Wilfrido Ma.

Guerrero

Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero was born in Ermita, Manila on January 22,
1911. He grew up in a wealthy family where they were not allowed to eat
with hands and speak Tagalog. He was around twelve or thirteen years old
when his favorite aunt, Maria Araceli discovered his writing ability because
he would write in scraps of paper and hide them in his drawer.
He wrote his first Spanish play entitled No Todo Es Risa when he
was fourteen years old. The play was staged in Ateneo a year later.
He became a reporter and proofreader of La Vanguardia, a Spanish
newspaper and a dramatic critic in Manila Tribune. He worked in Philippine
Films as a scripter. In 1947, he was appointed as the Dramatic Club
director of the University of the Philippines for sixteen years.

He had written over a hundred of plays, 41 were published. His plays
included Wanted; A Chaperone, Forever, Half an Hour in the Covent,
Frustrations, Condemned, In Unity, The Forsaken House, Three
Rats, Our Strange Ways, Deep in My Heart, and Perhaps. His
unpublished works were broadcast or staged all over the Philippines.

He was the Filipino writer to have a theater named after him, The
Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater of the University of the Philippines Diliman.
He was a recipient of three national awards, the Rizal Pro-Patria
Award (1961), the Araw ng Maynila Award(1969), and the Republic Cultural
Heritage Award(1972).

He was proclaimed as National Artist for Theater after two years of
his death.
