AE 302 Aerodynamics II, Spring 2013 Midterm exam II : 04 / 02 / 2013

NAME :
Assume the fluid is air (with R = 287 J/(kg K) = 1716 ft lb
f
/ (slug R)) and it can be treated as an ideal gas with
constant specific heats and =1.4. If you use the tables in the appendices in the book, state that you are using them.
If your conditions do not correspond to an entry in the table do not interpolate use the value in the table that is
closer to the conditions you have. As an alternative to using the tables you may use the equations in the text. If you
do so, write out the equation you are using. In either case clearly show your work.

SELECT 4 OF THE 5 PROBLEMS AND SOLVE IN FULL
IF YOU WISH TO SOLVE ALL 5 THEN YOU WILL GET EXTRA POINTS

Problem 1 20 points
Consider a control surface of a high speed vehicle which is a symmetric thin airfoil (c/t=2/9~0.22) with
circular nose tangent to a parabolic arc (see Fig. 1)

Fig. 1 Symmetric airfoil geometry c=9

For an angle of attack =5 deg. the maximum Cp is the max Cp obtained from the circular nose.
1.a Calculate the critical Mach number for this symmetric airfoil
1.b Calculate and draw the (C

0< <10

Problem 2 25 points
The same airfoil control surface of problem 1is in supersonic flow at M = 3. Calculate the drag at zero
degrees angle of incidence. Consider c=c

Problem 3 25 points
Consider as an alternative design for the control surface the diamond-like airfoil shape defined in Fig. 2
3.1 Calculate the drag at M=3. For an angle of incidence deg. The angle is not given but it can be
found from measurements of the speed obtained after the lower and upper surface shocks and it is
found in both cases the Mach after the shock is M= 2.645. Use the exact theory (oblique shock
wave/expansion fan) to compute the drag. If you finished problem 2 compare the values.

Fig.2 Definition of the new diamond-like design

Problem 4 30 points
4.1. Calculate the drag at M=10 and incidence =7.125 deg. using the exact theory (oblique shock
wave/expansion fan)

4.2 Use Newtons theory to calculate the drag of the alternate design at 90 deg. angle of incidence

Problem 5 30 points
Consider the same airfoil control surface of Fig. 1 in hyperpersonic flow at M = 10 and use Newtons
theory to calculate the drag at 90 deg. incidence for the original design of Fig. 3. Consider again that
