California Travel Agent Arrested in Fraud

Investigation
After months of investigation, the
Modesto Police Department arrested
a local travel agent when several
people reported not being refunded for
cancelled plane tickets.
Police began investigating SP Travel
Company in late June. During the
investigation, detectives learned that
the travel agent Sashi Pal, 39, was
mostly targeting Fijian victims. Police
identified over 50 victims throughout
California, with a net loss of over
$130,000.
At least 5 of those victims were left
stranded in a foreign country after
finding out their return flight home had
been cancelled or never purchased.
Pal provided the victims with
fraudulent/counterfeit
itineraries
indicating flights that did not exist.
Modesto Police spokesperson Heather
Graham says the soccer players from
San Francisco are not the only victims
of Sashi Pal with SP Travel Company.
According to police, a non-profit soccer
organization from San Francisco was
hit with the largest loss when they paid

over $30,000 to Pal for airline tickets

to a tournament in Fiji. Pal refused to
provide the legally required refund for
the airline tickets he never purchased.
Pal, who was previously managing
director at Hunts Travel in Suva, faced
charges of conspiracy to defraud the
Fijian government and of obtaining
money (F$10,000) by false pretenses
in 2005.
He was cleared when the judge Justice
Gerard Winter ruled there was no case
to answer.
California state law regarding Sellers of
Travel mandates that the seller provide
a refund to the traveler within three
days if the Seller is not able to provide
the travel. The Seller is also mandated
by state law to provide a refund to the
traveler within 30 days if the traveler
requests a refund.
Pal was arrested in Sacramento last
Friday, October 10th during his
bankruptcy hearing. He was booked
into the Stanislaus County Jail for
violations of the Sellers of Travel
law.

Tax Man Rakes In Over 1

Opposition Leader Kepa
Slams 217% Pay Raise For Point 5 Billion In Tax Revenue
PM, 197% For AG
Opposition Leader Ro Teimumu
Kepa has questioned the 217 per cent
increase in salary for Prime Minister
Voreqe Bainimarama and the 197 per
cent increase for Attorney General and
Finance Minister Sayed-Khaiyum.
Ro Teimumu said at the same time,
President's speech talked about plans
to increase the National Minimum
Wage from $2 per hour to $2.32 from
July 2015, a 16 per cent increase which
worked have to wait nine months for.
She said the increase in salaries was
153 per cent for selected Ministers,
134 per cent for other Ministers, and
63 per cent for assistant ministers.
She said the Government has not
hesitated in increasing its own pay.

To Bond Civil Servants

the Public Service Commission will
now be bonded.
The Commission has put in place
training and bonding policy to ensure
trained professionals are retained
within the civil service.
The government spends more than a
million dollars annually to send civil
servants on professional development
training either locally or abroad.
With more civil servants leaving for
greener pastures after their training the Public Service Commission has
now decided to bond them.
The area of training and policy is
important in the sense that government
spends money in sending civil servants
for training. That policy articulates how
training is to be organized meaning
who is entitled and what should be the
focal areas in terms of identification
of needs by the ministries, said the
permanent secretary of PSC, Parmesh
Chand.
Chand says this will ensure government

investment.
There were no such policies for civil
servants before.
Only students on scholarship were
bonded.
Its not that we would like to get people
trained and they then go and look for
greener pastures elsewhere. That will
ultimately happen, that is not an issue.
But immediately we would like to get
some return from our investment
The policy will also be used by the
respective ministries to formulate
their own professional development
initiatives.
This policy articulates amongst other
things what your obligations are if you
have put up your hand to be trained and
government has put up money for you
to be trained. Its not that any training
would be entitled to bonding, its only
that certain weeks or duration of training
and certain levels of expenditure will
be entitled to bonding, he said.
As the largest employer in the country,
the government hopes to retain as many
trained personnel as possible.

The risk of transmission of the Ebola

virus to flight crew during air travel
is low, says Fiji Airways managing
director and CEO Stefan Pichler.
Apart from adhering to strict
international guidelines, he said aircrew
had access to personal protective

Mr Pichler said they acted on the advice

"Additionally the airline receives realtime guidance from its many partner

he said.
"Currently, the risk of transmission

To ensure relocation is carried out in a

the interest of all stakeholders, a proper
guideline has been formulated.
Fiji is suffering the threats of climate

the moment and fear of all including

will be finalized as soon as cabinet

To finalize this important document, a
thorough consultation is also necessary.
Important thing is that we need to do
it well, we need to consult with all the

stakeholders. Those who are affected

and those who contribute particularly
development partners who will help us
to implement this, Yauvoli adds.
Fijis relocation guideline as well as the

the attention of the United Nations

an holistic approach in mitigating the

Cacao Fiji Aims For High Fiji Day Celebrated At The

With this in mind, founder of Cacao

Fiji, Arif Khan, is preparing to enter

The company is looking to have the first
container of export ready by mid next year.
Mr Khan said they are looking at one
container initially which would contain
anywhere from 15 tonnes to 18 tonnes
of cocoa beans.
Our aim is really to be the largest
exporter of cocoa from Fiji starting
with the US market, he said.
In terms of investment, Mr Khan said
this is a long-term project for them
but they are looking at investing a
minimum of $0.5 million initially.
The idea is to keep reinvesting into
the project, he said.

Maintain Law And

Order

GOVERNMENT will not tolerate

any attempts to disrupt Fiji's new
democracy or thwart the will of the
people.
That's the word from Defence Minister
Colonel Timoci Natuva as he assured
the nation that law and order would
be maintained while delivering his
maiden speech in Parliament.
Col. Natuva said his ministry would
have zero tolerance for any disturbance
or disruption. "When the Prime
Minister said recently that people can
sleep soundly in their beds at night
without need for fear, he meant it," he
said.
Col. Natuva said his job and the job
of the police backed by military was
to make sure that the promise was
delivered.
"Our duty remains to protect every
Fijian, our infrastructure, our values,
our sovereignty and our economy
on which the prosperity of everyone
depends," he said.
Col. Natuva said the global security
environment was dynamic and
constantly changing.
"With a diverse range of threats that are
on our horizon, our national security
sector needs to be agile, flexible and
adaptable to mitigate whatever threats
may come our way and defeat them if
necessary.
"To this end, we are strengthening our
capabilities across the board, including
our intelligence."
He said it was globally accepted
that security was the platform for
development.

"Therefore, the maintenance of internal

stability and meeting our international
security and defence obligations will
be the overarching requirement.
"Over the next four years, I intend
to ensure that all the arms of the
national security sector are made more
efficient and effective by instituting a
reform program that will ensure the
necessary democratic controls and
civilian oversight equated with our
new democracy is clearly established
and respected."
Col Natuva also revealed that he will
increase the capabilities and capacities
of the two disciplined services.
"This will allow them to effectively and
efficiently deliver to the expectations
of government and people.
"I also intend to strengthen the role
of my ministry to properly coordinate
the activities of the national security
machinery through the direction and
mandate of the National Security
Council."
Reforms:
- Reform the Fiji Police Force to ensure
it is properly mandated;
- Reform Police Act to align it to
current operational requirements;
- Implementation of the last job
evaluation exercise;
- Ensure RFMF has the necessary
capabilities to support peacekeeping
footprints;
- Develop Blackrock project as a
regional peacekeeping training centre;
- Build greater professionalism and
- Develop maritime surveillance and
defence capabilities.

