This has led to the dev elop ment of alter nativ e c omp lex ing ag ents, b uilder s, thr eshold ag ents, c or r osion inhib itor s, and the like, w hic h ar e used instead of p r edominantly p hosp hor ous c on taining c omp ounds. Phosp hates c an b ind c alc ium and mag nesium ions, p r ov ide alkalinity , ac t as thr eshold ag ents, and p r otec t alkaline sensitiv e metals suc h as aluminum and alu minum c ontaining alloy s. Other c or r osion inhib itor s inc lude silic ates, suc h as, sodium silic ate. Sodium silic ate has a tendenc y to b eg in p r e c ip itating f r om aq ueous solution at a p H b elow 1 1, thus r educ ing its ef f ec tiv eness to p r ev ent c or r osion of the c ontac ted sur f ac es w hen used in c leaning solutions hav ing a low er p H. A dditionally , w hen allow ed to dr y on a sur f ac e silic ates f or m ? lms and/ or sp ots w hic h ar e v isib le and themselv es ar e v er y dif ? c ult to r emov e. The deg r ee of har dness of the solid c ast c omp osition c an r ang e f r om that of a f used solid b loc k, w hic h is r elativ ely dense and har d similar to c onc r ete, to a c onsis tenc y c har ac ter iz ed as b eing malleab le and sp ong e-like, simi lar to c aulking mater ial.
