JURISDICTION AND VENUE
5. This is a civil action for patent infringement arising under the patent laws of the
United States, Title 35, United States Code. This Court has jurisdiction under 35 U.S.C. 271,
et seq., and 28 U.S.C. 1331 and 1338.
6. This Court has personal jurisdiction over Defendants.
7. D&M Holdings U.S. Inc. is incorporated in Delaware and is therefore subject to
the jurisdiction of this Court. As a domestic corporation, D&M Holdings U.S. Inc. is registered
to do business with the State of Delaware Division of Corporations.
8. Denon Electronics (USA), LLC is incorporated in Delaware and is therefore

LLC is registered to do business with the State of Delaware Division of Corporations.
9. To the extent that Defendants are not subject to the jurisdiction of this Court as
residents of Delaware, Defendants are subject to the jurisdiction of the Court pursuant to 10 Del.
C. 3104. Specifically, on information and belief, Defendants cause tortious injury in Delaware,
namely from the tort of patent infringement. Defendants also conduct or solicit business and
engage in a persistent course of conduct in Delaware, and Defendants derive substantial revenue
from things used and/or sold in Delaware.
10. On information and belief, Defendants have (1) transacted business in this district
(directly and/or through intermediaries) by engaging in activities such as shipping, distributing,

3
offering for sale, selling, and/or advertising their products in the State of Delaware, and (2)
delivered their products into the stream of commerce with the expectation that they will be
purchased by consumers in Delaware. Thus, on information and belief, Defendants are doing
business in this District, and have committed acts of patent infringement in this District.
11. Venue is proper in this Court under 28 U.S.C. 1391(b) and (c) and 28 U.S.C.
1400(b).
FACTUAL BACKGROUND
12. Sonos is an innovator and industry leader in the field of wireless audio
technology. As acknowledged by the media, Sonos reinvented home audio for the digital age.
See, e.g., Ex. A (from www.nbcnews.com) (If youre not familiar with Sonos, this company
revolutionized the home audio world a decade ago. . . .); Ex. B (from
www.consumerreports.org) (Sonos not only helped to invent the wireless speaker category, the
company also set the bar for performance, ease of use, and flexibility.); Ex. C (from
www.mensjournal.com) (Sonos almost singlehandedly established the stand-alone wireless
home speaker system category . . . .).
13. Sonos has been making, distributing, and selling a line of wireless home audio
products for nearly 10 years. Sonoss current line of products includes the PLAY:5 speaker,
the PLAY:3 speaker, the PLAY:1 speaker, the CONNECT pre-amplifier, and the
CONNECT:AMP amplifier, all of which are controlled by the Sonos app (for iOS, Android,
PC, or Mac). See, e.g., Ex. D (from www.sonos.com). Sonos also offers a PLAYBAR
speaker and a SUB speaker for wireless home theater. Id.
14. Sonos is the owner of nearly 40 U.S. Patents related to modern audio technology,
as well as nearly 250 pending U.S. patent applications. Sonos provides a link to its U.S. Patents

and published U.S. Patent Applications, as well as a table that correlates Sonoss patents to its
products, on Sonoss website at www.sonos.com/legal/terms#patents. See Ex. E. In addition,
Sonos encloses notices of its patents with its product inserts and manuals for its products, which
provide that [o]ur patent-to-product information can be found here: sonos.com/legal/patents.
See, e.g., Ex. F.
15. On information and belief, Defendants had actual and/or constructive knowledge
of Sonoss patents prior to the filing of this action. For instance, at a minimum, Defendants have
been aware (or should have been aware) of Sonoss patents in view of Sonoss position in the
industry (including its direct competition with Defendants), Sonoss prominent display of its
patents on Sonoss website, and Sonoss inclusion of a notice of its patents in Sonoss product
inserts and manuals.
16. In June 2014, Defendants launched their own wireless audio system, which is
called HEOS by Denon (or the HEOS system). This HEOS system is made up of a line of
HEOS wireless audio products, including the HEOS 7 speaker, the HEOS 5 speaker, the
HEOS 3 speaker, the HEOS LINK pre-amplifier, and the HEOS AMP amplifier, all of
which are controlled by the HEOS app (for iOS or Android). See, e.g., Exs. G-H (from
usa.denon.com and http://heosbydenon.denon.com).
17. Defendants are trying to market the HEOS system as a direct competitor to
Sonoss wireless audio system. See, e.g., Ex. G (Denon is [o]ne of the most well-equipped
contenders to take on Sonos at the game it knows so well.). However, on information and
belief, instead of innovating, Defendants are merely copying Sonoss system. As Digital Trends
noted:
For those unfamiliar, about 10 years ago Sonos created a line of extremely
succinct wireless speakers that operate in tandem, allowing users to stream music
Case 1:14-cv-01330-UNA Document 1 Filed 10/21/14 Page 4 of 20 PageID #: 4
5
over Wi-Fi from a single source to multiple rooms without latency, or send a
different source to each speaker, all from an extremely intuitive and powerful app
on a computer or mobile device. Since then, the genre has exploded, spawning
copycats from the likes of Samsung, Bose, and others. With HEOS, Denon
appears to be making little effort to hide its mimicry of the popular system. Like
Sonos, Denons gorgeous new speakers come in three sizes and price points, and
offer minimalist designs.
Ex. I (from www.digitaltrends.com).
18. On information and belief, Defendants have even copied various aspects of
Sonoss marketing and branding for its wireless audio system. For example, Defendants use of
the HEOS name for its wireless audio system is similar enough to Sonos that it led one
industry publication to remark that we cant help but feel the similarity was deliberate. See
Ex. J (from www.avhub.com.au).
19. As another example, Defendants naming convention for their line of HEOS
speakers closely resembles Sonoss naming convention for its line of wireless speakers (e.g.,
Denons HEOS 3, HEOS 5, HEOS 7 vs. Sonoss PLAY:1, PLAY:3, PLAY:5). Compare Ex. D
with Ex. G.
20. Defendants website for the HEOS products also has a layout that is similar to
Sonoss website, as shown below.

SONOS

DENON

21. Further, Defendants marketing materials for the HEOS system use graphics that
closely resemble graphics used in Sonoss marketing materials, as shown below.