Fijis Agriculture ministry organised

the first shipment of Fiji-bred sheep
to its Pacific neighbors, Samoa and
Tonga.
Bred at a multiplication sheep centre
owned by Mr Tiko Eastgate in Vanua
Levu, this latest sheep development
demonstrates years of attempt by
Government to get this project running.
The Ministry of Agricultures director
for Animal Health and Production, Mr
Tomasi Tunabuna said this is the first of
its kind to export 100 breeding female
sheep from the Private Multiplication
Centre ever since its set-up six years
ago. He said another 10 male sheep were
also exported but from the Ministrys
Nawaicoba Research Station.
In the past the Ministry had also
exported Sheep to Samoa and to the
Kingdom of Tonga, from the Ministrys

breeding research station.

In 2004, we managed to export 40
breeding ewes (female sheep) and four
rams (male sheep) to Samoa while
in 2005 we were able to ship four
breeding rams and 40 breeding ewes to
the Kingdom of Tonga, Mr Tunabuna
said.
For this new shipment a total of 110
sheep were sent on the request from
the Government of Samoa to the
Government of Fiji.
Mr Tunabuna said that the sheep were
carefully quarantined before departing
for Samoa.
The sheep were carefully looked
after which included being fed with
medicated feed and continuously
monitored by local Veteran for diseases.

More Concerns Raised On International Relations To

2013 Constitution
Be Extended
8

More questions have been raised about

the 2013 constitution in Parliament.
Opposition MP Honorable Niko
Nawaikula highlighted issues pertaining
to the document in his maiden speech.
Coming here on the very first day of
Parliament the feeling that I had was
that of anger and animosity towards the
other member on the other side of the
Houseand rightly so because for the
first time Im coming face to face with
the members of a government I hold
responsible for suppressing the rights
of the native people of this country, I
despise them because indigenous group
right touches on the very essence of my
cultural identity, Hon. Nawaikula said.
The MP then went on to express his
belief about the 2013 constitution.
I want to say Madame Speaker at
the outset that I do not think the 2013
constitution is the constitution of this
country not yet in any way. Because by

Honorable Professor Biman Prasad Calls On MPS To

Work Together

National Federation Party Leader

the Honorable Professor Biman
Prasads maiden speech contained the
realities that Fijis new parliamentary
democracy now inherits.
Promising to extend the support that
the Prime Minister has called for,
the Honorable Prasad says through
constructive exchange they expect
government programs to have more
impact.
Citing the high cost of living,
draconian decrees, a regulated media,
deteriorating health system and medical
services Honorable Prasad says these
are problems that can only be resolved
through leadership collective action
and perseverance.
Honorable Prasad said no one party
has the monopoly of ideas for fully
resolving these social and economic
problems but we will need perseverance,
dialogue and a shared commitment on
all sides to seek consensual solutions to
these problems.
We have been sent to this House to

solve these problems. We have very

little to celebrate in our parliamentary
democracy when a third of our people
live in extreme poverty., he said.
While the House represents Fijis
return to parliamentary democracy;
Honorable Prasad said democracy
remains work in progress.
The fact that a vast majority of MPs on
Opposition Benches are ITaukei draws
attention to the fact that institutions,
laws and programs that affect ITaukei
communities in specific ways need
to be reviewed and consensus built
around some of these issues.
The NFP, he said fought the general
elections on specific issues and did not
campaign along racial and religious
lines or promote lies and deceit.
When necessary we will criticize
governments policies. When we
shall do so, it will not be for the sake
of doing so, but because we in our
considered view are able to provide
credible alternatives.
And not one to tone down on what

reality is Honorable Prasad said
there is very little to celebrate in our
parliamentary democracy when a third
of our people live in extreme poverty.

conviction that through collective

action and perseverance we can change

things in Fiji for the better; however
difficult the obstacles might be.
To make this country great once more
Honorable Prasad urged leaders
to work with humility and embrace
dialogue and commitment in moving
Fiji forward.

Fijians Are Entitled To Better

Health Care - Jone Usamate
I wish she was here to see the son of
a house girl who has now become a
member of parliament and Minister in
this government.
These were the words of Health and
Medical Services Minister, Jone
Usamate while delivering his maiden
speech in Parliament.
He also gave thanks to his late mother
who raised him as a single mother for
the early part of his life.
Usamate said his mother passed away
just as the 2014 election campaign
started.
Usamate then said that in Fiji we cannot
expect to have the same standard of
advanced healthcare like some of our
bigger neighbors.
But, Usamate then said that the Fijian
people are entitled to expect a level
of adequate care and basic facilities
just as importantly they are entitled to
expect the proper level of service from
adequately trained medical personnel
and attitude of care and concern at what
is sometimes one of the most stressful
times in their lives.
He said they have hired hundreds of
new doctors and nurses in the last eight
years.
Usamate told Parliament that he intends
to work with his Assistant Minister in
the first few weeks to identify areas
in the system that need priority and

attention and begin the task to rectify

any shortcomings.
He said in spite of a huge investment
in the last eight years, Fiji still lacks
the number of nurses and doctors and
special staff to deliver a proper level of
service.
Usamate also revealed that a whole
range of new initiatives will be
announced for the Health sector in the
2015 National budget.

University Of Fiji On
$2.5M Expansion Plan

The University of Fiji conducted the

ground breaking ceremony of a 2.5
million dollar project at its Samabula
Campus.
The project which is expected to be
completed by early next year will give
the university much needed rooms to
cater for more students.
The University of Fijis Samabula
campus caters for the Law, International
and Regional Affairs courses.
The new development will now see
the University offering more than just
areas of study.
The expansion will add value to
governments vision of making Fiji
a knowledge based society and I am
pleased to note that the University
is privileged to be receiving grant
of $3.5million this year, said the
chancellor of the University Ratu Epeli
Nailatikau.
The new development has also been

timely for the institution as demand has

gradually increased.
The total enrollment here is nearly
500 students and it grew from virtually
nothing in this 4 to 5 year period. The
University growth overall is around 30
percent a year, thats across the whole
university, said Prof. Richard Coll,
the Vice Chancellor of the University.
Plans are also afoot for the University
to offer Masters in Business
Administration at its Samabula
Campus.
Chancellor, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau says
such developments will make Fiji the
hub of higher education in the region.
In terms of quality assurance , I
am also pleased to not the UniFiji
is working closely with the Higher
Education Commission in seeking
that its programmes and qualifications
are credited and added to the Fiji
qualification framework.

Parliamentary Rules On
Maiden Speeches

Our parliamentary rules on maiden

speeches spelt out by Speaker Dr Jiko
Luveni follow the traditions of other
democracies.
There may be slight technical
variations from country to country but
they operate in the same spirit.
The Westminster system in Britains
House of Commons uses a convention
that maiden speeches should be
relatively uncontroversial so as to not
attract interjections, often consisting of
a general statement of the politicians
beliefs and background rather than a
partisan comment on a topical issue.
Usually regarded as the cradle of
democracy, Britain with its Westminster
model is point of reference by many
countries including Fiji.
Dr Luveni has been prompted to spell
out the maiden speech convention
after SODELPA MP Niko Nawaikula
shocked Parliament with his maiden
speech which was clearly a breach of
the convention. Mr Nawaikula opened
his maiden speech by saying: Coming
here on the very first day of parliament
the feeling that I had was that of anger
and animosity towards the members of
the other side of the House.
And rightly so, because for the first
time I am coming face to face with
the members of a government I hold
responsible for suppressing the rights
of the native people of this country.
I despised them because indigenous
group right touches on the very essence
of my cultural identity.
Mr Nawaikula went on to warn that
unless the Constitution was amended

to include, among other things,

indigenous issues, it was Parliament
invitation for another coup.
Dr Luveni reminded MPs that under the
convention, it was highly undesirable
for their speech to contain controversial
and provocative material. She added
that as far as possible their speech
should be relevant to the content of the
Presidents opening speech.
So far I believe the chair has been
very tolerant in this regard and it would
be regrettable at this stage of the debate
if the chair was forced to invoke the
provision of Standing Order 67 and
direct a member to terminate their
speech, she said.
There is also a strong convention in
some countries that maiden speeches
should not be subjected to interruption
or interjection and should not be
attacked or dismissed by subsequent
speakers.
Under the Standing Orders the Speaker
has the authority to stop interjections.
Because this is a new Parliament, MPs
will have to get used to the provisions
of the Standing Orders.
Yesterday, SODELPA MP Ratu
Naiqama Lalabalavu posed some
Ebola questions to the Government
side. Leader of Government business
Pio Tikoduadua said they needed time
to respond.
After the morning tea break, Dr Luveni
told the House that Ratu Naiqama was
out of order asking the question. Under
the Standing Orders, no questions are
allowed during the duration of the
maiden speeches.

