Hello Fall 2014 Data Team,

This is Kim and Ken. We will be your Data team leaders. Over the course of few weeks
you will be given two assignments. Please read over this email carefully as it will provide
a how-to guide to your assignments.

A little about the nature of the data:

Over the course of the past 3 years we have collected fruit fly viability (development)
data. Specifically we recorded the number of flies that emerged from their pupea-cases
every 4 hours for a week at a time.

The data we collected was originally written down on paper and then entered on Excel
spreadsheets. To make sure the data copied from the paper data sheets to excel sheets
where entered correctly, the paper data sheets were scanned and the images of the paper
data sheets were saved. Your assignment will be to double check data entry by comparing
the scanned paper sheets to the excel spreadsheet.

Here is a step-by-step guide:

*Step 1:
Open your assigned spreadsheet (attached) and find out which population you were
assigned.

For Example: you are given A12 V - Block 1, that means:
Treatment: A
Population: 12
Block: 1

*Step 2:
Click on the Dropbox link-(where the scanned images of the paper sheets are kept)
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/811py65avd0rq2b/AABIAKoArNDNb6osYroEgW-
Ba?dl=0
> Open Assigned Folder: 1. A Viability
> Open Subfolder: A - Block 1. Viability
> Open Population Folder: A12 - Block 1. Viability

Here, we have population folders that correspond with data on your spreadsheet.
For Example: Folder 1. A1A1 - Block 1. Viability correspond with row A1A1 in your
spreadsheet.

Important note: Each scanned image represents one day of data collection.
Even though the excel spreadsheet shows a range of dates
(Ex: 1/31/12 - 2/7/12 across A1A1 row), Dropbox might not have a sheet
with the corresponding date. You might not have a scanned image for
1/31/12, even though it appears in the excel spreadsheet. If that happens,
please continue on with 2/1/12, you dont have to worry about 1/31/12.

*Step 3: If you discover an incorrect value within the excel spreadsheet,
please correct it, change the text color to red, and highlight the cell in
yellow. This will allow us to identify any mistake you capture.

Important note: To ensure everyone is concentrating on finding errors, we have
deliberately inputted at least one error for every date recorded. In the event that you miss
even one error, we will ask you to look over everything again until you find that last
mistake. Please keep in mind that you have two spreadsheets to double check to earn your
grade. You are done with lab work for the quarter once the second assignment is offically
complete.

*Step 5: After correcting all mistakes, please send the spreadsheets back
to us by replying to this Instructional email.

Important Dates: You have one week to finish each assignment. The first assignment is
due Sunday October 12 at Noon. The second spreadsheet will be sent to you on the same
day, October 12 at 1pm. You will be contacted no later than Wednesday October 15 if
your first assignment is incomplete. If incomplete, you will be expected to turn your
attention back to the first assignment until you find all of the mistakes. The second
assignment is due on the October 19
th
at Noon. You will be contacted no later than
October 22 if your second assignment is incomplete.

The simplest advice we can offer is be careful and thorough when double-checking your
work. If you have any questions or confused about something contact us soon as
possible, but please give us up to 24 hours to answer your email. Remember to tell us the
date, population and block that you are having issues with and be specific with your
question.

For week 1 only
In the event that you still have questions you are welcome to stop by the NERE office,
room 1213 in Natural Sciences 1.
