TILING & PAVERS
We speak to a number
of experts from Amber
about the ins and outs of
outdoor tiling and pavers
What do you need to consider when selecting
an outdoor tile or paver?
Ambers indoor product manager, Kate Lane,
recommends that you consider adjoining
interior living areas when planning outdoor
landscaping and entertaining spaces.
Would you like the same product to ow
into your indoor areas? asks Kate. Do your
chosen products ofer colours that will allow
you to extend your interior scheme into
outdoor living spaces? These questions are
just as important as whether you would like
to create a pattern with the product and what
surface is best for your new outdoor area.
Also, consider which base youll be working
with when determining the best products for
your outdoor spaces. Check with your local
paving store to determine which products
require base reinforcement.
For example, a concrete slab will allow for
porcelain tile or stone. Tiling on the concrete
will lend a more exact and nished look as the
tiles can be glued down with narrow joints and
How to choose pavers
Step 1: Gather ideas on the look you
want to achieve.
Step 2: Choose a style and size of paver
to suit your needs.
Step 3: Select a colour that complements
your area, home and surroundings. The
way you lay the pavers also afects the
overall aesthetic.
Step 4: Measure your area to be paved to
determine the quantity of pavers required
(use the formula length (m) x width (m) =
area (m
2
) for basic square or rectangular
spaces (m = metres).
Step 5: Choose to either DIY or hire a
professional contractor.
Source: Boral
grouted in any colour of choice, similar to tiling
inside. Large-format concrete and clay pavers
will also need a slab for driveway applications.
Flexible road base and river sand is usually
cheaper than pouring a concrete slab, but
would require a thicker stone or porcelain tile
and concrete or clay paver to ensure there
is enough support. Paving using this method
cannot be grouted, however Ambers Interlock
can be used as exible jointing sand.
Another important consideration is the
drainage of your outdoor area. If the correct-
sized strip drain is used, any size tile should
achieve the necessary fall for drainage.
Sub-surface drainage is also critical for any
successful paving job.
What are the best materials to use outdoors?
When it comes to outdoor surface products,
each with their own unique qualities, its a
matter of picking the product that best suits
the environmental conditions and physical
attributes of the site.
Benets of porcelain tiling include its strong
and dense construction that does not require
sealing, says Ambers natural stone manager,
Ryan Adams. Porcelain tiles are also easy to
clean and maintain and are not subject to
ef orescence or salt attack.
Ambers outdoor product manager, Mike
Barden, says, Clay or concrete pavers are
most suitable for outdoor use and, as long as
there is an adequate draining system employed,
the paving will be a success.
Does the size of the tile or paver matter in an
outdoor setting?
According to Kate, the size of the tile or paver will
afect the look and feel of a space. While they
may be trickier to lay, larger products will visually
open up a space, she explains. Conversely,
smaller-sized tiles or pavers will make the space
more intimate.
How are tiles and pavers best maintained?
According to Mike, tiling any outdoor area
requires high slip resistance. As tiles come
in diferent levels of slip resistance, it is
advisable to choose a higher level of resistance
in situations such as pool surrounds and
uncovered areas, he advises.
Concrete and clay pavers are great for
poolscapes. I usually advise customers to
consider a more textured paver for a better non-
slip surface, and always recommend sealing
around any pool area.
Tiles and pavers are easy to clean and, with
a little care, will keep a space looking fresh,
says Kate.
Maintenance of tiles is generally easy, explains
Kate. It is best to use a heavy-duty cleaner for
grease and dirt build-up; dilute the cleaner and
apply with a wide-bristled deck broom, followed
by a pH-neutral cleanser. Be careful if using
chlorine or bleach-based cleaning products to
protect your garden from any run-of.
With natural stone and clay or concrete
pavers, Amber recommends protecting
surfaces with a high-quality penetrating sealer.
Acidic and abrasive cleaners should always be
avoided in favour of a pH-neutral cleaner for
day-to-day maintenance.
General tips:
Always look at pavers outside in the
natural light.
Select pavers that match internal oor
coverings to ensure the transition from
indoors to out is subtle and blends with
your decorating style.
When paving a small space, keep
the design simple and use a neutral-
coloured, large-format paver to create
a sense of space.
Large-format pavers speed up the
laying process.
If paving a slope, start at the bottom
and pave up the slope.

Hot tip: use a neutral base
for colourful outdoor design
When livening up an outdoor space,
its a ne line between tasteful pops of
colour and jarring clashes. Boral says the
key to striking a balance is using neutral
base colours.
As with interiors, the base colour of
an outdoor area is important in creating
the overall look and feel of the space,
explains Paula Shuggi, product manager
at Boral Masonry. A neutral base can
help balance the geometric art patterns
and the green, blue and orchid shades
that will prove popular for outdoor
accessories this year.
Neutral pavers are a durable and
exible option for creating a blank canvas.
A timeless shade, such as beige or cream,
gives homeowners the option to easily
upgrade the outdoor space with new
accessories as colours trend and seasons
change, adds Paula.
With a wide range of neutral
pavers available, the choice can be
overwhelming. In making a decision,
homeowners should rst consider the
homes indoor colour scheme.
Extending the design elements of
indoor spaces to the outdoors creates
a seamless ow, says Paula. If space is
limited, lighter pavers in cream and stone
can make the space appear larger. For
those looking to make a strong statement,
darker-coloured pavers are ideal for
ofsetting bold and bright colours.
These 20mm porcelain pavers by Ceramica Panaria
are very practical as they can be easily laid, removed
and reused. They are also strong as they resist
breaking loads more than 1000kg per 60x60cm. As
they are acid resistant, no treatments are needed. Lay
on a screed with glue, on grass or adjustable paving
supports. Tile Boutique, tileboutique.com.au

S
tone has an organic and timeless look which ts
into most outdoor areas, says Ambers natural
stone manager, Ryan Adams. The natural variation
in stone also gives an individual feel over time,
particularly as stone develops a natural patina.
Stone will generally have a non-slip nish, which makes it a practical
choice for outdoor areas.
Geographic location is an important factor when choosing stone,
which can be eroded by salt if not sealed properly. Stone surrounding
a saltwater pool also requires specialised sealers to address erosion risk.
When looking for the most ideal surface for a path, Ryan recommends
multi-sized pattern stones. Selecting a French or Roman pattern can
give your path another point of interest and will also help accommodate
any curves, he advises.
When it comes to pools, limestone, travertine and sandstone are all
great products. Not only do they look great, they also do not conduct
heat and will stay cool to the feet, even on the hottest days. Granite is
another safe option as it is an extremely non-slip surface.
For driveways, natural stone cobbles granite and quartz, for example
are a practical and attractive option that can give a landscaping
project a continual wow factor.