Police Urge Caution To Junk Removal Customers

A news investigation into the charging
practices of 1-888-JUNK-VAN has
raised questions about who you should
trust and what you should do if you feel
like youre being taken advantage of
by a junk removal service.
The investigation was launched after
several consumers complained about
the company, saying they felt theyd
been overcharged for their services.
The owner of the 1-888-JUNK-VAN
Vancouver franchise is Shariff Begg. A
news producer booked an appointment
with the company after buying a $35
online coupon for 250 pounds of junk
removal.
What Begg didnt know was the
transaction was being recorded by
several hidden cameras and the junk
to be hauled away had already been
pre-weighed with a high quality digital
scale used by another junk removal
company. The scale has been calibrated
by Measurement Canada.
The junk weighed in at 108 kilograms,
or 238 pounds. But when 1-888-JUNKVAN came to pick it up, the company
claimed it weighed 689 pounds. It
asked for another $152 from the news
producer.
Consumer reporter Lynda Steele
approached Begg to ask him some
questions, but he quickly drove away.

Begg declined several interview

requests, but Steele did contact him

Begg claimed he had only given the
producer a rough estimate, and insists
most of his customers are happy with
his service.
We've done over maybe six thousand,
seven thousand customers since we've
been open and you're always going to
have those customers that do not like
the price, and there's not much you
could do about that, right?" he said.
Consumers who feel that theyve
been taken advantage of can protect

themselves, say Vancouver police.

"Simply doing a couple of quick
searches on the Internet, do some
homework, look the company up, see if
there's been complaints, check them out
with the Better Business Bureau," said
Const. Brian Montague, Vancouver
Police Department spokesperson.
1-888-JUNK-VAN has an "F" rating
with the BBB because of unresolved
consumer complaints.
"The amount of trash that this company

is claiming that they're loading into

their truck is exorbitantly more than
they [customers] believe is loaded into
the truck," said Seumas Gordon, BBB
of Mainland B.C. spokesperson.
In fact, complaints about junk removal
companies have more than doubled in
2014. Of the 24 complaints received this
year throughout the Lower Mainland,
13 have been against 1-888-JUNKVAN.
The bottom line is do your homework
before hiring any company.
"If you see an F rating, that speaks for
itself. That's a red flag," said Gordon.
If you have issues with a junk removal
company, Vancouver police suggest
you give them a call to at least get it on
record. If there are enough complaints
about the same company, that may lead
to an investigation and possible charges.
If you're feeling intimidated or
threatened when a transaction is taking
place, you should call police. They will
come out to help keep the peace.
As for Sharif Begg, he posted on his
Facebook page a few weeks ago, that
he is "selling everything and moving
to Fiji" and 1-888-JUNK-VAN is listed
for sale on Craigslist Vancouver.

Man Robbed After Responding Only South Asian Candidate

To Craigslist Ad For Macbook Signs Vandalized In Surrey

Buying things from strangers online

can be risky.
Thats the message from Mounties
after a 28-year-old man was robbed
at gunpoint while responding to a
Craigslist ad for a $600 MacBook
laptop.
The New Westminster resident agreed
to meet the seller publicly in the
Edgemont area of North Vancouver
Friday evening, only to be confronted
by two men and mugged.
Mounties said the robbers took all
the cash he had on him, which totaled
$675, and fled the area on foot.
The victim called the RCMP and

officers managed to track down one

19-year-old suspect that evening. They
also recovered an imitation handgun.
Cpl. Richard De Jong said the case
should serve as a warning about the
dangers of dealing with strangers
online.
Because anyone can post on a social
media site, you should be extra
cautious when dealing with a complete
stranger, De Jong said in a statement.
You really dont know who you may
be dealing with.
The suspect is facing charges of
robbery and possession of a controlled
substance.

South Asian civic candidates seem to

be the only ones targeted by someone
spray painting signs throughout Surrey.
Names and faces have been crossed out
or drawn on.
Every single sign thats out there that
has a team attached to it, and it is only
the South Asian names that are being
defaced, explains mayoral candidate
Linda Hepner. Its disappointing, its
deplorable and its not reflective of the
Surrey that I know.
Its happened to mayoral candidate
Barinder Rasode.
I know that at least 15 of my signs
were damaged and volunteers are

working quickly to replace them, says

Rasode. Its really unfortunate. I think
its an incident that is not reflective of
the City of Surrey and the residents of
Surrey.
Its also happened to Councillor Tom
Gill, and candidates Rina Gill and
Justin Thind.
This problem is not just limited to
politicians, the defacing of signs has
also been happening for a few months
to other South Asian business people in
the community.
Surrey Mounties say no formal
complaints have been launched but
they are aware of the issue.

The number of cases of Enterovirus

in BC has more than doubled in the
past week, there are now 23 confirmed
cases. The last update we had was
about a week ago, when there were
nine cases.
None of the people who are sick are
elderly; the BC Centre for Disease
Control says theyre all aged 20 and
under. Fifteen cases were reported
locally, within the Fraser Health and
Vancouver Coastal Health authorities.
Now that were in flu season, there
are growing concerns about what the
difference is in terms of symptoms and
when should you go to the hospital.
The flu symptoms include a fever, cough
and extreme fatigue. Enterovirus, for
most people, have cold-like symptoms,
but either illness can be very dangerous
for those with underlying health
problems linked to their heart or lungs.
Most people will fully recover from
both of these viruses. Influenza tends
to cause a more abrupt and severe

illness in most people, but still people

will fully recover from their illness in
general, unless they have underlying
conditions. And for those people its
prudent to self-monitor if you are
getting worse and especially if youre
having shortness of breath get
medical help immediately.
Doctors say you should routinely
wash your hands and avoid touching
your face. They also believe the rate
infection will slowly fade in the next
couple of weeks because well likely

The average Canadian saw their monthly

bill for things like cable TV, internet
access and cellphones increase 3.2 per
cent last year, the Canadian Radiotelevision and Telecommunications
Commission said Thursday.
The total average monthly bill for
communications services like the ones
mentioned above was $191 last year.
That's up from $185 the year before,
the telecom regulator said.
Part of the increase in costs is attributed
to the fact that Canadians are using
more data on their wireless plans, and
signing up for faster, better internet
access, the CRTC says.
But the cost for some of those services is
going up faster than others and some
things are actually getting cheaper.
The average bill for cable or satellite
television went up by $1.54 per month
to $53.56. That's an increase of just
under three per cent. Cellphone bills,
meanwhile, increased by an average
of $1.91 a month to $69.33. That's an

increase of just over 2.8 per cent.

