1 About this Document
1.1 Detailed Scope
This manual is intended for designers working on CATIA V5. It takes into account the situation
of not fully CATIA V5 processes between each Natco.
(Legacy tools, Visualisation Tools, Transfer between different CAD Tools).
Use of colours during design phase is integrated inside this document. Colours used for the
DMU Visualization could be different and are described inside the AM2037 Module 2.
To cover all aircraft projects we have local adaptations to detail use of ranges and
organisation of colours.
This document is fully compliant with AM2232 Module 2 Cad layers organisation and must be
applied in accordance with the following AM(s):
AM2259 3D Modelling Rules for CATIA V5
AM5012 CATIA V5 Assembly Rules
AM2264 Drawing with CATIA V5
AM2037 Module 2 DMU Review with CATIA V5

2 Layer Applicability
2.1 Introduction
CATIA V5 functionality enables designers to manage their own design and data organisation
without layering use. Nevertheless, the use of layers is necessary for Master Model
identification, DMU Visualization, Data transfer and Manufacturing processes.
The objective is to reduce designers' time spent on unnecessary layering.
What is a Main Model:
PRODUCT

MAI N MODEL
Design Principle & Frontier Model Result of study
SAM & Definition Models Last Solid of the part
Master Geometry & Master Lining Reference Geometry
2.2 Layers Distribution by Master Model
MANDATORY LAYERS FOR MAI N MODELS

Use of all other layers is free: Layer none, Layers 0 to 80, Layers 111 to 120, Layers 246 to
999.

2.3 Main Domains Organisation
The following table, extracted from AM2232 Module 2 Cad layers organisation, must be
applied for master models main domains.
This table details the use of range from 121 to 245 for DP, SAM and Definition Models.
Note also that equipment models are included inside Systems SAM or Definition Models.

3 Layer Management
3.1 For a CATPart
In case of solid definition, only the Part-body has to be on a layer.
In case of wire-frame or surface definition (MG, DP, FM), the Open-body grouping
some elements might be on the appropriate layer and elements inside the Open-
body may be on layer none.
Use of layers forbidden for Part Number property level.
3.2 For a CATProduct
Use of layers forbidden for CATProduct and CATPart Part Number property levels.
Example for 3.1 & 3.2 chapter:

Forbidden Levels
3.3 For a CATDrawing
No mandatory layers.
3.4 Menu Access
The layer tool bar is not activated by default inside the "Design Part" workbench.
To include it, go to the right tool bar (red surrounding), click with the MB3 and select "Graphic
Properties" (layering menu in blue).

4 Colours Applicability
We have no AIRBUS common rules about colours to be used by designers. So, the use of
colours for Master Models inside a CATPart is globally free unless local organisation is
needed. In this case designers will find directives in local documents (see local
adaptations).
As mentioned in the scope of this document, tools exist to set colours to the whole DMU
according to ATA code. In this case colour information is stored inside products, not parts.
For DMU Reviews, refer to AM2037 Module 2.

6 Checks to be Performed Before Storing
Layer information is computed to extract geometry for visualisation tools and CAD transfer.
However it is mandatory before storing to have only Main Models in show mode. All others
entities, must be in no show mode.