Tip: Also consider the stones
porosity, durability, maintenance
requirements, colours, the area it will

and, of course, your budget . Its best
to speak to an expert who can guide
you in these areas.
What stone is right for you?
Natural stone is available in what seems to be an innite variety
of paving, walling, furniture and garden decor and includes
locally quarried products as well as imported stone. Natural
stone may not always be the cheapest option but the efect cant
be compared to many man-made products. Here are some of
the most often-used natural stones:
Limestone: Has a granular texture with bands of colour throughout.
It is similar to sawn sandstone and can be quite porous, however
sealants help prevent staining. Often used as paving (in a range of
nishes), it can also be used for coping and walling.
Granite: Available in a variety of earthy colours, from soft grey and
Blush Brown to cream, with varying amounts of the smaller crystals
and aggregates showing. Use inside or outside and choose from
a wide range of nishes, including sandblasted, honed and ribbed,
which ofer a diferent texture, feel and look.
Sandstone: A traditional Australian favourite suitable for architectural
applications and landscaping as well as statues and garden
ornaments, sandstone is available in hues such as cream, Salmon
Pink and Soft Orange, with veins of lighter or darker shades washing
through. Choose sawn dimension-cut pieces for a more formal
appearance or for a rustic look, agstone, in a variety of shapes and
sizes, can be used for crazy paving. Sandstone is quite porous and
stains if not properly sealed or regularly cleaned.
Bluestone: A strong and dense ne-grain type of basalt that
comes in various shades of grey, bluestone works well with a
variety of styles and can be used indoors or outdoors. It has
high salt-resistance and low porosity, making it ideal for wet
areas. Available in numerous textures, from smooth honed
surfaces to coarser sawn nishes, it is mainly used as paving,
pool coping or wall capping.
Travertine: A denser form of limestone with a marble-like nish,
available in stronger colours such as ivory, pale cofee or beige
and without the granular variance of limestone or sandstone.
It is usually sold as dimension-cut pieces with either a smooth
nish or more weathered appearance, where the stone has
been tumbled to leave it pitted and aged. Travertine can be used
for paving, coping or walling.

the test of time. Once sealed, its easy to maintain and the natural stone will last much longer than man-made products, reducing the need to replace pavers when they fade. Teakwood
sandstone is available in tiles, pavers, wall cladding, lightweight wall cladding, pool coping and step treads, with nishes available in honed, sandblasted, rock face and bullnose. Cinajus,
cinajus.com 3, 5 & 7. Staining is the most common problem afecting porous materials, such as stone paving and steps, but there are also other common types of damage. Water can
be harmless but if stone or paving is wet for long enough, mould and bacteria can take hold and the material can be softened and weakened. Water also contains minerals (salts) that
can leave unsightly residues or stains and even cause major corrosion of pavers and tiles. Sealers, such as these from Dry-Treat, protect porous surfaces. Dry-Treat, drytreat.com 4. High-
quality Australian bluestone ofers lasting beauty and enduring elegance. Wistow bluestone is the natural choice. This richly coloured, ageless Australian stone is perfect for any outdoor

All natural stone varieties have diferent qualities and limitations.
According to Jim Mann from Stone Initiatives and the Australian Stone
Advisory Association, granite is considered one of the most enduring
and versatile stones because of its good looks and durability. It never
goes out of fashion and has a multitude of uses, says Jim. For around
the pool area, sandstone and limestone are industry favourites and
Jim says there are several reasons why. It comes in soft, neutral
colours, sandstone and limestone are cool underfoot and sandstone,
in particular in a sawn nish, is very slip-resistant, says Jim. For
scratch resistance, choose granite for paths or high-traf c areas.
Granite has a high quartz composition, meaning its highly abrasive-
resistant, he adds. Australian Stone Advisory Association, asaa.com.au

TURNING TO
TIMBER
The use of timber can really transform an
outdoor space into something spectacular,
and here in Australia were blessed with a
multitude of beautiful species to choose from.
Clinton Skeoch from Boral Timber tells us how
to select decking timber to transform your
outdoor space
Words: Danielle Townsend
A
ustralian hardwood species, such
as blackbutt, spotted gum and
river reds are excellent choices for
decking because of their high density,
toughness, colour spectrum, natural
beauty and durability. A species hardness level can be
identied according to its Janka rating the higher the
rating, the greater the hardness.
Blackbutt and spotted gum species are particularly
suitable for homeowners in bushre-prone areas as they
are both classied as bushre-resisting timbers when
used in accordance with Australian Standard AS3959.
It is important home renovators select a decking
timber that has the right strength for the job. For outdoor
living and entertainment spaces, extra-strong and durable
materials may be required. Boral Timbers commercial
decking 135x32mm-sized boards boast a greater load
capacity than standard decking. Commercial decking
products are often adopted by homeowners wanting to
achieve a more industrial look.
Once installed, Australian hardwood decking timber is
easily nished with clear decking oil or a stain, or can be
left to weather and turn a soft silver-grey.
Cleaning and maintaining a timber deck will help to
preserve the colour and improve the life of the deck.
When cleaning a deck with a specialised cleaning
product, loose dirt or garden residue should rst be
swept away. To help restore an existing deck to its
original appearance, homeowners can simply sand and
coat with a decking nish to the exposed surfaces.
Boral decking is ofered in a vast range of Australian
hardwood species, which are seasoned for our climate
and can blend harmoniously with any style of garden or
entertainment area. Boral Timber has achieved Australian
Forestry Standard (AFS) chain of custody certication
(AS4707-2006) for its timber products, ensuring its
hardwood decking is sourced from certied, legal and
sustainably managed resources.

TIMBER
AUSTRALIAN LIVING
Timber used outdoors adds a real natural softness to a
home. It is a sustainable choice because it is a renewable
resource and it can be purchased as a recycled item or
with an accreditation of Chain of Custody. There are
cladding systems that are made from recycled timber
too. These, when painted, can give you a modern
appearance that doesnt show the obvious use of timber.
However, in using timber outside, you must regularly
protect the timber from rotting. It is organic, after all, and
will break down if not looked after.