Most spending on mobile
Internet access costs increased by more
than anything else, up by $4.42 or more
than 14 per cent to an average of $35.37
a month. But spending on landline
telephone service actually decreased
by $2.01 to $32.85 per month. That's a
drop of almost six per cent.
For comparison purposes, the most up-todate figures show Canada's overall inflation
rate is at 2.1 per cent. It's been consistently
above the two per cent level since April,
after spending the first three months of the
year between one and two per cent.
Beyond the averages, Canadians spent
more on mobile wireless services than
any other communications service (36 per
cent), followed by home television service
(28 per cent), internet service (19 per cent),
and home telephone service (17 per cent).
All that spending helped boost revenues
in the industry to $61.9 billion in 2013,
a 1.9 per cent increase from $60.8
billion the year before.

Boy, 10, Kills Woman, 90, For Yelling At Him

I killed that lady, the 10-year-old boy
told a Pennsylvania state trooper, after
a 90-year-old woman was found dead
in the home of the boys grandfather.
Tristen Kurilla, a fifth grader, made
the chilling confession, police said,
after his mother brought him to the
Pennsylvania State Police Barracks in
Honesdale, about 140 miles north of
Philadelphia.
Now, Kurilla is being held at the
Wayne County Correctional Facility
and charged as an adult with criminal
homicide, the Wayne County district
attorneys office said. The boy is
separated from adult offenders and is
being constantly supervised.
The boy admitted to grabbing a wooden
cane, holding it against 90-year-old
Helen Novaks throat for several
seconds and punching her in the throat
and stomach according to the police
affidavit.
Kurilla told police he was angry at
Novak because she had yelled at him
when he entered her room. He said he
wanted to ask her a question.
Were you trying to kill her, the trooper

asked the boy.

No, I was only trying to hurt her,
Kurilla replied, according to the
affidavit.
The boy was ordered to be held without
bail after his arraignment and is set to
appear in court October 22.
Bernie Brown, his lawyer, said he was
petitioning the court to get the fifthgrade Damascus Elementary School
student out of jail, as reported.
Tristen really kind of doesnt have an
idea of what is going on, Brown told
the station.
Brown added, Jail is still jail, no
matter what part of the facility you are
in.
Brown also can petition a judge to
transfer the case to juvenile court.
Janine Edwards, Wayne County district
attorney, said Pennsylvania law made
it mandatory that a criminal homicide
charge be first directly filed in adult
court by the prosecutor regardless of
the age of the perpetrator, as reported.
It is not a choice I made, she told the
station, adding that a juvenile detention
center will not accept a child charged

Asylum Seeker Baby Born In

Australia Denied Refugee Visa

A federal court has ruled that a baby

born in Australia to an asylum seeker
is not entitled to a refugee visa.
Ferouz Myuddin, who is 11 months
old, was born in Brisbane when his
mother was transferred to hospital from
a refugee detention centre on Nauru.
A judge backed the government's
earlier ruling that the baby was an
"unauthorised maritime arrival" so
could not claim refugee status.
Lawyers said he and 100 similar babies
could now be sent to Nauru.
The hearing comes as the federal
government considers amending the
Migration Act to retrospectively declare
all babies born to asylum seekers who
arrive by boat as unauthorised maritime
arrivals, irrespective of whether they
were born on Australian soil.
If the amendments are passed, babies

born to asylum seeker parents in

Australia will have no right to apply
for a permanent protection visa and
should be transferred offshore.
Ferouz's family are Muslim Rohingyas
who said they fled to Myanmar
(also known as Burma) to escape
persecution.
They landed on Australian territory in
September last year and were taken to
the off-shore processing centre in Nauru.
Ferouz was born prematurely after his
mother was taken to hospital in Brisbane
because of concerns over her pregnancy.
'Ludicrous decision'
Immigration Minister Scott Morrison
had previously denied Ferouz a
protection visa - which allows refugees
to live permanently in Australia - on the
basis that he had arrived on Australian
territory by sea illegally.

the warden made. Its not a choice
Pennsylvania State Police made.
The age of the defendant was unusual,
she told the station.
Thats not something Ive seen, she
said. Im not sure how many times
thats been seen in Pennsylvania or
not.
Police were initially called to the home
of Kurillas grandfather, Anthony
Virbitsky, in Damascus Township
last Saturday morning with a report
that an elderly woman had died there,
the affidavit said. Virbitsky was the
womans caretaker, authorities said.
The county coroner responded to
the home, found Novaks body and
transported it to the morgue, the
affidavit stated.
A few hours later, the boys mother,
Martha Virbitsky, appeared at the
state police post with her son and told
Trooper John Decker that the boy
had confessed to killing Novak, the
affidavit said.
The boys mother told police that
she has had a lot of trouble with

Tristen and that he has some mental

difficulties and had been violent in the
past, the affidavit said.
Kurilla had told his grandfather that
Novak was bleeding from the mouth,
but denied having done anything to
her, Decker wrote in the affidavit.
Anthony Virbitsky told police he
checked on Novak but found no blood,
although she was breathing heavily.
He asked her if she wanted to go to
a hospital, the affidavit said, but she
refused. When he went to check on her
less than an hour later, she was dead,
Virbitsky told police, and then his
grandson confessed that he had hit her.
An autopsy performed Monday
discovered blunt force trauma to
Novaks neck and her death was
ruled a homicide, the district attorneys
statement said.
Some residents in Damascus Township
took issue with locking up the boy in
the county jail.
I know they see a lot of things but I
dont think that they understand what
theyre doing, Kristy Tirney told the
media. I dont know.

Backpacker Brings Back Leech From Travels In

Vietnam Up Her Nose
BACKPACKER has carried a rather unusual souvenir home from Vietnam up her nose.

Daniela Liverani was travelling around

South East Asia when we started
suffering nosebleeds, believed to be
due to a burst blood vessel from a
motorbike crash.
It wasnt until returning home to
Edinburgh did she notice a small object
dangling from her nose, which she
initially dismissed as congealed blood.
The 24-year-old was rushed to
emergency after realising she did in
fact had a leech living in her nose for
over a month.
Daniela told the Mirror in the UK
About two weeks before I came home
from Asia, I started having nosebleeds.
Id fallen off a motorbike just before
they started so at first I thought I must
have burst a blood vessel.
After I got home, the nosebleeds
stopped and I started seeing something
sticking out of my nostril. I just
thought it was congealed blood from
the nosebleeds.
Daniela recalled seeing the leech
dangling from her nostril only to sniff
him back up, convinced it was still a
blood clot.
I tried to blow him out and grab him
but I couldnt get a grip of him before
he retreated back up my nose.

When I was in the shower, he would

come right out as far as my bottom lip
and I could see him sticking out the
bottom of my nose.
So when that happened, I jumped out of
the shower to look really closely in the
mirror and I saw ridges on him. Thats
when I realised he was an animal.
Daniela immediately went to hospital
where nurses and doctors used a torch,
forceps and tweezers to remove the
bloodsucker.
Daniela said: It was agony
whenever the doctor grabbed him,
I could feel the leech tugging at the
inside of my nose.
Then all of a sudden, after half an
hour, the pain stopped and the doctor
had the leech in the tweezers.
Doctors informed Daniela that if she
hadnt gone to hospital, the creepy
crawler probably would have worked
its way into her brain
Mark Siddal, curator at the American
Museum of Natural History in New
York and an expert on leeches said:
Daniela could have picked up this
leech from water in Vietnam, if she had
been swimming.
Or it could have gone in through her
mouth, as she was drinking water.

