through the %orks o( creation' #ecause it is o( service' al#eit it is
e((ectively (orced into this hel!(ul activity. )evertheless' it is %illing
to #e o( service& other%ise it %ould not have #een assigned its
(unction.
*he %illingness to serve is the (irst condition (or constantly higher
develo!"ent. +n the hu"an stage' ho%ever' it is le(t u! to the
#eing again as to %hether or not it is lovingly active.
,is soul has reached a state o( "aturity that the greatest shackle'
the #ound %ill' can #e re!laced #y (ree %ill' #ut then he %ill no
longer #e (orced into a serving activity #ut "ust acco"!lish it o( his
o%n (ree %ill' %hich %ill su#se-uently result in the soul$s higher
develo!"ent again.
.nd there(ore this stage also holds a certain danger (or the hu"an
#eing' that is' (or his soul' i( it (ails' i( it does not use its (ree %ill (or
kind- hearted activity'
on account o( %hich God has arranged !eo!le$s li(e on earth such
that they %ill need each other' in order to !rovide the" %ith the
o!!ortunity to #e o( service to each other.
*his is truly not ar#itrarily arranged' and the various living
conditions serve the %ise !ur!ose o( "aking it easier (or a !erson
to #e o( service. .d"ittedly' circu"stances %ill (orce hi" to #e
hel!(ul' #ut he can nevertheless re(use or acco"!lish the %ork
reluctantly %hich' ho%ever' %ill #e /udged #y God accordingly and
%ill ha"!er the soul$s "aturing.
For only kind-hearted service %ill result in the soul$s degree o(
"aturity and release it (ro" its #ound state.
*o all intents and !ur!oses' hu"an li(e is also a li(e o( co"!ulsion
%hich takes !lace %ithin the (ra"e%ork o( natural la%s' so that the
hu"an #eing very (re-uently -uestions his (reedo" o( %ill. .nd yet
the hu"an #eing has "uch (reedo"' #ecause he can think' act and
%ant as he likes' and thus he can also in(ringe against the divine
order i( he has no control over his instincts and a#andons hi"sel( to
dark (orces.
*he inner #attle #et%een good and evil is le(t utterly u! to hi"sel('
and this %ill #e "ore or less di((icult (or hi" de!ending on %hether
he is lovingly active' thus' %hether he hel!s %ith love. Only his
voluntary kind-hearted services %ill actually "ake hi" a%are o( his
(reedo" o( %ill' (or only then %ill he recognise that he is #y no
"eans (orced into doing it' that he is /ust as entitled to the sa"e
(reedo" o( %ill i( he %ants to do the o!!osite.
.ll lack o( love increases the %ill to do"inate' %hereas every kind-
hearted action increases his inner instinct to serve. .nd i( this
hel!(ul activity is acco"!lished voluntarily and %ith love it %ill
"ake a !erson ha!!y'
%hereas serving under duress' that is' against his %ill' %ill
e0as!erate hi" and arouse his inner o#/ections. +n that case the
hu"an #eing is controlled #y the evil (orce %hich %ants to !revent
hi" (ro" redee"ing hi"sel(.
*his is %hy earthly li(e is a res!onsi#le one' #ecause so "any
o!!ortunities e0ist to #e o( kind-hearted service %hich ena#les the
soul to redee" itsel( and these o!!ortunities are not used
accordingly.
.nd the less !eo!le recognise and (ul(il their !ur!ose o( li(e the
"ore these o!!ortunities %ill increase .... in order to a%aken their
sense o( love in vie% o( their (ello% hu"an #eings$ i""ense
adversity and to encourage their hel!(ul activity.
