The Obligation of Dutifulness to Parents


Khutbah Topic
His Eminence Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais May Allah protect him delivered this
Friday Khutbah entitled The Obligation of utifulne!! to "a#ent!! in "hich he dealt "ith
the obli#atory act and the merits o$ duti$ulness to parents% He supported his ar#ument "ith
verses $rom the Holy &ur'(n and "ith hadiths $rom the )oble Sunnah* cautionin# a#ainst the
perils o$ disobeyin# parents%

E+clusive praise be to Allah% ,ur -ord. /e sho" #ratitude to 0ou* ask $or 0our assistance*
entreat 0ou to $or#ive our sins* and return in repentance unto 0ou% 1lory and praise be to
0ou. 0ou commanded us to "orship no deity save 0ou* and to treat our parents bene$icently%

7 bear "itness that there is no deity "orthy o$ "orship e+cept Allah "ith no associate% He
has rendered believers' hearts replete "ith pro$use bene$action* mercy* and compassion% 7 also
bear "itness that our 8rophet and beloved Muhammad is Allah's Servant and Messen#er9 he
is the most esteemed Messen#er honoured "ith a divine messa#e and the best o$ the human
race as person% May Allah send His Salat 31race* Honours* Mercy5 and 8eace upon him* his
$amily* his early :ompanions "ho en;oyed the divine bounty o$ brotherly bonds and
en#a#ed in mutual assistance and promotion o$ piety as "ell as bene$action his tabin 3the
contemporaries o$ the :ompanions o$ the 8rophet <May Allahs salat and Peace be
upon him] a$ter his death5* and all those "ho $ollo" them ri#hteously in pursuit o$ Allah's
bliss$ul #ardens and satis$action%

See! shelter ith $llah against afflictions in ambush lying.

7n this event$ul period o$ history "here incidents and happenin#s over"helm people's
very e+istence* people are en#a#ed in a rush $or materialistic #ains* vie"ers break into a
#allop to "atch satellite channels "ith #reat "onderment9 everybody is rushin# to"ards the
techniBues o$ multimedia communication9 every sin#le individual is en#ul$ed in one's sphere
o$ interest and petty concerns o$ li$e9 li$e a$$airs succumb to the con$oundin# turbulent sea
"aves% Amidst all this* there emer#es an e+tremely crucial issue% 7t is a cause to "hich one
"ould never hesitate to devote one's li$e* "ithout re#rettin# any "aste o$ vain e$$ort in its
pursuit% Even i$ one spent hisCher "hole li$e to serve such a cause* the result "ould only be
$urther success* victory* "isdom* lucidity* purer innermost nature* and better reputation in the
"hole community% 7t is an issue almost #enerally i#nored and there$ore needs to be reiterated
throu#h repeated reminders% 7t is indubitably a bi# issue% May Allah protect you. 7t is namely
the issue o$ duti$ulness to parents and treatin# them kindly durin# their li$etime and a$ter
death% Duti$ulness to parents is prompted by the desire to establish intimate kinship ties* to
sho" devotion* to anticipate bliss$ul destiny in the Herea$ter* and to seek $elicitous divine
recompense%

To %im are graces" blessings" praise and glory!

7$ human nature is instinctively inclined to love "hoever treats it kindly* then the most
bene$icent people "ho deserve #ood treatment and a$$ection should be our revered parents%
Duti$ulness to parents is a reli#ious precept and a commendable conduct to be necessarily
observed by Muslims% 7t is a strict observance to be $ollo"ed as a mandatory individual
commitment that tolerates neither e+cuse nor ne#li#ence% As a matter o$ $act* reli#ion and
Shari(* common sense* #allantry and nobility* #race$ulness and #enerosity* #ratitude and
humaneness* hi#h ethical standards and #ood manners* etiBuette and morals all such criteria

support the necessity to sincerely sho" duti$ulness vis-=-vis one's parents% 4his moral
recommendation has been recurrently stated in Almi#hty Allah's Holy Eook on various
occasions and in di$$erent verses% Allah 3Be He !tolled5 says6 [Ad *e have
e+oied o %a #o be du#i'ul ad !id #o his "are#s&&&] <Al-Ah>B($6
?FA He eBually says 3"lory to Him56 [Ad *e have e+oied o %a #o be