Low-Caste Indian Teenager

Burnt To Death Over
Straying Goat, Police Say
A low-caste teenage boy in India has
been burnt to death for letting his goat
stray into paddy fields belonging to a
high-caste farmer, police say.
Sai Ram was attacked on Wednesday
night in a village in Rohtas district of
Bihar, one of India's most populous,
underdeveloped and impoverished states.
"Ram was first badly beaten by [the]
accused and later set on fire," Chandan
Kushwaha, superintendent of police in
Rohtas said.
"He was declared dead when brought
to a local government hospital."
The 15-year-old belonged to the
Mahadalit caste, the lowest in India's
hereditary social system.
Mr Kushwaha said police had
registered a murder case against the
farmer, who was arrested on Thursday,
after the boy's family went to police
requesting action.

"Police have begun their investigation

into the case and raids continued to
arrest the accused, who had absconded
after the incident," he said.
More than 138 million Indians
belong to the lowest caste known as
the Dalits, or "the oppressed," the
term the community prefers to the
"untouchables".
In Bihar, the Mahadalits have been
classed by the state government as the
poorest of the Dalits.
Angry members of the opposition
Communist Party of India protested
in the area against the attack, blocking
roads, the Press Trust of India (PTI)
news agency reported.
State chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi,
himself a Mahadalit, demanded swift
action to bring those responsible to
justice, and pledged compensation for
the boy's family, the PTI said.

A NURSE was arrested for killing as many

as 38 patients because she found them or
their relatives annoying, police said.
Daniela Poggiali, a 42-year-old
resident of the Italian town of Lugo,
was taken into custody over the
weekend and booked for the alleged
slaying of 78-year-old patient Rosa
Calderoni, who died from an injection
of potassium.
Calderoni had been admitted to the
hospital with a routine illness before
she died unexpectedly.
Tests showed she died with a
high amount of potassium, which

can provoke cardiac arrest, in her

bloodstream, according to the news.
Her death triggered an investigation,
which found that 38 others had died
mysteriously while Poggiali was on
duty, the news agency reported.
One of Poggialis fellow nurses described
her as a "cold person but always eager to
work", according to CEN.
Another one of Poggialis colleagues
said the accused nurse was once
reported for giving powerful laxatives
to patients at the end of her shift to
make work tougher for nurses working
after her.

Dealing With The Stubborn Health Benefits Of Cucumbers

And Argumentative Teen
Very few teenagers actually like
to argue. They're just trying to ask
questions in order to find out why we
do things the way we do them. Teens
are starting to get interested in life
and what goes on around them. In
their awkward way, they are trying to
get at the reason for our actions. They
form opinions and naturally wonder if
our way is the only way. While "Do it
this way" or "Because I said so" might
have worked with our nine year old, for
the teenager this is not reason enough
anymore.
Due to the teen's lack of communication
skills, their questions are easily
perceived as criticism by parents - and
we get defensive. Some teens give up
easily, surprised by the parent's reaction,
if they don't get the information they
were after, while others just keep on
trying - and parent and teen wind up in
a heated argument.
Teens are also expanding their
independence and will fight to have
some input and control over their lives.
They want to be able to make small
decisions on their own, without the
parent telling them how and when.
If your teen feels he is being controlled
or pressured too much he will either
resort to stubbornly ignoring you and
your request, or he will argue.
In fact, your teen could get so focused
on breaking out from under your
control and pressure that nothing
else will matter to him. For example,
repeatedly asking your teen to do his
homework could result in him not
doing his homework at all - and your
teen is not considering how this will
affect his grades.
One way to avoid this type of stubborn
opposition is to give some control to
your teen by attaching a time limit

to your request. "Please finish your

homework before dinner," for example,
and then don't mention it again until
dinner.
Allow your teen to make decisions on
matters you know he can handle, and
let him know that you are ready and
available if he needs help. Involving
your teen in decisions about him does
not take away a parent's power, but it
shows your teen that you accept him
as an individual and are ready to give
him a chance. It also teaches him that
he can indeed work with you through
important life decisions.
Give your teen responsibility by
assigning tasks, but step back and let
him handle the situation. There is a
very good chance your teen will do the
task differently than you would, and
for some parents it will not be easy at
all to let the teen try it a different way
when you know what works.
Resist that urge, let your teen
experiment - and try not to tell him
he is doing it wrong or that it will not
work that way. Either your teenager
will prove to you that there is another
way to come to the same result, or he
will have to admit, after several wasted
hours, that your way is the right way
after all.
Overall, try not to answer with a quick
"No" if your teen approaches you with
a request - and I know it's so easy,
we are already stressed juggling job,
household, and family. The last thing
we need is something else to worry
about. However, if you take the time to
listen to your teen and his opinions, he
will also be willing to listen to you and
your advice.
You will be surprised how quickly you
will see a difference in the way you and
your teen interact.

Cucumbers are the fourth most

cultivated vegetable in the world and
known to be one of the best foods
for your body's overall health, often
referred to as a superfood. Cucumbers
are often sprayed with pesticides so
it is important to buy organic or even
better, grow them yourself.
Here are 10 Benefits of cucumbers:
1.Quick pick me-up - Cucumbers
are a good source of B vitamins. Put
down your sodas and coffee and eat a
cucumber slice.
2. Rehydrates body and replenishes
daily vitamins - Cucumbers are 95
percent water, keeping the body
hydrated while helping the body
eliminate toxins. Cucumbers have
most of the vitamins the body needs
in a single day. Don't forget to leave
the skin on because the skin contains
a good amount of vitamin C, about
10 percent of the daily-recommended
allowance.
3. Skin and hair care - If you don't like
to eat the skin, it can be used for skin
irritations and sunburns as aloe would
be used. Place a slice over puffy eyes
and its anti-inflammatory properties
help reduce puffiness. The silicon and
sulfur in cucumbers help to stimulate
hair growth.
4. Fight cancers - Cucumber are known
to contain lariciresinol, pinoresinol,
and secoisolariciresinol. These three
lignans have a strong history of
research in connection with reduced
risk of several cancer types, including
breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine
cancer and prostate cancer.
5. Home care - Eliminates a foggy
mirror. Before taking a shower, rub a
cucumber slice along a mirror and it
will eliminate the mirror fogging up.
Instead of WD40, take a cucumber
slice and rub it along a squeaky hinge
and your door will stop squeaking.
6. Relieves bad breath - Take a slice

advertise on

of cucumber and press it to the roof of

your mouth with your tongue for 30
seconds, the phytochemcials will kill
the bacteria in your mouth responsible
for causing bad breath.
7. Hangover cure - To avoid a morning
hangover or headache; eat a few
cucumber slices before going to bed.
Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B
vitamins and electrolytes to replenish
many essential nutrients, reducing
the intensity of both hangover and
headache.
8. Aids in weight loss and digestion Due to its low calorie and high water
content, cucumber is an ideal diet for
people who are looking for weight loss.
The high water content and dietary
fiber in cucumbers are very effective
in ridding the body of toxins from the
digestive system, aiding digestion.
Daily consumption of cucumbers can
be regarded as a remedy for chronic
constipation.
9. Cures diabetes, reduces cholesterol
and controls blood pressure - Cucumber
juice contains a hormone which is
needed by the cells of the pancreas for
producing insulin which has been found
to be beneficial to diabetic patients.
Researchers found that a compound
called sterols in cucumbers may help
reduce cholesterol levels. Cucumbers
contain a lot of potassium, magnesium
and fiber. These work effectively for
regulating blood pressure. This makes
cucumbers good for treating both low
blood pressure and high blood pressure.
10. Promotes joint health, relieves
gout and arthritis pain -Cucumber is
an excellent source of silica, which is
known to help promotes joint health by
strengthening the connective tissues.
They are also rich in vitamin A, B1, B6,
C & D, Folate, Calcium, Magnesium,
and Potassium. When mixed with carrot
juice, they can relieve gout and arthritis
pain by lowering the uric acid levels