7
SONOS
www.sonos.com/system
DENON
usa.denon.com/us/heos-multi-room-sound
22. Further yet, Defendants are using taglines in connection with the HEOS system
that closely resemble taglines used by Sonos. For instance, Defendants tagline of Fill every
room with music (see Ex. G) closely resembles Sonoss tagline of Fill your home with music.
23. On information and belief, Defendants have also incorporated Sonoss patented
innovations into the HEOS system, as explained below.
COUNT I:
INFRINGEMENT OF U.S. PATENT NO. 8,788,080
24. Sonos incorporates paragraphs 1-23 above as if fully set forth herein.
25. Sonos is the owner U.S. Patent No. 8,788,080 (the 080 patent), entitled
Multi-Channel Pairing in a Media System, which was duly and legally issued by the United
Case 1:14-cv-01330-UNA Document 1 Filed 10/21/14 Page 7 of 20 PageID #: 7
8
States Patent and Trademark Office (the USPTO) on July 22, 2014. A copy of the 080 Patent
is attached hereto as Exhibit K.
26. Sonos is in compliance with any applicable marking and notice provisions of 35
U.S.C. 287 with respect to the 080 Patent.
27. The 080 patent is directed to devices and methods for providing audio in a
multi-channel listening environment.
28. Defendants HEOS system is covered (either literally or under the Doctrine of
Equivalents) by one or more of the claims of the 080 patent. For example, at a minimum,
Defendants HEOS 3 speaker productwhich is configured to operate either in a no pairing
mode or in a stereo pairing modeembodies one or more of the devices, methods, and/or
computer-readable media claimed in the 080 patent. See, e.g., Ex. L (from usa.denon.com); Ex.
M (from denon.custhelp.com).
29. Thus, Defendants and/or users of the HEOS system have directly infringed and
continue to directly infringe one or more of the claims of the 080 patent, in violation of 35
U.S.C. 271(a), by making, using, offering for sale, and/or selling the HEOS system within the
United States and/or importing the HEOS system into the United States.
30. Additionally and/or alternatively, Defendants have indirectly infringed and
continue to indirectly infringe one or more of the claims of the 080 patent, in violation of 35
U.S.C. 271(b), by actively inducing users of the HEOS system to directly infringe the one or
more claims of the 080 patent. In particular, on information and belief, (a) Defendants have
actual or constructive knowledge of the 080 Patent, (b) Defendants intentionally cause, urge, or
encourage users of the HEOS system to directly infringe one or more claims of the 080 patent
by promoting, advertising, and instructing customers and potential customers about the HEOS

9
system and uses of the system, including infringing uses (see Exs. L-M, touting the configuration
and use of two HEOS 3 speakers as a stereo pair), (c) Defendants know (or should know) that
their actions will induce users of the HEOS system to directly infringe one or more claims the
080 patent, and (d) users of the HEOS system directly infringe one or more claims of the 080
patent. For instance, at a minimum, Defendants have supplied and continue to supply HEOS
products (e.g., HEOS 3 speakers) to customers while knowing that use of these products will
infringe one or more claims of the 080 patent, and that Defendants customers then directly
infringe one or more claims of the 080 patent by using these HEOS products in accordance with
Defendants product literature.
31. Additionally and/or alternatively, Defendants have indirectly infringed and
continue to indirectly infringe one or more of the claims of the 080 patent, in violation of 35
U.S.C. 271(c), by offering to sell or selling within the United States, and/or importing into the
United States, components in connection with the HEOS system that contribute to the direct
infringement of the 080 patent by users of the HEOS system. In particular, on information and
belief, (a) Defendants have actual or constructive knowledge of the 080 Patent, (b) Defendants
offer for sale, sell, and/or import HEOS products that comprise one or more material components
of the invention of the 080 patent and are not staple articles of commerce suitable for substantial
noninfringing use, (c) Defendants know (or should know) that such component(s) are especially
made or especially adapted for use in an infringement of the 080 patent, and (d) users of the
HEOS products that comprise such material component(s) directly infringe one or more claims
of the 080 patent. For instance, at a minimum, Defendants offer for sale, sell, and/or import
HEOS products (e.g., the HEOS 3 speakers) that comprise software and/or hardware components
adapted for use in one or more devices, methods, and/or computer-readable media claimed in the
Case 1:14-cv-01330-UNA Document 1 Filed 10/21/14 Page 9 of 20 PageID #: 9
10
080 patent, and Defendants customers then directly infringe one or more claims of the 080
patent by using the HEOS products that comprise these components.
32. Defendants infringement of the 080 patent is also willful because, on
information and belief, Defendants (a) had knowledge of the 080 patent (see 14-15 above),
(b) engaged in the aforementioned activity despite an objectively high likelihood that
Defendants actions constituted infringement of the 080 patent, and (c) this objectively-defined
risk was either known or so obvious that it should have been known to Defendants.
33. Defendants infringement of the 080 patent has caused irreparable harm to Sonos
and will continue to do so unless enjoined by this Court.
COUNT II:
INFRINGEMENT OF U.S. PATENT NO. 7,571,014
34. Sonos incorporates paragraphs 1-33 above as if fully set forth herein.
35. Sonos is the owner U.S. Patent No. 7,571,014 (the 014 patent), entitled
Method and Apparatus for Controlling Multimedia Players in a Multi-Zone system, which was
duly and legally issued by the USPTO on August 4, 2009. A copy of the 014 Patent is attached
hereto as Exhibit N.
36. Sonos is in compliance with any applicable marking and notice provisions of 35
U.S.C. 287 with respect to the 014 Patent.
37. The 014 patent is directed to methods and devices for controlling a plurality of
players.
38. Defendants HEOS system is covered (either literally or under the Doctrine of
Equivalents) by one or more of the claims of the 014 patent. For instance, at a minimum,
Defendants HEOS controller appwhich is configured to group HEOS speakers, synchronize

one or more of the methods and/or devices claimed in the 014 patent. See, e.g., Exs. O-P (from
usa.denon.com). An example of this Master volume adjustment in the HEOS system is shown
below:
39. Thus, Defendants and/or users of the HEOS system have directly infringed and
continue to directly infringe one or more of the claims of the 014 patent, in violation of 35
U.S.C. 271(a), by making, using, offering for sale, and/or selling the HEOS system within the
United States and/or importing the HEOS system into the United States.
40. Additionally and/or alternatively, Defendants have indirectly infringed and
continue to indirectly infringe one or more of the claims of the 014 patent, in violation of 35
U.S.C. 271(b), by actively inducing users of the HEOS system to directly infringe the one or
more claims of the 014 patent. In particular, on information and belief, (a) Defendants have
actual or constructive knowledge of the 014 Patent, (b) Defendants intentionally cause, urge, or
encourage users of the HEOS system to directly infringe one or more claims of the 014 patent

