Games Will Drive Tourism, Boost Economy
The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan
Am Games are in a prime position to
boost the economy, build communities and
showcase Ontario internationally, following the province's additional investment of
up to $74 million for Games operations.
Ontario has identified savings in Games-related costs of $45 million to date. This
means that the increase in the overall investment is $29 million or 1.1 per cent of
the budget. In addition, the province will
hold back $30 million as TO2015 continues to pursue further revenue and partnership support.

forecasts $25 million in revenue shortfalls
and identified additional requirements totalling $49 million. The additional funding
will be applied to a number of elements,
including:

Making Ontario a leader in accessibility by providing, for the first time, live
broadcast of selected Parapan American
sports showcasing international athletes at
top-level competition

Creating a safer environment for

Half marathon winners and Ethiopian natives Lelisa Desisa and Mamitu
Daska congratulate each other today in Boston.
BOSTON Mamitu Daska and Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia have won the Boston Athletic
Association Half Marathon.

Daska established a new event record Sunday of 1:08:20.

Desisa earned his second consecutive B.A.A. Half Marathon victory in
1:01:38. He won last year's Boston Marathon
and B.A.A. Half Marathon.

The B.A.A. Half Marathon is the
third and final event of the 2014 B.A.A. Dis-

tance Medley, a three-race series combining

the B.A.A. 5K on April 19, the B.A.A. 10K
on June 22 and B.A.A. Half Marathon. More
than 2,000 of the half-marathon's entrants
were participants in the three races this year.

Speaking through a translator, Daska said she hoped to set a course record.

The 30-year-old Daska won
$40,000. She pledged to donate $5,000 to
The One Fund Boston in honor of the victims
of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Governor General Awards High Honor To An Ethiopian

with the Center for Employment and
Learning, the Multicultural Association
of Perth-Huron, he founded, and many
immigrant advocate group working to
integrate Canadas newest immigrants.

By Samuel Getachew
By the time Dr. Gezahegn Wordofa was
awarded the Caring Canadian Award from
Governor General David Johnston in late
September, he had achieved much that is
perhaps best left for the history books.
The Stratford resident and Ethiopian
native has not only earned a PHD from
the Russia, but has lived in Afghanistan,
Libya and all over Europe to name a few.
In Stratford, in less than four years, he
has served as a respected volunteer and
advocate for Canadas newest immigrants.
He has also been busy volunteering his
time and energy building a cultural mosaic

It is no wonder Governor General David

Johnston recently traveled to Kitchener
Waterloo to award 13 citizens, including
Dr. Wordofa with the Caring Awards.
Since its birth in 1995 by then Governor
General, the late Romeo LeBlanc, the
award recognizes volunteers who make
Canada a smarter and more caring nation.
Recipients exemplify the best of Canadian
character with their compassion here at
home and abroad.
For Dr. Wordofa, this is the latest of
recognition that includes the Newcomer
Champion Awards in 2012 from the
Province of Ontario. Upon awarding him
the award in 2012, the awardees were
described as groups that have made a
difference in their community and the

province through active citizenship and

engagement.

In Ethiopia, Dr. Wordofa lived in poverty

where he walked miles for school to later
earn full scholarships to Russia. For him,
even the most basic necessity of life such
as water was a luxury walking hours every
day to attain it. Likely he has not forgotten
those hardships and roots as he is currently
working on a project to bring clean water
to his place of birth by working with local
organizations.

The Inauguration Installation Address of New Lieutenant Governor

The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell,

29th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario

Premier, Chief Justice, Senator,
Executive Councillors, Members of Provincial
Parliament, First Nations, distinguished guests,
family and friends, mes chers amis:

As I begin this remarkable journey,
I want to thank each and every one of you
for your support and encouragement and for
sharing this day with me.

I am grateful to the Governor
General and the Prime Minister for entrusting
me with the responsibility of serving as the
29th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. I will be
sustained by their confidence and by their warm
welcomes. I accept the charge of representing
Her Majesty The Queen with humility, but
without hesitation.

Canadas particular constitutional
framework, our sovereign democracy, has
allowed our system of governance to evolve
in a peaceful and orderly manner. I have great
respect and affection for The Queen, recognizing
her dignity, strength and commitment to duty. I
pledge loyalty to the traditions of our collective
heritage, to acting with impartiality and
protecting the integrity of the Crown.

I also recognize that along with the
constitutional functions of Lieutenant Governor
come unique opportunities to celebrate the
achievements, large and small, of the citizens
of this province. We have such talented artists,
scientists, business people and educators
among the best in the world.