7n interpretin# this verse* 7mam Al-4>abarH May Allah have mercy on him said* That is
to say" $llah )en*oined on man to observe all commendable types of treatment" and %is
command regarding the treatment of man!ind at large is only part of hat %e ordered
children to observe hen it comes to the type of treatment they should reserve for their
parents. This is hy $llah says" #[&&&ad s"ea! ,ood #o "eo"le [i&e& e+oi
ri,h#eousess ad 'orbid evil( ad say #he #ru#h abou# -uha%%ad

means only partial aspects of good treatment are reserved for people in general%!

Duti$ulness to parents is a divine precept totally observed by prophets and messen#ers*
and adhered to by pious and devout people% 7n the Holy 2erse* Allah 3"lory to Him5 reports
the statement by J+s, 3Kesus :hrist5 peace be upon him6 [1Ad du#i'ul #o %y
%o#her( ad %ade %e o# arro,a#( ubles#&0] <Maryam6 ILA* alon# "ith
the description o$ 0ah>y( 7bn Makariy( peace be upon both o$ them6 [Ad du#i'ul
#owards his "are#s( ad he was ei#her a arro,a# or
disobedie# 2#o Allh or #o his "are#s3&] <Maryam6 ?NA
7n their prayers* pious believers constantly beseech Allah in their prayers to send them His
blessin#s both durin# their li$etime and as a re"ard in the Herea$ter% Allah 3"lory Be to
Him5 mentions the prayer o$ )oah peace be upon him6 [1-y 4ord! For,ive %e(
ad %y "are#s( ad hi% who e#ers %y ho%e as a believer( ad

upon him "hen he supplicated Allah6 [1Our 4ord! For,ive %e ad %y

-utifulness to and respect of one.s parents is a must"
/e0t only to faith in and orship of $llah.
They gave birth to us and raised us as little children"
They" then" deserve ultimate respect.

8arents are the very ;oy and adornment o$ li$e* its radiant hope and intrinsic value% 7n their
company* su$$erin# is so$tened* sadness $ades a"ay* and su$$erin#s never last thanks to their
sincere abundant prayers%

7n 8rophet Muhammad's 3May Allahs salat and Peace be upon him5 revered
tradition* duti$ulness to parents is closely associated "ith the per$ormance o$ 3con#re#ational5
prayer "hich represents the pillar o$ 7slam% Even more si#ni$icantly* it is #iven priority over
*ihad kno"in# that *ihad is perceived in 7slam as the camel's hump 3in re$erence to its vital
importance $or Muslims5% 7n the t"o Sah 1 ih 1 2oo!s by 7mam Muslim and 7mam Eukhari* it is
reported that 7bn Mass'Gd May Allah be pleased "ith him said* 3 as!ed &rophet
4uhammad 5May Allahs salat and Peace be upon him67 )#hich act is most
favoured by $llah8 %e said" 9Prayer on time.: 3 as!ed again" )Then" hat comes ne0t8 %e
said" )Dutifulness to parents. So" 3 said" )#hat comes ne0t8 )Jihad in the cause of Allah"
he replied.!
4hus* duti$ulness to parents ranks $irst even be$ore ;ihad and military action in the
battle$ield to combat the enemy% Further evidence is eBually derived $rom the t"o Sah 1 ih 1
2oo!s by 7mam Muslim and 7mam Eukhari "here a man is reported to have come to 8rophet
Muhammad 3May Allahs salat and Peace be upon him5 to take permission $or
#oin# to ;ihad% 4he 8rophet asked him* Are your parents alive?: 4he man ans"ered* Yes%!
4he 8rophet said* So, your jihad is to be dutiful to them.! 4his is because duti$ulness to
parents combines the most re$ined values and the most bene$icial $orms o$ love%