STYLISH STRUCTURES
Considering a pergola? Weve got you covered
Words: John Storch
S
pending time outside is part of the Australian way of life.
However, in some of the colder areas of Australia, we are
often driven inside more than wed like. On the other hand,
in some of the hotter areas, protection from the sun is
paramount. Hence, the pergola has become a backyard
essential, catering for these two weather extremes. Its possible to create a
comfortable and cosy space to help you get the most of your pergola and
your outdoor living areas all year round.
Pergolas are versatile and can be either free-standing structures or linked
to the house. They can act as a destination in their own right or perhaps
integrated with a tennis court, swimming pool or alfresco entertaining area.
A pergola does not need to be elaborate or showy to bring you
enjoyment. A simple timber-posted pergola entwined with a wisteria vine,
part covered with an awning over a paved or decked area is all you need
to shelter you from the elements. Add a lounge, a pedestal barbecue,
some outdoor lighting and a portable patio heater for chillier weather and
you are set for your outdoor lifestyle.
If luxury is what you crave, an extravagant approach to a pergola can
also be taken to create an outdoor room. This might include a covered
and enclosed pergola structure that is fully equipped with bathroom
facilities, an outdoor kitchen with pizza oven, wok and barbecue, a at-
screen TV and state-of-the-art sound system, designer outdoor dining and
lounge suites and in-built daybeds for relaxing.
Five things to consider before you start building:
1 Decide how you intend to use your pergola
Take into account the size of your property and what you can t within
it, your entertainment needs, the size of your family and the future needs
of your children. Integrate the pergola with the rest of the landscape
and ensure an easy ow between the outdoor room pergola, the house
and any other garden spaces and outdoor entertaining areas. Ensure the
design complements the architecture of the house and is exible enough
to cater for a variety of functions from a dinner party for mum and dads
friends to a get-together for the kids.
Adequate weather protection is important to consider as it can mean
the diference between the space getting used often or not, so some
kind of roong is essential. This could be a solid tiled roof, a clear
polycarbonate roof, a thatched roof, an operable louvre system, an
awning, shade sail or simply an umbrella.
Then there is heating and cooling. Good orientation and the use of
louvred walls or roofs can help to heat a space by restricting cold winds
as well as help cool a space by maximising cool breezes. A ceiling fan
can aid as well. For heating, there are radiant electric heaters, outdoor
replaces, chimeneas and braziers, or gas patio and tabletop heaters.
2 Budget
Consider the budget you are setting aside for the project. Its easy to get
carried away when you look at what can be designed for your home.
After youve made your inspiration board and mentally designed your
dream pergola, its probably time for a reality check. Can you aford
your dream? If not, dont despair. Often there are many lower-cost
alternatives you can consider. For example, resurfacing existing concrete
paving with an epoxy paint can create a stunning oor surface, but at
This traditional timber
pergola is integrated
with both a cabana
and pool.
32 | OUTDOOR PRODUCT GUIDE
a fraction of the price. Or, rather than undertaking all the work at once,
you may need to stage the project over a period of time.
If the project will be staged, consider what needs to be undertaken
and when so that jobs nished earlier do not need to be ripped up at a
later stage to complete later work. An example of bad planning could
be placing the new paving in rst, only to realise later that drainage was
not allowed for or the cabling needs to be installed under the paving for
lighting at a later date.
If you cant aford the nish you want now, you can always wait. The
most expensive nishes are not always the best but if you cant aford
your rst choice now, youre better of waiting rather than settling for
second best. In the long term, you will have no regrets.
3 Authority approval
Before commencing the design for a pergola, always check the
requirements of council and other authorities. Some simple pergolas
are exempt from the approval process, but it depends on both the local
council and the pergola. Factors that can inuence council approval
include the size and type of pergola, its position on your property and
your location, among other things.
Always check property titles to ensure your property is not
encumbered with covenants or easements that may restrict building
within certain areas of the property, using certain materials or
preventing structures being built over a certain height.
4 Design
To ensure a successful end result for the pergola, there are many design
factors to consider, such as which direction will the pergola face and
what impact will that have on the amount of sun or shade you get? What
kind of weather protection will you need? Are there views that need to
be maximised (or avoided)? Will the space be overlooked by neighbours,
compromising privacy? Do you want running water for cooking or
bathing facilities or electricity for TVs or lighting (in which case you need
to consider your plumbing and cabling needs)?
Flexibility of use is also very important. The space must be able to be used
for the family and also to accommodate larger numbers at Christmas and
birthdays and, of course, it must look great at the same time.
If the design becomes too dif cult, or your want something unique,
employ a landscape architect that specialises in this area to help with both
the design and, possibly, the approval process. This is a great way to make
sure your pergola meets council approval without getting bogged down
in red tape, as well as providing you with a tailored product to suit your
property exclusively. It can even save you money! It is false economy not
to engage professional design assistance for at least an initial consultation
to set you in the right direction for your project.
Finally, the most important component of the design is to integrate and
unify the space with the ow of the entertaining area, the garden and the
overall property, taking into account your lifestyle, the style of the house,
all aesthetic and functional considerations, such as associated areas like
swimming pools and tennis courts, to create a nished product that both
enhances your lifestyle and adds immeasurable resale value to the home.
5 Accessories
Consider any accessories you want. Accessories can add to both the
visual aesthetics and usefulness of the project. Some accessories may also
require supporting materials or services, such as electric wiring, conduits

or switching, that may impact on your design, to accommodate them, so
should be considered in the rst stages of the project.
Outdoor accessories incorporating soft furnishings, including outdoor
bean bags, cushions and throw rugs, together with feature homewares
such as scented candles, sculpture, furniture and art, individualise an
outdoor space and can range from mass-produced items to expensive
one-of items tailored to your own project. Other commonly utilised
accessories may include lighting, ceiling fans, heaters, air conditioning,
xed and retractable awnings, built-in daybeds and seating, barbecues,
kitchenettes and storage cupboards.
Clearly, when designing a pergola, you need to consider many
factors the overall look and style of the home and garden, the
lifestyle needs of the owners, the available budget and the constraints
(or opportunities) the site poses.
Top-ve design tips
1. Look through magazines, keep copies of all ideas you want to
incorporate in the design and a few of the things you dont like.
2. Dont think of the pergola project in isolation. When the area
is a mess with builders, now is the chance to renovate the rest of
the outside as well. Think about renovating the adjacent spaces
are the lawn and garden in the right places? Is the paved area big
enough? Think of the total concept.
3. The style must be compatible but not necessarily the same as
the house. If possible, use the same materials and pick up the same
colours of the house.
4. Renovate in winter when you wont be using the pool and are
less likely to use your outdoor areas (you are also more likely to get
a better price at this time of year).
5. Have fun with the design. Remember, you are the one who will
use it. If you want uorescent furnishings, revolving disco lights and
a girafe slide, go for it.
Issues of function and aesthetics need to be considered in tandem so
that the design has longevity and is part of a seamless ow between the
interior of the home and its outdoor areas. If you can achieve great ow,
layout and materials, your outdoor room pergola will function like an
extension of your home and provide your family with somewhere they
can sit, relax, entertain and simply enjoy the great Australian outdoors.

TOP DECK
Whether youre looking to expand your
living space or beautify a yard, a deck
could be the way to go

A
ustralians love the outdoors, and a decent
outdoor area can be enjoyed almost all year
round. Whether its for entertaining or just
your own private getaway, adding a deck is
a relatively quick and inexpensive process, in
some cases taking no more than a single weekend. With
plenty of diferent design options and materials available,
there is certain to be a deck that is right for you.
Materials
Selecting the right material for your deck is largely
about personal preference and the surrounding
environment. Hardwood timbers such as blackbutt,
spotted gum or river reds are very popular for decks.
Their high density, toughness and durability make
them ideal for Australian conditions. Blackbutt and
spotted gum species have re-resistant properties,
making them suitable for homes in bushre-prone
areas, says Clinton Skeoch from Boral Timber.
For those who like the look of natural timber but are
concerned about maintenance or weather, timber
look-alike aluminium decking might be the answer.
Brendan Galway from Knotwood says, It is lightweight,
easy to install, stronger than wood so can hold heavier
loads, is impervious to insect infestations, and you dont
have to worry about splitting or rotting.
Composite-timber products are another durable
option. Made of a mix of wood bres and plastic resins,
they dont need to be oiled or pre-treated and are
also resistant to moisture, rotting and termites. Wood

