Some students in the Lenape
Regional High School District
may be happy they wont have to
take midterms and finals this
school year, but some parents are
not too happy with the decision.
A group of parents from
Lenape High School attended last
weeks board of education meet-
ing to express their concern for
the lack of midterms and finals at
the schools this year.
Speaking on behalf of the
group, Christine Dickson said she
believed the lack of exams would
negatively impact students when
they head off to college.
It helps them develop a skill
set for college, Dickson said.
Another parent, Leigh Ann Er-
langer, said not holding exams
was going to set students back in
their college preparation.
I think wed be doing our stu-
dents a disservice otherwise, she
said.
The district has undergone a
large revision of its curriculum
in recent years. As part of the
changes, the district has looked at
changing the way it approaches
assessments. Dickson said she
and other parents received an
email in May detailing the
change.
Dickson felt the changes could
have been better communicated
with parents. She received the
email on May 23 on the Friday
prior to Memorial Day.
Communicating this subject
in this manner is not optimal,
Dickson said.
Superintendent Carol Birn-
bohm said the district is in a plan-
ning year and plans to unveil new
assessments for next year.
The new assessments will align
with changes made in the dis-
tricts curriculum over the past
five to six years. Birnbohm said
the old assessments were still
being used up until last year and
didnt align with what the stu-
dents were learning. She said the
new assessments will be better
aligned to the new curriculum.
The focus of the curriculum re-
volves around problem solving,
critical thinking and applying the
learning material to real life ap-
plications.
Kids are going to have to pre-
pare for this and have to be re-

Mayor: We are dedicated
to delivering best to community
It has certainly been an interesting few
months for Medford Township. We have
seen some important changes in leader-
ship, including the departures of our town-
ship manager and Councilman James
Randy Pace. A number of residents have
expressed concern that these rapid
changes could disrupt the progress we
have made over the past few years.
While there will be some new faces in
our townships leadership, our vision will
not waver. In our search for a new town-
ship manager, we will be looking for an in-
dividual whose style of leadership empha-
sizes a highly efficient and accountable or-
ganization. We expect Medford Township
employees to be inspired to work hard to-
ward accomplishing the very important
goal of keeping Medford Township main-
tained, with a constant eye on delivering
value for every tax dollar. With the right or-
ganizational plan, we can continue to im-
prove our operations. Im grateful for the
people who are keeping things moving
while these changes take place.
As to the governing body, the person who
replaces Pace will have big shoes to fill.
Randys hard work has been evident to all,
but he wasnt working alone. I have heard
from many people in the political world
that Medford has a unique governing body.
There is not a single person on our council
who dominates the body, nor is there a
member who slacks in contribution. We
each work hard to understand the issues
we face, we each bring thoughts to the table
and we often work through conflicting
views to find a solution that works toward
the greater good for our town. Im proud of
what our council and our town have estab-
lished together and Im quite certain that
Randys replacement will quickly under-
stand what is expected from all of us. To
that end, a new perspective may bring even
more positive change to our township.
I ask for your patience and your input, as
we rebuild core components of our leader-
ship team. I also ask that you pay very close
attention to the new faces, get to know
them and hold them accountable to main-
tain the same standards we have come to
expect from our local officials. In the mean
time, please know we are dedicated to de-
livering the very best from ourselves and
from each other.