Keep Your Skin Looking

Young

You might not know what it is, but

collagen is the key when it comes
to keeping your skin youthful and
wrinkle-free.
Collagen is a protein produced by
our cells that helps "hold" the skin
together, giving it firmness and
elasticity. When we're young, our skin
stays plump and smooth because it
constantly regenerates itself. But as we
age, collagen production slows - and
existing collagen can get damaged due
to sun exposure and bad skin habits.
The results? Wrinkles and sagging
skin. Luckily, there's lots you can do to
preserve your collagen and even boost
its production.
1. UP YOUR VITAMIN C IN TAKE
A study published in the American
Journal of Nutrition found women
over 40 with the highest amount of
vitamin C in their diet were less likely
to develop wrinkles than those who
consumed lower levels."Vitamin C is
crucial to the formation of collagen.
Without it, amino acids can't be linked
to form the protein. Good sources are
red pepper, dark green leafy vegetables
like broccoli and sprouts, tomatoes,
oranges and kiwi fruit. Skincare
products that contains vitamin C is
also thought to encourage collagen
repair (it's usually listed on the label as
Lascorbic acid, ascorbyl palmitate or
ascorbyl phosphate).
2. STOP SMOKING
Smoking creates enzymes called
matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs),
which damage the collagen in your
skin; hence the telltale sagging which
many smokers are betrayed by.
3. STAY SUN SAFE
Sun exposure is a prime suspect for
hastening collagen loss. UVA rays
penetrate deep into the skin and damage
the deep collagen support structures
there. My advice would be to wear an
SPF15 broad spectrum cream (one that
protects against UVA and UVB rays)
through the year.
4. REACH FOR RETINOL
Retinoid creams - only available on
prescription - have been proven to help
boost collagen production. Retinoids
reduce substances in the skin that break
down collagen after sun exposure and
also target receptors in the skin which
increase the production of collagen.
You can get your hands on milder
forms of retinoid in over-the-counter
retinol creams.
5. CUT BACK ON THE STUFF
SWEET

Funds Available

Eating too much sugar can be a beauty

disaster. It causes premature ageing of
the skin by a process called glycation.
This is where excess sugar in the blood
attaches itself to lipids, nucleic acids
and proteins (especially your collagen)
to form "advanced glycation end
products" or AGEs, which accelerate
the ageing process and cause wrinkly
skin.
6. EXFOLIATE
Exfoliation - removing the top, dead
layer of skin - helps speed up the natural
process of skin and collagen renewal.
My favourite way to b exfoliate is with
chemical exfoliants such as glycolic
acid and lactic acid. They dissolve
the glue-like substance that bonds
dead skin to the surface rather than
sloughing it away like scrubs do, and
give a more even scrubs do, and give a
more even result, leaving skin looking
healthier and more radiant.
7. ADD ANTIOXIDANTS TO
YOUR SKINCARE REGIME
Antioxidants help protect against free
radicals that can cause ageing skin.
The term `free radical' describes a
damaged skin cell. It's `free' because
it's missing an electron (healthy cells
have two electrons, a damaged cell has
one). Free radicals attach themselves
to healthy skin cells and basically
suck out the electrons they need,
leaving healthy skin cells damaged.
This process triggers an enzyme in
the skin that breaks down collagen.
Antioxidants help by neutralising the
free radical so that it doesn't have to
feed off our healthy skin cells.
Sip on green tea - it contains
antioxidants called catechins -and eat
foods high in lutein, an antioxidant
found in green leafy veg like spinach.
Look for creams and serums containing
antioxidants, too.
8. PLANT PROTEINS, PLEASE
The menopause can make us wrinkly
because, as we age, our oestrogen
levels drop. Because oestrogen is vital
to making healthy collagen, creases
and crinkles can creep in to our skin.
Lots of foods contain plant oestrogens
(phytoestrogens) that can help replace the
effects of lost oestrogen. Try hummus,
nuts, soy and pinto beans. Look for face
creams containing phytoestrogens.
9. MASSAGE
Massaging your face daily will help
boost the production of collagen, give
skin a more plump appearance and help
stimulate the lymph glands to promote
clear skin. Use a collagen boosting oil.

ARIES
An increase in regular income is
predicted. It could be through some
commission work, or through parttime occupation. The employed gets
some extra income in the form of
bonus or wage increase. An investment
in shares also gets you rich dividends
plus a bonus. A chance of meeting with
someone at a get-together, or while
commuting to work, could suddenly
lead to a romantic affair in this week.
You meet your family members.
TAURUS
A person who has been seeking your
participation in a certain venture may
have some selfish designs behind the
entire scheme. If you happen to have
doubts about fresh business proposals,
drop the deal rather than block your
money in such transactions .Your love
life could suddenly take a turn for the
worse, and perhaps you are to blame in
this week.
GEMINI
Monetary gains are indicated through
your efforts at work. Some of you
may invest in a new home, property
or a vehicle. Socially, you are much
in demand. At a meeting or large
gathering, you are going to be very
popular. People will go out of their way

to seek your company. In this week you

spend your some time in books.
CANCER
Do not get taken in by tall promises and
allurement of making a fast buck, for
these will lead to a major setback. You
need to devote more time at home and
with your family in this week. By being
away from home most of the time you
could be missing out on the pleasures
and delights of marriage and romance.
Don't thing the every opposite sex is
interested in you.
LEO
You seem to benefit more through
your social contacts and also through
your good public relations. But make
sure to meet all your commitments on
schedule lest you lose credibility and
even let down your benefactor. Those
looking for openings in a creative field
will get a favourable offer this week. A
marriage proposal for those in love is
likely. Avoid hard word to spouse.
VIRGO
You will do well at work and monetary
gains are indicated in this week.
Perhaps you may be cited for an honour
for a recent achievement. Those who
have been unwell will make a quick
recovery. A happy occasion will be
celebrated in the family. Must respect

your well-wishers.
LIBRA
You will be in mood to take risks
in new ventures, and are likely to
emerge successful. There will be new
developments around you which give
you ample opportunities and scope to
surge ahead in your career. An increase
in your income and better financial
prospects are likely. You are able to
fulfill a dream. If you want to go in
some real creative field, this week is
the best.
SCORPIO
A busy but rewarding day. Plans
for a journey are afoot. News from
overseas concerning work will also be
favourable. You will be entertaining
this week which will be quite a success.
However, a late night could take its
toll on your health. Must respect your
seniors and take care of others money
matters.
SAGITTARIUS
Work in co-operation with others to
achieve optimum results. In matters
of love you need to repose more trust
and faith in your love ones to achieve
harmony. After a little soul searching
you will realize that you have been
overly sensitive for no reason at all.
Must care health in this week and take

27

rest.
CAPRICORN
An increase in income is indicated.
You will be able to reinvest the
surplus amount profitably. There will
be undercurrents of tensions on the
home front especially for those living
in a joint family. Try to keep your
temper in control or things could get
out of hand. One your best old friend
will help you on some new venture in
this week.
AQUARIUS
A delay in promised payment could
be distressing. Handle financial issues
carefully to avoid any loss. Avoid
making any further investments and
financial commitments right now.
Problems in your personal life will
be overcome. Your mate will be more
supportive and helpful. You must think
best for everyone.
PIECES
A very busy week at work. You will be
meeting a lot of people, perhaps with
new work proposals. You may be tense
about certain developments in the
family. A family member will visit you
this week. Try to be diplomatic in your
own interest. Avoid discussing topics
that can lead to conflicts. Always first
think then speak.