DECKING
composite is environmentally friendly and most people
are unable to tell the diference between composite
timber and regular wood.
The look
Youre going to want to get plenty of use out of your
new or refurbished deck, so getting the right look is vital.
When it comes to deciding on the appearance of your
deck, all materials come with a wide range of nishes.
Consider what will work well with the rest of your homes
exterior and surroundings and how exposed the deck will
be to harsh sunlight and wild weather.
Hardwoods are easy to stain to coordinate with an
outdoor colour scheme, says Clinton. Or they can be left
untreated to create a natural, weathered look.
Decking, both horizontal and vertical, can improve
the appearance of unsightly walls and fences and cover
uneven ground. Screens and enclosures also add a
new look and can give your outdoor area even greater
versatility. Homeowners can spruce up their outdoor
spots by getting creative with colour and space and adding
some personal touches, explains Clinton. Add some
foliage, furniture and soft furnishings to nish of the look.
Installation and maintenance
When it comes to building a deck, its best to leave it to
a professional, advises Clinton. Consulting a licensed
builder, architect or engineer can help to ensure all
building codes and Australian Standards are adhered
to. In addition, depending on the scope of the deck,
detailed plans and building approvals may be required.
The look, colour and life of a deck can be improved
by some basic cleaning and maintenance. Loose dirt
and garden residue should be swept of before applying
any treatments or specialised cleaning products. Even
aluminium and composite-wood decks should be regularly
swept clear of dirt to avoid mould growing in the cracks.
If youre just looking to improve the appearance of a
deck that is showing its age, try sanding down your deck
and coating exposed surfaces with decking nish to get
it looking like new again.
Hardwood hints:
When placing hardwood decking, allow the
planks to acclimatise to your yard for a few days
before installation to avoid swelling or gaps in
your nished deck.
A hardwoods Janka rating indicates its hardness.
The higher the rating, the harder the wood and the
more resistance to denting and wear.
Discuss your options for materials with your builder
or timber merchant, and make sure theyre not using
imported or rainforest timbers.

YOUR PLACE
IN THE SHADE
A range of shady solutions for
every outdoor space
Words: Sean E. Britten
40 | OUTDOOR PRODUCT GUIDE
S
ometimes, you just need to step outside
and get a breath of fresh air to take your mind
of things. This is where the outdoor room
steps in. Not only are outdoor rooms great for
quiet contemplation, they are also perfect for
entertaining, and with Australias temperamental climate,
you need a place thats shady and cool in summer and
equally protected from the elements in winter. Whether
you want a little or a lot of shade, there are a number of
diferent options to consider:
Pergolas & awnings
Awnings are a versatile addition to any outdoor space
and they can be installed as permanent, demountable
or retractable sources of shade. Awnings can be cut
to a variety of sizes and shapes to suit diferent homes
and most are of quite sturdy construction, making
them ideal for standing up to areas with high winds
and heavy downpours.
Retractable awnings have the advantage of
shading an area from heat or rain when you need
it, but opening it up when conditions are just right.
Retractable awnings are the most efective and
energy ef cient way to keep your house cool in
summer, then allowing the sun in during winter. And
they allow more ventilation in the home by protecting
windows and doors from rain, says Andrew Perry from
Outrigger Awnings.
Both permanent and retractable awnings have
canopies that come in a range of materials. Some will
allow natural light to lter through while still providing
a source of shade. There are awnings that will be more
tting for either older or newer homes, or will require
less maintenance than others, so consider what type
best suits your needs. When looking at materials for
awnings or shade sails, Andrew suggests to make sure
your manufacturer uses premium-quality UV-treated
fabrics that reect heat and glare.
Umbrellas
The humble umbrella can often be overlooked among
the many options for shade systems on todays market.
However, modern shade umbrellas come in a wide
variety of colours, shapes and sizes, as well as options
for ease of use.
Cantilever umbrellas and awnings, in particular, are
proof that the technology that goes into umbrellas has
come a long way in recent years and these products
have become extremely popular on the Australian
market. Its easy to see why; cantilever umbrellas are
stylish and exible, some designs featuring a 360
range of shade, and they are great for space saving.
Our cantilevered carports are very popular as they
are perfect for small spaces, with poles only on one
side, says Andrew. They can also be demountable so
council approval is usually not required.

Shade sails
For keeping the sun of your head, shade sails are a simple
and practical solution. Shade sails can be used to give a
truly unique appearance to your home or outdoor area as
they can be designed in almost any shape, size or colour
that you desire. The typical shade sail is square, rectangular
or triangular, curved around the edges and tends to give
of a nautical appearance.
Shade sails can be installed af xed to your house, over
a patio or verandah, or free standing in the middle of the
yard. For added exibility, there are also retractable shade
sails which, like retractable awnings, give you a greater
range of options for your outdoor space, and demountable
sails. Demountable sails can be classed as umbrellas, also
often not needing council approval, says Andrew.
Blinds
The versatility of external shade blinds is often under-rated
as, in addition to windows, blinds can be used for outdoor
verandahs, pergolas and balconies. Most manufacturers
will provide a range of colours and fabrics to suit your
home and decor.
Some materials, such as mesh blinds, have the
advantage of creating shade and blocking harmful UV rays
without blanketing the view from your outdoor area. They
can also reduce noise. Tracks can be used to seal out all
wind and rain, explains Andrew.
Bali huts & gazebos
Bali huts and thatched-roof gazebos are another shade-
providing option and can give your outdoor area a tropical
resort air. These huts come in a range of shapes and sizes
to suit your outdoor space.
The natural grass materials used in creating the roofs
of many thatched-roof huts can also provide shade that is
considerably cooler than other synthetic materials.

Tip 1 Make sure the product you choose is saving you
energy in the long run. Opt for an energy-ef cient product that
could save you money on heating and cooling costs. Block-

with the innovative cellular structure are ideal choices.
Tip 2 Consider the orientation of your home when
selecting your window furnishings. As the amount of heat
received by a window will vary according to the orientation
and time of year, products that provide excellent heat and glare
control are great for windows that get a lot of sun exposure.
Tip 3 Colour is important when it comes to shading
solutions. Darker colours are better for glare control,
whereas lighter materials are better for light control
and daytime privacy.
Tip 4 Choose a product that helps you make the best

ON TOP OF THE WORLD
The roof is usually the largest external surface area of a house and its material
selection heavily impacts both performance and aesthetic longevity

R
oof tiles are a classic solution with long-term benets,
according to roof tile specialist Boral, which encourages
homeowners to consider the diversity of todays concrete
and terracotta tiles. With ongoing advances in materials,
nishes, colours and proles, tiles ofer numerous benets.
With good design and planning, tiles can contribute to energy
savings when heating and cooling a home, says Charlie Condo, general
manager of Boral Roong. Up to 35 per cent of a homes interior
temperature is gained or lost through the ceiling.
Climatic and environmental conditions are also key inuences
when selecting a roong solution. Made to Australian standards, Boral
roof tiles are salt-safe and frost-resistant, which makes them ideal for
most Australian projects.
When selecting roof tiles, consider your homes location, whether
it is surrounded by bushland or near the ocean, your desired shape
and colour, as well as extra benets, such as sarking reective foil
insulation that increases a homes energy ef ciency.
Style preference is often another important element to consider, says
Charlie. Those set on a colour or look may not be aware of compatible
colour and prole alternatives available in concrete and terracotta tiles.
There is literally a tile to suit most architectural styles and exterior nishes.
In functional concrete or stylish terracotta, Boral roof tiles are ofered
in many diferent colours and proles. Built to last, most roof tiles come
with a 50-year warranty against defects. Once tiles are installed, in most
instances, little or no maintenance is required. Should a section become
damaged, there is the added benet of seamless single-tile replacement.
However, Charlie does advise owners of homes more than 25 years
old to pay attention to their roofs, especially if the original materials
are still in place. Major weather events, including extreme rainfall,
can have a serious impact on the state of a roof, he explains. Forty-
ve per cent of reroong projects are the result of a leak, which
indicates vigilance is critical to maintaining the structural health of
a home. Being aware of the state of the roof can give homeowners
peace of mind during wet and windy conditions.