ELECTION LETTERS
Letters to the editor regarding
the Nov. 4 election will not be printed
in the Oct. 29 edition. The Oct. 22 edition
will be the last edition before elections
to print these letters.
G
hosts, goblins, ghouls and a lot
of superheroes, princesses,
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
and characters from Frozen will be
parading up and down streets in town
in one short week. Halloween is an ex-
citing time for kids, parents and neigh-
bors alike.
Its a time for fun, a time for laugh-
ter, a time for adorable pictures, a time
for candy, a time for celebration and a
time when we all need to pay attention
to safety.
First and foremost, motorists need
to be extra cautious when driving
through the streets that day, not just in
your own neighborhood, but sur-
rounding ones, as well. Make sure to
be aware of trick-or-treating hours,
and be especially careful when dark-
ness settles in. Be especially alert in
residential neighborhoods, as kids
tend to run excitedly from house to
house.
Parents should be on high alert that
day as well, reminding their kids to
look both ways before crossing the
street and cross only at intersections
and crosswalks, when possible.
If kids are trick-or-treating without
adult supervision, make sure they
know the route so they dont get lost
and confused. Other safety tips, cour-
tesy of the website, www.safekids.org:
Decorate costumes and bags with
reflective tape or stickers and, if possi-
ble, choose light colors.
Choose face paint and makeup
whenever possible instead of masks,
which can obstruct a childs vision.
Have kids carry glow sticks or
flashlights to help them see and be
seen by drivers.
When selecting a costume, make
sure it is the right size to prevent trips
and falls.
If you need more tips or tricks of
the trade for trick-or-treating, visit
www.safekids.org. The local police de-
partment will have safety recommen-
dations, and the municipality will also
have more information about specific
rules and regulations for the day.
Be safe this Halloween. And most
importantly, have a scary good time!

The following information was
provided by the Medford Town-
ship Police Department.
On Oct. 12, at 11:33 p.m., Med-
ford Police were dispatched to a
residence on Jackson
Road regarding a sub-
ject who was acting
disorderly and de-
stroying items in the
house.
Upon police arrival, a 35-year-
old Medford man was found to be
acting violently in the basement
of the home. Police were able to
evacuate several other family
members from the house.
The suspect then retreated into
a basement room where he barri-
caded himself and refused to exit.
As officers attempted to talk to
him, he aggressively exited the
room and began throwing objects
at the officers. In addition to
throwing the items, the man at-
tempted to strike the officers with
a ceramic statue. The subject
then ran into the second floor
area of the home and refused to
exit. The New Jersey State Police
Teams Unit was called to the
scene to assist.
After several hours
attempting to contact
the defendant, the
Teams unit made
entry into the home
and located the subject sleeping
in a bedroom.
He was subsequently taken
into custody without incident at
approximately 6:30 a.m. The de-
fendant was charged with aggra-
vated assault on police, resisting
arrest, and criminal mischief.
Jackson Road was closed during
the six-hour stand-off.
Residents on Carol Joy Road
were notified by police to remain
in their homes during the inci-
dent.

about the kids, Rotarian David
Stow said. We do not charge for
any of our groups, organizations
or businesses that participate.
The 2014 Medford-Vincentown
Halloween Parade will take place
on Saturday, Oct. 25 beginning at
7 p.m. The parade stretches along
Main Street from Firehouse Lane
to Haines School.
The parade dates back to 1946,
a time when United States mili-
tary troops were returning from
service in World War II and pa-
rades were very popular across
the area.
Medford Township officials
wanted to come up with an event
to engage the towns youth during
Halloween. The Medford-Vincen-
town Rotary Club suggested start-
ing a parade.
It was created by the Rotary
Club in order to give the kids and
the guys coming back during the
war something during Mischief
Night, Stow said.
The parade succeeded in at-
tracting children in costume to
Medford Village and became a
mainstay in the township.
Stow has been working on the
parade since 1981. Since then,
there have been a number of
changes to the parade. To start,
the club now has to fund the pa-
rade entirely after the township
stopped providing funds a few
years ago. This resulted in the
club going to businesses and ask-
ing residents for donations.
We fund the parade basically
by donations, Stow said. A lot of
those donations come from the
Medford-Vincentown Rotary Club
businesses themselves.
Prior to the parade, the club
also has coin drops at major inter-
sections. During the parade, club
members can also be found with
donation buckets walking
through the crowd.
Because we realized theres so
many people from outside the
community that attend, Rotari-
ans go through the crowds to ask
for donations during the parade,
Stow said.
The amount of resources it
takes to throw the parade today is
enormous because of its popular-
ity. For awhile, the parade used to
end at the judges stand near Har-
rietts Oil just past the Rancocas
Creek Bridge. Today, the parade
extends further up the road to
Haines School to allow more
room for spectators.
Stow said the number of peo-
ple who come out for the parade
has exploded in the last couple of
decades. The club estimates the
parade brings more than 30,000
people to the event.
I can remember back in the
80s, the parade was always nice,
Stow said. But today the crowds,
especially if we have good weath-
er, are enormous. I tell people
who put floats in the parade every