by promoting, advertising, and instructing customers and potential customers about the HEOS
system and uses of the system, including infringing uses (see Exs. O-P), (c) Defendants know (or
should know) that their actions will induce users of the HEOS system to directly infringe one or
more claims the 014 patent, and (d) users of the HEOS system directly infringe one or more
claims of the 014 patent. For instance, at a minimum, Defendants have supplied and continue to
supply the HEOS controller app to customers while knowing that installation and use of the
HEOS controller app will infringe one or more claims of the 014 patent, and that Defendants
customers then directly infringe one or more claims of the 014 patent by installing and using the
HEOS controller app in accordance with Defendants product literature.
41. Additionally and/or alternatively, Defendants have indirectly infringed and
continue to indirectly infringe one or more of the claims of the 014 patent, in violation of 35
U.S.C. 271(c), by offering to sell or selling within the United States, and/or importing into the
United States, components in connection with the HEOS system that contribute to the direct
infringement of the 014 patent by users of the HEOS system. In particular, on information and
belief, (a) Defendants have actual or constructive knowledge of the 014 patent, (b) Defendants
offer for sale, sell, and/or import, in connection with the HEOS system, one or more material
components of the invention of the 014 patent that are not staple articles of commerce suitable
for substantial noninfringing use, (c) Defendants know (or should know) that such component(s)
are especially made or especially adapted for use in an infringement of the 014 patent, and (d)
users of the HEOS products that comprise such material component(s) directly infringe one or
more claims of the 014 patent. For instance, at a minimum, Defendants offer for sale, sell,
and/or import HEOS products (e.g., the HEOS controller app) that comprise software
components adapted for use in one or more of the methods and/or devices claimed in the 014

patent, and Defendants customers then directly infringe one or more claims of the 014 patent
by using the HEOS products that comprise these components.
42. Defendants infringement of the 014 patent is also willful because, on
information and belief, Defendants (a) had knowledge of the 014 patent (see 14-15 above),
(b) engaged in the aforementioned activity despite an objectively high likelihood that
Defendants actions constituted infringement of the 014 patent, and (c) this objectively-defined
risk was either known or so obvious that it should have been known to Defendants.
43. Defendants infringement of the 014 patent has caused irreparable harm to Sonos
and will continue to do so unless enjoined by this Court.
COUNT III:
INFRINGEMENT OF U.S. PATENT NO. 8,588,949
44. Sonos incorporates paragraphs 1-43 above as if fully set forth herein.
45. Sonos is the owner U.S. Patent No. 8,588,949 (the 949 patent), entitled
Method and Apparatus for Adjusting Volume Levels in a Multi-Zone System, which was duly
and legally issued by the USPTO on November 19, 2013. A copy of the 949 Patent is attached
hereto as Exhibit Q.
46. Sonos is in compliance with any applicable marking and notice provisions of 35
U.S.C. 287 with respect to the 949 Patent.
47. The 949 patent is directed to devices and methods for controlling a plurality of
players in a local area network.
48. Defendants HEOS system is covered (either literally or under the Doctrine of
Equivalents) by one or more of the claims of the 949 patent. For instance, at a minimum,
Defendants HEOS controller appwhich is configured to group HEOS speakers and adjust

both individual volumes and a Master volume for grouped HEOS speakersembodies one or
more of the devices, methods, and/or computer-readable media claimed in the 949 patent. See,
e.g., Exs. O-P. An example of this individual and Master volume adjustment in the HEOS
system is shown below:
49. Thus, Defendants and/or users of the HEOS system have directly infringed and
continue to directly infringe one or more of the claims of the 949 patent, in violation of 35
U.S.C. 271(a), by making, using, offering for sale, and/or selling the HEOS system within the
United States and/or importing the HEOS system into the United States.
50. Additionally and/or alternatively, Defendants have indirectly infringed and
continue to indirectly infringe one or more of the claims of the 949 patent, in violation of 35
U.S.C. 271(b), by actively inducing users of the HEOS system to directly infringe the one or
more claims of the 949 patent. In particular, on information and belief, (a) Defendants have
actual or constructive knowledge of the 949 Patent, (b) Defendants intentionally cause, urge, or
encourage users of the HEOS system to directly infringe one or more claims of the 949 patent

by promoting, advertising, and instructing customers and potential customers about the HEOS
system and uses of the system, including infringing uses, (see Exs. O-P) and (c) Defendants
know (or should know) that their actions will induce users of the HEOS system to directly
infringe one or more claims the 949 patent, and (d) users of the HEOS system directly infringe
one or more claims of the 949 patent. For instance, at a minimum, Defendants have supplied
and continue to supply the HEOS controller app to customers while knowing that installation and
use of the HEOS controller app will infringe one or more claims of the 949 patent, and that
Defendants customers then directly infringe one or more claims of the 949 patent by installing
and using the HEOS controller app in accordance with Defendants product literature.
51. Additionally and/or alternatively, Defendants have indirectly infringed and
continue to indirectly infringe one or more of the claims of the 949 patent, in violation of 35
U.S.C. 271(c), by offering to sell or selling within the United States, and/or importing into the
United States, components in connection with the HEOS system that contribute to the direct
infringement of the 949 patent by users of the HEOS system. In particular, on information and
belief, (a) Defendants have actual or constructive knowledge of the 949 patent, (b) Defendants
offer for sale, sell, and/or import, in connection with the HEOS system, one or more material
components of the invention of the 949 patent that are not staple articles of commerce suitable
for substantial noninfringing use, (c) Defendants know (or should know) that such component(s)
were especially made or especially adapted for use in an infringement of the 949 patent, and (d)
users of the HEOS products that comprise such material component(s) directly infringe one or
more claims of the 949 patent. For instance, at a minimum, Defendants offer for sale, sell,

patent, and Defendants customers then directly infringe one or more claims of the 949 patent
by using the HEOS products that comprise these components.
52. Defendants infringement of the 949 patent is also willful because, on
information and belief, Defendants (a) had knowledge of the 949 patent (see 14-15 above),
(b) engaged in the aforementioned activity despite an objectively high likelihood that
Defendants actions constituted infringement of the 949 patent, and (c) this objectively-defined
risk was either known or so obvious that it should have been known to Defendants.
53. Defendants infringement of the 949 patent has caused irreparable harm to Sonos
and will continue to do so unless enjoined by this Court.
COUNT IV:
INFRINGEMENT OF U.S. PATENT NO. D559,197
54. Sonos incorporates paragraphs 1-53 above as if fully set forth herein.
55. Sonos is the owner U.S. Patent No. D559,197 (the 197 design patent), entitled
Control Strip for Electronic Appliances, which was duly and legally issued by the USPTO on
January 8, 2008. A copy of the 197 design patent is attached hereto as Exhibit R.
56. Sonos is in compliance with any applicable marking and notice provisions of 35
U.S.C. 287 with respect to the 197 design patent.
57. The 197 design patent is directed to an ornamental design for a control strip for
electronic appliances.
Case 1:14-cv-01330-UNA Document 1 Filed 10/21/14 Page 16 of 20 PageID #: 16
17
58. Defendants HEOS system is covered (either literally or under the Doctrine of
Equivalents) by the 197 design patent. For instance, at a minimum, Defendants HEOS
speakers, HEOS amplifiers, and HEOS pre-amplifiers all include a control strip as shown and
described in the 197 design patent. As one representative example, the picture below illustrates
the control strip on the HEOS 3 Speaker product (from usa.denon.com):

