TOPIC:-
AEROSPACE MUSEUM (DELHI NEAR IGI AIRPORT)
MUSEUM FOR atmosphere of earth (aeronautics), surrounding space, aircrafts and
spacecraft is conceived to be an informal place centre for glorious and traditional
information and creation of public awareness on glorious tradition and culture of INDIAN
AIRFORCE. The museum proposes to undertake the task of communication and creating
public awareness
Through the potential medium of exhibits and EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES.
It provides an understanding of the diversity air-spaces, the factors
Responsible for their wellbeing, man's dependence upon aeronautical engineering and the
necessity to maintain our AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING and SPACE TOURISM free
from damage and
Destruction to ensure sustainable development.

REASON FOR THE SELECTION OF THE TOPIC :

It is the only museum in INDIA of international standards situated near IGI AIRPORT
which will create an opportunity to introduce a new landmark in the society.
Museum depicts the evolution of human race in the field of aerospace/aeronautical
engineering.
A large number of population is still not aware about the richness of Indian aeronautical
engineering and their glorious history.

SITE

Near IGI DOMESTIC AIRPORT on the connecting road to DWARKA.
The plot is located on the main road to the domestic Airport terminal and
further to Dwarka. The new road to Dwarka divides the site into two with the
larger portion towards the north-east. The predominantly gentle slope of this
part culminates in a sharply rising rocky area at the extreme north-east corner.

The plot is located on the main road to the domestic Airport terminal and further
to Dwarka. The new road to Dwarka divides the site into two with the larger
portion towards the north-east. The predominantly gentle slope of this part
culminates in a sharply rising rocky area at the extreme north-east corner.
We propose to locate bus and car parking and all other visitors facilities like
ticket counter, ATM, drivers restaurant, cloak rooms, on the smaller plot on the
south-west side of the new Dwarka road.

Architectural design concept:
By locating all the ancillary functions on the smaller plot on the south-west side,
the larger site towards the south of the Dwarka road is free for a complete
experiential museum of flight.

The visitor almost takes off from one side of the road using the escalator and the
travelator in the arched tube across the road, smoothly converts their motion into
a flight path leading to the museum.

The main museum building is conceived of as a 3-dimensional confluence of
people and aircrafts. Visitors arrive from one side using the travelators and
aircrafts from the other along the air strip which takes full advantage of the
natural slope of the land in that direction.

With an inversion of the normal experience, the visitors almost fly around the
stationary aircrafts with almost no reference to a stable ground level. This
inversion is extended to create an ambiguity between inside and outside with
the interior of the tube containing the travelators opening out into
monumental ellipsoid cavities on the east and west facades with real aircrafts
exploding out of them. Moreover at the lower level the landscape of the airstrip
extends inside the building enabling the creation of diverse natural settings for
the internal exhibits.

The image of the project is thus evocative of a giant bird cage containing frozen
yet fluid 3- dimensional motion trajectories of the aircrafts and people interacting
with each other.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:
To store/preserve the glorious tradition of INDIAN AIRFORCE.
To create awareness in general public about INDIAs rich aerospace
heritage.
To give a scope to tourism by reflecting the heritage of Indian aerospace.
To provide Indias infrastructure a new iconic building/landmark as per
international standards.
Rich AEROSPACE heritage of INDIA will be restored.

SCOPE:

The project has the scope of playing with the views and vistas of the
beautiful natural skyline as well manipulating and driving the visitors
psyche towards the conservation of spacecraft / aircraft and its historical
importance. Since the site is located in a typical tropical climate, it provides
for large scope of intervention in terms of use of MATERIAL, DESIGN
PHILOSOPHY, PLANNING AND EXECUTION.

LIMITATIONS :

As being near the to the IGI airport restriction of building height.
As a developing nation India has to advance it infrastructure which is the
biggest task to fulfil as an architect
As being the first aerospace museum, culture of INDIAN AIRFORCE
AND PATRIOTISM for the country should not go out of context.
Footfall near site and on site.

SPACE REQUIREMENTS:

Exhibition Areas, Administration, Dormitories, Educational Spaces,
Laboratories, Auditorium, Conference Rooms, 3D visuals space, aircraft
maintenance workshop.

CASE STUDIES:

Aerospace museum palam, New Delhi