After Being Bitto's Wife Sumona To Don A New

Avatar

Actress Sumona Chakravarti, best

known for her roles in "Bade Achche
Lagte Hain" and "Comedy Nights
With Kapil", has donned the look of
a superstar for an episode of "Yeh Hai
Aashiqui".
Channel bindass has launched a
special four-week mini-series dealing
with relationship issues. Sumona will

will be aired Sunday.
The talented actress will be seen in a
different avatar of a rockstar, where
she is a member of a rock band in her
college and plays guitar too.
Sumona says she was attracted to the
concept of "Yeh Hai Aashiqui" the very
first time that she saw it.
"I remember, it was an amazing love
story which was beautifully shot,

just like a tele-film, unlike the usual

television shows. Every story on
'Yeh Hai Aashiqui' has been unique
and easily relatable to today's youth.
So, when this opportunity knocked
at my door, I could not turn it down,
especially due to the characterisation,
with which I fell in love instantly," she
said in a statement.
The story revolves around the lives of
Tejaswini and Jigar. While Tejaswini is
a smart, educated and modern smalltown girl who is a part of rock band
in her college, Jigar has an extremely
conservative approach towards things
and is taking every step to stop western
music and culture take over his college.
What will be the outcome when these
conflicting personalities clash -- that
forms the rest of the story.

Dracula Untold (PG) ***

Blood Lust!
During the 1940s and 1950s Universal
Studios was the king of horror films.
Back In Those days we're not talking
about slasher/splatter efforts. Instead
classics like Frankenstein and The
Werewolf plus various Creatures
from the Black Lagoon made quite
the impression on legions of fans.
Today that tradition may well continue
with Dracula Untold. Fear the great
unknown at scores of Cineplex odeon
theatrical halls across stately British
Columbia.
How far would you go to save your
family? This question sows the seeds
for carnage galore when an embattled
prince takes on some evil Turks circa
1452. Handsome and a champion of
the people and with a loving wife
and small son is Vlad. Dashing and
debonair with hints Of mystery is Luke
Evans. Determined to save his family

and kingdom is the young ruler who

literally makes a pact with the devil to
save the day. Possibly.
Director Gary Shore milks the
Transylvania tradition and does a good
job showcasing the madness of it all.
Fresh off playing James Bond creator
Ian Fleming for the BBC is Dominic
Cooper who does bad guys real well
as Mehmed, the merciless leader of the
Turks.
Tension, a sense of menace plus
intense and impressive military battles
souped up with some nifty special
effects make Dracula Untold a campy
return to an old legend who seems
to have aged well over the centuries.
And watch out for a touch of elegance
and sly ghoulish humour and charm
by way of a dapper Charles Dance as
the ultimate charm boy with a wicked
overbite.

The Best Of Me (PG) ****

Lovers of all ages should appreciate
the pitfalls of relationships that surface
in The Best of Me. Again novelist
Nicholas Sparks pushes all the right
buttons in This endearing tear-jerker
from EOne Entertainment now
unfolding at Cineplex odeon theatres
around B.C.
Multi-year stories are nothing new
In The romance department. Smart
direction and truly wise casting by way
of Michael Hoffman show the trials
and tribulations two people endure
over 20 years. Told in a flashback style
that really works for a change we meet
the young Amanda Collier and boy
from the other part of town Dawson
Cole. It's important to this tale to see
how an unusual friendship developed
for these two way back in those heady
high school years with both Liana
Liberato and Luke Bracey turning in
memorable portrayals. Harsh is the
difference in upbringing between this

pair with our young lad really put

through the grinder by a hillbilly dad
played with no mercy .
How relationships endure and stumble
over time is delightfully projected by
the tender portrayal of a lost in love
adult James Marsden and Michelle
Monaghan who truly rise to the
challenge. Touching at times The Best
of Me is truly a superior romance
showing the bonds of love and the
struggle for friendship. Lots of "side"
issues creep to the surface involving
bullying
And other social ills that are cleverly
used to drive the motivations of the
characters forward.
People who dismiss Nicholas Sparks'
stories as being all the same and just
for teenage girls and women are wrong
and missing out. The Best of Me offers
first class acting, an interesting story
and is a tender date movie. Guys take
note!

SPORTS
Vancouver Canucks Linden Vey Making Most Of NHL
TIMES

Linden Vey wasnt about to let his first

legitimate NHL shot pass him by.
Stuck behind a long line of talented
centres in the Los Angeles Kings
organization, the 23-year-old was
given a new lease on his hockey life
when the Vancouver Canucks acquired
him in a trade at Junes NHL draft for a
second-round pick.
Vey was almost immediately penciled
into rookie head coach Willie
Desjardins lineup, but that served as
little comfort heading into training
camp last month.
Just because youre supposed to
be slotted in or youre given an
opportunity, its about earning things,
Vey said after Wednesdays practice at
Rogers Arena. If you dont produce
its easy to find yourself on the outside
looking in. Every day is a new day
and youve got to continue to produce
and continue to prove that you belong
here.
The soft-spoken forward has done that
and more in the early going, scoring
his first NHL goal in the third period
of Saturday nights dramatic 5-4 comefrom-behind shootout victory over the
Edmonton Oilers.
Desjardins coached Vey for three full
seasons when the two were with the
WHLs Medicine Hat Tigers, and
while that familiarity didnt hurt, it also
provided no guarantees.
He was given that chance right off
the start, said Desjardins. It was his
history that got him that chance
what hes done in the past and then
he did everything he needed to keep
that spot.
Vey said there were mixed emotions

Shot

after he was dealt to the Canucks, but

he could also do the math and knew
the quickest route to the NHL probably
wasnt going to be with the Kings.
Youre excited to move and get a new
opportunity, but youre leaving a lot
guys that youve played with a number
of years and thats tough, said the
native of Wakaw, Sask. Im excited to
be here and looking forward to a really
good year.
Selected 96th overall by the Kings
back in 2009, Vey had 55 goals and
103 assists in 191 games with the
AHLs Manchester Monarchs over the
last three seasons, but had yet to score
in 19 NHL contests with the Kings and
Canucks prior to Saturday.
I think its bigger for the player
than for anybody else because hes
more worried about the fact that he
hasnt (scored) and hes had these

opportunities, said Desjardins, whose

team has two wins to start the season.
But for me its getting the chances. If
youre getting the chances, (goals) will
come.
It was a big step for him and now he
doesnt have to worry as much.
Another player who wont have to
worry about opening his account with
the Canucks is Nick Bonino, who also
scored for the first time with his new
team on Saturday.
Its good to get that one out of the way
and its good to get it when you win. I
wanted two things for the home opener
and we got both of them, he said.
Theres always pressure for anyone to
score, but I think weve got four good
lines that can all contribute and have
contributed so far throughout the preseason and the first two games. If that
keeps going it should help us get more

wins.
Veys goal on Saturday night came on
a rejuvenated Canucks power play,
where he has often found himself
patrolling the high slot on the No. 1
unit with Henrik and Daniel Sedin.
The biggest thing is confidence,
said Vey. Obviously theyre great
players and youve got to be ready
because theyre going give you the
puck in situations where other players
wouldnt. But its been great and
hopefully that can continue.
The trade of Ryan Kesler to the
Anaheim Ducks for Bonino and Luca
Sbisa, and the signings of Radim Vrbata
and Ryan Miller grabbed headlines in
Vancouver this off-season, but Vey is
also key to a team that continues to
search for secondary scoring behind
the Sedin twins.
For us to make the playoffs we need
to roll four lines and we need to have
everyone contributing like we had
against the Oilers, said Henrik Sedin.
I dont think you would have seen us
come back in a game like that the past
two years. I think were deeper now,
we have more guys involved that can
score.
While Desjardins knew what he had in
Vey from their time together in junior,
hes been impressed with how those
skills have transferred to the pro game.
Hes good with the puck. I think hes
really good under pressure, said the
coach. He reads pressure so he knows
where to go when guys are coming at
him, and he makes himself available
when other guys are getting pressure.
I think its just his hockey sense thats
kind of helped him.