59. Thus, Defendants have directly infringed and continue to directly infringe the
197 design patent, in violation of 35 U.S.C. 271(a), by making, using, offering for sale, and/or
selling HEOS speakers, HEOS amplifiers, and HEOS pre-amplifiers within the United States
and/or importing HEOS speakers, HEOS amplifiers, and HEOS pre-amplifiers into the United
States.
60. On information and belief, Defendants have actual or constructive knowledge of
the 197 design patent. Nonetheless, on information and belief, Defendants have supplied and
continue to supply HEOS speakers, HEOS amplifiers, and HEOS pre-amplifiers to customers
while knowing that use of these products will infringe the 197 design patent.
61. Defendants infringement of the 197 design patent is also willful because, on
information and belief, Defendants (a) had knowledge of the 197 design patent (see 15 above),
(b) engaged in the aforementioned activity despite an objectively high likelihood that
Defendants actions constituted infringement of the 197 design patent, and (c) this
objectively-defined risk was either known or so obvious that it should have been known to
Defendants.

Pursuant to FED. R. CIV. P. 38, Sonos demands a trial by jury of any issue triable of right
by a jury.
PRAYER FOR RELIEF
THEREFORE, Sonos prays for relief against Defendants as follows:
A. A judgment that Defendants have infringed and continue to infringe one or more
claims of the asserted patents in violation of 35 U.S.C. 271(a), (b), and (c), and that such
infringement is willful;
B. A preliminary and permanent injunction enjoining Defendants, their officers,
agents, servants, employees and attorneys, and other persons in active concert or participation
with Defendants, and their parents, subsidiaries, divisions, successors and assigns, from further
infringement of the asserted patents;
C. A judgment awarding Sonos all damages adequate to compensate for Defendants
infringement of Sonoss asserted patents, and in no event less than a reasonable royalty for
Defendants acts of infringement, including all pre-judgment and post-judgment interest at the

Tiny $199 Sonos Play:1 speaker fills a room with wireless
tunes
The Sonos Play:1 is meant to t in where larger sound systems can't, like in the bathroom or kitchen.
Sonos' new $199 Play:1 speaker may look like other wireless audio products out there,
but don't mistake it for the rest of the herd. It's not a Bluetooth speaker, nor does it
merely stream music from your phone over Wi-Fi. It's a portal to a whole Internet of
audio, one that you manipulate with your favorite phone or tablet. And, for being
smaller than a half-gallon milk carton, it sounds pretty awesome.

Not that we didn't see this coming: Sonos first introduced a Play:5 at $399, then a Play:3
at $299, so a Play:1 at $199 was inevitable. (There's also a $699 PlayBar designed to sit
under your TV.) That $199 price tag seems to be a magic number, too: The Play:1 is the
cheapest way to get started on a Sonos system, not to mention adding additional rooms
to a system that you may already have.
The Play:1 is a single speaker, meaning that the music comes out in mono. However,
Sonos' system lets you add a second speaker in the same room, and pair them for stereo
sound. And while, like all Sonos gear, you control it mainly through a phone or tablet,
this has a new play/pause button, that gives you basic control in places like a kitchen or
bathroom, where you may not want to be fumbling with an iPhone.
If you're not familiar with Sonos, this company revolutionized the home audio world a
decade ago when it launched the first (rather expensive) Sonos kits: wireless nodes that
you set up around the house that could play music tracks from a home computer or
Internet radio. If you wanted the same song in every room, no problem, the tracks would
be perfectly in sync, but you could also play different tracks in different rooms, too.
At the time, this was mind blowing. Never before could you get music in every room
without drilling a bunch of holes for wires, and never before was setting up a wireless
network so simple. But besides being expensive, the original Sonos set-up was
cumbersome, requiring you to hook up speakers, and rely on a remote control of the
company's own devising.
The explosion of smartphones and tablets, the advent of all-you-can-eat subscription
streaming music services like Spotify and MOG, and improvements in audio and
networking technology, have all benefitted Sonos as it has evolved. Now you can get a
very sweet set-up for under a grand, and control it with an iPhone, iPad or Android
device.

The Sonos speaker lineup includes the large Play:5, the medium Play:3 and the brand new little Play:1, along
with the PlayBar soundbar.
For a limited time through the holidays, Sonos will selling the Play:1 with a free network
bridge. Ordinarily, when you set-up Sonos, you need the first device to be connected by
wire to your home network. (This is a good thing, because it enables Sonos to talk to
your devices and the Internet, but also set up a completely separate wireless mesh
network for the music.) By including the normally $49 bridge, buyers can put their sole
Play:1 anywhere in the house.
For the first time in Sonos' history, competition is mounting. Bose and Samsung
announced similar systems just this week, in fact. But CEO John MacFarlane doesn't
seem phased. In fact, when we met in New York last week, he seemed ready to face the
competition, citing a decade of experience and strong retail partnerships. Sonos has a
price advantage, too both the Samsung and the Bose start at $399.