We commemorate the sacrifices
of our military and the dedication to duty of
those who provide essential services in our
communities. And we recognize and encourage
a healthy spirit of volunteerism, among young
and old alike, that makes our communities more
humane and compassionate.

There is yet another role that the
Lieutenant Governor plays in our society. We
encourage and support practical and tangible
initiatives that enable Ontarians to contribute
meaningfully to the life of this province.
I take the opportunity today to acknowledge
and recognize the selflessness, hard work and
dedication of my predecessors.

During the past few weeks, I have
had the opportunity to observe their impact first
hand, thanks to the generosity of David Onley in
providing a space for me in the office at the desk
of Ontarios first female Lieutenant Governor,
Pauline McGibbon. Indeed, how could I not
be inspired in preparing for my role sitting at
that desk, surrounded by the art and artifacts of
Ontarios viceregal history.

The focus of Mrs. McGibbon, and
of her successor Hilary Weston, on the rightful
place of women and girls in society, their
recognition of the importance of culture and
the arts in enriching our quality of life are ever
present.

I have much to learn from Hal

Jackmans deep interest in our history and the

events it behooves us to remember.

I take inspiration from Lincoln
Alexanders unique ability to bond with
young people and to rally us all in the struggle
against racism, and from Mr. Onleys profound
understanding of what happens when people
of all abilities are presented the opportunity to
achieve their full potential.

And just this past week, while joining
The Countess of Wessex, the Premier, Mrs.
Onley and a group of impressive women on
a visit to KI First Nation in Northern Ontario,
I had the privilege of witnessing firsthand
the cementing of lasting relationships with
Aboriginal peoples, relationships that were
encouraged by the initiatives of Mr. Bartleman
and Mr. Onley.

We left KI with some important
insights into the challenges the community
faces., We heard the knowledge of the Elders
and the hopes and dreams of Aboriginal youth
as they walk in two worlds. The continuing
reconciliation process will take our collective
courage.

I also want to recognize and applaud
the universal motivations of citizenship
expressed so well by our Governors General.
We are indeed a smart and caring nation.

Be assured that I will continue to
nurture the objectives my predecessors held
dear.

And on this day of commencement,
you deserve to know what I bring to this
position, what has shaped my values and vision.

As you may be able to tell from this
ceremonymy nephews Kyle and Cole, who
accompanied me in the landau, and my niece
Lauren, who has sung so beautifullyfamily
comes first.

In 1947, my mother and father had
the courage to choose this country, emigrating
from Northern Ireland to bring up their children
in rural Saskatchewan. They are here with me in
spirit.

My parents placed a very high value
on education and, although it was unspoken,
we always knew our path would be one of
continuous learning and ambition. Being a
child of the manse, the daughter of a teacher
and musician, and the eldest of eight siblings, I
learned the values of compassion, honesty and
respect.
I have also been blessed by an extended family
of incomparable friends, role models and
mentors, many of whom have travelled from
afar to be here with me today.

Place mattersand the Prairies have
a very special place in my heart. Saskatchewan
taught me the value of strong community and
nurtured a social consciousness, solidarity with
those in less fortunate situations. It is in the
very DNA of the place. It encouraged visions as
broad as the endless prairie sky.

And, as my journey has taken me
beyond the protective and sheltered existence of
small-town Saskatchewan life, I have been able
to draw upon a reservoir of strength, humour,
common sense and risk-taking that was surely
shaped by life on the Prairies.

But, like many Ontarians, although I
was born and raised elsewhere, I have chosen to
make this province my home. I have lived here
for almost half of my life.

I have had the great good fortune to
follow diverse paths of possibility on which I
continue to learn and grow, seizing moments
of opportunity, thanks to an education that
included the physical, behavioural and social

sciences, as well as the arts. From teaching,

through public service at the provincial, federal
and international levels, and ultimately to the
private sector, each chapter of my story has
expanded my horizons and taught me valuable
lessons.

This is not the day to elaborate on the
specifics of those experiences. Let me simply
say that there is no more noble profession than
that of the public service. It is something of
which I am very proud.

In seeking to engage citizens actively
in the public policy matters that impact their
lives I came to know more about our country,
listening to people in communities large and
small, travelling the length and breadth of
Canada and into the High Arctic. And certainly
my work with the United Nations influenced
and shaped my world view. The challenging
issues of our time require deep dialogue and
systemic thinking.

It was a privilege to see my own
country from a distance and to be reminded
of how very fortunate we are with our wealth
of natural resources, our relative stability and
our respect for each other as human beings.
Generosity of spirit, tolerance and commitment
to social justice must be nurtured.