sponsible for what they learn,
Birnbohm said.
Another problem the district
had in the past was inconsistency
between teachers and schools.
The goal with the curriculum
changes is to establish long-term
learning goals so students across
all four high schools are learning
the same material in their respec-
tive classes.
The lack of midterms and fi-
nals this year coincides with the
start of PARCC testing this year.
Dickson felt the change was done
to accommodate PARCC. She said
the standardized test shouldnt be
a substitute for midterms and fi-
nals.
To compare PARCC to
midterms and finals is like com-
paring apples to oranges, Dick-
son said.
Birnbohm said midterms and
finals were not taken off the cal-
endar because of PARCC.
PARCC wasnt the impetus for
the elimination of midterms and
finals, Birnbohm said.
Birnbohm said the district will
communicate further changes as
more details are determined later
this year. She also invited parents
to call the district administration
building with any questions
about the changes.
year, whatever you think you
need for candy, triple that, and
youll probably still run out one-
third to one-half of the way along
the route.
Because of the massive crowd,
the parade requires dozens of vol-
unteers. Some of the preparation
on the day of the event begins as
early as 7 a.m.
Almost every member of the
club is doing something, Stow
said. Whether its putting togeth-
er the judges stand to lining up
the floats so we can have some or-
derly traffic flow. Its a complete
club effort.
Anyone in costume is invited
to participate in the parade. Walk-
ers can register at St. Mary of the
Lakes School on the day of the
event. Those who wish to partici-
pate in the costume contest fol-
lowing the parade can sign up at
the end of the route at Haines
School.

Boil, boil, toil
and trouble
Your neighborhood
butcher for over 15 years!
The Woman's Club of Medford,
in collaboration with the Village
of Taunton Forge Shopping Cen-
ter, is bringing Trunk or Treat-
ing to Medford this Halloween.
The Medford Trunk or Treat
event will be held on Oct. 31 from
3 to 5 p.m. Parents who wish to
participate in candy distribution
should come in a vehicle and be
prepared to distribute candy from
their trunk. Decorations are op-
tional, but prizes will be given for
the best decorated trunk.
Escorted children are invited
to walk through the designated
area of the parking lot to collect
candy. The Womans Club will
also lead a parade around the
shopping center so that the chil-
dren can collect treats from the
stores. Prizes will also be award-
ed to the best-costumed children.
The shopping centers stores
will also have snacks and other
munchies available for partici-
pants.
In suburban communities
across the country, trunk-or-
treat also known as Halloween
tailgating is the latest twist on
the quintessentially American
tradition of door-to-door candy-
collecting, bringing Halloween to
the safety of church, school or
shopping center parking lots,
turning the backs of vehicles into
the new heavily decorated front
porch.
Trunk-or-treating also solves
the suburban and rural drawback
in which homes built a half-mile
apart make the simple act of
going door-to-door unrealistic.
Where subdivision neighbors are
sometimes strangers, these safe
alternative community events
substitute family-friendly enter-
tainment for the uncertainty par-
ents feel when escorting
their children through neighbor-
hoods.
From the research we've done,
this is great for the kids, but the
parents end up having just as
much fun, said Kathy Cullen,
president of the Womans Club.
Last years inaugural event was
well-received by both the trunk-
ers and the treaters, so we ex-
pect an ever bigger turnout this
year.
For more information and to
register for the event, visit the
Woman's Club website at
www.medfordwomansclub.com,
or email medfordwomansclub@
gmail.com.