Wireless speaker shootout: Sonos Play:1 vs. the Bose SoundTouch 20 and
Samsung Shape M7
Can these challengers unseat the reigning Wi-Fi speaker champ?
Published: March 12, 2014 02:00 PM
Sonos Play:1, $200
For the last decade, audio has often taken a back seat to video. It was overshadowed by TVs with ever-bigger screens, the explosion in
streaming movie and TV services, and the emergence of mobile devices, such as smart phones and tablets, that let you watch your
content on the go.
But thanks to these mobile devices, there's a booming demand for wireless speakers that let you easily play audio contenteverything
from music to cell-phone conversationsin almost any room in the house. Bluetooth systems are popular, but they tend to limit you to
speakers that are in only one room. Wi-Fi speaker systems, on the other hand, let you stream music to several rooms in the house, and
many can work together to work in a multichannel setup.
We recently decided to test the new Play:1 speaker from Sonosthe company that essentially invented the categoryagainst new Wi-
Fi speakers from Bose (the SoundTouch 20) and Samsung (Shape M7) to see if they were credible challengers to the Wi-Fi speaker
throne. Here's what we found.
Sonos Play:1, $200
Sonos not only helped to invent the wireless speaker category, the company also set the bar for performance, ease of use, and
flexibility. But its speakers tended to be pricey, especially for a multi-room system, or a multichannel system with a subwoofer. With the
new Sonos Play:1 speaker, priced at $200, though, Sonos now has a model for the masses. The question is whether it's still able to
deliver the sonic goods at that lower price.
The Play:1 speaker is a small, stylish, and solidly constructed mono Wi-Fi speaker, offered in either black or white cabinets with a
silver-colored, nonremovable metallic mesh grille. Like the larger Play:3, $300, the Play:1 delivers very good sound, with bass that while
not extremely deep is well-balanced and more extended than expected given its small size. Like other Sonos models we've tested, it's
also very easy to use.
Also like other Sonos speakers, the Play:1 sounds great on its ownbut when you pair it with another Play:1 speaker in a stereo
configuration, you get a richer, more detailed sound with a wider soundstage. You can also add a Sonos-powered subwoofer ($700)
and the Sonos Playbar ($700) speakers to create a full 5.1-channel multichannel system, or use it with other Sonos speakers to form a
wireless multi-room sound system.

Page 2 of 4 http://www.consumerreports.org/content/cro/en/electronics-compute014/March/wireless-speaker-shootout-sonos-bose-samsung.print.html
One of the benefits of a Sonos system is that it complements your existing Wi-Fi network with its own dedicated mesh network, so you
dont get interference from other devices on the network when playing music. Another is that each Sonos component acts as a
transmitter, extending the range of the network beyond the range of your router. Like other Sonos speakers, the Play:1 has an Ethernet
jack, since at least one component in any Sonos system requires either a wired broadband connection or the use of a Sonos bridge
wired to your router.
The Play:1 has direct access to several online music services, including Pandora, Rdio, and Spotify. Sonos speakers no longer come
with a remote control; instead there are free Sonos Controller apps for Android and iOS portable devices, or PC and Mac computers.
The Play:1 lacks a wired analog (3.5mm) input, a feature found in the other players. Sonos can play iTunes music, but not copyright-
protected files purchased before April 2009.
The verdict: The top dog in our shootout. Despite being less expensive than its siblings, the Play:1 is another Sonos winner, with
satisfying performance and a good number of streaming-music choices. It's a great way for the uninitiated to get into the Sonos world
and for current users to expand their systems without spending a lot of money.
Bose SoundTouch 20, $400.
Bose SoundTouch 20, $400
Sitting smack dab in the middle of a three-model SoundTouch series of wireless speakers that clearly targets the Sonos crowd, the
SoundTouch 20 is Bose's first run at the multi-room speaker market. The speaker, which uses a proprietary but AirPlay-compatible Wi-
Fi technology, has an Bose-looking upright, rectangular design and a small OLED display housed on a plastic panel that's centered on
the front of the unit's dark-gray, cloth-covered grille. The unit's controlsPower, Aux, Volume Up/Down, and six presetsare on the top
of the enclosure, which like the side panels is white.
Unlike the Sonos Play:1, the SoundTouch comes with a small infrared remote control, with rubberized buttons for choosing presets or
controlling volume, play, and other functions. The speaker has an auxiliary minijack input for connecting portable devices, plus an
Ethernet port for a wired connection to your home network. It also has a USB port for setting up the system via your computer.
Despite its larger size and higher price, the SoundTouch 20 doesn't rise to Sonos's level when it comes to sound quality. Overall sound
was good; compared to the Play:1, though, bass wasn't as defined and could be a bit boomy, and midrange lacked detail. Still, the
speaker will probably be fine for most noncritical listeners looking for the convenience of a wireless speaker system for music and
movie/TV soundtracks. It's also easy to set up using the SoundTouch app on a computer, and easy to use.
There were a few limitations. For example, unlike the Play:1 and the new Samsung Shape M7 wireless speakers, you can't combine
two of the SoundTouch speakers to form a stereo pair, which, with proper speaker placement, can be used to create a more expansive
soundstage. Also, at the time of our testing, the Bose SoundTouch had limited access to streaming music services; it could access only
Pandora Internet radio. The company says that more services will be added in the future.
On the other hand, the SoundTouch 20 is compatible with Apple AirPlay, so you can use it with other (current or future) AirPlay
speakers in a multi-speaker setup. And you won't need an optional bridge unit to connect multiple SoundTouch- or AirPlay-compatible
speakers in a multi-room configuration, something the Sonos may and the Samsung does require. As mentioned, Bose is the only
system of the three to include a simple remote control, though you can also download a much more versatile free Bose SoundTouch
app for Android and iOS devices to use a smart phone, tablet, or computer to control the speaker.
The verdict: Perhaps in an effort to achieve simplicity, the SoundTouch 20 gives up some flexibility and some features we sometimes
find in multi-room speakers. It's also rather pricey. For those who live in Apple's world, the SoundTouch 20 is worth considering, as it