Due to the ma#ni$icence o$ parents' ri#hts and the #randeur o$ their kind acts* Allah 3the
"reat and Almighty5 has correlated duti$ulness to parents "ith obedience to Him 3"lory
to Him5% Allah 3Blessed be He5 says6 [*orshi" Allh ad +oi oe wi#h

e!tolled5 also says6 [Ad your 4ord has de/reed #ha# you worshi" oe

7bn Abb(s May Allah be pleased "ith him said* Three ;ur,nic verses ere revealed
in parallel ith three others.! 4hen he mentioned6 [ Ad *e have e+oied o

not sho" #ratitude to his parents is considered as un#rate$ul to Allah 3"lory and Ma$esty

7n the same vein* 7bn ,mar 3May Allah be pleased "ith both o$ them5 once met a man
"ho "as carryin# his mother on his back "hile per$ormin# circumambulation around the
<,bah% 4he man asked 7bn ,mar* O 3bn Omar" do you thin! 3 have retuned her maternal
favours in all gratitudeP! 7bn ,mar said* You havent even rearded a single sigh of hers
5i.e. during delivery6%! <)arrated by 7mam Eukhari in his book entitled $l=$dab $l=4ufradA

-o your best to be dutiful to your parents" for it is
$ mandatory observance both in private and in public

Duti$ulness to parents becomes all the more a moral imperative and a reli#ious observance
"hose per$ormance is vital* especially "hen parents su$$er $rom certain diseases or $rom old
a#e% 4his duti$ulness continues even a$ter their death* "hich secures their children's hi#her
ranks in the Herea$ter% Also* 7mam Ahmed reported in his 4usnad on the authority o$ Abu
Qsaid Al-S(edi May Allah be pleased "ith him that6 $ man of the $nsar 5the &rophets
supporters in 4edina6 said" )O 4essenger of $llah! 3s there anything 3 can do to sho
dutifulness to my parents after their death8 %e said" )Yes; their funeral prayer, asin! for
divine for!iveness to them, implementin! their "ills and obli!ations, bein! !ood to
relatives "hose inship is mediated throu!h them, and entertainin! their friends%!

Abdullah 7bn Dinar narrated on the authority o$ Abdullah 7bn ,mar May Allah be
pleased "ith both o$ them that he met a Eedouin on his "ay to Makkah9 so* Abdullah 7bn
,mar #reeted the man* asked him to mount his o"n donkey* and #ave him a turban he "as
"earin# himsel$% 7bn Dinar said* #e told Omar7 )4ay $llah save you! 2edouins can be
easily contented ith to!en gifts%' $bdullah 3bn Omar replied" )This mans father used to be a
close friend of Omar 3bn $l=<hattabs" and 3 heard &rophet 4uhammad 5May Allahs
salat and Peace be upon him6 say7 9#he most re"ardin! form of dutifulness to
parents is "hen someone eeps in touch "ith his father$s close friends.% <)arrated by 7mam

Duti$ulness to parents is a deeply-rooted duty in reli#ion and an authentic obli#ation to be
per$ormed by children vis-=-vis their parents% 7t is insurmountable* inalienable* and resists
ad;ournment% 7t is incumbent upon sons and dau#hters to observe it both in times o$ ;oviality
and a$$liction% 0ou are actually bound to sho" duti$ulness to your parents throu#hout your
li$e cycles* re#ardless o$ "hether your parents blame or "arn you out o$ concern $or mendin#
your manners% Remember ho" many times they o$$ered you sincere prayers* "ishin# you
success secretly and publicly% 4hus* sho"in# duti$ulness to them is your duty* and treatin#
them properly is your personal responsibility% 4he Holy &ur'(nic verse reads as $ollo"s6

7n the t"o Sah 1 ih 1 2oo!s by 7mam Muslim and 7mam Eukhari* Asm( Eint AbR Eakr May
Allah be pleased "ith her narrated6 4y mother once visited me hen she as still a pagan
polytheist. 3t as during the &rophets lifetime 5May Allahs Salat and Peace be
upon him6. So" 3 as!ed the 4essenger of $llah 5May Allahs Salat and Peace be
upon him6 for his opinion. 3 said" )4y mother voluntarily came to visit me' shall 3 !eep
contact ith my mother8 %e said" )Yes" indeed! <eep contact ith your mother.: <An a#reed-
upon hadith* i%e% reported by both 7mam Muslim and 7mam EukhariA 4hat "as the case "hen
the mother "as a polytheist% /hat about "hen she "as a MuslimP

?ven in case they strive to coerce you into polytheism"
Treat them politely" and obey them e0cept in disobedience to $llah.
$s! $llah to have mercy on them
$nd endo them ith profuse favours.
$s! %im to guide their hearts to 3slam"
$nd to reard them generously and beneficently.

