Challenges to automation
Worldwide, there are well over a
million industrial robots in opera-
tion, with over 100,000 new robots
installed every year, represent-
ing some $19 billion annually, if
software, peripherals and systems
engineering are included.
The automotive industry once led
the drive to robotize. However, to-
day, food and beverage producers;
the electrical/electronics industry;
chemical, rubber and plastics; and
the metal products and machinery
industries are continuing to robotize
operations.
What drives this growth? Prices for
robots have plummeted, and quality
has increased. Robots now cost half
of what they did in 1990. Mean-
while, automation systems and proc-
ess control have radically changed.
Todays machines are electrically-
driven, and control systems have
much improved through Programma-
ble Logic Controllers (PLCs), Dis-
tributed Control Systems (for heavy
process, large-scale applications),
and new PC-based Control Systems.
What robotic and machine tool
manufacturers expect of a cable
supplier:
High performance for effcient in-
tegration and distributed control.
Quality, reliability and durability
to avoid costly stoppages.
Availability and fast delivery for
production line exibility.
Resistance to harsh environments
and imperviousness to EMI.
Safety for personnel, e.g. lead-
and cadmium-free, and easy
recycling.
Conformity to international
standards, and cross-industry
compatibility.
Excellent service, from testing to
support and maintenance
Assembly lines require a complete
range of high performance robotic
cables for production effciency and
process control.

reliable and exible cables
One weak link can interrupt the
production chain and delay the
delivery of a product resulting in
nancial loss. To prevent this, Nex-
ans manufactures a full range of
MOTIONLINE reliable, dynamic
cables to assure the interconnection,
control and process efciency of
robots and owlines.
Nexans offers a wide scope of
cable products for automation under
its MOTIONLINE brand that con-
form to all major international safety
standards, such as German (VDE),
Canadian (CSA), American (ANSI)
Chinese (CCC) and UL worldwide.
We also frequently design and en-
gineer a special cable to deliver the
vital com bination of high-perform-
ance, reliability and long life. This
is especially true for custom-made
miniaturized installations.
We supply everything from miniatur-
ized control cables to state-of-the-art
industrial Pronet cables to bring
the ofce and the production oor
closer together. Efciency begins
with an up-front requirement analy-
sis. Then, our Nexans research cent-
ers test the cables currently used,
and strive to surpass them in terms
of performance, durability, chemical
and oil-resistance.
This move from benchmarking to
theory and then back to practical
implementation results in customized
designs, modularity and appropri-
ate materials that can t neatly into
the entire production process. Thus,
together with the worlds leading
robot and industrial equipment
manufac turers, we are creating
standards to streamline automation
worldwide.
A full range of products for
power and control functions.
Interconnectivity to merge both
the analog and digital worlds.
Optimized conductor and
insulation materials (no shrinkage
and low hydrolysis).
Special designs to maintain
electrical parameters throughout
the life cycle.
Easy strippability and connectivity
for installation and replacement
ease.
Fire- and heat-resistance for
safety and performance.
Imperviousness to oils, fats and
other chemical agents.
Technical support tailored to
customer needs.

Bus & Data Cables
ince the beginning of the 80s
eldbus systems are well known
through the EDP (electronic data
processing). Furthermore the networ-
king of systems gains an increase
of interest, especially the decentral
distributed intelligence in the Indu-
stry- Building- Environment or Trafc-
Automation. Here bus systems are
used as an communication medium
for sectored actors, sensors and
steering in the automation technic
and all overthere where electronic
modules has to be connected wit-
hout a big effort of cabling.
Only one cable connects all compo-
nents.
Why Bus Systems?
The summarized advantages of
Bus Systems are as follows:
Less wiring/cabling
Small space in switchboards
More transparency
Faster diagnose
Better availability
Higher safety
All these pros leads to relevant cost
advantages.
The different requirements to the bus
system, the variety of technical solu-
tions but also corporate policy leads
to a variety of bus systems without a
single standard.
Fieldbus
Fieldbus is the generic name for all
bus systems which are used for the
metrology, steering and controlling
engineering.
These are:
CAN
DeviceNet
Profbus
Profnet
Interbus
CC-Link
ASI Bus
According to the DIN (German
institute for standardisation) stan-
dard a eld bus in general should
transmit a small volume of data in
fast time series on a digital compa-
re between sensors/actuators and
steering. As the requirements to the
bus system depends on the level of
automation, there is no eld bus
which can solve all tasks optimal
together.
Following table should show a short
overview of the most important
features of the three rst called bus
systems:
Highest BPS Dimension Max. number of participants Standardisation
Pronet/Industrial Ethernet 100 Mbit/s 100 m unlimited IEC 11801