can sync to your iTunes library, but Android users would probably be better served by a different speaker system. One feature we liked
were the six presets, which let you easily call up favorite music selections without having to fire up another device.
Samsung Shape M7, $350
Samsung Shape M7, $350
This distinctive-looking, wedge-shaped Samsung Shape M7which can be positioned either horizontally or vertically (using an
included mounting stand)is basically the company's answer to Sonos, with a few interesting additions, such as Bluetooth and NFC
technology. The attractive speaker comes with a black or white enclosure with complementary-colored, diamond-shaped textured
grilles. Hidden behind a plate at the rear of the speaker are several connections, including a 3.5mm audio input, an Ethernet jack, and a
USB port that's used only for firmware updates.
The M7 can be used with its proprietary Wi-Fi-based technology and with Bluetooth for connecting to Bluetooth-enabled portable
devices or to Samsung TVs that have the SoundShare feature. It also has a 3.mm auxiliary input for wired connections to music
players. In general, we found the speaker was very easy to set up and use, especially if you have a WPS-enabled router. There are a
few buttons (including Mute and Volume) on the top of the unit, but you can get iOs and Android apps that let you control with smart
phones and tablets.
Thanks to its unusual shape and the combination of dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and DLNA (AllShare) support, the M7 is among the
most versatile speakers we've tested, though it's not without some limitations. One is that there's no option for adding a subwooferbut
while it lacks deep bass, it's hardly bass-shy.
When used as a single stereo speaker, the Shape M7 delivers good overall sound qualitya bit better than the Bose SoundTouch 20,
but not quite as clear and detailed as the Sonos Play:1. So it should be a fine choice for most noncritical listeners looking for a wireless
stereo speaker for music and movie or TV soundtrack reproduction.
But sound quality bumps up to very good when two M7s are paired to form a two-speaker stereo system, though you've now spent
$700 for the speakers and $50 for the hub. When we paired two M7 speakers, bass became more balanced and thus less prominent,
midrange lost some of its softness, and treble was a bit more extended.
The M7 speaker streams audio wirelessly from Internet services such as Amazon Cloud Player, TuneIn Radio, Pandora, and Rhapsody
more services than Bose, but not as many as Sonos. It can also stream from network-connected hard drives and computers. It can
also stream content directly off your phone or tablet via Bluetooth, which Sonos can't do. You can also use your phone, tablet, or
computer to access Internet streaming services the Shape M7 lacks, such as Spotify.
Unlike Sonos, the M7 system doesn't require at least one speaker to be wired directly to your router. But if you want to create a stereo
pair or a multi-room system, you'll need the optional hub, which connects to your router via an Ethernet cable. Like Sonos, the M7
doesn't come with a separate remote control. Instead, you use the free Samsung Multiroom app on an Android or iOS device. The app
also lets you add speakers and have them work as a stereo pair. There's also a pairing button on the speakers.
The verdict: The Samsung Shape M7 is an impressive first step into the world of Wi-Fi speakers, especially when you consider its
versatility. Like the Sonosbut not the Bose SoundTouch 20it can play high-resolution (lossless) audio files. It also features manual
or NFC Bluetooth pairing, which the Play:1 lacks. Still, the M7 comes in second place in our three-speaker shootout. But we'll continue
to monitor improvements in all these speakers systems to see if any can usurp Sonos' throne.

Sonos Play:1 A Better, Affordable Wireless Speaker
Sonos Play:1
Sonos almost singlehandedly established
the stand-alone wireless home speaker
system category, primarily because the
company believed in the future of
streaming music long before Pandora or
Spotify existed. The company also believed
it was worth building quality powered
speakers to spray that digital music around
the house. Thank goodness, because its
latest and least expensive speaker entry
the Sonos Play:1 is a blast.
The smallest member of the Sonos speaker
family, the Sonos Play:1 stands just a
couple of inches taller than an iPhone but packs a solid sonic punch. It uses two drivers
in a sealed cabinet, which means there's no port venting, so you can jam it against a wall
or between the Cuisinart and the Krups blender on your kitchen counter without
diminishing its sound. And its sound is impressive.
From Coltrane to Coldplay, the Play:1 delivers smooth yet crisp audio with plenty of rim-
shot clarity. Yet it is rarely overbearing in the high end; something competitors are often
guilty of. On the bass end, kick drums are solid without the flabby aspects that some
speakers can have in an effort to sound richer and more full-bodied. (If you want
neighbor-disturbing bottom-end vibrations, however, only a separate subwoofer will
deliver that.)
When used in tandem with a second Play:1, the speakers automatically recognize each

other and switch from mono to stereo. Internal digital signal processors even tweak the
sonic profile of the speakers to deliver a different sound stage when switching from
single to stereo speakers.
The Play:1's rounded corners aren't going to win any design innovation awards, but the
overall look is inconspicuous, fitting comfortably into any type of decor. Controls on the
top of the speaker allow you to pause a song; a double press will skip to the next track.
Of course, like nearly everything these days, you can control the Sonos speakers through
an iPhone or Android app, switching between music sources, changing the volume in
different rooms, even adjusting the equalization.
The speaker will not stream music directly from a smartphone over Bluetooth or work
with Apple's Airplay, but that may be a good thing. It means guests can't hijack your
stereo to foist their favorite Adele tracks on you, and the music won't stop playing should
you wander too far from the speaker with your phone. The Sonos system relies on its
own Internet connection using your home Wi-Fi network to play music from your own
digital collection or favorite streaming service.
Just as there are now dozens of streaming music services and sources, there are also
countless wireless speakers on the market. What helps Sonos stand out from the crowd
is its ability to work with numerous other Sonos speakers, including stereo and home
theater setups. Moreover, the Play:1's $199 price is extremely competitive, coming in at
the same level as less powerful, less feature-rich, and less acoustically accurate portable
Bluetooth speakers like the $180 Beats Pil or $300 Jawbone Big Jambox.
Of course, the Sonos Play:1 isn't completely wireless; you have to plug it in to power it
up. A Sonos Bridge connected to your router is also needed if you want to go wireless
(the $49 Bridge is included at no additional charge with the Play:1 for a limited time this
fall). So it's more comparable to the newly introduced $399 Samsung Shape M7 and
$399 Bose SoundTouch 20. But the Samsung and Bose offerings, while more expensive,
only work with a limited number of music services, while Sonos covers everything from
Slacker to Songza to Spotify. It is, as they say, definitely a player. [$199; sonos.com]

Your Home Network
To access music services, Internet radio, and any digital music stored on your computer or Network-Attached Storage (NAS)
device, your home network must meet the following requirements:
Home network requirements
High-speed DSL/Cable modem, or fiber-to-the-home broadband connection for proper playback of Internet-based
music services. (If your Internet service provider only offers Satellite Internet access, you may experience playback
issues due to fluctuating download rates.)
If your modem is not a modem/router combination and you want to take advantage of Sonos' automatic online
updates, or stream music from an Internet-based music service, you must install a router in your home network. If
you do not have a router, purchase and install one before proceeding. If you are going to use the Sonos Controller App
on an Android or iOS device, or you are setting up Sonos wirelessly, you will need a wireless router. Please visit our
Web site at http://faq.sonos.com/apps for more information.
Connect a SONOS BRIDGE, BOOST or player to your router if:
You have a larger home where the WiFi performance isnt reliable and you want to strengthen the wireless
performance of your Sonos system.
Your WiFi network is already in high demand with streaming video and web surfing and you want to create a
separate wireless network exclusively for your Sonos speakers.
You want to pair a SUB and/or a pair of PLAY:1 or PLAY:3 speakers with your PLAYBAR to create a 3.1 or 5.1 home
theater setup.
Your home network is 5GHz only (not switchable to 2.4GHz).
For best results, you should connect the computer or NAS drive that contains your personal music library collection to
your home network router using an Ethernet cable.