We generally think of peace as
freedom from war. But we are not at peace
if there is not enough food to eat; if there is
inadequate shelter; if people are sick and cannot
get medical care; if they are impoverished and
cannot hope to escape povertys grip. In these
terms, millions of our fellow humans on this
planet cannot be said to be at peace.

I believe my personal history will
help me to serve Ontarians during my term as
Lieutenant Governor.

Canada is approaching its 150th
anniversary as a country. Undoubtedly, we will
be motivated to reflect on the important and
central role that this province has played in the
development of the nation. But perhaps we can
dare to also think about Ontario in the world.
How can Ontarians contribute to and succeed in
this changing and interconnected world?

Ontario has it all. This is a place and
time of opportunity.

From the sands of Point Pelee
to the shores of Hudson Bay and beyond,
Ontarians are blessed with an environment of
unparalleled, spectacular diversity, rich with life
and resources that have sustained generations.
We are also home to millions of people from
all walks of life and corners of the world, living
and working in every kind of community
from small and remote to large and urban.

Thanks to clean air, bountiful water
and space to grow, our prospects for sustaining a
flourishing society, culturally and economically,
are the envy of the world.

We are at the crossroads of migration,
attracting an optimism, commitment and
dedication that inspire each generation to
innovate, to build anew and to enrich the soil
and the fabric of Ontario society.

Ontarios future, like its past, is
anchored firmly in the world. And the world is
in Ontario. Just look around. One of our greatest
strengths is the people that we have drawn from
around the globe.

While we have so many gifts, we
also have challenges. I would highlight three in
particular and they do not stand alone. They
are interrelated.

Our first challenge is to ensure
responsible and inclusive prosperity so that
everyone has a meaningful opportunity to

participate. How do we harness a strong and

healthy innovation ecosystem with worldleading knowledge institutions in order to
fuel and secure dynamic economic vitality
and productivity for all? How do we develop
talented, diverse and highly skilled workforces?
How do we create opportunities for people,
particularly youth, and create jobs that provide
dignified work?

To meet this challenge, we must
engage more and more with the world: learn
about it, live in it, trade in it, work in it, and find
new ways of deepening connections between
Ontario and the world.

The second and related challenge
is the fragility of our planet our mutual
vulnerability. Our citizens understand that
a healthy environment is the foundation for
life on earth. Ontario is home to some of the
worlds best educational institutions, and we
are among the most scientifically literate people
in the world. Do we have the imagination and
determination to set ambitious goals, mobilize
our talents, our energies, and our environmental
resources in a shared vision of the future.

Finally, there is a third challenge. As
we protect our precious natural resources and
develop economically, can we ensure social
cohesion? We see growing conflict around the
world among different religious, ethnic, and
national communities exploding into violence.
Ontarians draw strength and encouragement
from the fact that we have tried to construct a
different kind of society: one that welcomes
diversity, is interested in the traditions of others,
and is based on fairness.

But we cannot afford to become
complacent. With changing demographics,
increasing poverty, homelessness and mental
health issues, we need to reach across divides,
get to know each other better, humanize one
another and create spacesboth public and
privatewhere we can work and play together.
Surely our goal must be to live with dignity in
just and sustainable communities.

We stand at an interesting moment in
history. The worlds most important problems
are Ontarios most fundamental challenges.
Ontario and the world are mirror images of one
another: to succeed at home, we must contribute
to the world, and to contribute to the world, we
must succeed at home. Each one enables the
other.

I know that it has become traditional
for incoming Lieutenant Governors to declare
during their investiture the themes that will
be their priorities. I offer a slightly different
approach.

I want to start by listening. In the first
months of my mandate, I will convene diverse
groups of Ontarians to hear your ideas about
Ontarios place in the world to deepen our
understanding about the connections. What can
we contribute and what we can learn from each
other to meet the global and local challenges we
face in common?

The aim will be to provide a forum
for reflection in the Lieutenant Governors
office, a safe space and a crucible for ideas. And
in time priority themes will emerge.

To achieve an Ontario that works for
everyone will require uncommon dedication,
creativity and energy. I invite Ontarians to join
me in this exciting, challenging journey into our
shared future.
Thank you. Merci. Miigwech.

Mayoral candidates help food bank

I declare you all winners, said Daily Bread

executive director Gail Nyberg.
The boxes the candidates were helping fill and
sort on Monday were going to Daily Breads
140 member agencies which include food banks
and missions.
Ford said it was important to pitch in at the food
bank and committed to helping raise funds for
Daily Bread as mayor with a gala fundraiser.
Im going to be there to help them when Im
mayor, he said.