A study reveals tiled roofs are better than
corrugated steel for energy savings
H
omeowners can save money on electricity and gas bills
by using tiles instead of corrugated steel for their roofs,
according to a study conducted by the Roong Tile
Association of Australia at The University of Newcastle.
The study shows that homeowners can save
the most of their cooling costs if they use dark-coloured roof
tiles instead of corrugated steel. Roof tiles reect more heat than
corrugated steel roong, reducing the need for articial cooling.
Michael Monro, marketing manager at Australian roong supplier Bristile
Roong, says, Roof tiles reect more heat away from the home than
metal roong of the same colour. This means the roof tile has a lower solar
absorption rate and, therefore, saves homeowners money.
Roof tiles also absorb 31 per cent fewer decibels of noise from traf c,
aircraft and extreme weather conditions than sheet metal.
When damaged, tiles are also much easier and less expensive to
replace than a full sheet of metal products, explains Michael.
Roof materials are vital in creating
energy-ef cient homes for all climates
When designing, constructing or buying a house, consideration of the
climatic conditions, building materials used and orientation of a property
are critical, says Bristile Roong.

local environment are maximised, that houses remain cool in summer
and warm in winter and, ultimately, use less energy.
Buildings in climate zones with hot, dry summers and mild winters
experience higher cooling than heating loads. In these climate zones,
materials that reect heat, such as roof tiles, are benecial in reducing
a buildings cooling load by reecting a large amount of thermal
heat.Tests in the USA revealed that when concrete roof tiles and metal
roong are of a comparable colour, roof tiles achieved 7.8 per cent
higher reectivity than that of metal roong.
Roof materials can reect maximum heat away from the home and
minimise the need for articial cooling by releasing heat build-up within
the house.Roof materials such as roof tiles have the additional benet
of slowly absorbing heat during the day in summer, storing it and then
gradually releasing it at night. An efective roong system should also

1. Select the material: It is
important to understand the
diferences between terracotta

All roof tiles have benets.
Terracotta can increase a
homes resale value and both
terracotta and concrete are

Terracotta is one of the only
roong products where
the colour never fades. Its
properties make it a timeless,
natural and beautiful product

combine insulation, ventilation and roof sarking using high-quality
materials that are strong and moisture-proof.
Research reveals the most energy-ef cient
roong material
The choice of roong material has a major role in determining internal
living temperatures and, therefore, household energy usage.
Research in the USA comparing (white) roof tiles and (white) metal roong
showed that roof tiles have signicantly higher reectivity than metal roong,
reecting a total of 75.4 per cent of solar energy 7.8 per cent more
reection than metal roong, which reected a total 67.6 per cent.
Due to the high thermal mass of a roof tile, any heat absorbed
dissipates as it transfers through the material. It is then stored and
gradually released at night when the temperature is cooler.
Roong materials can make a valuable contribution to the overall thermal
ef ciency of the home, keeping it cool in summer and warm in winter,
says Michael. Roong materials minimise the need for articial heating
and cooling by reducing external temperature uctuation. This impacts the
internal temperature of the house. Constructing an energy-ef cient home
has never been so important.

ROOFING MATERIALS
ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS
Your homes roof must protect against the elements, support the structure, bring the
various areas of a home together and add to the overall architectural appeal. These
roong materials are tough enough to withstand our harsh Australian climate
CONCRETE
Concrete roof tiles are both versatile and cost-efective. Their sleek,
stylish aesthetic and diverse colour range make them ideal for modern
Australian architecture. Ofering durability, thermal and acoustic
performance, low maintenance and re-resistance, concrete roong
also provides salt-resistance for coastal dwellings.
COPPER
A more expensive option than other materials available, copper is
an investment. Able to last for more than 100 years, copper has
outstanding durability, needs little to no maintenance and is 100
per cent recyclable. Flexible and lightweight, copper requires less
support and, therefore, poses less stress on a homes structure. These
characteristics also mean a copper roof will not bend or crack in a
natural disaster. Copper suits sharp, modern architecture.
ZINC
Also able to last more than a century, zinc has an extraordinary ability to
heal itself. Once laid, zinc develops a layer of zinc hydroxyl-carbonate
that blocks moisture and chemicals from penetrating. If this layer is ever
scratched or broken, it reforms over time. A benecial environmental
factor of zinc is its low toxicity levels. It is 100 per cent recyclable and the
water run-of from a zinc roof doesnt carry excess chemicals that may
harm surrounding soil and groundwater supplies. In addition to being very
strong, zincs thermal properties have seen savings of up to 20-30 per
cent of air-conditioning bills due to the materials reective qualities.
ALUMINIUM
Recent technological innovations have seen a resurgence in the popularity
of aluminium roong. It wont crack, warp, rust or burn and is also a great
reector of heat. Made of 90 per cent recyclable materials, aluminium is
fully recyclable and can last for decades before requiring maintenance.

TERRACOTTA
Terracotta (literally baked earth in Italian) is a natural clay-based ceramic
that can be glazed or unglazed and is extremely hardwearing and
versatile.Used throughout history as a roong material, when it comes
to performance and colour, nothing lasts longer than terracotta. These
tiles are the premium choice for roong and reroong as they withstand
Australias harsh elements and provide thermal insulation, keeping the
heat out and the cool in during summer.Used for centuries on the roofs
of Australian homes, terracotta is popular due to its durability and colour
retention. Made from a selection of natural clays then kiln-red into shape,
these tiles have gorgeous character and excellent thermal and acoustic
properties. They are also resistant to re, frost and salt and require little
maintenance. Terracotta roof tiles ofer a multitude of other practical
benets, including a colour-for-life warranty, durability and natural density,
making them ideal for both acoustic and thermal insulation. When outside
temperatures uctuate, the thermal mass of roof tiles reduces inside
temperature extremes by absorbing thermal energy and releasing it later
when the surrounding atmosphere is cooler.

S
electing the right outdoor lighting to suit
your budget and style can often be an
overwhelming process. For this reason, it is
not uncommon to nd that exterior lighting
frequently falls by the wayside when
budgeting for a landscape design.
Brisbane-based designer Nick Moore says
outdoor lighting is extremely important as it can
add dimension to a seemingly at and dull exterior.
While architectural lighting is predominantly used
along pathways or staircases, decorative lighting adds
to the overall atmosphere of a space in addition to
casting practical illumination. The availability of good
landscape lighting products has exploded in the last
few years, says Nick, emphasising that it doesnt
require massive expenditure to get efective landscape
lighting. In saying that, it is essential that quality is
not compromised in favour of price. Considering that
exterior lighting is constantly exposed to the elements,
a certain level of quality is required to ensure
longevity. Additionally, for those residing in coastal
areas, it is imperative that marine-grade stainless-steel
nishes are used. Its also important to recognise that
no matter how well built or innovative your selected
products are, it means nothing if your outdoor lighting
isnt properly installed. Taking this into consideration,
it is vital to seek advice and source a landscape
contractor who can condently tackle the job for an
appropriate price. If you nd yourself unsure about
installation, Nick advises that you simply allow for
conduit through your landscape such as into garden
beds and along and under paths so youve still got the
option post construction.
Another aspect of the design process that must be
carefully considered is lighting placement. Id say