The Denon Difference: What Makes HEOS by Denon Amaze Your World

Sound
Lets start with the sound, Denons premier audio quality. Denon brings over eight years
of development combined with over 100 years of experience as a leader in audio
innovation to the design of HEOS by Denon. Heres why the new systems sound quality
stands alone:

Audiophile-level synchronization. The system is designed with new technology
that makes for an incredible level of synchronization, a level even audiophiles
can appreciate.

State-Of-the-Art audio DSP optimization. Denon partnered with Waves Audio, the
world's leading developer of professional audio digital signal processing (DSP)
technologies. The Denon Multi-Room-Sound will use embedded MaxxAudio by
Waves, a sophisticated sound enhancement suite customized to provide top-of-
the-line sound quality for an optimized listening experience.

Superior acoustic design. Denons audio expertise has evolved to meet the
unique needs of todays connected music consumer.

Easy to Use
Open the box and HEOS by Denon comes to life with its simple, intuitive and well-
designed whole home control via the Denon Controller app for iOS and Android. This
makes it easy and convenient to set up and operate the players through frequently used
wireless devices. Working with any existing home Wi-Fi network, the players connect
effortlessly to a home network. Truly within minutes users can begin enjoying the sound
of their favorite music filling the roomno Ethernet cable required.

The Wi-Fi connection is key to great playback and sound quality and Denons dual-band
Wi-Fi uses modern Wi-Fi networks to their fullest advantage. The system integrates dual
band 802.11n Wi-Fi to provide long range and bandwidth, giving the freedom and
flexibility to place HEOS by Denon Multi-Room-Wireless Sound products anywhere in
your home. The Denon system avoids common sources of interference from single-band
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth devices, microwave ovens, baby monitors and cordless phones.

If users need to overcome difficult Wi-Fi conditions created by poor Wi-Fi range or have
a need to create a network for the first time, Denon offers a Range Extender. The HEOS
Extend differs in that it strengthens the entire home network for all Wi-Fi devices.

Content and Playback
Once set up, sit back and enjoy your experience with access to the worlds leading
online music services. With USB, the HEOS by Denon Multi-Room-Wireless Sound
system allows users to also stream music collections stored on a hard drive and thumb

drive. Play content locally, to another Denon wireless speaker, or to all Denon wireless
speakers with playback times that dont miss a beat when it comes to responsiveness.

HEOS by Denon Multi-Room Wireless Sound System will follow up the initial product
launch introduction with pre-amp/amp expansion products. The pre-amp and amplifier
products will allow for functionality of legacy audio products. The amps drive passive
speaker systems and give you the ability to create additional zones of audio. These are
expected to be available in the months following the initial release and into 2015, and

DENON TAKES ON SONOS WITH ITS NEW HEOS
WIRELESS SPEAKER SERIES
As the market for multi-room wireless speakers continues to expand, a new competitor
aims to knock the pioneer of the genre, Sonos, from its throne. The seasoned audio
veterans at Denon today unveiled a brand new line of wireless components looking to
take on the multi-room audio champ, consisting of a three-speaker series dubbed HEOS.
For those unfamiliar, about 10 years ago Sonos created a line of extremely succinct
wireless speakers that operate in tandem, allowing users to stream music over Wi-
Fi from a single source to multiple rooms without latency, or send a different source to
each speaker, all from an extremely intuitive and powerful app on a computer or mobile
device. Since then, the genre has exploded, spawning copycats from the likes of
Samsung, Bose, and others.

Page 2 of 3 http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/denon-takes-sonos-new-heos-wireless-speaker-series/
With HEOS, Denon appears to be making little effort to hide its mimicry of the popular
system. Like Sonos, Denons gorgeous new speakers come in three sizes and price
points, and offer minimalist designs. The teardrop-shaped components speak Wi-Fi, and
offer easy access to cloud services, and hard drives, and streaming apps (though which
apps are supported is yet to be announced). And the system is controlled over an iOS or
Android app.
However, unlike previous challengers, the HEOS lineup is crafted by Denon and that
could mean that these babies offer some serious audio performance. Eight years in the
making, Denon boasts its new lineup offers audiophile-level synchronization which
suggests highly tuned clocking for playback. For its DSP setup, Denon has partnered
with the digital gurus at Waves, offering the companys proprietary MaxxAudio DSP
system. And of course, the new speakers incorporate Denons century of audio design
prowess.
In addition to the speakers, Denon offers HEOS Extend, which extends the range for
larger homes, or those with poor Wi-Fi range. The company has also announced that in
the near future, it will offer more speakers, as well as similarly controlled preamp and
amplifier expansion packs, allowing users to transform their dumb systems into smart,
multi-zone audio systems.
Users will have to ante up if they want a multi-room system with Denons considerable
sound design prowess thrown into the mix, however. While exact pricing for the current
lineup wasnt fully disclosed (nor were names for each model, for that matter), Denons
press release says the three speakers start at $300, and top out at $600. Using our
superlative deductive reasoning skills, that pegs the middle-tier speaker at around $400,
and puts the entire series $100 or more above Sonos Play:1, Play:3, and Play:5.
Will Denons new challenger offer audio performance worth shelling out the extra
dough? Well find out soon enough, as we will be pulling the series in for a full review. If

you cant wait for our final verdict, however, you can buy Denons new HEOS speakers