Dave Thomas/Toronto Sun/QMI Agen
TORONTO - Torontos top three mayoral
candidates took a break from campaigning on
Thanksgiving Monday to help out at the Daily
Bread Food Bank.
Doug Ford, John Tory and Olivia Chow joined
volunteers at the food banks warehouse on
New Toronto St. to help sort food.
The Daily Bread Food Banks Thanksgiving
food drive is aiming to collect 200,000 pounds
of food by this Friday. Officials said they had
received about 148,000 pounds as of Monday.
We should all be thankful that we arent
turkeys today, Ford joked.
Before helping sort food, the three candidates
raced each other as they packed food into boxes.
Although he was the last one to show up at the
table for the friendly race, Ford managed to
pack his box the fastest while Chow came in
second and Tory finished last.

Later in the day, Ford had Thanksgiving dinner

with his campaign team and volunteers at his
headquarters in Etobicoke.
Boy, Im going to be doing a lot of canvassing
to work this turkey off, he said.
Tory who also volunteered at the Good
Shepherd Ministries on Monday said taking
part was a way to help those in need.
I think it is a reminder that there are people
who are not as fortunate as many others on
Thanksgiving Day even in Toronto, he said.
Chow who brought a bag full of cans from
her home to donate to the food drive said
the day was about celebrating the spirit of
generosity.
The spirit that said, What can we do with
each other, for each other, which is very much
part of what my campaign is about, she added.
I think with a good government, we need to
reduce the use of food banks by creating more
affordable housing, by creating good jobs and
better child care.

Interview With Trustee

Candidate Naser Kaid
By Samuel Getachew

of many board trustees that are wasting

public money in their pursuit of their own
ambition and narrow agenda. That should
be stopped and I am determined to clean
house.

Naser

Naser Kaid is a trustee candidate
for Toronto District School Board for Ward
18. The Ethiopian Canadian and father
of three is determined to bring new kinds
of inclusive leadership to the boards
management.

I had a chance to speak to the
determined and community leader as he
campaigned door to door.
Samuel

Congratulations on your efforts
and I wish you the best. Should you win,
what are some of the initiative you would
like you pursue.
Naser

Thank you Samuel and I are also
as always, grateful to Ato Teshome and
the TZTA family. If I am elected trustee,
I would like to bring a leadership that is
grassroots and includes diversity. Our ward
is an area with lots of immigrants but its
rare that anyone of us are involved in the
decision making process.

I want to also involve young
people early on to attain leadership
qualities and make them an agent of
change in the future. That is why I propose
to create a committee of advisory board for
them.

We have to also be conscious
of the budget of the school board. There
are many waste that needs to be curbed
and have us spent any available money
to our students instead. I am also aware

Samuel
Tell me a bit about yourself?
Naser

I was born in Limu, Jimma,
Ethiopia and came to Canada in 1989
via Italy. I completed high school as well
as university Carleton University in
computer math. I am a small business
owner and I have three wonderful children.
I volunteer in the community especially
in homework clubs and in environmental
initiatives. I am also dedicated to helping
Ethiopian-Canadian youth succeed in
Canada.
Samuel

Why is elected office the best way
to advocate for a better Toronto for all?
Naser

In Canada, since my arrival, I
have always been fascinated by electoral
politics. Its through politics, many
progressive initiatives have moved
forward. From Medicare to immigration
its only when we vote and participate and
not be mere observers our issues became
mainstream. It is only when we vote we
can have serious conversations within the
system instead of shouting from outside.

That is why is politics is still
attracted to me.

I hope Ethiopian Canadians will
participate in the upcoming election and be
kind enough to help me as well. I can be
reached at 647 704 5522.

Joint Statement by Ontario Health Minister

and Chief Medical Officer of Health on Ontario
Preparedness for Ebola Virus Disease

Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health

and Long-Term Care, and Dr. David
Mowat, Interim Chief Medical Officer
of Health, issued the following
statement on Ontario's preparedness
for Ebola virus disease in Ontario:

"We know that Ontarians may have

concerns related to the ongoing
challenges in West Africa and recent
events in the United States regarding
the spread of the Ebola virus.
Let us assure you that the safety of
Ontario's health care workers, patients
and the public are our top priority.
We are confident that Ontario is
prepared and ready to contain and treat
any potential case of Ebola virus in our
province -- protocols are in place and
we've seen the system work well in
Ontario hospitals.
With the experience and lessons learned
from the Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome (SARS) epidemic, our
health care facilities now have
sophisticated infection control systems
and procedures to protect health care
providers, patients and all Ontarians.
They are fully equipped to deal with
any potential cases of Ebola.
But all health care workers, especially
those providing care to patients,

must be safe and protected. This is

why we are working with health care
employers to ensure they are providing
appropriate training for their staff on
the proper use of personal protective
equipment and other occupational
health and safety measures. We are
also continuing to work with health
care workers and employers to further
strengthen protective measures and
ensure they're in place at all times.
Our health care workers are on the front
lines and it is times like these when we
are all reminded of how critical their
work is in protecting the public. We
want them to feel safe.
We will be reaching out to our health
care partners to ensure they have the
maximum protection possible and plan
to release revised guidelines by the end
of the week.
The government, in collaboration
with our health system partners, is
monitoring the Ebola situation and
is continually assessing our state of
readiness should a case of Ebola ever
occur in Ontario.
On behalf of both the ministry and
the government of Ontario, we would
like to thank our health care workers
for their selfless and tireless work on
behalf of all Ontarians."

The Toronto City Hall and how I see it

An exclusive conversation with the leading mayoral candidate John Tory.
By Thomas S. Saras

you have any strategy in place for this?

Mr. Thomas interviews with Mr Tory

I would like to thank you for taking the time out of your very busy
schedule for this interview.

Q. Mr. Tory what is your philosophy during

this election, how exactly do you see City Hall
in the future and what changes will you bring
in the future?
A. I think I see a City Hall that works better
for people and I think it starts with the council.
The council has been much divided for the last
number of years and I think it is time we took the
temperature down a bit. And I think this starts at
the top, I think it starts with the Mayor making
a much greater effort to work with the council
because you cannot get much done if you dont
have the councils support. I think it goes from
there to the rest of the city hall, the public
service and all the councilors deciding on a few
things that are really important to get done and
in my books that includes dealing with traffic
and transit focusing on taxes and spending and
making sure that we keep all of that done in a
responsible way, well managed way and jobs.
I think if we made significant progress on all
those things traffic, transit, taxes, spending and
jobs, people would be very happy. And if we
kept services, good quality services for people
and there is much more to be done, but I think if
you did really well at those things, to keep the
temperature down so the place is not divisive
and not chaotic I think people would be pretty
happy. I think that is the kind of City Hall that I
want, one that gets things done. I was with the
Chinese media, I dont think you were there, I
was with the Chinese Canadian Media and one
of them said to me if you can have three words
to describe the City Hall that you would run
say after a year, what those words would be. I
said getting things done. I think that is people
want more than anything else. If I could choose
three other words they would be bringing
people together, because I think the city needs
to be brought together after the last four years.
Q. Your opponents are accusing you of being
the son of a family of the plenty and that you
would not be able, to some extent, to serve a
city with this diversity, where many people
suffer daily trying to survive. What is your
answer on this?
A. I direct people often, when this comes up,
to my record as a private citizen. Forgetting

what I have said or what I have done being

a political candidate because the things that
people say, including those comments by my
opponents, is politically motivated. I said, well
what did John Tory do when John Tory was
a private citizen? When he could have given
his time to anything he wanted or just stayed
home and watch TV. What I did instead was
to have an incredible activist track record
as somebody who went to just about every
corner of this city, every community and did
all kinds of different things to help people
and try to understand what was at the root of
some of the challenges people faced, whether
it was kids with autism , or it was people who
are under housed in TCHC neighborhoods,
or kids who are unemployed or kids who are
dropping out of school or teenage girls who
are getting pregnant, or moms who are single
moms and have two jobs and cannot cope with
helping their kids with their homework. I have
been on behalf of organizations that are well
known, and will say that I was there, helping
a lot in those neighborhoods. It does not mean
I can change who I am, I cannot change who I
am, as I am who I am, but a part of who I am,
is a person who has for decades, not just for
a couple of months or a couple of years, but
for decades been involved in the community
as a volunteer trying to understand what the
challenges are and try and make them better,
make the situation better. I am happy to run on
that record, because you are who you are and if
you try and pretend you are someone else it is
pretty difficult to do. And I think the skills and
experience I have in business and in law will
help me be a better leader, a better mayor. And
that combined with my community experience
which I think is immensely beneficial to me
and will be beneficial for the people.
Q. there is a problem with the city and its public
housing structure, you know this, and everyone
knows this. Every day there is a crime in the
area where public housing exits. The present
day mayor probably cut all the services, there
is no security, the whole system is collapsing,
if not collapsed yet, then is collapsing and it
seems like no one from City Hall really cares
what happens because everyone in the City
thinks we need money to help the system. Do

Sponsorship of family members

Mr. Tancer

If you are Canadian citizen, or
a permanent resident, you can sponsor
certain relatives, to immigrate to
Canada. Examples of some relatives
are your wife/husband, common-law
partner, parents, and other eligible
relatives.

