THE LONTAR FOUNDATION

Since its establishment in 1987, the Lontar Foundation of Jakarta has taken upon its shoulders the responsibility
to improve international awareness of Indonesian literature and culture. Lontar Publications Division, the
backbone of the organization, has the signifcant task of determining which literary works are to be translated
so as to refect Indonesias cultural wealth.
The Lontar Foundation publishes books under three imprints: Lontar, Godown, and Amanah. Most publications
released under the Lontar imprint are translations of Indonesian literature intended for general reading
pleasure and for use in teaching courses on Indonesian literature and culture. Prior to 2002 (when Godown
and Amanah were established) all other Foundation publications carried the Lontar imprint as well. At present,
the Foundation publishes books in Indonesian and other languages of the Indonesian archipelago under the
Amanah imprint; while books originally written in English (or other foreign languages) are published under the
Godown imprint.

Lontar
Titles released under the Lontar imprint are primarily translations of Indonesian
literature. Exceptions include large-format books that embody Lontars mission of
enhancing international knowledge of Indonesian culture.
Amanah
Under its Amanah imprint, Lontar publishes Indonesian-language titles that Lontar
itself has put together in the course of developing an English-language publication.
Godown
Under its Godown imprint, Lontar produces books that were written originally in
English about Indonesia. These might be novels, collections of poetry, cubooks on
Indonesian culture, or any one of a range of subjects.
A fourth imprint, titled BTW Books, is almost ready to be launched. BTW stands for by the way (as in by
the way, have you heard about such and such an author?) and the titles in this series will feature work by new
and emerging Indonesian writers. This series of mini-books, with each one around 100 pages in length, will be
aimed at publishers, editors, critics, and other persons of infuence in the publishing industry.

leftists Indonesians were unable to return home. In Indonesia, numerous

Indonesias modern national art theater. It begins with nationalist allegories,

which began to be explored towards the end of the period covered by this

As the New Order government became increasingly authoritarian,
censoring and crushing public opposition openly and often brutally, there
was a clear shift in playwriting style from allegorical fairytales of wordplay,
humor and oblique reference to a more direct engagement, interrogation,
and call to arms. All in all, Indonesian drama during the New Order
provides a fascinating window into a society in transition caught between
the legacy of tradition, the challenge of repression, and a strong desire for
democratization.

Since the end of the New Order in 1998, the demand to revise and evaluate
Indonesian modern history became more intense. To most historians,
the valuation of New Order could not be done before fathoming the

WAYANG EDUCATIONAL PACKAGE
For centuries, the people of Indonesia have revered the art of wayang kulit, the shadow puppet theater. The signifcance of this
art form was recognized by UNESCO when it declared wayang a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity.
There are three major performance styles of wayang kulit: classic, contemporary-interpretive, and condensed. Lontar has
documented each of these performance styles twice and produced six flms with subtitles in Indonesian and English. Lontar has
also published six complete performance transcripts in three languagesJavanese, Indonesian and Englishand a volume of

Indonesia possesses an exceptionally signifcant intellectual
heritage woven into diverse oral traditions. History and
experience have long been fashioned into recorded texts and oral
performance, giving shape to local wisdom and passing knowledge
from one generation to the next. Carrying forward the knowledge
embodied in such texts, and enabling their reinterpretation and
comparison to inform contemporary experience, is a challenge to
the evolving culture of Indonesia today. Unfortunately, the country
has thus far devoted insuffcient resources to the preservation
and documentation of these records of local knowledge. Hope
rests now in new sound and video recording technologies,
which can enable at least partial preservation of these complex
and deeply-rooted oral forms. While Lontar has neither the
vast fnancial resources nor the staff numbers to record all of
Indonesias oral traditions, the Foundation has thus far recorded
30 oral-performance traditionsvisual documentation that can
be enjoyed for generations to come.
DOCUMENTARY FILMS AND PERFORMANCE RECORDINGS
Indonesian writers have been instrumental in the creation of
national identity, the encouragement of debate about the direction
of Indonesias future and the interpretation of Indonesias past.
The history of modern Indonesian literature, especially that of the
20th century, is marked by incredible variety and vitality. From the
colonial past to the present, Indonesian writers have also shown
incredible versatility and maintained a consistent ability to cross
genres.
Numerous obstacles stand in the way of promoting knowledge
about Indonesian literature and its creators but Lontars On the
Record series of documentary flms on Indonesian writers, offer
a possible, if partial, answer to this problem. Lontar has thus far
produced 24 flms on Indonesian writers. These flms, each of them
focusing on specifc individual writer, offer the audience a direct
view at the people behind the books. We are able to hear, directly
from the writers mouths, their reminiscences and their thoughts.
