Course Description:
Visual Basic 2005 and Databases is a tutorial that provides a detailed in
troduction to using Visual Basic for accessing and maintaining databases. Topics
covered include: database structure, database design, Visual Basic project buil
ding, ADO .NET data objects, data bound controls, proper interface design, struc
tured query language (SQL), and database reports.
Visual Basic 2005 and Databases is presented using a combination of over
700 pages of course notes and actual Visual Basic examples. No previous experien
ce working with databases is presumed. It is assumed, however, that users of the
course are familiar with the Visual Basic environment and the steps involved in
building a Visual Basic application.
Course Prerequisites:
To grasp the concepts presented in Visual Basic 2005 and Databases, you
should possess a working knowledge of Windows Vista/NT/XP. No previous experien
ce working with databases is presumed. It is assumed, however, that users of th
e course are familiar with the Visual Basic environment and the steps involved i
n building a Visual Basic application (such background can be gained from our Le
arn Visual Basic 2005 course).
You will also need the ability to view and print documents saved in Micr
osoft Word format. This can be accomplished in one of two ways. The first, and
easiest, is that you already have Microsoft Word on your computer. The second
way, and a bit more difficult, is that you can download the Microsoft Word Viewe
r. This is a free Microsoft product that allows viewing Word documents - it is
available for download at KIDwares website for Visual Basic 2005 and Databases:

http://www.kidwaresoftware.com/vb2005db.htm
Finally, and most obvious, you need to have Microsoft Visual Basic 2005. This c
ourse can be completed with either the stand-alone Visual Basic 2005 product (th
e cheaper alternative) or the Visual Basic 2005 that is part of the Visual Studi
o 2005 suite. Although it costs more, we would recommend acquiring Visual Studi
o 2005, rather than Visual Basic 2005. The stand-alone Visual Basic 2005 produc
t is adequate, but has limitations. You need to decide which product is best fo
r your needs. If you are (or want to be) a serious Visual Basic 2005 programmer
, get Visual Studio 2005. And, if you are a college student, look for academic
versions at your bookstore.
Installing Visual Basic 2005 and Databases:
The course notes and code for the shareware version of Visual Basic 2005
and Databases are included in one single ZIP file. Use your favorite unzipping a
pplication to write all files to your computer. The course is included in the f
older entitled VB2005DB. This folder contains two other folders: VB2005DB Note
s and VB2005DB Code.
The VB2005DB Notes folder includes all the notes needed for the class.
Each file in this folder has a DOC extension and is in Microsoft Word. The file
s are:
StartHere.doc This file in Word format
Contents.doc Course Table of Contents
Class 1.doc Class 1. Introducing Visual Basic 2005 and Databases
Class 2.doc Class 2. Introduction to Databases
Class 3.doc Class 3. Database Connection
Class 4.doc Class 4. Database Queries with SQL
Class 5.doc Class 5. Visual Basic 2005 Interface Design

Class 9.doc* Class 9. Database Design Considerations
Class 10.doc* Class 10. Sample Database Projects
Class 11.doc* Class 11. Other Database Topics
(Files marked with a * are not included in the shareware version.) The VB2005DB
Code folder includes all the Visual Basic projects developed during the course.
The applications are further divided into Class folders. Each class folder co
ntains the Visual Basic 2005 and Database project folders. As an example, to op
en the project named Example 1-1 discussed in Class 1, you would go to this dire
ctory:
C:\VB2005DB\VB2005DB Code\Class 1\Example 1-1\
How To Take the Course:
Visual Basic 2005 and Databases is a self-paced course. Each chapter wil
l require a different amount of time. The suggested approach is to decide how m
uch time you can spend each week working through the notes. Print out the notes
one chapter at a time. Then, work through the notes at your own pace. Try to
do each example as it is encountered in the notes. Work through the projects.
If you need any help, all completed projects are included in the VB2005DB Code f
older.

Who Produces Visual Basic 2005 and Databases?
This course has been developed and written by Lou Tylee, a principal par
tner in KIDware, a producer of quality childrens educational programs since 1982.
The course notes have evolved based on Lous experience in writing childrens soft
ware and in teaching a similar course at the university level for over six years
.

Lou has been programming computers since 1969 when he took his first For
tran course in college (yes, Lou is getting old!). He has written software to c
ontrol suspensions for high speed ground vehicles, monitor nuclear power plants,
lower noise levels in commercial jetliners, compute takeoff speeds for jetliner
s, locate and identify air and ground traffic and to let kids count bunnies, lea
rn how to spell and do math problems. His wide breadth of practical experience
is demonstrated in Visual Basic 2005 and Databases. He has been praised for his
clear, reassuring teaching style. Thousands of people have learned to program
using similar notes written by Lou.

During all his programming and writing efforts, Lou is accompanied by C
lara, the KIDware dog. She is always under Lous desk directing his every keystro
ke. She is a primary contributor to this product.
