Overhead Conductor Types with Specifications

Aluminum conductor steel reinforced (ACSR) is normally used as overhead conductor.

According to [1] [2] types of ACSR are given in the following table 1.1.

Voltage Levels and ACSR Types:
According to [3] the selection of ACSR type is dependent on the
voltage levels. Different voltage levels are used in transmission and distribution lines. The
following table clarifies the selection of ACSR type for different voltage levels.

Power Transmission:
According to [4] , In Pakistan voltage levels are being used are given below.
Transmission Voltages: 33/66kv, 132kv, 220kv, 500kv.
Distribution Voltages: 11kv.
According to [4] the detailed information is given in the table 1.3.

According to [3] ,the power transmitted for any size of conductor depends on its
current carrying capacity and can be calculated from the following formula.

Power in KW = V I Cos
Assume power factor Cos =0.8
V=Voltage in KV
I=Current in A.

FOR 132KV:
P
132kv
=1.73*132*420*0.8/1000= 76.8 MW
Total 132KV circuits in Pakistan=484
P

=

484*76.8=37180 MW

For 220KV:
P
220kv
=1.73*220*636*0.8/1000= 193.6 MV
Total 220KV circuits in Pakistan=27
P
total
=27*193.6=5228 MW

For 500KV:
P
500kv
=1.73*500*720*0.8/1000=498MW
Total 500KV circuits =12
P
total
=12*498= 5978MW