As a sponsor, you must be able
to support yourself, and your relative,
you are sponsoring, although there
are exceptions, to this rule, such as

sponsoring your spouse.

Also, you must make sure the
relative does not ask for financial help
from the government of Canada, such
as social assistance benefits.

When the sponsored relative is
a spouse, the permanent resident visa
has 2 years condition allocated to it, i.e.
spouse must live with the sponsor for 2
years, upon arriving in Canada. There
are some exceptions to this rule.

When the sponsored spouse
wants to divorce from the sponsor,
marry another foreign national, and
sponsor the new spouse, then this
sponsored spouse must wait 5 years
from arrival before doing this new
sponsorship, with the newly married
foreign national.
For Further information Call Mr. Joel
Tancer 416-850-9851 or refer to page 6
to look the ad.

A. Well, the first program that I have, that is in

my platform that I think will make the biggest
difference to the people who are living in the
Toronto Community Housing Neighborhoods,
of which you know are many, is to make sure that
people who are unemployed or underemployed
have jobs, good jobs. And I have a number
of ideas on that. This is in my platform. But
I have also talked frequently about taking
job opportunities out to those neighborhoods
because I think a lot of times people who live
out in those communities find themselves quite
isolated, they dont really know how to sort
of approach RBC or Ford or Bell about a job
because Its complicated, they will put their
resume into a website and they find they wont
hear from them ever again. So, I am a great
believer in job fairs and things like that, that
take job opportunities out to those communities
and because I think the biggest thing that will
help those communities is jobs for people who
are unemployed and underemployed. Secondly,
I think we have to repair the housing. I mean
repairing the housing is not just about a smart
business decision about something we own,
but its about the dignity and self-respect of
the people who live in that housing, I think
things will be better for kids and families in
the Toronto Community Housing Communities
if you fix the housing problem. And its one
of the reasons I talked about accelerating the
investment of money and fixing that housing,
so that we can fix it faster and having people
living in dignity faster. Thirdly, I have talked
quite a lot about programs. As you implied
and correctly so, the current administration
has looked for opportunities to criticize and
cut those programs that invested in kids. I look
at it exactly the opposite. I look at it and say
this is the best investment we can ever make.
Investing in kids in particular in helping them
with positive activities, positive role models,
help with their school work to stay in school,
these are the programs that are going to
maximize the chances of those kids staying
on the right path and end up not falling into
trouble and not ending up being victimized
in violence that is unrelated to good activities
and good expenditures at that time. So I talked
quite a lot about that and again my tract record
as a citizen indicates how committed I am to
those kinds of programs. So, I think those three
things plus I have talked often and again its
in my platform, about renewing all of these
communities and I think the kinds of renewals
we have seen, say at Regent Park, and every
community is different, but the kind of renewal
we saw at Regent Park where you kind of
got new mixed community housing but you
also have a lot of private sector jobs because
the new community attracted a Sobeys, Tim
Hortons and Rogers and an RBC and I forget
what else, but literally created hundreds of
jobs, hundreds of real jobs for people that were
drawn from those communities. I think if you
sort of start with jobs generally you then go to
repairing the housing, then go to the programs
for kids and families that are going to help lift