placement to key areas. Good lighting is like cooking
its very easy to oversalt the broth, says Nick. In
keeping with this less-is-more approach, something
as simple as the installation of uplights against a
dry-stone wall can be all it takes to create a stunning
feature in your outdoor area.
With an abundance of styles to choose from,
designers Kim Bristow and Anya Hagen from Graphite
Interior Design reinforce the importance of continuity.
Outdoor lighting should freely follow on from the
style adopted inside the home as your exterior space
is an extension of the interior design. In light of this,
it is important to opt for traditional light ttings if
your interior space channels a more classic design.
However, if youre looking to create a contemporary
vibe, exterior oor and table lamp lights are
increasingly becoming popular choices, with several
innovative design developments occurring in this area.
Exterior applications of LED lighting are also currently
on trend. While installation of LED systems can be
more expensive, the price is ofset by its economic
value and its diversity in application and designs.

HEAD OUTSIDE TO WARM UP
The popularity of alfresco living has meant outdoor heating is fast
becoming a growing trend

f the temperature has fallen, outdoor heaters
enable entertaining alfresco to continue
throughout the year. The clever blending of
outdoor spaces with internal living areas to create
alfresco zones is an excellent example of the
new thinking in home design, says Nicholas Agnew
from Agnews Fireplaces in Melbourne. We now have
a selection of wood- and gas-red heating systems for
use in outdoor spaces. As the trend towards alfresco
entertainment areas gathers popularity, these outdoor
heating systems give people year-round access to their
courtyard and balcony spaces.
Once the decision about the replace system is
made, it becomes a decorating one. The focus is
then on selecting from the array of replace furniture
available, mantlepieces and surrounds in timber and
stone, hearths, grates and fascias to create the desired
efect within the space.

OUTDOOR FURNITURE & RUGS
O
utdoor furniture design has
signicantly developed over the past
few years. With an abundance of
products currently on the market,
selecting quality furniture to suit your
location can be a tricky and overwhelming process.
However, with careful planning, luxurious furniture
and furnishings can be integrated into any backyard
to freshen up tired looks and create an outdoor oasis.
Considering your furniture will spend the bulk of
its life basking under the sun, its important to opt
for UV-stabilised products such as wicker coupled
with high-performance outdoor fabrics. While basic
polyester looks fantastic initially, it is only a matter of
time before it begins to fade. Jason Sands of Royalle
Outdoor Furniture in Melbourne recommends
heavy-duty fabrics such as Sunbrella by Du Pont,
which is highly resistant to deterioration from ultra-
violet sunrays. Made from 100 per cent dyed acrylic
bre, Sunbrella boasts a bagful of benets and is
resistant to fading, scratching and scuf ng.
Additionally, for those living by the sea, furniture
constructed from welded-aluminium frames is great
as they prevent rust from forming and reduce the
chance of unsightly rust marks staining your outdoor
paving. Jason particularly recommends Royalles
range of modular lounge suites, which are assembled
using synthetic wicker that is expertly weaved over

an aluminium frame. Aluminiums lightweight nature
also makes it the ideal option for customising seating
arrangements to suit all spaces and occasions.
If youre hoping to create a more contemporary
vibe, look no further than the Lobo bench designed
by Gareth Dotchin of Empire Creative Group.
The epitome of sleek sophistication, this modern
multipurpose bench is the perfect entertainer, with
its recessed pot holder cleverly transforming into an
ice bucket in a matter of minutes.
Teak has also been an increasingly popular choice
in high-end outdoor furniture over the past 12
months. Adam Batty, co-founder of Bali Republic,
says, Reclaimed teak is very much in vogue at
the moment, with its rustic look complementing
modern outdoor areas. He also highlights that teak
consistently performs well in Australias varied climate
and the lack of maintenance required makes it an
extremely desirable option for busy households.
According to Jason, Making a statement with your
outdoor furniture is all about choosing a contrasting

colour. For instance, a dark bronze wicker against a
sandstone paver can work wonders to create interest
in a bland backyard.
A common misconception is that cushions and
rugs should be kept strictly indoors. This couldnt be
further from the truth as a rened outdoor rug can
efectively create a focal point and add a sense of class
to any area. Cris Bucknall from Eco Chic emphasises
that sophisticated diamond prints and stylish stripes
are currently on trend. Created in Belgium from 100
per cent polypropylene, Eco Chics range of Ikat and
Diamond outdoor rugs are just as efective as their
interior counterparts. While mould doesnt cultivate on
polypropylene, its imperative that your rug is regularly
hosed down and allowed to fully dry in the sun as dirt
can cling to the bres and stain the surface.

A
s Australians, we are aforded the luxury of enjoying
much of the year outdoors so alfresco areas are a large
part of our everyday lifestyles. As an extension of our
interiors, an alfresco area should be given just as much
attention and with a growing range of stunning soft
furnishings made to withstand the diverse Australian climate, it is
possible to extend your interior style into the garden.
The beauty is in the detail and with outdoor fabrics now more
stylish than ever, its easy to add colour, texture and warmth to your
outdoor space.
Decisions, decisions
To determine the right material for your outdoor area, you will need
to consider exactly where the product will be situated. How much
sunlight will the material be exposed to? Will the area be subject
to a lot of moisture, such as around pool areas or an uncovered
courtyard? If so, a heavy-duty acrylic fabric will be better due to its
sun-resistant qualities. However, if your area is semi-covered and
there is little exposure to direct sunlight or high levels of moisture,
then some polyester textiles will be suf cient.
Fab features
Megan Riddle from Bungalow Living helps ease the confusion by
breaking the materials down into two groups to help with your
selection process:
Full exposure: For areas that have limited cover garden benches,
pool areas etc a solution-dyed acrylic is best. This is because its
suitable for use in full sun; it is water-resistant so doesnt fade easily
and is a heavy-duty outdoor fabric that doesnt compromise on
softness. The secret is in the fabric being dyed prior to being woven;
however, this does mean there will be less intricate patterns and
colours.
This material is best suited for large cushions, such as on chairs and
general upholstery, as it is easy to clean with just a damp cloth and a
quick shake or light vacuum.
This fabric is usually guaranteed for up to ve years.
Partial exposure: In well-covered areas, choose a fabric that is 100
per cent polyester. It is still water-, stain- and mould-resistant but
will fade if exposed to more than 500 hours of UV light. There are

Tips and tricks
Dry-clean your outdoor fabrics to enhance
their longevity
Never use an iron or clothes dryer as they
can potentially damage the materials
multiple patterns and colour options available, making this material
perfect for the occasional piece. Polyester is great for cushions and
accents as they can be easily removed for cleaning, which is best
left to the experts as dry-cleaning is recommended for this material.
Modern styling
Anna Day from Elements Australia recommends mixing stripes,
solids and patterns; use a couple of solid base fabrics then mix
up with occasional cushions to create abold and dynamic look.
Add to this by also incorporating occasional cushions in varying
sizes and shapes.
Another combination to consider is oral prints. These patterns
make great accent pieces when paired with neutral colours.
Otherwise, if you prefer clean lines and a subtler palette, try a
geometric pattern or nautical colour scheme.
Its best to keep in mind your surroundings and work with the
area you have. Never clutter a space. Simply add either two brightly
coloured accent cushions or a bold-patterned outdoor rug to your
space and watch the transformation.

