Instructions:
Using the following links
http://www.saddleworth.oldham.sch.uk/science/simulations/waterweed.htm
http://www.biologycorner.com/worksheets/ waterweed_sim.html
Choose one factor which effects the rate of photosynthesis and design and carry out an
investigation proving your hypothesis.
You can choose from
1. Colour of light
2. Light intensity
3. CO2 concentration
You must first complete part 1 before moving on to carry out your experiment and complete
part two.
For Part 2 record your data in tables and also graph your results.

All assignment must be handed in as hard copies by Thursday 5/01/2012

Part 1 : Introduction

Aim: to see if the concentration of a liquid effects Photosynthesis of a plant

within it

Hypothesis:

I believe that a lower concentration will cause the photosynthesis

to slow down, causing fewer bubbles to appear.

Theoretical Background:
Increasing the CO2 concentration will initially increase the rate of photosynthesis,
until other factors become limiting. On a graph of rate of photosynthesis (y-axis)
against concentration of CO2 (x-axis), the curve will rise, and then level off. At
high concentrations, CO2 can become toxic and the rate of photosynthesis may
fall.

Independent Variable: concentration of CO2 in a liquid

Dependent Variable: amount of bubbles created
Controlled Variables: volume of liquid; amount of light affecting the liquids;
amount of time spent counting the bubbles.

Equipment: stopwatch, beaker, liquid, light source.

Procedure:
We split the 4-person group in half, as to have two monitor the dependent variable
(counting the bubbles formed in a specific area), while the others wrote down our
results and timed us.
We then moved to the other test area and used the same method.

Part 3: Conclusion and Evaluation

Conclusion
I failed to prove my hypothesis correct, but it also could not be proven as incorrect as the results landed
equally as more concentration=More bubbles and Less concentration= More bubbles.
However, I can prove a link between the temperature and the rate of photosynthesis.

Evaluation
Many weaknesses exist in this experiment; such as that concentration decreases over time, the CO2 in the
liquid is replaced by oxygen or used up in the process of photosynthesis.

Also another error is that the person counting misses bubbles or counts incorrectly.