them up and keep them on the right track. And

you also then talk about the renewal physical
and social of those communities, I think it will
make a difference and that plus the continued
presence of community policing because there
is a need to have police in those communities if
you have police in those communities in a kind
of collegial responsible way you are less likely
to have people who are criminals.
Q. Any plans for the youth, especially for the
depressed areas.
A. Well, I have talked about the things I just
mentioned, but I will say for example that I have
specifically committed to doubling the number
of companies involved in Payee, which is the
citys most successful youth unemployment
program and I have talked about doubling the
number of companies in the first year that I am
in office and then we pick up on the programs
for the family and kids I mentioned a moment
ago. And I think the other things I mentioned,
the renewals of those communities is going
to obviously make it a better place to live for
those kids. And I would mention one more
thing, the things I believe very strongly include
mentorship, if all kids living in some of these
challenged neighborhoods could have a mentor
to kind of help them and stay focused on the
positives of being in school and so on, I think
this will even help the parents and I think that
will go a very long way. These are some of
the programs, mentoring programs that work
well and I will continue to support. I will not
criticize them or vote against them as the Fords
have done for example.
Q. a few years ago I had an interview with our
common friend, Mike Harris, I remembered
that he mentioned that Toronto has been built
in order to have almost a million residence and
now Toronto is home to close to five million
people and the streets still remain the same
with traffic congestions occurring anywhere,
according to him, from what I remember, he
said Tom we have to create new highways.
To build new avenues in order to make sure
that in the future Toronto will be able to serve
this many people. Now as the mayor Toronto,
you are entering in a historic time. Toronto is
expanding everywhere; new buildings, more
people, but the streets have remained the same.
Do you have any strategic program in place for
this or a plan?
A. Well, there is a big problem but I am not
sure if you look at a highly developed city like
Toronto that has been here for quite a while
there is not very much room left to build new
streets and new avenues and so what are you
left with. You are left with two challenges
both of which I have addressed very directly
in my platform. Number one is getting the
traffic moving on the streets that already exists
and I have 12 points in my platform that just
represent common sense that people have not
acted like enforcing the law with regards to

vehicles being parked where they should not be

in rush hour, stopping the kind of insensitive
construction schedule that kind of tears up
every street in the city at the same time and this
kind of thing. Including technology as well,
we are backward when it comes to technology
to move traffic in Toronto when in fact some
of the best technology in the world has been
in fact invented here and we have not bought
it and implemented it. So that is challenge
number one. Challenge number two is to build
more public transit. So that you give people an
option. The reason why a lot people drive their
cars and add to the traffic is because they have
no easy, convenient transit option available to
them either where they live or where they work.
One of the reasons why I am so committed to
smart track is because it actually on a citywide basis offers people a new transit option.
22 stations on a line that goes all the way from
Etobicoke to Scarborough and I think it will
make a huge difference not only in terms of
people who dont have to go on the crowded
Yonge Street subway, but also for people who
presently dont take transit at all and who will
take their car, but now will have a way to get
to Scarborough to work, or Markham, who
will have a way to get to downtown from
Scarborough, which presently have to get on a
couple of buses and a couple of trains. So I am
really optimistic that all the transit measures
that I propose, the centre piece being smart
track, plus getting the traffic moving, is going
to be the best we can to fix a problem that has
become very acute, I agree. But I just dont
think there are many opportunities to build new
roads. If you look at downtown in particular
the land is pretty much all taken up with the
existing roads and buildings and you dont
really have an option to build more roads. So
I think we have to address it with transit and
getting traffic moving on existing roads.
Q. Are you planning to place new tax on the
residence of Toronto?
A. No, what I did indicate is that I would keep
the property tax increases at or below the rate
of inflation, I think that we will look at tax
increases up to that level up at/or the below
inflation if we needed to make sure we can
keep the programs for the kids and families and
the programs to support public transit going
and going well but beyond that, I have not
indicated any plans to do anything with other
taxes or charges so the answer is no I have no
plans. My platform speaks to property taxation
by saying specifically that increases will be
keep at or below the rate of inflation.
Q. what about social programs, how will make
the social programs stronger?
A. Well, I think it is going to be by funding
them as best as we can and I did mention earlier
on, attacking waste in the government, so I
think that could free up some money because
people read and hear about projects that go way
over budgets. But in the end Thomas, I think
that we are going to have to do a really good
job of convincing the other governments that
they will have to step up in the most complex
city in Canada, it is not just the biggest and its
not just the economic engine, but its a complex
city because its so big it has a lot of different
social programs, it could be child care, it could
be poverty, it could be housing, it could be lack
of access to economic opportunities to jobs and
I think in this city because there are so many
people here and they are so diverse, there is
extra investment thats needed, its not because
people are playing favorites with Toronto its
simply because they are acknowledging the fact
that this city is different, it is more complicated
its problems are more complex because it is so
big and so diverse. And so I just think it will
be my job and an important part of my job that
I talk about all the time, is to go to those two
other governments and say look, you have to
step up because it is the country biggest city,
so much tax revenue comes out of this city to
your two governments, Federal and Provincial
and invest back into this city so that it stays
healthy and strong, which is in Canadas best
interest and in Ontarios best interest. I think
that the way you make sure that those social
programs not only remain good but get better
is by increased investment. Some could come
from the city through this modest inflation or
below tax increases, but more should come
from these two levels of government.
Thank you once again for your time.

