GYF POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Greening Youth Foundation (GYF, gyfoundation.org) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to nurture
environmental stewardship among diverse youth and young adults, and expose them to conservation careers.

Opportunity:
GYF seeks an Interpretation, Education & Cultural Resource Management Intern (the intern) at the Martin
Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, Atlanta GA. The 12-week internship will begin on Monday, July 14
(flexible) and run for 12 weeks.

Position Overview and Tasks:
The interns will learn interpretive techniques, public speaking, research methods, exhibit design & fabrication,
museum collection methodology, historic preservation techniques, archival records management associated
with a cultural resource park operation and how to convey and connect the historical significance and
importance of a cultural resource to the public.

Interns will also assist in content, design, and development of web pages; interactive technologies; the
creation of a new Park e-mail newsletter; online exhibitions; and social media/blog posts.
Responsibilities
Interpretation and Education Duties
Intern will:
Engage with the general public and communicate orally in front of varied audiences
Research the history of the Civil Rights Movement, the Sweet Auburn Community and the life of Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Educate youth and public on historical and cultural resources preservation
Conduct informal interpretation and provide historical information
Provide park and area orientation to the visiting public
Make informal visitor contacts at visitor contact areas, parking lots, plaza grounds, and visitor
walkways
Present formal interpretive programs to large (up to 50+) and diverse audiences
Conduct Birth Home tours, Sweet Auburn Neighborhood walks, and Historic Ebenezer talks
Prepare written outlines for Chief of Interpretation prior to conducting programs
Operate Visitor Center and King Center Freedom Hall
Open and close facilities following established procedures
Record and compile visitor statistics
Monitor supplies and restock brochures and other informational material
Count and prepares Birth Home tickets for distribution
Make various public announcements utilizing PA system
Operate audio visual equipment for daily programs and special events
Display exceptional visitor services by going out of his/her way to greet the public, access and meet
visitor needs and expectations
Walk around the facilities to provide visitor information and services.

Cultural Resources Duties
Intern will:
Sort and file historically significant documents, label folders, read and organize Testimony and
Response archives and digitize historic documents and photos
Assist with research requests and independently perform research tasks
Assist with curatorial housekeeping tasks, including integrated pest management (IPM)

Research and prepare already documented oral histories for permanent posting on the website and/or
other social media learning networks through the use of the Park's archives
Participate as an active member of the Interpretation and Cultural Resource Management Division
Team

The Student Intern will be supervised by the Chief of Interpretation, Education, and Cultural Resource
Management. Formal and on-the-job training is conducted the first two weeks of duty. Interns will receive
guidance from Lead Ranger and other permanent Park Rangers and Museum Technician. Work will be
reviewed by the Chief of Interpretation and Lead Ranger who will observe and provide feedback of the Interns
interpretive and cultural resource programs at least three times over the course of the season. The interns
performance will be evaluated mid-season and end-of-season.

Requirements/Qualifications:
This internship is open to college students of diverse backgrounds between 16 and 25 years of age. Applicants
must have completed at least two years of undergraduate coursework and have backgrounds in Education,
Teaching, Public Relations, Tourism, Government, International Studies, Broadcasting, Sociology, Journalism,
English, History, Public History, Archives Records Management, Museum Studies, Archaeology, Anthropology,
or related fields. Intern must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications and complete required IT training.

The successful applicant should be able to pass a federal background check and U.S. citizenship or permanent
U.S. residency is required.

It is essential that applicants have a strong work ethic and communication skills. Intern is expected to
communicate regularly with supervisor and co-workers regarding problems, concerns, events, and operational
changes. Enthusiasm, flexibility, tolerance, and patience are necessary traits in dealing with park visitors.
Intern must be reliable, responsible and able to work independently. Must have great organizational skills and
be able to write reports and create presentations.

Position Compensation
The selected applicant will be compensated at a rate of $14.15/hour and work up to 40 hours per week as
approved by the supervisor.

Other Information
The park will accommodate interns with physical disabilities.

The park is easily accessible to public transportation.

A valid drivers license is required; however a personal vehicle is not required.