O
ver the years, outdoor bathrooms have
come a long way in terms of style and
versatility. With a range of beautiful
and functional products on the market,
its no wonder outdoor bathrooms and
showers are increasingly becoming a popular addition
to many backyards.
This rise in popularity of outdoor showers and
bathrooms could easily be attributed to their versatility.
While they are perfect for rinsing of after a swim,
they also provide the ideal place to wash pets and
clear of excess dirt before entering the home.
Outdoor showers and baths can easily be used as
a focal point when creating a refreshing bathing
environment. This can be achieved by situating the
area against a decorative backdrop or surrounding
it with beautiful owers and shrubbery. For those
who wish to utilise this space for proper bathing,
screens ofer privacy without closing of the natural

Handy hints
Make a style statement with materials. For example, try timber
screening and pebbles underfoot.
Consider the overall look and feel of your home when
choosing the design of your outdoor shower or bathroom.
If you want low maintenance and durability for your outdoor
shower xtures, choose marine-grade stainless steel.
Keep plumbing costs down by opting for cold water only in
your outdoor shower.
Consider your privacy. Cleverly positioned plants, positioning
the outdoor shower to the side of an outdoor room or behind
a wall or privacy screen may mean you enjoy your outdoor
showering much more!

OUTDOOR BATHROOMS & SHOWERS
Whether youre after a complete bathing area or
a stand-alone shower, its extremely important to
select high-quality products that can bear the brunt of
Australias varied climate. A few years back, Australia
was ooded with cheap timber showers from overseas,
which were then promoted as outdoor products,
says Stephen Gowlett of Queensland-based company
Rainware. He notes that the outdoor bathroom market
is also lled with second-grade products made from
stainless steel (304). This is problematic as this steel
is prone to rusting, which signicantly reduces the
lifespan of the product. Stephen is more in favour of
premium rust-resistant stainless steel (316) to ensure
your outdoor shower gives you a lifetime of pleasure.
When designing your outdoor bathroom, it is also
important to consider the overall size and layout of your
backyard and whether you would like to opt for a more
permanent or portable area. The Under the Tree garden
shower by Siekaup Germany encompasses ingenious
functionality with elegant style, making it the perfect
portable shower option. Easily divided into two parts,
this products water supply is regulated by a water tap
and can be easily moved. Similarly, adjustable showers
from Aquapole make outdoor showering both easy and
aesthetically pleasing for those with space constraints.

project that requires careful planning. With each state
having diferent requirements for outdoor enclosures,
talking to your local council should be your rst step.
You may need to have plans drawn up and submitted
to council for approval.
Likewise, many authorities require a ame-failure
device to be connected to gas barbecues, which
is a standard feature of the Heatlie Island Gourmet
and can be tted to all Heatlie barbecues at the
time of manufacture. However, this feature cant be
tted afterwards so be sure of what you need before
making your purchase.
Budget rst
Of course, budget is a big consideration in any home
renovation project. Its a good idea to do plenty of
research before your start and also try to maintain
a realistic approach. As well as building materials,
youll need to factor in appliances and a barbecue,
benchtops, shading and protection, even oor
coverings and furniture.
Position is key
When it comes to the design of your outdoor kitchen,
position should be the number-one consideration.
Choosing the right location will ensure you can use
your outdoor kitchen all year round. Think about the
areas proximity to the other parts of the house, how
to optimise views and privacy factors.
OUTDOOR KITCHENS
OUTDOOR PRODUCT GUIDE | 99
Outdoor kitchens that lead seamlessly from a homes internal
living areas or kitchen are ideal, but free-standing, gazebo-style
outdoor kitchens can also work really well. Its worth considering
how you will use your outdoor kitchen incorporating a dining area
is a great idea and perhaps even a relaxed alfresco living space.
Weatherproof
Protection from the elements is another important factor. A roof
or sail will protect your outdoor kitchen from the rain and sun and
encourage you to use the area throughout the year. Your appliances,
barbecue and cupboards will need to be protected from the weather
even stainless-steel barbecues and appliances will rust if exposed
to the elements.
Choose your type
The next big decision is whether you opt for a built-in or modular
system. There are many module-based systems on the market that are
cost ef cient and look fabulous. However, if youre aiming for a more
customised and upmarket space, it can pay to engage a builder who
will design and construct an appropriate outdoor kitchen for your home.
Also consider whether your outdoor kitchen will be a fully contained
external one complete with fridge, sink and benchtops or simply
an adjunct to your existing kitchen.
When it comes to benchtops, granite and stone are popular options
for outdoor kitchens, mainly because most barbecues need to be
installed into a non-combustible bench.
The Heatlie barbecue is an exception as the design deects
heat away from the bench. This means it can be installed directly
into materials like MDF and wood, which gives the home owner
numerous design options.
Construction, the material the barbecue is made from and the
availability of a warranty and after-sales service are other important
considerations when it comes to choosing a barbecue for your
outdoor kitchen.
Quality advice
My best tip is to buy for the long term. Opt for a unit that
comes with a 10-year warranty, thats made in Australia and that

ofers the ability to buy customised products and spare parts

in the long run.
Also, consider whether you really need a hood or if this is simply
aesthetic, and beware of gimmicky trends such as infrared burners,
lava rocks and ceramic Brickettes. In my experience they often dont
live up to the hype.
Its also important to plan ahead; minimise additional regulatory
costs by choosing the gas service most suited to your purpose, either
bottled or natural (piped) gas.
Most barbecues have an option of LPG or natural gas, however it
pays to make this decision when you design your outdoor kitchen
so the natural gas connection can be installed during the building
process. Some barbecues, such as the Heatlie units, allow for a
retro-tted natural gas system, but its best to make this decision
before you purchase. And remember, a licensed gas tter needs to
make the conversion and installation.

of producing a quality landscape design that people want

Water features range in size to include everything from small burbling
urns to massive retention basins that can clean and recycle water for
drinking and swimming. Water in the landscape has a multitude of
benets. These include:

WATER FEATURES & PONDS
1
Sound
The noise produced from a water feature whether
it is a trickle or a torrent can change the dimension
of a garden and set the mood and tone of the space.
For calmer efects, go for less sound. Conversely, for
something dramatic, ramp it up.
Movement
The action of water travelling through the garden goes
hand in hand with the sound it creates. Water that is
pumped at a fast rate and drops of a taller height will
produce a greater sound and increased level of impact
on the design. At the other end of the scale, at, reective
ponds create a sense of contemplation.
Reection
There is a real trend in landscape design to dye ponds
black to increase their reectivity. Although this adds
drama and increases the reective qualities of the water,
it is not really that necessary for the home gardener as
water itself will mirror and reect its surroundings. Try
to locate your water feature in an area that will provide
an interesting reection.
Cooling
Larger bodies of water will actually lower the air
temperature around them and create a diferent
microclimate in the space, a real benet to the
Australian garden.