Ethiopian Editor Convicted for Inciting Public With Articles

years, lawyer Ameha Mekonnen said. He

will be sentenced on Oct. 27.
Temesgen becomes the first journalist
whos accused and found guilty only for
what hes written in a newspaper, Ameha
said by phone today from Ethiopias capital, Addis Ababa. The evidence was only
his writing, nothing else.

Temesgen Desalegn, the former editor of Feteh

An Ethiopian editor is facing as many as

10 years in prison after being convicted of
inciting the public against the government
through his newspaper articles, his lawyer
said.
Temesgen Desalegn, the former editor of
Feteh, a defunct weekly newspaper, was
convicted yesterday by the Federal High
Court on charges that also included defaming the government and distorting public
opinion, after a case that lasted about two

Communications Minister Redwan Hussien said that the conviction was for articles Temesgen wrote for Feteh about two
years ago. The case concerned incitement
and misinforming the public, he said by
phone.
Ethiopia is Africas second-biggest jailer
of journalists after neighboring Eritrea as
of Dec. 2013, according to the New Yorkbased Committee to Protect Journalists.
Government officials say journalists are
not above the law and arent prosecuted

because of their profession.

Last week, an Ethiopian court sentenced
three magazine-owners in absentia to more
than three years imprisonment each on
charges of instigating the public to overthrow the government and fomenting ethnic tension. Temesgen was involved with
one of their publications, Fact, Ameha
said. The trial of six bloggers and three
journalists accused of links with outlawed
groups resumes tomorrow in Addis Ababa.
Temesgen was prosecuted under Article
257 of the countrys 2004 Criminal Code,
Ameha said. The provision relates to the
provocation and preparation of a range
of crimes against the state, according to
the law. An Ethiopian court banned Fetehs
distribution in July 2012 after it published
front-page stories on the illness of late
Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and protests
by Muslims in Addis Ababa.

Rout of The History

The history can be written and historians have

been storage in their mind. In any way, history
cannot be destroyed nor created. Indigent people in the world have unique history that implies
to their living and life style. Whether you live in
Alaska or Dankalian depression of Ethiopia and
Eritrea of East Africa, indigent people have in
common one thing. They are isolated from the
world by governments.
Afar people of East Africa shares common area
in the horn Africa. Mostly they are Sami nomads; they depend on their live stocks in the
hottest desert in the world. They live simple
life, and travel from one place to another after
their animal, mostly caws, camels, goats and
sheep. Afar people have been demarcated with-

By Ali Abdurahman

out their willing by Eritrea, Ethiopia and Djibouti government with help of colonial power,
and they cross boarders without knowing where
they fit. When they cross those lines, these governments are always harasses them and confiscates live stocks, some time imprison them for
several years.
They suffer with knowing what will happen to
them. Because, they only speak Afar Language,
they have to communicate with boarder agencies by finger signs.

After Djibouti got independent from French

colonial 1977, Afar people have been neglected
and forgotten by government. Today, Djibouti

is owned by single tribe who belongs to Somali

clan (Issa), all government infrastructures occupied by this tribe.
Afar people lives in poor neighborhoods that
have not receive services from Djibouti government.
Djibouti government for most of its life depends on foreign aids, and yet the spending of
the government is rising every year.
In Ethiopian, the structure of the government
is based on tribalism, nationalism and regionalism. The government of Ethiopia opposes any
democratic reform and depends on spinning on
its own people.

Acupuncture 'could treat

inflammation and save lives'

In Western medicine, the jury is still out on

whether acupuncture delivers health benefits. But now, a new study adds further
evidence of its worthiness, as scientists
have shown a direct connection between
acupuncture and physical mechanisms that
heal sepsis, a common condition in hospital intensive care units that springs from
infection and inflammation.

ing it a major cause of death.

The researchers, from Rutgers New Jersey

Medical School, published their results in
the journal Nature Medicine.

Although acupuncture has been practiced

for thousands of years in Eastern countries,
it is relatively new to Western medicine.
The technique works by stimulating specific points on the body with tiny needles
that penetrate the skin.

They note that sepsis causes around

250,000 deaths in the US each year, mak-

"But in many cases patients don't die because of the infection," says lead author
Luis Ulloa, an immunologist at Rutgers.
"They die because of the inflammatory
disorder they develop after the infection.
So we hoped to study how to control the
inflammatory disorder."

Researchers from this latest study say they

already knew that stimulating the vagus
nerve - a major nerve in the body - activates mechanisms in the body that reduce
inflammation.
As such, they tested whether electroacupuncture - a form of acupuncture that involves sending a small electric current
through the nerves - reduces inflammation
and organ injury in mice with sepsis. This
type of electrification has been approved
by the FDA for treating pain in humans.