Industrial Ethernet
is the name given to the use of the
Ethernet network protocol in an
industrial environment, for automa-
tion and process control. A number
of techniques are used to adapt
the Ethernet protocol for the needs
of industrial processes (e.g. PROFI-
NET), which must provide real time
behaviour. By using non-proprietary
protocols, automation systems from
different manufacturers can be
interconnected throughout a pro-
cess plant. Industrial Ethernet takes
advantage of the relatively larger
marketplace for computer intercon-
nections to reduce cost and improve
performance of communications
between industrial controllers.
PROFIBUS DP
(Decentralized Peripherals) is used
to operate sensors and actuators via
a centralized controller in produc-
tion (factory) automation applicati-
ons. The many standard diagnostic
options, in particular, are focused
on here.
Description of eld bus systems
PROFIBUS PA
(Process Automation) is used to
monitor measuring equipment via
a process control system in process
automation applications.
Controller-area network
(CAN or CAN-bus) is a vehicle
bus standard designed to allow
microcontrollers and devices to
communicate with each other within
a vehicle without a host computer.
CAN is a message based protocol,
designed specically for automotive
applications but now also used in
other areas such as industrial auto-
mation and medical equipment.
DeviceNet
is a communication protocol used
in the automation industry to inter-
connect control devices for data
exchange. It uses Controller Area
Network as the backbone technolo-
gy and denes an application layer
to cover a range of device proles.
Typical applications include infor-
mation exchange, safety devices,
and large I/O control networks.
INTERBUS
is a serial bus system, which trans-
mits data between control systems
(e.g., PCs, PLCs, VMEbus com-
puters, robot controllers etc.) and
spatially distributed I/O modules
that are connected to sensors and
actuators (e.g., temperature sensors,
position switches).
AS-Interface
(Actuator Sensor Interface, AS-i) is
an industrial networking solution
(physical layer, data access method
and protocol) used in PLC, DCS and
PC-based automation systems. It is
designed for connecting simple eld
I/O devices (e.g. binary ON/OFF
devices such as actuators, sensors,
rotary encoders, analog inputs and
outputs, push buttons, and valve
position sensors) in discrete manuf-
acturing and process applications
using a single 2-conductor cable.

74
Bus cables ensure a reliable data
transmission within an industrial
environment. Various types of
bus cables are available in order
to connect machine parts with
the PLC at the eld level or to
connect PLC to the management
level of a factory. The bus cables
are designed for 2- or 3-dimen-
sional exible applications.

Installation of the cables in the
daisy chain

The removal of the cables must be
without twists, i.e. the cables must
be unreeled. They must never be
pulled in loops over the ange of
the drum. A balanced lling of the
webs guarantees that the position
of the cables remains unchanged
during operation.
Do not install cables of different
sheath materials without using a
separation web.
The cables should be installed as
symmetrically as possible depen-
ding on their weights and measure-
ments. This is also true for the outer
diameters. Cables which highly
differ in outer diameter should be
separated by webs.
The cables must not be installed in a
xed construction in the chain, but
they must be mobile. In particular in
the area of the bending radii the
cables must move freely. The indica-
ted minimum bending radii must be
considered the absolute minimum
value.
Instructions for Installation*
Fastening of the cable in the
daisy chain

Both ends of the cable must be xed
in a dead zone in an appropriate
distance to the ends of the mobile
parts (approx. 30 x diameter). At
least in the area of the mobile parts
of the daisy chain the cables must
be provided with a traction relief.
Cable installation in engines
The cables must not touch the sur-
face of the engine.
Minimum admissible bending radii

12 x outer diameter of the cable.
Smaller bending radii are possible
at a reduced life.

Utilization in the daisy chain Regular version (1 sheath construction with/without screen braid)
- minimum admissible bending radius: 12 x D
- maximum admissible acceleration: 5 m/sec.2*
- maximum admissible displacement: 100 m/min (180 m/min)**
- guaranteed bendings (ati 12xD): min. 10 Mio *
D...... Conductor cross section (mm)
* for cables > 16 mm

2
, million bendings)
** for cables 6 mm
2
conductor cross section
+ The instructions for installation of the manufacturers of energy
conducting chains must be observed in addition.
- maximum admissible horizontal displacement: 5 m
- alternating bendings not admissible
- Torsion is not admissible for cables with overall screen
(torsion for a maximum 30/m are admissible)
For deviating (higher) requirements, like
- smaller bending radii
- larger horizontal / vertical displacements
- higher velocities / acceleration
- alternating bendings
- torsion et cetera
there are special constructions upon demand.