/e do $ind e+emplary behaviour and eloBuent e+pression in the tradition o$ our Salaf
3earlier model #eneration o$ Muslims and contemporaries o$ 8rophet Muhammad <May
Allahs Salat and Peace be upon himA and his companions5% )arrated AlSuhri May
Allah have mercy on his soul6 $l=%assan 3bn $li did not use to eat ith his mother" although
he shoed e0emplary dutifulness to her. #hen he as as!ed about the reason" he said" )3
dont ant to eat ith her for fear that some of the food might appeal to her eyes" and that 3
un!noingly eat hat attracted her eyes' in that case 3 ould have disobeyed her.:
/hen in the presence o$ t"o men* Abu Hurairah May Allah be pleased "ith him asked
one o$ them6 93s this man a relative of yours8: The man ansered" 9%e is called so and so
5his father6.: Then" $bu %urairah replied" 9-ont refer to your father or call him by his
name! So" dont say" )You" so and so' but rather call him by his !inship relation. You say"
)@ather or -ad.:
4hus* Abu Hurairah May Allah be pleased "ith him considered such behaviour a $orm
o$ disobedience to parents% 4his is an indication o$ ho" respect$ul and "ell-bred children
should be "ith their parents% For instance* "henever Abu Hurairah May Allah be pleased
"ith him intended to leave home* he "ould stop by his mother's door and say* %ello
5$llahs peace" grace" and blessing be upon you6 4om!! She "ould reply* $llahs peace"
grace" and blessing be upon you* son! He "ould add* 94ay $llah send %is mercy onto you as
you reared me hen 3 as a child.: 4hen* she "ould reply* 4ay $llah send %is mercy onto
you as you are dutiful to me as a gro=up. Abu Hurairah "ould do the same upon returnin#
home%

Allah is 1reat. Allah is 1reat. Ho" splendid such duti$ulness is and ho" #reat such
manners are. Ey Allah* this duti$ulness to parents is more precious than #old itsel$ as it is
rendered in such a shinin# and radiant $orm that is so typical o$ our 7slamic civiliSation and
the hi#h moral standards o$ our immaculate reli#ion9 a reli#ion that has reached the hi#hest
peak o$ morals by $osterin# the values o$ mercy* duti$ulness* kindness* and moderation% 7t is a
reli#ion that can by no means be compared "ith present-day materialistic civiliSation in terms
o$ its position vis-=-vis the $amily in #eneral and the parents in particular and ho" the latter
are o$ten abandoned to nursin# homes "hile their sponsors lead a lavish li$e%
4hen* look at the sharp contrast bet"een this kind o$ duti$ulness and those heart-breakin#
instances o$ disobedience to parents today* "hich have #one as $ar as patricide in such
desperate acts o$ $aithlessness marked "ith dis#race* lack o$ ma#nanimity and sense o$
honour%
4hose "hose emotions #o scarce* conscience "ithers a"ay* and hearts turn hard 3"ith
respect to their parents5 are the ones "ho are bankrupt indeed6 0ou may ima#ine one o$ their
parents "antin# to say 3the Sheikh Buotes $our lines o$ poetry paraphrased as $ollo"s56
3 have raised you as an infant and then a young man"

A Muslim may "ish $or nothin# more than the satis$action o$ his -ord 3May He be
e!tolled5* and this in itsel$ is tied up "ith the satis$action o$ one's parents% Abdullah 7bn
Amr 7bn Al Aas May Allah be pleased "ith both him and his $ather reported that the
8rophet 3May Allahs Salat and Peace be upon him5 said6 &#he pleasure of the
'ord lies in the pleasure of the parents. #he an!er of the 'ord lies in the an!er of the
parents.( <)arrated by Al-4irmidhi and authenticated by 7bn H> abb(n and Al-H> (kimA

2e dutiful to your parents and never say ords of disrespect to them
/or shout at them" but address them in terms of honour. 2e than!ful to them
$nd loer unto them the ing of submission and humility as mercy for both of them.