Water holding
Retaining water on-site through a pond or water feature
can help lower water run-of as well as increase storage
for use as irrigation in times of need.
Aesthetics
The best part about water features is that they just look
great! They can set a tone, be a stand-alone feature or
can direct visitors through the space.
The basics of a water feature are:
A pond for holding water. In smaller water features,
this may be a sump and in larger ones, it may be
a huge pool. Whatever the size, it needs to hold
water, which can be achieved with a ridged or
exible liner.
A pump to move the water about. This may be a
lter to create sound and movement by sending
the water over a drop. A pump will also add oxygen
and prevent the surface from stagnating and
breeding mosquitos.
A lter will clean the water and remove particles.
This doesnt have to be mechanical and can be
plant- and animal-based but for the novice, a
man-made lter is advisable.
Pond design and construction is a detailed and
diverse subject, so its always advisable to seek the
assistance of a professional when it comes to installing
a water feature in your own home.

Y
ouve created a fully functional outdoor
room but you cant escape the feeling that
it needs a little air. From decorative metal
screening and water features to sculptures
and back-lit planters, these days there are
plenty of sculptural items that will add that nishing
touch. Personalise your outdoor room with the latest
in outdoor decoration.
Think outside the square
Some of the most common ways to bring an
architectural element to an outdoor area are through
water features, lighting, bird baths and statues,
however these days, there are plenty of contemporary
solutions available. Rudi Jass from Jass Design says
Australians are becoming more and more adventurous
when it comes to decorating their outdoors.
When I started making my rst water feature in
1991, there was nothing else on the market except
some overly ornamental concrete features like little
cherubs or French urns, says Rudi. I think around the
early 90s, people started to look at their garden as
more than just a place for the Hills Hoist and wanted
to utilise the space as an outdoor extension of their
homes. Rudi has witnessed the growing trend of
incorporating contemporary sculpture into these areas.
Multipurpose pieces
Its not just about aesthetics when choosing the
perfect piece; there are several reasons to bring
sculpture into your outdoor space. You might be
seeking a feature item to draw attention to a particular
area of the garden or perhaps to draw attention away
from something. In this case, a sculptural screen can
be used to conceal areas of your backyard that youd
rather not look at. These multipurpose screens can be
used to block out neighbours, hide utility areas and
add height to fences or boundaries. They can even be
used as pergola roong or can be backlit for a dazzling
night-time feature.

Director of Entanglements Metal Art Studio, Helen
Neyland, suggests using architectural screens to dene
or divide existing areas in a decorative manner. Want
to create a feature for an enclosed space or bring a
distant wall into focus? Entanglements range of wall
art is laser-cut from oxidised metal and available in
a range of interesting patterns, from contemporary
abstracts to stylised ora and fauna.
Materials matter
The right materials can enhance the natural aspects
of your outdoor space and stand the test of time.
Entanglements uses laser-cut, oxidised metal in its
screens and metal art, which, Helen says, possesses a
rare beauty that complements natural elements. For
ultimate durability, she suggests choosing an item that
is powder-coated.
Jass Designs sculptures predominantly feature
stainless and corten steel, though Rudi also
incorporates natural stone and glass into his designs.
I am passionate about creating sculptures that
have an extremely long lifespan and need very little
maintenance, he says. While corten steel is one of the
most durable materials for outdoor sculpture, it can
stain. I wouldnt recommend placing a sculpture made
from corten steel on sandstone pavers it would be
great sitting among garden beds though, says Rudi.

NATURAL
ATTRACTION
An attractive and relatively new garden concept, the green
wall has become a popular feature for the modern garden
Words: Charlie Albone
OUTDOOR PRODUCT GUIDE | 115
GREEN WALLS
1
I
ncreasingly popping up in backyards and outdoor
rooms, the green wall is a visually appealing
feature for the home.
While green walls have seemingly ourished
since about 2007, the original green wall system
was patented in 1938 by its inventor, Stanley Hart White, a
professor of landscape architecture. A French native named
Patrick Blanc is often credited with developing the concept
in the late 1980s, for it was he who really brought the green
wall to the mass market.
Here, we discuss the pros and cons of this attractive and,
at rst glance, unconventional way of growing your plants.
Its many benets to the modern gardener include:
Space saving
Green walls use minimal ground space compared to the
amount of garden bed space they provide. For example,
a green wall on a surface 2m wide and 2m high can give
you 4m of garden bed while only taking up the footprint
of approximately 1m.
Insulation
The small cavity between the green wall and the actual wall
surface remains at a relatively constant temperature. This
has a knock-on efect when it comes to cooling or heating
your green wall-clad building as it adds a thermal barrier.
Aesthetic appeal
Green walls add a natural beauty and a real wow factor
to any room, courtyard or building.
Acoustic benets
Green walls ofer good phonic qualities that absorb sound
waves, so they are perfect to use as a screen between
properties. If your neighbour uses the other side as
a green wall too, this efect is magnied.
Air quality
All plants act as a bio lter to capture and denature
pollutants known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs),
and the average green wall has around 50 plants per square
metre so the larger your planting space, the better the
air quality.
Biophilia
There is no need for you to actually talk to your plants,
but simple interaction with plants has been shown to
create a sense of wellbeing.
Green space
Increasing green space in the urban environment helps to
reduce the urban heat island efect, which occurs when
buildings and hard surfaces absorb the suns heat and then
send it back into their surroundings.
Although the advantages of a green wall are appealing,
as with most things, it does also have its disadvantages.
These include:
116 | OUTDOOR PRODUCT GUIDE
ABOVE This new Greenwall Australia product
enables smaller plants to be used (making it
cheaper). It also looks great from the start.
Cost
Green walls cost between $900 and $1500 per square
metre, so they can be quite a luxury item. However, with
all the interest in green walls, there are many new DIY
systems, which lower the labour bill.
Maintenance
Green walls are extremely labour-intensive items to
maintain as usually you have an average of 50 pots/
plants per square metre. A good way to reduce your
maintenance time bill is to clump plants or use drift
planting to minimise individual plant care, while also
maximising visual impact.
The construction methods of modern green wall
systems have improved in leaps and bounds compared
to those of early green walls. Nowadays, and with great
success, individual potted plants can be hung on a wall
with built-in irrigation and drainage to each pot.
Although root space is tight, this system mimics, to
a greater efect, a natural growing habit. However, the
major benet today comes when its time to replace
plants. Its much easier to lift a pot out of the wall
and replant a new one, compared to cutting felt and
attempting to reseed another plant.
Another benet of newer systems includes being able
to reduce the plants required, which also minimises the
cost to the green wall owner.

appear larger. This is because of the reduced number of join lines,
which ensures an uncluttered look. Replacing sections of lawn with
easy-care paving can also help reduce your water use and the amount
of time you need to spend on garden maintenance.
Whether youre planning a contemporary or classic outdoor project,
there are several colours and nishes to choose from so you can be
assured of nding something of a complementary tone and texture.
For paving and coping, various custom and honed nishes (where the
aggregate shows through) are available. While the exposed-aggregate
nishes are particularly popular at the moment, the smoother nishes
are still in demand. The project pictured above features White Sands
distinctive coloured pavers and coping.
To ensure a fully coordinated look throughout your outdoor areas,
from the paving to the steps and garden walls, most Customstone SA
products are available in a complete range of colours and nishes. You
can also rest assured that the stock you receive is new and in pristine
condition as all products are made to order.