A new state-of-the-art wireless audio system that takes Sonos on at its own game is manufactured by one of the oldest
names in audio and uses ground-breaking Aussie technology.
At the Australian release of HEOS by Denon, the companys marketing director, Nick Murrells, said that HEOS is not an
acronym, nor an allusion to some ancient Greek goddess in fact he says it doesnt stand for anything at all. But when
you sound out the name phonically (He-Os) it sounds so similar to Sonos that we cant help but feel the similarity was
deliberate, not least because all the components in the HEOS system are so similar to existing components made by
Sonos, and both companies are marketing wireless multi-room sound systems. There are many points of difference
between HEOS and Sonos, but one very clear one at the time of the release that whereas Sonos used a proprietary
mesh wireless network developed in the USA, HEOS uses a world-standard wireless network that was developed right
here in Australia. (Sonos has since upgraded its system so it can use both its proprietary mesh network and standard Wi-
Fi networks). So it wasnt surprising to find that HEOS headquarters is in North Sydney, Australia and that its Chief
Technical Officer is none other than Peter Celinski, the South Australian electronics engineer who, with his brother Tom,
founded Avega Systems more than 10 years ago, on whose technology HEOS by Denons technology is based.
HEOS by Denon connects seamlessly to your existing Wi-Fi network and, through elegantly-designed, compact wireless
speakers, enables you to enjoy music in any room, from cloud sources, local stored sources (NAS, PC or MAC) or from
legacy sources (CD, FM radio), all controlled by your Smartphone (iOS or Android), whose music content can also be
streamed to the speakers.
Qualifi, which has distributes Denon in Australia, has released the first products in the HEOS range: wireless multi-zone
music players, the HEOS 3 ($449), HEOS 5 ($599) and HEOS 7 ($899), a wireless integrated amplifier ($799) and a
wireless pre-amplifier ($549). HEOS represents the next evolution in products from Denon, a company that for more
than 100 years is still leading in sound quality, new technologies and innovative products that not only appeal but
anticipate what consumers are looking for, said Ralph Grundl from Qualifi. These great-looking HEOS wireless
speakers can play music contained on your Smartphone. If you have more than one speaker, they can work as a multi-
room system for your entire home. Its the ideal audio set-up transferring Denons music experience to todays busy
consumers, allowing them to enjoy their favourite cloud music services to the fullest, because it brings Denon-quality
audio to anyor allrooms in their home.
The HEOS App is designed to offer comprehensive control through a simple interface, allowing system set up via a
couple of taps. It lets you group speakers together, to play the same song in party mode, as well as separate rooms to
play a different song in each of them: lets you create and save playlists as well as check what songs are next in the
queue. You can also listen to tracks directly from your ownor anyone elsesSmartphone, or from Internet radio, or
streaming services. Currently, HEOS supports Spotify, TuneIn, Pandora and Deezer, but Celinski says other services,
including iHeart, Rdio, Beatsmusic, Songza, SiriusXM are on our road map.
The two products of most interest to audiophiles are the HEOS Link and HEOS Amp. The HEOS Link adds HEOS multi-
room audio functionality to any existing audio system. Simply connect the high quality HEOS Link stereo pre-amplifier via
an analogue, digital coax or digital fibre optic cable to turn any existing home cinema or music system into a wireless
HEOS audio zone.
The HEOS Amp adds multi-room audio functionality to any pair of stereo loudspeakers. It incorporates a Class-D
amplifier with a claimed output of 100-watts per channel. Then, like the Link, it allows you to stream music from hard
drive, thumb drive, NAS or Smartphone. It also has analogue, digital coax and optical inputs.

Caution
Recommend installing a safety wire (not included) at the safety wiring hole on the back of the speaker in order to prevent injury to the user and others or

Using the Now Playing Queue
HEOS uses a Now Playing Queue to line up music that you want to listen
to. Music can be selected from any of your local or online music sources (as
long as they are not preprogrammed radio or station type streams). This
feature works similarly to how a jukebox works. You select something to play
(a song, album, playlist or even your entire music collection) and add it to the
queue. When you select something to play you will be asked how you want
to queue up your music.

Inserts the item into the queue after the currently playing track and plays
the selected item immediately.
2Play Now and Replace Queue
Clears the queue and plays the selected item immediately.
2Play Next
Inserts the item into the queue after the current song and plays it when
the current song ends.
2Add to End of Queue
Adds the item to the end of the queue.
2Repeat and Shufe Playback
You can control how the play queue plays the music that you have added
by using the Repeat and Shufe controls. The playback controls are
visible on the Now Playing screen.
1
Tap the Now Playing tab.

BASIC TROUBLESHOOTING
My speaker wont connect to my network using the audio cable
Solution Refer to Page
Make sure your mobile device is connected to your wireless network before setting up your speaker.
Alternatively, you can connect your speaker to your network router using the included Ethernet cable. Once connected via Ethernet, the
HEOS by Denon App should recognize the speaker and you can manually move it to your wireless network using Settings/My Devices/
Device_Name/Advanced/Network Settings.
13
14
I get a message Device was not found
Solution Refer to Page
Move your speaker closer to your wireless router.
Your speakers and controller device may not be on the same network. Verify that the controller device is on the same network as your
speakers. This is usually congured under the Settings feature on your device.
If you have more than one network, your device may hop to a diferent network as you move around your home.
Make sure you dont have any other electronic devices interfering with your wireless network signals. Microwave ovens, cordless
phones, and some televisions can cause wireless network interference.
If your speakers are located far away from your router, consider adding a Wireless Range Extender like the HEOS Extend.
In case your wireless router is incompatible with HEOS speaker, please use the optional HEOS Extend Wireless Range Extender and
hard-wire it to your router.

Music cuts out or delays sometimes
Solution Refer to Page
Make sure your Internet connection is operating correctly. If you are sharing your network with other users or devices, they may be using
most of your bandwidth (specially if they are streaming video).
Make sure your speakers are within range of your wireless network.
Make sure your speakers are not located near other electronic devices that could interfere with its wireless connectivity (like microwave
ovens, cordless phones, TVs, etc).

I hear a delay when using the AUX Input with my TV
Solution Refer to Page
If you are connecting the AUX input with your cable or satellite box for enjoying TV audio through multiple HEOS speakers, you may
hear a delay between when you see someone speak and when you hear the audio. This is because the HEOS system must bufer the
audio before it sends it out to the speakers so that it arrives at all speakers at the same time.
You can avoid this delay by listening only to the speaker which is directly connected to the set top box.

n sqlite 2003.5.7
SQLite Copyright
SQLite is in the
Public Domain
All of the code and documentation in SQLite has been dedicated to the public
domain by the authors. All code authors, and representatives of the companies they
work for, have signed a% davits dedicating their contributions to the public domain
and originals of those signed a% davits are stored in a resafe at the main o% ces of
Hwaci. Anyone is free to copy, modify, publish, use, compile, sell, or distribute the
original SQLite code, either in source code form or as a compiled binary, for any
purpose, commercial or non-commercial, and by any means.
The previous paragraph applies to the deliverable code and documentation in
SQLite - those parts of the SQLite library that you actually bundle and ship with
a larger application. Some scripts used as part of the build process (for example
the congure scripts generated by autoconf) might fall under other open-source
licenses. Nothing from these build scripts ever reaches the nal deliverable SQLite
library, however, and so the licenses associated with those scripts should not be a
factor in assessing your rights to copy and use the SQLite library.
All of the deliverable code in SQLite has been written from scratch. No code has
been taken from other projects or from the open internet. Every line of code can
be traced back to its original author, and all of those authors have public domain
dedications on le. So the SQLite code base is clean and is uncontaminated with
licensed code from other projects.