May Allah bless you and me by the 1reat &urT(n and bene$it us "ith the #uidance o$ the
Master o$ all the messen#ers. Havin# said this* 7 ask Allah to $or#ive me* you* our parents
and all Muslims $or all our sins. So ask Him $or $or#iveness and repent to Him* $or He is All-
For#ivin#* All-Merci$ul%

8raise be to Allah /ho has ordered us to be pious and duti$ul and "arned us a#ainst
alienation and disobedience to our parents% 7 bear "itness that there is no deity but Allah* "ith
no associate* a "itness "hereby 7 seek His satis$action and paradise% 7 also bear "itness that
our 8rophet* Muhammad* is the Servant and Messen#er o$ Allah% May Allah's Salat 31races*
Honours* Mercy5* 8eace and Elessin# be upon him* his $amily* his :ompanions and those
"ho $ollo"ed him as the day and ni#ht alternate.

,bserve taqa 3$ear o$ Allah5 , servants o$ Allah and obey His orders as He
commanded% Ee"are o$ sho"in# resentment and disobedience to your parents* $or Allah has
$orbidden that and "arned you a#ainst it% Abu Eakarah May Allah be pleased "ith him

reported that the Messen#er o$ Allah 3May Allahs Salat and Peace be upon him5
said6 &Should ) not inform you about the !ravest of the major sins? #e said" please do AO
4essenger of $llah! So he said7 *Ascribin! partners to Allah and disobeyin! one$s
parents$.% <A Hadith that is a#reed uponA
Abu Hurairah May Allah be pleased "ith him reported that the 8rophet 3May Allahs
Salat and Peace be upon him5 said6 &'et him be humbled into dust; let him be
humbled into dust he "ho sees either of his parents durin! their old a!e or he sees both of
them, but he does not enter Paradise.% <)arrated by MuslimA
4hus* those "ho estran#e their parents in pursuit o$ their o"n interests and "hims may
take "arnin#% 4hey must then lo"er the J"in#' o$ submission to them and be e+tensively
duti$ul to them%
, Servants o$ the Merci$ul.
Remember ho" a"$ul it $eels to lose one's relatives or beloved ones% 4he $eelin# is yet
much "orse "hen the deceased is one or both parents% -osin# one's parents is a serious
calamity% 7t is a disaster that strikes harder than a thorny stick% Such a disaster is enou#h to
make a solid structure collapse* to rava#e #ardens* contuse hearts and cause an#uish* sorro"
and sleeplessness% 4he only solace in such calamity is patience and true reliance on the
recompense and re"ard o$ Allah* 4he All-1enerous* 4he All-1ivin#%

/e belon# to Allah* and to Him "e shall return in submission to "hat He has ordained $or
us and in pursuit o$ His $or#iveness and satis$action% /hatever He takes or #ives a"ay is His
and everythin# "ith Him has a $i+ed term% /e must surrender to His /ill and predestination
and "illin#ly accept "hatever He decrees* #ood or bad%
/e praise Allah $or His Mercy in mendin# all breaka#e caused by such calamity and
openin# the doors o$ patience to this e$$ect% ,ur hearts certainly become saddened and our
eyes tear$ul "hen "e lose our parents% Ho"ever* "hat may di$$use all the #rie$ and sadness*
miti#ate the disaster and brin# com$ort are true condolences $rom a #enerous and humble
#uardian* a lovin# and carin# person 3"ho volunteers to beseech Allah to have mercy on the
deceased5 and com$ortin# "ords $rom a #rieved relative% May Allah Almi#hty re"ard all $or
"hatever they undertake in this respect. 4his is to be carried out in a uniBue spirit o$
solidarity and $raternity that is so typical o$ Muslims%
