Subscribers experience next-generation applica-
tions on smartphones, for carriers to introduce
new services quickly and operate them protably,
these services must be tested and monitored us-
ing an actual smartphone. How else can the cus-
tomer experience be accurately represented?
Ascom developed the Extended Measurement Unit a hardware-enclosed
smartphone congured for automated, 24x7 operation to enable opera-
tors to efciently and scalably monitor smartphone-based services from
the end users perspective. The unit can be used by TEMS Monitor Master,
and can either be tethered or can be run standalone using software running
directly on the smartphone. Other products in the portfolio including TEMS
Pocket Remote are also taking advantage of the unit for their testing needs
including for in car and in building deployments.
FEATURES:
Automated Handset Reset: The built-in watchdog resets handsets to
enable reliable, 24x7 operation to ensure services can be available to
maximize revenue.
Swappable: The entire EMU can easily be swapped in the eld to
minimize service testing interruption and maximize testing on the
latest devices.
External antenna: The units external handset antenna enables operation
in locations with poor signal-to-noise ratio characteristics. FCC certication
and CE marking is done as part of the hardware development.
Versatile Form Factor: Measuring just 27cm by 11cm by 3.5cm, the
unit is large enough to accommodate most modern Smartphones whilst
also allowing efcient mounting in rack enclosures or as an unobtrusive
standalone unit in buildings or vehicles.
Latest Devices: Supports Motorola Android, Samsung Galaxy SIII (US
and European LTE bands). Additional US band LTE handsets and LTE USB
dongle variant, and a Wi-Fi-enabled solution are planned as well as a
GPS solution. All plans are exible because the introduction of smart
phones is driven by the market and the best handset 6 months from
now is not yet known. The EMU helps solve the innovators dilemma by
allowing the latest handsets to be introduced quickly.
Smart1.

been created to allow RTU-5 and up to 2 EMUs to
be deployed.
Smart2.
A new hardware enclosure for desktop or rack has
been created to allow up to 3 EMUs to be
deployed by themselves.

Ascoms world-leading, on-device expertise is an integral part of the extended
measurement unit, and provides capabilities such as detailed radio and IP trace
as well as on-device service and application testing software. This provides
engineers with a representative testing environment coupled with deep drill
down to resolve issues quickly. IP trace can also be used to help determine
how a service is interacting with the network and back-end application server
because there is often no other way of determining whether a third party
application is functioning correctly.
The EMU platform can also be upgraded with new software capabilities
as they become available.