Three Storylines To Watch When Whitecaps Fc Visit

San Jose Earthquakes On Saturday Night
After their Cascadia Cup-clinching win
over Seattle Sounders FC, Vancouver
Whitecaps FC will look to keep things
rolling on Saturday night when they
visit San Jose Earthquakes at Buck
Shaw Stadium.
KICKOFF: 7:30 p.m. PT TV: TSN1
RADIO: TSN 1410 MOBILE: bell.ca/
mobiletv ONLINE: TSN GO
Here are three storylines to get you set
for the match.
PLAYOFF PUSH
Its coming down to the wire.
With two matches remaining, the Caps
are one point up on Portland Timbers
for the fifth and final playoff position
in the Western Conference.
Vancouvers magic number is now
down to six, meaning any combination
of points earned by Whitecaps FC and

dropped by Portland totaling six will

result in a playoff berth for the Blue
and White. For example, the Caps
would clinch a playoff spot with a win
over San Jose coupled with a Portland
loss to Real Salt Lake on Friday night.
Also of note, Whitecaps FC are one
point away from securing a berth in the
2015/2016 CONCACAF Champions
League.
GUNNING FOR FOUR
The Caps have yet to win four straight
matches since joining MLS in 2011, but
they have a chance to do so Saturday
night in San Jose.
Since their 3-0 loss to Portland on
September 20, Whitecaps FC have
won three straight games against teams
above them in the standings. Theyve
only conceded one goal during that

span and have posted back-to-black

clean sheets most recently against
first-place Seattle Sounders FC, the
second highest scoring team in Major
League Soccer.
Not only would a win on Saturday set
a new record for Vancouvers longest
win streak, it would also result in the
clubs highest point total in MLS,
surpassing their 48-point total in 2013.
GOODBYE BUCK SHAW
Saturday will be San Joses final match
at Buck Shaw Stadium, where they
have been playing since 2008. The
Caps have actually yet to win at the
venue, but Russell Teibert said its a
statistic the team isnt thinking about.
Were not even looking at that,
Teibert told reporters. Were just
looking at playing our hardest and

having each guy give everything they

have. You saw that for yourself last
weekend. Every guy put everything
they had on the table. We played with
heart, we played with desire, and we
played to win like we needed to win.
And we need to win this weekend.
When you have that in the back of your
mind, youre tough to beat.
One player whos all too familiar with
Buck Shaw Stadium is defender Steven
Beitashour, who spent his first three
seasons in MLS with San Jose before
getting traded to Whitecaps FC in the
offseason.
This will be Beitashours first game
back at Buck Shaw. Early this week,
the San Jose native said his ticket
requests have already reached triple
figures.

DIWALI POOJA

Dhanteras
Dhanteras marks the first day of
five-days-long
Diwali
Festival.
Dhanteras Festival, also known as
Dhantrayodashi or Dhanwantari
Triodasi, falls on the auspicious
thirteenth lunar day of Krishna
Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik
(October/November). In the word
Dhanteras, "Dhan" stands for wealth.
On Dhanteras Goddess Laxmi is
worshiped to provide prosperity and
well being. Hence Dhan Teras holds a
lot more significance for the business
community.
Dhanteras Legends
A very interesting story about
Dhanteras Festival says that once the
sixteen year old son of King Hima was
doomed to die by a snake-bite on the
fourth day of his marriage as per his
horoscope. On that particular fourth
day of his marriage his young wife did
not allow him to sleep. She laid all the
ornaments and lots of gold and silver
coins in a big heap at the entrance of
her husband's boudoir and lighted
innumerable lamps all over the place.
And she went on telling stories and
singing songs.

Lakshmi Pooja
Lakshmi was the daughter of the sage
Bhrigu and took refuge in the ocean
of milk when the gods were sent into
exile. Lakshmi was reborn during the
Churning of the Ocean. As soon as
the gods saw Lakshmi, they all fell in
love with her beauty. Shiva claimed
Lakshmi as his wife, but since he had
already taken the Moon, her hand
was given to Vishnu, whom Lakshmi
herself preferred.
Lakshmi is the goddess of light, beauty,
good fortune and wealth. While Laxmi
is generally worshiped to achieve
success, she does not reside long with
anyone who is lazy or desire her only
as wealth.
Steps of Lakshmi Pooja
Spread a new cloth on a raised
platform: Place a handful of grains in
the center and, on this, place a kalash
(pitcher) made of gold, silver, copper,
or terracotta. Fill three-fourth of the
kalash with water and place a betel nut,
a flower, a coin, and some rice grains
in it. Arrange five kinds of leaves or
mango leaves in the kalash. Place a
small dish on the kalash and fill it with
rice grains. Draw a lotus with turmeric

powder ( haldi ) over the rice grains

and place the idol of goddess Lakshmi
over it, along with coins.
Place the idol of Ganesha: In front
of the kalash, on the right (South-West
direction), place the idol of Ganesha.
Also place ink and books related to
your business or occupation on the
platform. Light a lamp and begin the
puja by offering haldi, kumkum, and
flowers to the platform on which the
kalash is placed. Then offer haldi,
kumkum, and flowers to the water that
is to be used for the puja. Invoke the
river goddesses to be part of this water.
Invoke goddess: Lakshmi by reciting
the Vedic mantras addressed to her. One
can also recite the mantras mentioned
in the Puranas or simply take some
flowers in your hands, close your
eyes, and think of goddess Lakshmi
being showered with gold coins by
two elephants standing on either side
of Her and chant Her name. Then offer
the flowers to the idol.
Place the idol of Lakshmi: Place the
idol of Lakshmi in a plate and bathe
it with water, panchamrit (a mixture
of milk, curd, ghee or clarified butter,
honey, and sugar) and then with water

containing some gold ornament or a

pearl. Wipe the idol clean and place
it back on the kalash. Alternately, you
can just sprinkle water and panchamrit
on the idol with a flower.
Offerings: Offer sandal paste, saffron
paste, perfume ( itr ), haldi, kumkum,
abeer, and gulal to the goddess. Offer a
garland of cotton beads to the goddess.
Offer flowers, especially the marigold
flowers and leaves of Bel (wood apple
tree). Light an incense stick and dhoop.
Make an offering of sweets, coconut,
fruits, and tambul. Make an offering
of puffed rice and batasha. Pour some
puffed rice, batasha, coriander seeds,
and cumin seeds over the idol. Safe
where you keep money and jewelry;
Worship this safe as a symbol of Lord
Kuber.
Aarti: Finally, perform the aarti for
goddess Lakshmi. Always remember
that She abhors loud noise. So the aarti
should be accompanied only by a small
bell. Do not clap hands, as is the practice
when performing aarti for other gods.
A peaceful and sublime atmosphere
should prevail during the diwali day
pujan. Do not light crackers while the
puja is on or immediately after it.
