It is also partly because warm temperatures make glaciers
melt. The sea level rise may cause coastal areas to flood. Weather
patterns, including where and how much rain or snow there is, will
change. Deserts will probably increase in size. Colder areas will
warm up faster than warm areas. Strong storms may become more
likely and farming may not make as much food. These effects will not
be the same everywhere. The changes from one area to another are
not well known.
People in government and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change (IPCC) have talked about global warming. They do not agree
on what to do about it. Some things that could reduce warming are to
burn less fossil fuels, adapt to any temperature changes, or try to
change the Earth to reduce warming. The Kyoto Protocol tries to
reduce pollution from the burning of fossil fuels. Most governments
have agreed to it. Some people in government think nothing should
change.
Climate change has happened many times over the history of the
Earth, including the coming and going of ice ages. For more recent
centuries, we have more details.
Since the 1800s, people have recorded the daily temperature. By
about 1850, there were enough places measuring temperature so
that scientists could know the global average temperature. From
1920 to 1940, the temperature got warmer. From 1940 to 1970, the
temperature got slightly cooler. From 1970 to today, the average
temperature for the world has increased by about 0.6 0.2 C.[3]
Starting in 1979, satellites started measuring the temperature of the
Earth.
Before 1850, there were not enough temperature measurements for
us to know how warm or cold it was. Climatolgists use proxy
measurements to try to figure out past temperatures before there
were thermometers. This means measuring things that change when
it gets colder or warmer. One way is to cut into a tree and measure
how far apart the growth rings are. Trees that live a long time can
give us an idea of how temperature and rain changed while it was
alive.
For most of the past 2000 years the temperature didn't change much.
There were some times where the temperatures were a little warmer
or cooler. One of the most famous warm times was the Medieval
Warm Period and one of the most famous cool times was the Little
Ice Age. Other proxy measurements like the temperature measured
in deep holes mostly agree with the tree rings. Tree rings and bore
holes can only help scientists work out the temperature until about
1000 years ago. Ice cores are also used to find out the temperature
back to about half a million years ago.
The greenhouse effect[change | edit source]
Main page: Greenhouse effect

Fossil fuel related CO2 emissions compared to five IPCC scenarios.
The dips are related to global recessions.
Coal-burning power plants, car exhausts, factory smokestacks, and
other man-made waste gas vents give off about 23 billion tons of
carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the Earth's
atmosphere each year. The amount of CO2 in the air is about 31%
more than it was around 1750. About three-quarters of the CO2 that
people have put in the air during the past 20 years are due to burning
fossil fuel like coal or oil. The rest mostly comes from changes in how
land is used, like cutting down trees.[4]
The sun gets a little bit hotter and colder every 11 years. This is
called the 11-year sunspot cycle. The change is so small that
scientists can barely measure how it affects the temperature of the
Earth. If the sun was causing the Earth to warm up, it would warm
both the surface and high up in the air. But the air in the upper
stratosphere is actually getting colder, so scientists don't think
changes in the sun have much effect.
Dust and dirt[change | edit source]
Dust and dirt in the air come from natural sources such as volcanos,
erosion and meteoric dust. People also add to it. Some of this dirt is
large, so it falls out within a few hours. Some is so small that it could
stay in the air for years. This big dirt is still very small. It's about the
width of a human hair. The big dirt does not stay in the air for years
though because rain hits it and brings it to the surface. It actually only
stays in the air for about 7 days. But this is still a long time, and can
cause changes in the temperature of the Earth. Dust can hang in the
air for years. Some people try to stop global warming, usually by
burning less fossil fuel. Many people have tried to get countries to
emit less greenhouse gases. The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997.
It was meant to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere to below their levels in 1990. However, this has not
happened. Carbon dioxide levels today are the highest they have
been since the start of the Industrial Revolution.
Energy conservation is used to burn less fossil fuel. People can also
use energy sources that don't burn fuel, or can prevent the carbon
dioxide from getting out.
People can also change how they live because of any changes that
global warming will bring. For example, they can go to places where
the weather is better, or build walls around cities to keep flood water
out. Like the preventive measures, these things cost money, and rich
people and rich countries will be able to change more easily than the
poor. Geoengineering is also seen by some as one climate change
mitigation response.
